‘Cut it or Shut it!’: Tea Party Says No to Budget Compromise at DC Rally Today

Jenny Beth Martin looked out on the rain-dampened crowd along Constitution Avenue and pointed over her shoulder at the Capitol.

“They heard us, but they’re not listening!” Martin, a tea party leader, told members of the movement that helped put Republicans in charge of the House last November.

The crowd booed.

Cut it or Shut it!: Tea Party Says No to Budget Compromise at DC Rally Today

Four months after the historic election, the populist force that helped drive Republicans to power is finding that its clout on Capitol Hill isn’t automatic.

What brings you out today, one tea party member was asked. “Saving our country, obviously.”

Sensitive talks over how many billions of dollars to cut from this year‘s federal budget have strayed far below the Republicans’ campaign promise to slash $100 billion. Rather than standing firm and allowing parts of the government to shut down until enough lawmakers came around, House Speaker John Boehner was doing exactly what the tea partiers thought they had elected Republicans to avoid: negotiating with President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats over spending cuts.

“Cut it or shut it!” chanted the crowd outside the Capitol on Thursday.

“I’m not talking about $5 billion or $6 billion or $10 billion. I’m talking about $100 billion,” said one tea party activist (seen in the picture above), speaking of the budget cuts.  According to the AP, $10 billion has been cut so far.

Among those not balking were some of the 87 freshmen Republicans, who more than anyone in the House owe their seats to the tea party juggernaut.

One group, Tea Party Nation, called for Boehner’s ouster. But the Ohio Republican made clear Thursday that, like it or not, a budget compromise loomed on the horizon.

Bullfeathers, shot back tea partyer Tom Altman.

“They’re chicken. They’re cowards,” said the 60-year-old resident of Westmoreland County, Pa., who says he’s been active in Republican politics. Of the House’s ruling GOP officials he said: “They’re our employees. We need to fire them.”

“It’s not the Republican freshmen, it’s Boehner and the Republican leadership,” said Cincinnati retiree Richard Ringo. “Last year, a lot of people thought, ‘Well, the Republicans are in power now, we can relax.‘ But they’re doing the same thing they always do, whether it’s the Republicans or the Democrats.”

Michele Bachmann spoke to the crowd today, cheering them on. “Stand firm. Hold us accountable. We love you,” she told the cheering group.

Cut it or Shut it!: Tea Party Says No to Budget Compromise at DC Rally Today

As tea partiers gathered in DC today to protest compromise on the budget cuts, there are also activists fighting the fiscally conservative fight on the state and local level, as ReasonTV reports below. Chris Littleton, president of the Ohio Liberty Council, says of his council’s tea party activism, “All of our focus is going to be state-based because we feel that DC is just–it’s not going to go too many places too fast right now.”

“We need to send responsibility back to the states,” Rand Paul said at the rally today.

Nothing of consequence can happen until the Senate and WH change hands….WE have to make sure that the Congress, Senate and WH will be occupied by Republicans (in the case of the senate and congress a majority) come 2012. Real meaningful reform and huge cuts can only happen when that scenario becomes reality. The Congress can only do so much with 2/3 rds of the Fed Gov’t are at odds with your policies. The Democrats are hoping to do what they have always done….blame the Repubs for the counries problems/mess it is in….the only poroblem with that is the left no longer dominates the media message so such a fantasy (that the ills of the country are soley Repubs fault) can no longer fly with any legitimacy. The fact that FNC has now taken over the #1 slot in dishing out the real news will only further erode and neutralize what the Dems have planned in the near future. It will backfire if they try this time around (the 95 shutdown was spun as a Repub want and it worked in the Dems favor)…This time it won;t work despite the fact that the Dems have no ontention of meeting the Congressional demands (100 billion in cuts by April 8th).

Do you know what is wrong with comments like yours? I think you do. They are insulting and show that you are the ignorant one. The word “Americans” is capitalized by the way, smarty. I am not Christian, nor am I ignorant (I own two health care companies) and speak and read four different languages — one of them being Mandarin. I attended the rally and met a lot of nice people who were nothing like you describe.

So go ahead and keep projecting frustrations about your life as it’s quite obvious. I‘m sorry you haven’t realized yet that you are smart enough to be an entrepreneur and actually provide jobs for people who work hard and who know that hard work gets you ahead in life. Instead at this moment you sit on your tiny soap box and complain. Get up and do something exciting with your life. People will actually feel like it’s worth listening to you then!

