Could Your Postal Worker Soon Be Thwarting Terrorist Attacks?

Despite the U.S. Post Office suffering a reported $8.5 billion loss, Frederic Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), the union of letter carriers, thinks the government agency should actually be expanding its role and responsibilities rather than cutting back. According to Rolando, postal workers could now also serve as first responders in the aftermath of terrorist attacks, and collaborate with the Department of Homeland Security on thwarting biological terrorist threats.
Yes, when terror strikes, the bureaucrats who can’t even deliver your mail on time should be the ones in charge of life and death decisions.
CNSNews writes:
President of The National Association of Letter Carriers Fredric Rolando, has several ideas to increase the responsibility of some postal workers. Among them is to outfit postal trucks with sensors so letter carriers can thwart biological terrorist attacks, according to recent reports.
Rolando testified before Congress in March of 2011 that there were lots of ideas for new services that could be provided “adding to what letter carriers already do to protect community and national security.”

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 9:08pmI work for USPS, it‘s the best group of people I’ve work with and among the smartest on average. You try to remember 700 address east with 1-4 last names in a single house and yes, we’ll make mistakes. More than anything, the top of the post office is fat and stupid, it’s government, I know this and we do the best we can with far to much micromanagement.
I tell you this though. In a disaster, I and many other carriers would be there to help, just like any of you would be. We live in these places we work. In no way would any of them do anything that this suggests. Oh sure, they’d tell us… and then we’d go on about our day with a shake of the head and a chuckle.
It’s easy to bash the carriers, but they work hard in pretty crap weather (at least we in the midwest, 100 degree summers and a blizzard, hurray!) The union sucks, it’s basically worthless and 75% of us know it. This is just the guy at the top blowing smoke to cover his over paid butt.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 10:58pmThe biggest problem with the Post Office is Congress and the People.
“The People” Refuse to close any post office, they want “someone elses” office closed, but not “theirs” even though they probably have 2 others with in 10 miles.
People still want 6 day a week delivery, I dont even check my mail but 1 maybe 2 time a week max, the rest of the time it just sits in the box. If delivery went to a M, W, F for Business and T, Th for Residential or some variant of that. That would DRASTICALLY reduce costs….
Also make sure there is at Minimum 15 Miles between Post offices and Increase Public Private Partnership with Fedex Store UPS Store and other Shipping Stores so they can offer TRUE PO Box services and other services currently reserved for official post offices., That would also Drastically reduce expenses.
That will maintain the constitutional goal of the Post Office, to have communications to areas that would not be served by the private sector (and yes there are some still) but cut the cost to the tax payer to an absolute minimum even making the post office profitable

Posted on June 16, 2011 at 11:19pmI also work at USPS. I am a city letter carrier who works in -10 degree weather to over 100 degree weather. This winter I slipped on ice and ended up in the hospital for 2 days with a concussion. I have been bitten by 4 dogs and attacked by many others.
Report Post »I try very hard to get my customers mail right. Sure I make a mistake once every month or two. I am a human after all. When I am gone on my day off or on vacation I have no control over who does my route. I come back to nasty comments written on the mail about what an idiot I am.
Management constantly presses us to finish our routes faster so we can carry mail off of another route when they are gone. They split up routes quite often because of very few substitutes. (They always have a hiring freeze for part time carriers) Reading these comments makes me feel terrible even though I can see how people can come to these conclusions.
Residents move all the time without changing their addresses and new people move in without letting us know. Friends and family move in and out with residents. Many of them expect us to somehow keep up with their lives.
I don’t have much time to pay attention to who gets what mail. However, I do know who gets piles of political mail, both liberal and conservative. If you get a lot of either your carrier will know. I belong to the NALC. I would love to quit and wish more carriers felt the same way. Just so you know in my office about 40 percent of our carriers are conservative. There are abou

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 8:43pmJust great! All we need now is for a government agent coming to our doors everyday, checking out who we get mail from, eyeballing our property, etc, etc. Next on the agenda postal employees will be empowered to enter our homes and do searches on a hunch just like the FBI. Then they will want to put government spy cams in our homes. This is not planet earth. Surely I have been abducted by aliens while I was sleeping last night. Cannot afford to stay in business.
Cannot compete with the private sector.
Went bankrupt years ago, now subsidised with BILLIONS each quarter.
They see the end is near, so they are desperate to find some new job to do.
Sorry, Charlie. Game over. You lose.
Government should not be in competition with private businesses! In order for the government-run business to do well, the privately run businesses must suffer. In order for the private ones to prosper, government must suffer. It is a CLEAR conflict of interests for the government to compete with the private sector. They exist solely to DEFEND our rights. The government is not a person with its own rights. It is a SERVICE established BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, not to serve its own self interests!
