Crafty Canine Manages Houdini-Like Escape From Vet’s Office

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — After three late-night escape attempts from an Oregon veterinarian’s office, a German shepherd named Jack finally made it.
The Medford Mail Tribune reports the crafty canine managed to pull open his kennel, trip the dead bolt on the clinic’s back door and pull down the handle to get outside.
He set off three motion-detector alarms on the way and managed to rip open four bags of food.
The dog roamed seven miles from the vet’s office, but only made it home when animal control officers took him to a shelter where he was reunited with his worried family.
A veterinarian calls the dog’s recovery from flulike symptoms “impressive.”
The Medford Mail Tribune has more details on what it calls the “canine Houdini”:
Jack, suffering from a strange flu-like illness, was also exhibiting symptoms of pneumonia. Lethargic and declining to eat, Jack was hooked up to intravenous antibiotics. By Wednesday, he was perking up a little. But on Thursday morning, Billeci got the shocking call that Jack was missing.
“I went hysterical when I got the call,” she said. “My concern was that he would lay down in a ditch and die.”
Sierra said he and his staff were dumbfounded to find the big dog missing from his kennel that morning. They searched the clinic and found clear evidence that Jack’s appetite was back. Four bags of food had been ripped open.
Sierra said he shut down the hospital and joined the full-scale search.
“Jack is a wonderful dog,” Sierra said. “But he was so sick he could barely walk. Then, 72 hours later, he’s on the lam.”
The clinic’s security company said police had been notified after motion detector alarms had been tripped at 10:30 p.m., 1:30 a.m. and again at 4:45 a.m., Billeci said.

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 1:48amOur German Shepherd can open the door to go out the french doors to cruise off the deck or relieve himself. The he comes back in to be with “his family.” Glad he got back safely. No wonder the Navy Seals jump with them.

I have two dogs, and they are very intelligent, much smarter than most humans unfortunatley. most of todays younger generation couldnt put a patch on My dogs a$$. My older dog is a sheppard husky mix, and the younger is an austrailian blue heeler, I wouldnt trade them for anything or anybody.

Posted on May 10, 2011 at 9:35pmI just love dogs. I promised my last dog, a black lab named Jake, that I would someday in the future ask Jesus to raise him from his resting place. Might be the only dog in heaven for all I know. I’ll be stuck scooping poop forever off the streets of gold. :)

Posted on May 10, 2011 at 8:31pmGerman Shepards are the smartest dogs in the world. We had one that knew how to spell TREAT. and when you mentioned or spelled that, she would go right to the treat can and wait, if you didn’t get her one, she would pout and put on a show, until she got one. Trained us real good.

come on .. it’s ok to put a little light hearted happy ending story with a twist of mystery and danger into the blaze now and then. if all we focus on is the negative in life how are we to see the positive and what is worth fighting for? besides a little break from time to time will allow us to find the solutions that we need.
love this dog… had an escape artist or two myself. looks like a story that Mark Levin would post.

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 1:00amI can testify to the awesome intelligence of Shepherds. I have a 10 year old 120 lb. shepherd that is a retired search and rescue dog. I am now teaching him to search for gold in the old farm fields around my house. Unfortunately, he was a rescue dog that I adopted, so I don’t know his commands. He is by far the most patient, well-mannered dog I have ever had. What a blessing!
