‘Cut and Die’: Is Wannabe Teen Pop-Star Rebecca Black the Most Hated Sensation Since Sarah Palin?

Did pop-music end with Rebecca Black? Is Rebecca Black, 13, the worst singer in the world? Should she “cut and die” as one person has urged her to do?

Cut and Die: Is Wannabe Teen Pop Star Rebecca Black the Most Hated Sensation Since Sarah Palin?

Who is this young girl, you ask? Black is the internet sensation in the music video “Friday” which debuted on YouTube last month and has garnered over 17 million views since. “Friday” is now a top-40 hit on iTunes and Black has even surpassed Justin Bieber, Canada’s falsetto pop-boy, as a hot topic of discussion on Twitter.

But Black’s meteoric rise to fame happened for all the wrong reasons–or just one wrong reason: people hate her dang song, which is an innocent-enough autotuned hit about partying on the weekend and hanging out with your friends.

Sure, Black is no Britney Spears–she’s not even a Miley Cyrus–but her song is catchy enough, and arguably no worse than some of the other pop-garbage out there. So why does this 8th grader inspire such vitriol?

Rolling Stone has called Friday an “unintentional parody of modern pop.“ Time has said that the song is a ”whole new level of bad.” Yahoo asked “Is YouTube sensation Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’ the worst song ever?” And Slate called the song “disastrous.”

Cut and Die: Is Wannabe Teen Pop Star Rebecca Black the Most Hated Sensation Since Sarah Palin?

Meanwhile, regular folks have taken aim at the young girl herself. In the comments section of a Comedy Central post about Black, she was called a Stepford Wife, a bitch, and a whore.

Though Black has taken heat for “Friday,” she didn’t even write the song:

Acing a casting-call audition, Black was invited to record one of two songs label heads had written for her. And, as part of a $2,000 package her mother paid for, they offered to produce an accompanying video in a bid to make a splash on YouTube. The song she picked: “Friday.”

“I didn’t write it at all,” Black said, clearing up a major misconception. “The other song was about adult love–I haven’t experienced that yet. ‘Friday’ is about hanging out with friends, having fun. I felt like it was my personality in that song.”

Reflecting on how people have reacted to the song, Black told The Daily Beast, ”At times, it feels like I’m being cyberbullied,”

In an interview with Good Morning America today, Black elaborated. She said today that among the worst comments she has read online about herself are, “I hope you cut yourself and I hope you get an eating disorder so you’ll look pretty, and I hope you go cut and die.”

And the bullying does not end in dark world of online comments. A bizarre social networking website called 4chan is organizing something called “Operation Black Friday” to cruelly ambush Black in real life:

here are some simple orders. 12pm est, start calling the school with all of the numbers and tardy bullshit, fax as many nudes of ANYTHING (girl blowing horse for example) and put rebecca’s name on it. at 1pm est DDoS Ark Music Factory. at 3pm est, start requesting her (sorry excuse for) music on the radio

According to Gawker, the 4channers are trying to track down Black’s home address:

A former student at Black’s Orange County middle school posted the contact information for the school tonight, along with a copy of its calendar and a map of the campus. Others have started “doxing” Black—that is, digging up her and her parents’ contact and social networking information. They’ve already come up with a half-dozen potential home addresses.

That’s just creepy.

For something more wholesome, check out these two spoofs of “Friday”, via Hot Air.

That’s sadly what liberals today use for an excuse as free speech Seeker.

That is right up until someone threatens to bash their empty heads around like a grapefruit, then they whine for civility and so on. And while the grapefruit has useful innards, the liberal Neanderthal species‘ skull usually contains very little if any ’operable’ gray brain matter.

Especially after (in most cases) a lifetime of drug, sexual and alcohol abuse since about 4th grade if even schooled in the first place, before embarking on their sad, empty, lonely pathetic existences hating just about everyone and everything they encounter throughout their lives.

The blaze is following in the footsteps of 4 chan. All this girl needs is a well written song. Tha song is bad. Can’t blame her for that though cause the writer and producer should know better. A really bad song can be a career killer. Hopfully she will make enough money off this to get the songs she needs. As far as the blaze is concerned I think liberalism is starting to show. What a stir that caused and perhaps more was the reaction girls had to Elvis Presley,

Welcome to my world, Rebecca Black. And if you want to know what I’m talking about, google “David Gonterman.” I’ve got the same problems myself.

