‘Cupcakegate’: TSA Defends Its Confiscation of a Woman’s Cupcake

PEABODY, Mass. (The Blaze/AP) — Are you ready for the latest update on “Cupcakegate?” As we reported in late December, the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) confiscated a frosted cupcake from a Massachusetts woman flying from Las Vegas. Now, the agency is defending its actions.

The TSA says in a blog comment posted Monday the cupcake was packed in a jar filled with icing, which is considered a gel under a policy designed to secure travelers from terrorists seeking to evade detection by using explosives made of plastics, liquids or gels.

TSA Defends Confiscation of Womans Cupcake

TSA blogger Bob Burns defended the agency in what he dubbed “Cupcakegate.” He wrote:

This will be short and “sweet.” Like many of you, when I think of a cupcake, I don’t think of it being in a jar. However, the photo below shows the “cupcake” that was prohibited from being taken into the cabin of a plane last month.

I wanted to make it clear that this wasn’t your everyday, run-of-the-mill cupcake. If you’re not familiar with it, we have a policy directly related to the UK liquid bomb plot of 2006 called 3-1-1 that  limits the amount of liquids, gels and aerosols you can bring in your carry-on luggage. Icing falls under the “gel” category.  As you can see from the picture, unlike a thin layer of icing that resides on the top of most cupcakes, this cupcake had a thick layer of icing inside a jar.

Here’s the image, showing the difference between a normal cupcake and a cupcake “in a jar,” that was shared on the blog:

TSA Defends Confiscation of Womans Cupcake

Jar Image Credit: Consumertraveler.com

Peabody resident Rebecca Hains was barred from taking her cupcake onto a plane last month when a TSA agent said icing in the jar exceeded amounts of gels allowed in carry-on luggage. Hains has called that “terrible logic.”

The TSA says travelers can take cakes, pies and cupcakes through security checkpoints but should expect they might get additional screening. And, as Burns writes, “if something doesn’t seem right, there is always the potential you won’t be able to take it through.”

TSA is a joke. American people are idiots for putting up with it. I will not fly until they change their policy. We do not need to be groped by TSA agents.

Why isn’t there a data base, for people who have no criminal record? Why isn’t there a data base for frequent flyers? Why isn’t there a data base for people who have never had any issues, and lead a normal life?

There are plenty of people who would fit into this style of data base. But no, we lay down like beaten dogs, and tell them to go ahead and fondle my crouch, and while your at it molest my child!

Now more than ever, we need Ron Paul.

“I think the Patriot Act is unpatriotic because it undermines our liberty. I’m concerned, as everybody is, about the terrorist attack. Timothy McVeigh was a vicious terrorist. He was arrested. Terrorism is still on the books, internationally and nationally, it’s a crime and we should deal with it.

We dealt with it rather well with Timothy McVeigh. But why I really fear it is we have drifted into a condition that we were warned against because our early founders were very clear. They said, don’t be willing to sacrifice liberty for security.

Today it seems too easy that our government and our congresses are so willing to give up our liberties for our security. I have a personal belief that you never have to give up liberty for security. You can still provide security without sacrificing our Bill of Rights.”
      Ron Paul

Who other than Ron Paul has been warning us over and over about the dangers of laws like the Patriot Act, the NDAA, and the abuses of the TSA?

Who in their right mind would vote for a candidate who actually backs this kind of insanity?

Wake up people, every candidate in the current crop backs the TSA’s constitutional abuses, and Ron Paul sticks out like a shining beacon begging you to help stop the madness.

You are correct. We refust to fly anywhere until it changes too. These dumb Americans who value their trips to Disneyland and other places more than their freedoms don’t deserve freedom. We are finding out how stupid Americans truly are. Well, there are lots of stupid people all over the world but for us to put up with the TSA crap is rediculous.

What we must do is to vote for candidates who condemn unconstitutional laws, as voting for such traitors and then complaining about laws like the Patriot Act is downright ridiculous.

The ONLY candidate in the current crop who openly condemns laws that allow the TSA to violate your rights is RON PAUL!

Refusing to fly doesn’t hurt the TSA. It only hurts you and the airlines. Do you think the TSA could give a flip whether or not you fly? You asked why the American people put up with this and your solution is not to fly? That’s not doing anything about it.

marinerdaddy – here‘s what’s going to happen, and refusing to fly won’t work anymore. TSA is going to start their security checks at bus stations, train stations, they are aleady doing it at truck weighing stations in some states. It will end up that we can’t do any interstate travel without the TSA. Because an airplane isn’t the only place a terrorist can do harm.

