Critic Roger Ebert Apologizes for Using N-Word by Using N-Word

When film critic Roger Ebert heard that editors were censoring out the N-word from a new version of “Huckleberry Finn” and “Tom Sawyer” he sounded off on Twitter. That sounding off included using the N-Word. When he realized that might not have been the best choice, he decided to apologize…using the N-word.

The first controversial tweet came on Wednesday (redacted by HuffPo):

Critic Roger Ebert Apologizes for Using N Word by Using N WordEbert faced fierce criticism for that message, and one person pointed because he’s white would probably never be called either. So, in one of the smartest moves in the history of tweeting, he apologized for it by using the word again:

Critic Roger Ebert Apologizes for Using N Word by Using N Word

Part of thinks that “apology” is slightly sarcastic.

Don’t anybody call me a “cool cat” or I’ll sue em. Hear that? I am offended when somebody calls me cool, or hip. And don’t call me by my first name. I get offended at that. Not my last name either. I like being called by my initials sometime. I’ll let you know when. In the meantime, anything you call me will be wrong. Unless I say it’s ok. Got it? But I can call myself anything I want because I own myself. But you don‘t own me so don’t call me anything. And if you call me anything, anything at all, ….I’ll sue you.

My father has a copy of Webster’s Dictionary from 1879. Up until the early 1900′s, the N word was define by Webster as: a low class of people. There was no mention of race. Grant you, words are what we make them. Back during the publishing of Huckleberry Finn the word was mostly associated with the black race. Black race, can I say that?

I say it 50 times a day on a good day… To blacks who welcome it… They say “You my _igga“ and I say ”and you my honky”
I’m white – live between the hood and the projects – get along with everyone, but occasionally get a half can of soda or an empty 40 tossed out a car window at me. Depends on the level of “organizing” going on at the time (usually a 5 day half life on the animosity/racism). I do steer clear of crowds when i see a bullhorn.. It’s common sense in my World!

I made a reply earlier that was censored out because I used that word. I wonder if I was a black woman would I have been allowed to say it?
I was raised in a black area of Phoenix when I was a kid and I was trying to point out that the blacks in these areas are far more racist than any white person I know who has ever said the word ni&&er (that OK blaze?) I was thrown into oncomming traffic by some black highschool kids, I don’t know a single person who would cheer that kind of behavoir but I have seen blacks do it. Perhaps if they would come out of those black stronghold neighborhoods they could see for themselves that most whites don’t give a fig what color they are. Their black leaders are the ones keeping them enslaved by promoting fear and hatred.

      @Kate

I really don’t mind a word being “off limits” socially if we all agree it’s offensive. It’s when any group refers to itself constantly, in a positive sense, with a word but somehow others cannot, that I take umbrage. Yes, I’m insensitive, but if it‘s good for the goose it’s sauce for the gander in my book.

The F- word has become almost common language now and the c-word, why do we balk at the n-word
If I am sitting somewhere eating my lunch or something and people are using that type of language I get up and leave, but if I‘m in a situation where I can’t leave I ask people to tone the language down. I don‘t care what people have to say to each other but I do wish I didn’t have to be subjected to it.

Those kinds of words are so common. If I’m going to insult a person, I want it to posess some sense of style or uniqueness.

Maybe: “Your socks are ill fitting” or “Go stick your head in a pig” or at a minimum something modestly creative or witty.

The F-word is so common that nobody remembers if you say it to them, but me, I like to leave a lasting impression on people.

Like the Constitution, the words should be left in for historical context.

We’re not those people anymore, but deleting the history only allows for the repeat of it, but someone who never knew better because he wasn’t taught.

I once had a starry eyed optimist tell me that if they went back and deleted all referenced of racism in history, that eventually (with “new” thought and deletion of the “old” thought from the record) the words would disappear from the language.

There’s optimism, then there’s optimistic realism. I am a practitioner of the latter and I pray I’m never that gullible.

It is hypocrisy to ban or eddit this type of language out. It will never go away.

Personally I stopped looking to buy the classics in print once I found them as free e-texts at http://www.gutenberg.org

These e-texts are required to match the original text and even if the N-word were to be edited out one can put it back in with a quick search and replace.

Okay, so here’s the thing. I’m not black enough (~10%) to use the “N-Word” in public but I am white enough to use *******, Honky, or Whitie, all of which are all so ridiculous sounding. The few times in my life that anyone of “color” used any of these towards me I simply couldn’t stop laughing.

The fact that it is okay to use the word if the conversation is black-to-black but not white-to-black only serves to prove that it is the person that _takes_ it as an insult when it comes from a white and not a black that is simply hurting themselves.

The use of the N-word as an insult will disappear once the black community begins to laugh it off rather then get all indignant and demand retribution.

Change your mind – and the rest will follow.