Amen, you Waskily Wabbit!! Due to a serious back injury two years I was forced to cut my business and income by 75%. Think about that … making only 25% of what you are making now. And I had to cut deep into everything that wasn’t a necessity. Sure, I don‘t eat like the Obama’s. I sure as hell don’t vacation like them. But I still work … landscaping. And I am proud of my work and happy to be able to please the much fewer less clients I now have. And I am equally proud that I do not and never will take one fricking penny from the taxes that you good folks pay into the government. I will have to be stopped from crawling to work before I take one cent. And I won’t take it then. And some folks say I should since I have both served in the military as well as taught the kids of the men and women in uniform. Call it stubborn pride not to ask for assistance if you will. I call it being a good citizen.
I plan my daily travels to be as economical as possible so that work and buying necessities are taken care of in one there-and-back trip. I gave up cable. I planted a veggie garden for a fellow apartment building dweller so he lets me go on the Internet via his router. Lights are not on in rooms where I am not. I bundle up in the winter and dress lightly inside in the summer and neither my heater nor A/C have been on since. I look for BOGO deals at the grocery store and have become a damned good cook while actually eating better with less. But I am not alone in being money-wise while penny-less. Many folks out there in this great land do the same. Single moms and single dads. College students hanging tight with their limited funds while they learn and look forward to better times. Lots of us! Lots of you!

So I haven’t an ounce of pity nor a second of patience for a government and duly elected government officials who say they cannot cut back on spending. I say, “Cut Back and let it Shut Down, too!”.

I share your same sentiments completely. We are still making it, but had to go through some drastic changes after an injury early last year erased one of my good paying positions because I was not able to walk. My other job provides less than a half of what I was earning, but never took a Gov’t handout. With cuts in my household and sticking to a budget, we are making it. When food prices go completely through the roof, I’ve got enough stored to keep us going. It’s called planning for the worst. Government does not have a clue.

I stopped reading at “Tax cuts do not blah blah blah”

You are truly a moron. I never cease to be amazed at the stupidity of liberals. Especially your fuhrer Obama. I would love to see the college transcripts he will not release.

Even if we only reduced taxes on the rich it would create jobs. It is a simple concept. Poor smucks like yourself don’t contribute to the economy because you get money from the government. Nothing is produced. The “rich”, or those your fuhrer defines as making more than $50,000, invest in businesses, they in turn expand and produce. Next, they must hire to accomodate the expansion. This allows me to buy gas to power my suv, buy weapons, and go to Hooters on Wednesday night.

History has shown that the more people are taxed the worse the economy gets (USSR, California, Japan, Germany in the 1930′s). Please buy a Hooked On Phonics that has a history cassette.

Give a $00 tax break to someone like the David Koch and it goes in the bank, give it in the form of unemployment insurance or food stamps it is spent, circulating in the economy.

“A study by Moody’s Analytics recently found that every dollar spent by the government on benefits for the unemployed produces an overall return of $1.61 for the economy.”

It is a simple matter of cutting all programs not allowed by the Constitution of the United States and get rid of all the progressive additions over the last 100 years. The Federal government is supposed to be like a flee collar on a dog. It is supposed to take care of any fleas that try to get in. The states take care of all the internal stuff like getting rid of the worms and germs and feeding the body. The President of the country is the Commander of all the military……controls the flea collar, and we have a Commander that loves fleas and has no collar training. Frankly the only person that should hold the office of President should be ex-military because that is what that office is.

Of course, polling shows that real americans, not the foolish AStro-turf led tea party, do not care about spending, they care about jobs. For jobs there needs to be a cash flow, there needs to be spending. Rand Paul and the rest of the of them are cutting taxes on the wealthy, while cutting job creating programs. Also, looks at Moodys research, tax cuts do not create jobs and help the economy, spending on the working and middle class does, welfare does.

Speaker Boehner, you had better reconsider your leaning towad compromise and stick to the script given you by your real bosses. The conservative people of this country pushed you into power and if you think we were eager and effective activists for you, wait until we come to the realization you are just another RHINO and we mobilize even more energy against you. The old guard Republicans are not going to run this party this time. If they think so, they will see a 3rd party start to rear its head, and if we can’t win with you will damn sure find another way.

It makes no difference to me or many others what “tag” you place on a party, but if you fail to take the action we expect, you will suffer in the next election. 3rd party…3rd party…..3rd party….3rd party.

There hasn’t been a larger gathering of the ignorant masses since Beck had his religious rally this past August.

Go parade around in your outfits while you enable the Koch brothers and DC insiders to rape this country.

No official budget since Obama has been in office, for 2 years, the Dems were in total control, they can’t pass a budget.
And for all of those who don’t know, the Govt budget process:
      1. Presidents submit budgets on the first Monday in February to the House of Rep.

      2. The next step is the drafting of a budget resolution. The United States House Committee on the Budget and the United States Senate Committee on the Budget are responsible for drafting budget resolutions. Following the traditional calendar, by early April both committees finalize their drafts and submit it to their respective floors for consideration and adoption.

