Could Your Astrology Sign Affect Your Car Insurance Rates?

In recent years we learned that insurance companies were quite fond of using customer’s credit scores as rationale for raising rates on some folks. The thinking is, your credit score accurately indicates of how you handle responsibility and what kind of risks you take. Therefore, lower credit scores could point to risky and irresponsible behavior, translating into substantially higher rates. Some states have decided that this is not a valid argument and actually outlawed the practice. However the majority still permit credit scores to be used, with Michigan’s State Supreme Court overturning the 2005 law that made the practice illegal.
You have to wonder how the courts might feel about insurance rates based on astrological signs.
Ever curious about new ways understand the risks within each and every customer, Allstate Insurance has apparently investigated the driving habits of people and how they line up with a person’s astrological sign. From the data considered, Allstate noted that Scorpios were only involved in 1.5% of all automobile accidents while Virgos are on the other end of the spectrum. Drivers born between August 23rd and September 22nd are 700% more likely to get in a wreck than those born under the sign of the scorpion. If you are wondering about the entire Zodiac Safety rating, this is what we learned from the Allstate study.
Allstate said Ophiuchus, the “new” sign added in the revised calendar, was the second-safest sign for motorists, followed by Cancer, Aquarius, Libra, Aries, Capricorn, Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces, Taurus, Leo, and Virgo.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 1:09pmBoth myself and my husband are virgos and the only accidents we’ve been in were caused by others hitting us. We can’t help it people seek us out to rear-end.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 12:43pmWell if Allstate is resorting to astrological signs and probably sheep guts next, I don’t want anything to do with them. Like I am going to rely on a company for insurance that believes in that satanic stuff? Ain’t no way! That tells me they are totally unreliable.
Like their jingle goes, ‘you’re in good hans with Allstate – oops!’ as you slip between their fingers.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 10:22amSo what’s next…base my rates by the type of toilet paper I buy? Insurance companies will do anything to try and increase their revenues. The credit score application is a joke. There is absolutely no evidence what so ever that low credit scores make people drive erratically. So a person who had an excellent score suddenly loses his job….racks up medical bills or whatever and can’t pay bills so the score goes down? How can these companies justify this? This should be illegal and it totally ****** me off. Insurance companies along w/ attorneys and pilots (yes I hate pilots…they’re nothing but glorified taxi drivers w/ huge egos) can all kiss my ars.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 8:26amI knew about ALLSTATE many years ago when I went to ask about car insurance and they wanted to do a credit check on me and I told them YOUR NUTS.I did have insurance with them when I first moved to Fl for about twenty years and I never had an accident or ticket and then one time someone I let use my truck for moving some construction material came off and hit another car they paid for it and dropped me like a hot potatoe.Yes I agree why they paid for it which was called UNSECURED LOAD but why they dropped me for this one incident told me all I needed to know they didn‘t say they would raise my rates they just refuse to insure me again so that’s how YOUR IN GOOD HANDS works.I have them for my home insurance and now thinking of changing because their just NUTS.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 3:12amThe new sign is bogus even for those who follow astrology in the US. The new sign has been brought up many times. This is not the first time this new sign has come up. Western astrology uses planets, NOT the stars. This sign was created because of how the constellations have moved – which only matter if the star positions matter to you. They don’t to most modern astrologists.
My favorite UK astrologist – http://www.cainer.com
…and what he says about all of this – http://www.cainer.com/features/ophiuchus/ophiuchus.html
(Note: Because of how he uses frames on his site, I had to link to the article on its own without the frames. Go to the main URL posted above to get the navigation menu.)

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 1:31amThank goodness I’m a Scorpio if they actually legally get away with considering something as ludicrous as astrological signs in determining premiums. Of course, it’s simply nothing more than shenanigans being used to charge people a lot more for insurance, but maybe Barackus Caesar is going to throw em a bone after what he’s done to the health insurance industry in the long term.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 3:16amAs a former auto insurance solicitor (a licensed professional working directly under an agent), I wanted to note that the way this story is presented is horrible. Insurers have always asked for the driver’s date of birth. You would get a similarly lopsided picture if you simply compared all drivers born in September with all drivers born in November. (I was born a “Virgo”, so I’m glad Allstate has given me the heads-up.)
Underwriting nowadays requires data mining the statistics, and predicting who will be a safer driver is often a result of following stastical trends that have no apparent connection reality.
In case you were wondering, credit checks for car insurance do not “ding” your credit, nor do they look for a simple high-or-low calulation. There are specific indicators which correlate to safer driving, and those drivers get lower rates than the simple age/rate table warrants. (There is no way to “jack up” the rate past each state’s maximum levels, but there are ways to lower it.)
It’s not a case of insurers being greedy; it’s an example of a free market becoming more competitive using the latest in statistical modeling, no matter where it leads.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 9:23amHow about how often you visit the bathroom every day? You know if you hold it in that is not healthy for you, and that shows a lack of responsibility to your health and that cost all of us more money to take care of you because you could not do it yourself. We may want to consider texting a time stamped picture of you using the facilities with sufficient proof to verify you are in fact taking responsibility for your own health. Then maybe you can get the lowest rates on car and health insurance, the best interest rates on loans and credit, and whatever else they want to tie to you being a “good boy.” Why not? It makes perfect sense to me?