If someone is IGNORANT A N D SLOTHFUL, then the name applies. It doesn’t mean it replies to a person of color OR race. Clive- Seriously? Africans themselves played a role in the slave trade. The Africans that participated in the slave trade would sell their captive or prisoners of war to European buyers. Selling captives or prisoners was common practice amongst Africans and Arabs during that era. The prisoners and captives that were sold were usually from neighboring or enemy ethnic groups. These captive slaves were not considered as part of the ethnic group or ‘tribe’ and kings held no particular loyalty to them. At times, Kings and businessmen would sell the criminals in their society to the buyers so that they could no longer commit crimes in that area. Most other slaves were obtained from kidnappings, or through raids that occurred at gunpoint through joint ventures WITH the Europeans

Exactly. Though there IS racism in America, it is far less than the black community will ever admit. But, without using it as a crutch and blowing it all out of proportion, they would have to finally start admitting that the holes in their lives, the failures in their lives, the lack of success in their lives is due to their own choices and determination to succeed…and not some sheet wearing secret society conspiring to hold them back.

The first sign that they finally “get it” will be when they start boycotting those of their own race who use the word whether in music or conversation.

I saw it in HS, and before that, in Grammer School (in the 50′s). If you research the things they’ve said, the positions they hold, you can come to no other conclusion.

This hyphenated American mentality keeps stirring racial tension. R Ebert’s slip is NOTHING compared to the fact that we voted for a black who went to a racist black church for 20 YEARS! Don’t tell me he never heard Wright spouting anti-white, anti-US, anti-Jewish garbage from his racist mouth.
AND…HOW ABOUT our Attorney General? I guess the Black Panthers at the Philly polling location was just fine. No problem with that. I would be a racial-coward if I didn’t mention that, so, there I mentioned it. OK, Eric? Anyone who critisizes Ebert is nuts.

I agree with the people who recognized that using the N word is a sign of disrespect; just as using a derogatory term for any other group of people is reprehensible. Wake up America! They are using these things to separate us, to tear us apart–we are not hyphenated anything–we are Americans; and the sooner we all stick together to fight those who believe in Communism/Socialism or any other non-liberty loving “ism”, the sooner we’ll all accomplish being the best each of us CAN be! *End of sermon*

The N word is a hateful word. Its the only word we can’t use in America, unless one is black. I don’t use the N word, but I don’t like the PC dance around it. When Huck Finn can’t be read in schools we have a serious problem. When we “protect” Americans of African descent , so as not to offend them, we are actually being racist towards them because we are treating them like children, just like the Plantation owners.

Who put out the memo in the 1980′s when it become PC to say African-American and not Black? No skin tone is pure black or pure white but I’m not offended when someone calls me white instead of Caucasian-American.

Its all intimidation and guilt tripping. The current mode of PC think is that only white people (excuse me, Caucasian-Americans) can be racist, because white people have the power. Well, now that Obama is in power, and that caveat no longer holds true, is our President, according to PC definition, making it acceptable to use the N word? Of course not, but its fun to use their logic against them.

America has many ethnicities, Irish, Italian, Jewish, etc. There are slur words for all of them. What about protecting them? What about protecting WASPS. they are in the minority now.

      Is “*******” hate speech too?

” Well, now that Obama is in power, and that caveat no longer holds true,”

This does not follow. Having a black president != black people being in power. The power in society lies firmly in white hands.

Eberrt really shouldn‘t assume he’ll never be called a ‘slave.’

I already work 44% of the year to earn money that is handed over to one of my various government masters. If the power hungry socialists get their way, we’ll all be slaves soon enough.

Ever hear the word “niggard” or “niggardley? You can find it in the Koran.

These words are in reference to a person who takes and takes, but does not give, does not carry their own weight, thereby dragging others down (kinda like the fat guy in the U.K. on the site, funny he’s white but a niggard no less.)

The N-word in America is a phrase based to the slave trade. Many slaves at the time were captured from areas around the Niger River, easy to see the pronounciation.

Therein lies the issue with it. I don’t see an issue with the black community using it, it’s their word. But it‘s really lame that I can’t use it, especially as a term of friendship and endearment towards good friends of mine who also happen to be black, (again its used like this in the black community, both as a term of endearment and in not so friendly situations.) So it’s really the spirit of the word that is important, not the phrase itself.

What really gets me most upset is the Hispanic community uses it and that is generally accepted, but as a white, I cannot use it. I’m fine with being called honkey if I can use the N word. If my friend wants to call me honkey, he’s my friend, I wouldn’t hang out with him if he used the phrase in a derogatory manner.

As a Christian, all the skin color BS is smoke and mirrors, I worry about the Spirit. Unfortunately, some don’t see it that way, and I do not wish to be misunderstood.

I try to use the word everyday. Now what do you simple minded folk think of that or me. And by the way I don’t care what you think. One day we will be free to speak but as long as there are hate laws and politally correctness we will continue to go into darkness. God I love the idea of America!

Folks, just don’t say the N-word. It’s offensive and very disrespectful. Also don’t use the C-word (the real C-word, not “*******”) or the various racial/ethnic slurs aimed at Jews, Hispanics, Asians, the Irish, Italians, Germans, etc. It’s as simple as that.

Because you see, it’s not an issue of freedom or PC–it’s an issue of respect. It‘s the same reason that I don’t walk into your church and take a s**t in the pews (as ironic as that would be). It’s the same reason that we were all brought up not to call people names. So please, all of you stop being so infantile and try to be civil to each other.

…is our President, according to PC definition, making it acceptable to use the N word?
      ————–
Nope, but blacks can now use “*******” as a racial slur, i.e., black hate speech is now protected by black Traitor #2, Eric Holder.