      3. A budget resolution, which is one form of a concurrent resolution, binds Congress, but is not a law, and so does not require the President’s signature. The budget resolution serves as a blueprint for the actual appropriation process, and provides Congress with some control over the appropriations process. No new spending authority, however, is provided until appropriation bills are enacted.

      4. Once both houses pass the resolution, selected Representatives and Senators negotiate a conference report to reconcile differences between the House and the Senate versions. The conference report, in order to become binding, must be approved by both the House and Senate

Now, the House has sent a bill to the Senate, over the last 2 years, no budget, just Omnibus and CRA’s. So, who’s fault is it that there is no budget? The house has lived up to the law.

The best way to overthrow a government is to bankrupt it.

Thus far, the Progressive Democrats have done everything possible to bankrupt the United States of America. The Progressives — who include our usurping resident of the White house — in the 111th Congress, when they had the majority in the House and Senate plus the White House, spent and spent and spent money that we do not have. We have borrowed and borrowed from China and Japan, been bilked by the housing fiasco, bailed out companies that should have rightly failed, and printed more money to devalue our dollar.

Everything that the Progressives do is done purposely to drain America of jobs, prosperity, and security.

Your statement about the John Birch Society makes no sense. There is nothing — NOTHING — racist about the TEA Party. Where did that come from? Progressives who had to play the “RACIST CARD.” Well, that is just incorrect. It has to do with keeping our government from being overturned.

As far as fact-free slogans, as you accuse, and policies that would kill the economy and benefit the richest, you have not used your head.

Do you not realize that all these new Obama-endorsed regulations are meant to do two things? They are meant to shutter existing businesses (by banning certain products) and fill the pockets of those already rich (GE comes to mind first).

Manufacturers have gone overseas to places like China, where labor costs are cheaper, taxes are lower. Whose fault is that? The Democrats, because they want to raise taxes on the big businesses, and businesses here have to deal with the labor unions. All this drives costs of products up, which reduces the buying power of the average American.

When Americans are not buying as much, there is less profit at stores, resulting in layoffs. That leads to less being bought from distributors, and truckers don’t have the loads they used to have. It’s a chain reaction. You figure it out for yourself.

The bottom line is, if Obama REALLY wanted to BOOST the economy, produce JOBS, create prosperity, he would tell the Congress to STOP SPENDING, CUT ENTITLEMENTS, and figure out how to let the average American family to keep as much of their hard-earned money as possible.

The government cannot create jobs. The government has NO PRODUCT. Free enterprise creates jobs. That is (or was at one time) ON THE WEBSITE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. They understand that free enterprise is the fuel that runs the engine of America’s economy.

Nothing that Obama has advocated has worked. NOTHING! So, why don’t the Democrats cross the aisle and let the Republicans have a shot at it, now that the Republicans are in the majority? Because the Progressives know that the American people would recognize without a shadow of a doubt that it’s the Progressives who are sinking America.

While I have always been grateful since I learned about what Jenny Beth and Mark were doing with th Tea Party Patriots, it really struck me today what incredible patriots they are as Jenny Beth led the rally and introduced the guest. In recognition of decades of ridiculous and out of control spending, they have sacrificed their lives to what is a full time gig to help save the country. As a serious and valid political framework, the Progressive Movement is in the last years of their relevant existence. Soon they will be reacting to budget cuts on state and federal levels in the same violent and slanderous manner as the brats in Europe, and at that point, will be even further discredited and ostracized from legitimate political circles. In the future, Jenny Beth and Mark’s spirit and determination surely are going to be written about for future generations to learn about the pivot point of how we went from a nation in decline to a nation reborn.

      @VerySeniorCitizen

“Who are you referring to when you say “OUR”/ And who is THEY?”

OUR = taxpayers, THEY = politicians. You’re welcome.

“Unfortunately the Republicans/Tea Party are trying to cut ONLY 16% of the total budget (the part of the budget which actually help the general public.”

The Republicans are not the Tea Party. This article demonstrates the huge rift, in case you missed it. Please, try to read closer.

“Are you one of the general public? ”

      Yes.

“Do you NOT understand that The Military Industrial Complex ‘cannot be touched’ (even though the Pentagon has said that Congress is spending about $78Billion on weaponry that the Pentagon doesn’t want and will never use. Why? Because it provides jobs in certain districts – Ever hear ‘earmarks’?”

And more is wasted on the un-constitutional ‘safety net’ than on the military. Cut out un-constitutional spending (social welfare) and then we can discuss military spending which does need cut. But first things first.

Also, earmarks only make up a percent of a percent of spending. Look it up.

“How about Exxon Mobile which paid ZERO in taxes AND received $43Billion in rebate? Does Exxon Mobile actually need an extra $43 Billion?”