And I’ve seen the video. It seems like a nice garage effort. I think the main reason why people are dissing her so because she isn’t being preened and pampered by the big media, being presented as a harlet like Britiany Spears or Miley Cyrus. It looks like a sweet and good girl using a personal computer to show her talent on the internet, and she ends up getting the usual mixed response. Some people would like her, others wouldn’t care about it, and then there are the “2G1C” group, those who consider her to be the most offensive person in the world since Hitler, but consider the “Two Girls One Cup” shock porn video to be high-class performance art worthy of an oscar, not to mention an NEA grant.

It’s unfortunate that the “2G1C” crowd is getting all the free press here. I do hope you get over this, and you will, and you’ll find an excellent career in the music business. I’ll be seeing you in the “X Factor.”

I think you hit the nail on the head. I think it is because no big agency is making any money from it or getting the recognition. I would also add that she became a hit even though she did not plan on it.

Does anybody else remember a couple years back there were two twin girls in Europe made a song that had only simple wording repeated over and over again but it became a hit. All the big shots came out and criticized that it wasn’t music and that they were putting the music industry to shame.

It sad to think things like this can get so bad.

This seems to be a good teen/pre-teen song. We used to call these types of songs ‘bubble gum’ when I was a kid. We made fun of the music but we didn’t wish harm to the performer. Progressivism shows a definite path and it is toward dependence, uncivil (ie. Wisconsin) and anti-Freedom. Progressives are very intolerant of anything outside of their narrow view of the world.

Yes, this song is excruciatingly awful, but only in an aesthetic sense. It is not nearly as morally, spiritually and intellectually offensive as a lot of crap out there that kids are eating up. And for the brief period I could stand to watch the video she didn’t seem to be doing anything obscene or even suggestive. So, frankly, I‘m really not sure that she’s any worse than the Disney Channel, which I find artistically offensive on a deep, deep level.

4channers are not your typical bully whose parents can just step in. They tend to be in their 30‘s and 40’s, live in their parents basement, don’t bathe very often, don’t get any sun, still have their virginity (not by choice… they just aren’t attractive to the opposite sex because of looks and weight) and are very jealous that a person like Black can be a success while they will die alone.

4channers are the people who were bullied in real life and snapped permanently. The anonymity of the web gives them a false sense of power in fantasyland that, they feel, is denied them in the real world.

I feel sorry for these kids today who are being taught that they have a right to control how others speak about them. They are very poorly prepared for the real world where insults and abuse are part of the right of free speech. The bottom line is, when you put your work out in a public forum, you’re making yourself a public figure, You do it because you want to be famous, and you better be ready to take the bad along with the good.

Um…I am 39, and when I was in high school, our “rebellion” song was Beastie Boys “You gotta Fight For Your Right to Party’. Drove my elders nuts.
This is the kind of hyper-digitised music our teens are listening to, it is their generation, and their turn to piss us off. It is a never ending cycle that will run through eternity! Yeah, I think this is crap, but if my 13-year-old daughter digs it, i let her be. Her favorite “artist” is Eminem and that is ok. What we as the parents of these “degenerate” kids (as we were all once “degenerate” kids) need to do is talk to them and make sure they know how to survive in a world where teens go to parties. My 13-year-old is gonna be so hard core about the evils of boys by the time she goes to college she will be embarrassing the boys when they try their stupid tricks (as all us men did when we were boys!)
So don’t let this bother you, but instead use it as another opportunity to talk to your teen and make them understand virtue and honor, and teach them to be a good person. It ain’t that hard really.

Uh oh. Let’s see…she’s acting age appropriate, there is no cursing in the song, no bumping and grinding, fully dressed and she is making no political statements. Could this be why psychos are focusing on her? I really feel bad for the girl. It’s just a song–not a good one, but who cares. Britney couldn’t sing at all and how she compensated is being as over the top sexual as she could—and this started with her FIRST video which people have to ask why her parents approved of. Either way…

This is insanity. Pray for her safety.

