CT School Says ‘Know English or No Diploma’

A new requirement from the New London, CT school board will mandate that all students must know English in order to graduate from high school.
Before anyone starts screaming about racism or how unfair this new rule is, consider the facts behind New London, CT’s stipulation that high school students must be proficient in English before they can receive a diploma.
1. The rule will not be applied until 2015
2. Students will have several different tests from which to choose
3. You have until your 21st birthday to establish that you have a reasonable grasp of the English language.

No one is saying that you can’t continue to also use your primary language, but you should also learn the language of a country to which you have LEGALLY migrated.

we also will not patronize Target etc, with its bilingual signs, maybe we will when they bring in DECENT respectful languages like Gaelic and Polish and German.

My sailboat is in NL and oversees Electric Boat(Groton) , who builds the best Fast Attack Subs in the world. It’s exciting to see Subs all the time as well as the USCG Eagle. Posted on May 17, 2011 at 1:54amI took my son out of ct. schools from 3- 5th, put him in back in in 6th,in a Barkhamsted Ct. and I was told he HAD to take Spanish,that it is mandatory in their town from k-12. I said no, he never had it before and I wanted him to be able to focus on “regular” classes in case he wasn’t up to the rest and also reintegrating back in and that Spanish all of a sudden would be to much. I fought like hell and was flat out refused. I then told my son to not worry about it , he has my permission to get an F. Why is it ok for our kids to HAVE TO take Spanish, yet there‘s an issue if we ask that our lands language is learned there’s a problem. Sick!!!! and Sick of it!!!!!

there are no special choice of tasts or waiting around till your 21. you do or don’t this is racist and unfair if one sees the fact that certain minorities still get off light.

Posted on May 17, 2011 at 8:39amIt’s a PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE. Think about it, someone calls 9-1-1. WITHIN SECONDS the operator needs to know if he/she should send fire, police, medical or some combination. He/She can not afford the time to figure out what language someone is talking and find a translator, someone could die. Once the right help is on the way THEN he/she can find out the persons FIRST LANGUAGE, get a translator and get the details.
