Couple Wins $11.2 Million Jackpot...Then Gives it All Away

A Canadian couple that won over $11 million (Canadian) has given it all away. Beneficiaries include friends, family, charities, hospitals, and even the local fire department.

The Daily Mail reports:

Allen and Violet Large, both in their 70s, said their good fortune earlier this year had been a ‘big headache’ and they had decided against going on a spending spree.

‘What you’ve never had, you never miss,’ Violet, 78, told the Toronto Star.

She and Allen, 75, eventually decided it was better to give than receive and were totally at ease with handing over the money.

The couple has been married for 36 years and called the money “nothing” compared to having “each other.”

But it‘s not as if the couple couldn’t have used the money for other things. When they won the jackpot, Violet was undergoing cancer treatment including chemo therapy and surgery. No matter.

The couple reportedly gave money to the hospitals where Violet received treatment, as well as cemeteries, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and churches.

“It made us feel good,” said Violet. “And there’s so much good being done with that money.”

Will this couple be Glenn’s “Charity Award” winner for next year’s event in DC?

Don’t be fooled….the Govt got their share in taxes…..I’m also sure there covered all their bases like hospitals, doctors, cemetery. It’s also really hard to give it all away when you have kids too, dont think they do, since the report only said family. Still it’s a good chunk of changes going out to help those in need. God smiled apon them, they smiled back in kind. God bless them and the rest of us we need it.

This couple is so sweet! It is so refreshing to read good news. I love that they have been together for 36 years and still are smiling together. I got tears in my eyes reading this article. God please bless Violet and Allen.

This story reminds me of Ann Murray’s song, Good News.

I am in awww of these people, that is how old school people are, this is what we use to be taught here in America, these people are hero’s, an I am sure that God has a spot for them when they arrive home, I truly am amazed at what these great people did, that’s just awesome!

I know that some are not going to understand what I say here, but it’s important for people to know.
First, these are obviously good people that have their priorities straight. I have a great admiration for them. However, being a “good person” or giving money to the needy/poor does not “earn” salvation. Salvation cannot be earned! For Christians the requirement is to believe in Jesus, the Christ AND to keep the commandments. Salvation is by the grace of God. But, faith without works is dead. I truly hope that these people are “saved”, but I have known other good people that were athiests and as a Christian that reads the Bible, I know that they died without God… without salvation. Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth and the life, and their is no way to the Father but by me.” I suppose that their may be other religions that teach that salvation can be earned, but I don’t know about them.

Not knowing anything about their hearts, I would have to assume that they did what they did not in order to gain favor with God, but because of the grace they have already been given through Christ. They demonstrate to others what has already been done for them.

They thought the money caused them headaches before … wait till the Canadian government wants them to pay taxes on their winnings. Imagine the paper trail that they’ll have to generate to satisfy the Canadian equivalent of the IRS when they say, “Oh, that … we gave it all away.” Yeah, right.

It’s very un-selfish of them and they have their reasons. You have to think that they both can’t be in 100% agreement with each other. Why didn’t she keep aside some for her cancer treatments and hospital bills? Would she rather have the rest of Canada pay her medical bills since they have the glorious socialized medicine? If that is the case, which I don’t know, it would be shameful. If they did set aside money, good for them.

@White Devil – to my understanding, under a socialized medicine system she has no choice but to have the rest of Canada pay her bills. She is not permitted to pay privately for any medical treatment. Bless them for giving it to people and organizations who can use it – the Jon Huntsman school of giving.

Be careful for what you wish for. Winning a large amount of money results in very real stress as everyone is trying to get some, including the IRS. You are constantly trying to protect your new wealth as everyone now knows you have it. So giving it away is actually to only sane thing to do. I hope they will be safe from the predators.

Obviously, this couple has each other. They are happy with what they‘ve got and are not looking to spend money on materials ’wants and ‘needs”!

Nobody knows when they’re doing to die. You could win this money at the age of 21 and die the next minute.

Once again, let’s not stoop to the likes of the Huffington Post or Moveon and MediaMatters.

My wife passed a year ago. Her dogs were very upset and ATE all of their plastic and fuzzy toys. I had to clean up the mess and bought them leather and rope toys, which they did not enjoy, but they couldn’t tear up or eat. Suddenly, a few months ago, the dogs started playing with squeaky toys, plush animals, and plastic things they had never had before. They are indoor dogs, and I live alone. I can‘t understand to save my life where these animals got all of these new toys if she isn’t giving them to the dogs. There are more toys in their rooms now than there ever were before. Take it with you? Maybe not. Bring it back? Maybe.