Well I think she is just cute as a button. The song is a little immature and lame but it is catchy.I think if she had someone like Bob Foster the star maker she could be trained and do really well.Even if she didn’t get any training and stayed as she is, I mean look “The Monkeys” made it and they weren’t very good and had lame songs also. As far as those going after her on the internet I wish they could catch them and prosecute them.I don’t understand why kids do things like this. If I were her Mom I would be terrified for her.If I had a child that was doing the bullying I definitely would not spare the rod and ruin the child. What makes even kids want to be this mean.

Yep – If you are an adult. For a 13-14 year old girl…. Who knows how that kind of crap will affect them? I think the media hype only makes this kind of thing worse. I admit I am an old guy. 51. I was bullied a time or two and to be completely honest I probably “bullied” others once in a while when I was young. Back then it wasn’t that big of a deal. It was a fact of life – a rite of passage.

The military is a great example. In basic training (in any branch) you are torn down to your core in some respects. and then you learn to build yourself up. Ask My Sacred Honor – He will tell you his training was the toughest. I’ll tell you the Infantry School at Ft. Benning and jump school was much tougher. A SEAL or RANGER or RECONDO MARINE will say we are both nuts. But both of us look down on a raw recruit because he/she hasn’t gone through the same thing -yet. You pay your dues and THEN you talk smack.

The media makes being bullied into such a huge deal teenagers think it needs a drastic reaction. I don’t belive basic human nature has changed. The focus has been increased by the 24/7/365 media attention.

LOL, I am a rare example of a Marine. I agree that in boot camp, for ALL branches (except the Air Force Corporation) experience what you called a “break down and rebuilding”. That is necessary to make an individual into a militay, defence-minded person. But to say that my experience at parris Island was somehow “tougher” than what recruit Soldiers and Seamen (lol “seamen”) had to endure is rediculous. First, I have not been through the other services’ recruit training, and well, there is no second.
Also, I will submit that all Special Forces traing is aweful to endure, even the Air Force’s Search and Rescue teams. I don’t believe there is a scale for “toughest training” at that level. BUT, I have always said that the Navy SEALS is the best of the best of the best, SIR! (quoting “Men in Black”) Just look at the Somali pirate episode last year where 3/4 SEAL snipers scored head shots in rolling seas over a hundred yards away, ship-to-ship simultaneously. That is so far fetched it seems impossible, yet they did it. And the fourth shot incapacitated the hijacker.

I don’t see different branches as being superior to others (except normal airmen, but I reckon they are the “brains” of the armed forces) except on one point.
Marines are trained in their respective jobs, yes, but they are also trained as basic riflemen, and have constant traing to be infantrymen throughout their careers. Therefore, even an admin Marine knows how to pick up his gear and walk into a war zone and kill the enemy.
Can you, 82nd, tell me the same about an admin Soldier?

Obviously, there is a degenerate, destructive group of people out there that we never knew existed. They seem to be crawling out of the swamp and exposing themselves as really nasty reptiles. It just makes no sense that so many people (and I say that sarcastically) would be so vicious to a young girl who has done no harm to anyone. If this is a sign of the evil that is out there, we need to circle the wagons and protect our innocent young.

      1) I think that we are way overthinking this. My point was that it is possible to take a bunch of s$%^ and still be okay.
      2) That sometimes you have to go through a tough period to understand what you are really made of.
      3) The media is making things worse for our kids/grandkids
4)It is more than okay to be proud of your accomplishments in life, whatever they may be.
      5) Inter-service rivalry is part of the game, a healthy game if you ask me. Yes of course it takes every branch to make the whole thing work.
      6) Every insult I dishout I am more than willing to take.
      7) I believe everyone should believe their branch is the best!
      8) IF PLM served he is a strange animal. I can’t agree with anything he posted. That doesn’t make him wrong just odd to my way of thinking.

The story here is that coming on the heels of the Aussie bullying “incident”, the government wants to create a sympathetic story to justify further intrusion into our private lives. The media are itching to get the parents to say the magic words: “I think the government should do something about this because … ”

The government will step in to the rescue. They want to pass the school-principal-snooping-into-your-child’s-life-law. For instance, a high school in Lower Merion, PA was caught turning on the microphone and video cameras remotely, while students were supposed to be enjoying the privacy of their homes. They (administrators) then reported what they thought was illegal drug use. The school district was wrong and it was sued. The computers in question were issued by the school district. Beware of the Trojan Horse.