Exxon Mobile pays taxes, guy. You can only receive a rebate on something you’ve paid into. Basic logic.

“Just those two items would save $127Billion without ever touching the money for education, medical, elderly, etc. – in other words, the regular working stiff?”

Well, let’s see. I paid for my own education, I pay for my own medical and I’m not elderly. So much for “regular working stiff”.

Education, medical and elderly have no right to demand taxpayer money, there is no constitutional power granted to the Federal government to provide for any of those items, btw.

      “Are you a working stiff?”

I’m a private citizen who makes his own way in life, not a cardboard cutout slang phrase from a 1930′s socialist poster, bub.

If the budget crisis results in shut-down of the Government who will be blamed?
Of course the wannabe tyrants will blame the government shut-down on Republicans, the House of Representatives, the Tea Party or even Donald Duck. Propaganda has no regard for the truth and the tyrants are moving ever closer to the dictator’s goal of total control of the media. The tyrant’s base and many hurt by the event will blame anyone named by the media. It takes very little truth to discredit a lie with thinking people but many sheep will accept the well publicized lie at face value.

Will the truth triumph or will the volume of propaganda prevail?

Remember how Dan Quail was demonized for misspelling a word, but Obama gets a free pass for saying there are 57 states. What an excellent example of the power of propaganda.

The wannabe tyrants and their cronies publicize lies, half-truths and the irrelevant to avoid a discussion of the real issues and advance the cause of tyranny.
When the premise is false the only arguments that can be used are fear mongering, emotion, sarcasm, ridicule, attacking the messenger and misrepresentation of the facts (lying). Those who expect to reap huge profits from our misery caused by tyranny are experts at these tactics.
The only relevant issue is freedom or tyranny!!!! http://commonsense21c.com/

@encinom – Where the heck are you going to get the money to spend on the middle/lower classes, to help them out (us/me) and crate jobs ? There’s no money, unless we cut spending and start paying off the debt that both parties have created and expanded (Obama put that practice into overdrive). Something like .40+ cents of every dollar spent by the government is borrowed from other countries… At some point those countries are going to call those debts due.

Another interesting point, 4 to 7 percent of the population pays over 60 percent of the tax bill. Yet you want to tax them even more. How much is enough with you folks ? Check out what happens in places like California, New York City, Illinois, New Jersey when taxes keep rising, people move out of those cities/states and they end up collecting less taxes and have even less to spend. One of the great things about this country, you don’t like something in one state, you can move to another.

Michale Moore, in his own words, says abut 400 ‘rich’ people and companies are sitting on $2-Trillion dollars. Liberals and Progressives say they want that money, because the rich don’t deserve it and they (liberals/progressives) can do more with it. $2-Trillion is a drop in the bucket compared to our $14-Trillion dollar debt and Trillion+ Dollar budgets.

Talk about raping this country… your friends are doing a great job at that. If you want to create more jobs and help out the lower/middle classes, we need to get the budgets/debts down and remove some of these restrictive policies/guidelines that are put on businesses. Untie the hands of business and you will see jobs grow.

I disagree. The Republicans in the Senate need to fight. They’re doing nothing. The Republicans in the House are also doing nothing to get the Republicans in the Senate motivated. It’s the TEA Party people being forced to do the heavy lifting again.
Look folks, the economy is collapsing. The government can release all the happy shiny economic numbers they want today to polish this turd but the reality is everyone in this country now knows someone broke, unemployed, or on the battlefield.
Every single government program must see cuts. Many must be eliminated completely. Or, we can sit around and do nothing, waiting for the whole thing to crash.

Well we know that Boehner will be up for re-election and if we have anything to say about it, I’m betting that re-election won’t be a word in his vocabulary for long. Instead, he will be telling himself that he‘d wished that he had listened to the people and that he’d fought for the people instead of climbing into bed with his liberal friends and cronies. BYE BYE BOEHNER (sounds like the title of a hit song, if we have anything to say about it, it will be based on a true story)

      Encinom
Your obviously a product of the liberal indoctrination camp who believes in the “one pie” theory. The tea party does not “take the crumbs thrown to them” as that is what welfare is. We don’t believe we need to “demand our fair share” of anything. We just ask that you get the heck out of our kitchen and quit taxing the heck out of our ingredients so we can make our own darn pie!! If you want to sit on your butt and demand more gov’t pie then you deserve the crumbs you get. Be grateful and quit complaining.

Why am I feeling that we Conservative Republican Voters are being sold out by the GOP leaders like the Speaker of the House John Boenher ? Since the last election in November 2010 when the Republicans took back the majority in Congress, little or nothing has been accomplished to revert the democrat programs, including excessive government spending and Obamacare.