Americans are used to freedom that’s why we balk when confronted with the TSA. My sister-in-law is from the Netherlands, and she’s perfectly alright with being groped. She described to me how they searched her. They search with the palm facing the body (not the back of the hand), cup each breast, run a finger along the bottom of the breast, run a hand inside the waistband and partially down into the panties. I asked if she was alright with this and she said if it keeps her safe on a plane, yes. She just doesn’t understand freedom. Our President is the same way. He didn’t grow up in America, but had his formative years in Indonesia (ages 5-10). If you also look up the history of Indonesia, he got there at the end of the Indonesian Killins of 1965 (which lasted into 1966-67) There were bodies hanging in the streets, mutilated. Look it up.

Even if what you say is true, states have no more of a right to ignore the constitution than the Federal government does…correct?

      http://investmentwatchblog.com/heavily-armed-homeland-security-officers-set-up-id-checkpoint-in-social-security-office/

Residents of Leesburg, Florida were shocked to see their local Social Security office turned into a random Homeland Security checkpoint Tuesday morning, as DHS officers armed with semiautomatic rifles and accompanied by sniffer dogs checked identifications of locals.

“With their blue and white SUVs circled around the Main Street office, at least one official was posted on the door with a semiautomatic rifle, randomly checking identifications. And other officers, some with K-9s, sifted through the building,”reports the Daily Commercial.

The activity was part of Operation Shield, an unannounced drill conducted by the DHS’ Federal Protective Service centered around “detecting the presence of unauthorized persons and potentially disruptive or dangerous activities.”

Thomas Milligan, district manager for the Social Security Administration office, said staff were not informed their offices were about to be stormed by armed FPS officers. DHS officials refused to answer questions asked by local media and left with no explanation at noon.”

“One of the criticisms I make is to what I refer to as more of a Libertarianish right. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. That is not how traditional conservatives view the world. There is no such society that I am aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture.” — Rick Santorum

I do check mine and there are some I miss, but it‘s getting to the point that it seems like some either don’t care or don’t know.

Sometimes ,dear ,it isn’t the failure of spelling ,but ,of typing.I use multiple keyboards, all set at different keystroke rates.Sometimes I make multiple mistakes due to it.Other times I don’t.Furthermore, I learned to type on a true typewriter, not a computer keyboard. The layout isn’t the same. For what its worth, the keyboard layout of the old manual typewriters isn’t the same as the new fangled electric ones. Keyboard/piano players sometimes become so intent on writing that they catch themselves plucking at the keyboard. You ought to see the mish mash of garbage that gets typed when that happensI I learned very quickly not to type reports or anything that required my total attention late at night for that reason myself.

I’d comment on the typo in the headline – Cupecakegate’ – instead of “Cupecakegate” but sure enough I’d be fussed at for being too anal retentive.

They don’t actually confiscate them. When Janet starts to loose her girlish figure the word goes out to take any special desserts. So every time she looses 5 lbs they have to supply her with food that will make her cubbly little (?) butt chubbier. What you have to be awafre of is when whe hosts a dinner party then whey will confiscate all food stuffs . The cupcake was probably on the nexrt plane with a TSA agent to hand deliver it to Janet.

      OMG

This cupcake in a jar is no different than other liquids and gels that are limited or banned. Not that I like the TSA rules. I hope I never have to fly because I can’t decide between a naked picture of me or being groped.

The patriot in government is in New Hampshire today, campaigning for the presidency based on a platform of constitutionally framed government…

and being bashed by the owner of this very webpage for doing so.

Freedom isn’t free – it will cost the media and the establishment billions.

I think you’re right about not having an election. But I think it’s bigger than Obama staying in power. I think it’s about the overthrow of the United States. I think Obama may be just a useful idiot.

I bet she fit the terrorist profile: white, middle aged mother/grandmother, and not pictured with HLS or on the post office‘s ’most wanted’.

Maybe they pick on white grandmas because they have a quota and they’re lazy. They know they won’t find anything on us – and they easily have their required number of victims – no sweat. It’s probably fun, too, watching us try so hard to jump through their hoops with our arthritic knees, bad backs, glaucoma and cataracts, and profound despair over a world gone mad.

This is per the mouth of my family tree that were passed down generation to generation. There are things I didn’t invent because of big government, and my grand-father didn’t invent things because of big government, and my great, and greater grand-father‘s didn’t invent things because of big government. Who knows, they may have invented the things that lead to the things that cured most diseases. The world may never know.

baddoggy said “this is worse than WWII germany”

This proves you just have to let libs and paulbots speak and they will marginalize themselves.

While banning cupcakes from planes is stupid, it is hardly worse than sending Jews to concentration camps. Oh wait, I forgot, to a paulbot losing a Jew is the same as losing a cupcake…both have about the same value in their eyes.
