D.C. Anti-Walmart Protesters Plan March on Developer‘s Home With ’Target’ Flyer

A group of Washington, D.C. protesters upset about the possibility of a Walmart store coming to their area is hoping to send the potential developer of the proposed store a message. So much so that they‘re planning to march to and protest at the developer’s personal residence. The group has even gone as far as to circulate the man’s home address.

The group is called Wal-Mart Free D.C. and describes itself as “a group of DC residents who have come together to say NO to Wal-Mart.” In order to make its point, a flyer on the group‘s website say it’s organizing a march to harass the potential developer — Dick Knapp of Foulger-Pratt Development (the company has yet to sign a contract with Walmar)t. The flyer sets the march for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and includes Knapp’s address.

But the address may not be the flyer’s only controversial element. Ironically, it also contains a target symbol — a similar picture to the one seen on a district map created by Sarah Palin and that’s sparked outrage from the left in the wake of the shootings in Tucson. And what‘s worrying is that the group’s symbol is connected to specific event at a private residence:

D.C. Anti Walmart Protesters Plan March on Developers Home With Target Flyer

This isn’t, however, the first time the group has protested at Knapp’s home. The group staged a similar demonstration on December 16. Video of the event shows police were present in order to maintain order. And while officers did step in to mitigate one disturbance, no major incidents were reported. The event video, posted on the site LiveLeak, shows the protesters chanting with bull horns and marching with signs as they blast Walmart and Knapp:

A similar protest from this past summer, however, raises concerns about the organization’s tactics.

Last May, a group of picketers from the SEIU showed up at the home of Bank of America executive Greg Baer. The only one home at the time of the protest, however, was Baer’s teenage son. The boy was so frightened by those shouting outside, he locked himself in the bathroom until his dad returned home (where Baer had to fight his way through the crowd) to comfort him.

Baer’s neighbor Nina Easton recounted the event for Fortune magazine, and said the group crossed the line:

Now this event would accurately be called a “protest” if it were taking place at, say, a bank or the U.S. Capitol. But when hundreds of loud and angry strangers are descending on your family, your children, and your home, a more apt description of this assemblage would be “mob.” Intimidation was the whole point of this exercise, and it worked-even on the police. A trio of officers who belatedly answered our calls confessed a fear that arrests might “incite” these trespassers. [Emphasis added]

After initial contact with a spokesperson for Wal-Mart Free DC, the group did not answer The Blaze’s questions regarding their position and the protest. Knapp also did not return our request for comment.

The Walmart, which has not been finalized, would be built north of the U.S. Capitol building near the intersection of Georgia Ave. and Missouri Ave. in the city’s fourth ward.

Is Walmart good or bad for the community?

“We are not interested in negotiating the terms of Wal-Mart’s arrival,” Wal-Mart Free DC says on its site’s “about” section. “We know the harmful impact that Wal-Mart always has, from thousands of case studies around the country, and around the world. We believe in our hearts, and in our minds, that DC must continue to be Wal-Mart Free.”

Despite claims that Walmart destroys communities, however, the group cites no specific studies or examples. And the group spokesperson did not respond to a request for such material.

An official website from Walmart set up to inform the community takes an understandably different position. It touts the job opportunities as well as the economic development the stores can bring to an area.

“Bringing Walmart to Washington, D.C. would increase tax revenues for the city and offer residents the affordable prices and job opportunities that come with each new store,” the website Walmartwashingtondc.com says.

At least one city official agrees. D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. (D-Ward 5) has been on the D.C. Council since 2007 and became chairman of the economic development committee this month. In an interview with the Washington Post on Monday, he explained why he supports a Walmart coming to his district (the retail chain is proposing four total throughout the D.C. metro area).

Thomas believes a single Walmart-anchored development could bring up to 1,200 jobs, and says the idea of bringing the retailer into D.C. makes sense.

“I think I’m most supportive because I think it represents a total private investment of a corporation coming here,” he told the Post. “Here‘s an opportunity where we’re taking no city dollars and trying to create industry.”

And according to videos posted on the Walmartwashingtondc.com site, there D.C. residents who believe the same thing:

Still, there are those who don’t. And a number of them will be at Dick Knapp’s house on Thursday.

One wonders about the ramifications of coming out to sit on the porch with a 12 gauge while the leaders pontificated to the mob. Not brandishing, maybe just polishing while pointed in a safe direction. Wouldn’t that be interesting in someplace with a “castle” law? Somehow I doubt that DC has one.

Shotgun shells loaded with rock salt instead of shot have been effective on trespassers for decades. I’ve heard dried soybeans are good as well. Non-lethal and stings like heck. And it would be trespassing if they came on your property, you went out, asked them to leave and they didn’t. Of course I realize it is D.C. and that wouldn’t wash there like it will where I live. Still, it would be worth it to me to sit in jail for a few months just to to have the satisfaction of watching them scatter.

Good idea, except the People‘s Republic of DC dosen’t allow firearms for self defense.

He could take a page out of union protesters in Europe and use a Molotov cocktail instead. Gives a larger pattern, but you lose a little in range.

P.S. To all who are commenting about Walmart. This is more about union thuggery at a private individual’s house, not Walmart’s practices. I will go shopping at Walmart tomorrow to protest the idiot protesters.

If you want to see what a walmart can do for a community come my town. People come from all over to shop and the great beautiful downtown district is thriving. Union thugs are real a-holes that ruin business. My wife retired from walmart after working there for 23 years. She has a few hundred thousand dollars in wmt stock and a huge ira from her profit sharing and 401k. She just bought her retirement car…a 2011 mustang convertible. She never had to pay union dues to crooked union bosses who don’t give a damn about the people they supposedly represent. Screw unions!

When we lived in the small city of Woodland Wa, there was a “minority” of people who kept trying to block Walmart from coming in. We needed a place to shop and had to drive miles to get a good deal. The Safeway and other stores in town charged very high prices and the majority of the people got sick and tired of this handful of people trying to stop it. The mayor of Woodland was a corrupt man, having a “good ol boys” club and yes men to surround him. My husband had his job terminated because he would not go along with the corrupt mayor. This was a blessing in disguise because he did end up getting a way better job because Woodland grossly underpaid him anyhow. Woodland is what you call a “funkytown”. For a small town, it has bad drug problems with a poor police department that I think were paid off. For a small town, has it’s ghetto area. The good news is that Walmart has come in finally and is opening this next month. It produced new jobs and lots for the community of Woodland that it badly needed. I don’t care about the mom and pop stores in Woodland because they charged too much money and in my opinion, deserve to go out of business. Walmart was fantastic when Katrina happened, opening it’s doors and handing out thousands of dollars in what the public needed for free. WalMart benefits the community in many ways. People complain that things are made in China but ever single business does that. They always want to single out Walmart. The minority and the good ol boys don’t rule in Woodland anymore. I am still glad we left that slum town.

I believe that if one was to dig deep enough they would find that the driving force behind this “protest” is being driven by the unions. The other are just businesses that cannot compete. If Walmart was so bad then they would not be able to stay in business. There is a thing called competition. Can’t compete, then try to regulate and prevent the competition from coming into the area. Don’t consider making the changes needed to become competitive. As to going to these peoples homes to protest, it just shows that these people have no boundaries and are willing to go to any lengths to push their agenda.

After Bill Clinton sold them our technology! But have no fear, we will continue to think outside the box and develop smarter and smarter computers. Incidently, America when reporting its stats on education reports averages and unlike other countries we do not deprive lower achieving students from entering college. The result is a larger sample pool with more diverse grades which results in the United States’s averages to be lower than the 7 other countries you cite. But it must be noted that America‘s brightest are superior to any other country’s top students. Look at MIT for example.

The UAW came out this week demanding that foreign auto makers unionize. They set a date for this to be finalized. Just wait for the marches on this one. Wal Mart is good for any community it has ever opened in. The anti Wal Mart groups are mainly mislead, misguided, weak minded, and lied to Americans who are being used as tools by Unions and corporate hating Progressives who’s desire is to control and socialize most major business activities in the nation.

I worked for Wal Mart back in 2000 and they are a great company. I watched them come into a town in Oregon and save it from the rescission by providing jobs and hope to over 200 people in the community. I watch as they provided products at a price people could afford.helping them keep their standard of living. Those attacking Wal Mart can never answer any question why the oppose the store without reverting to lies, distortions, and propaganda that can be traced back to anti business and pro Union groups.

Don’t you guys see the hypocrisy here? On one story many of you are complaining about buying goods from china then prop up a corporation that is leading the charge. How many of you question what happened to the America I knew? The “mom and pop” stores? They have closed many small businesses while employing minimal low wage employees. sure you get a better price and that is good but at what cost. now many communities are dependent on that store. if they closed it would utterly destroy them. Don’t you realize that Big Business/Big Banks/Big Brother are one and the same. you have been tricked into thinking it is about capitalism but it is about control. have you not heard about the DHS videos playing on the monitors at the Walmart checkout? Big Sis is smiling down telling you to watch your neighbor “If you see something say something”.

This fear and lack of any action will embolden these hate filled thugs and the people of the good neighborhood could very well experience daylight break in’s of their homes while all this mayhem ensues in the streets. I am a small business owner and it has done nothing but benefited me by having more people around my business. Besides Sam’s club is the best distributor that any small business owner could ever ask for.

@IRONMAN Not everyone who stocks shelves is unskilled. and I don’t think anyone deserves anything. you earn it. when I said minimal low wage employees it was to emphasize the fact that they are not helping to prop up a community with those kind of jobs. they can only afford to shop there furthering the cycle. I know someone who was a LT. in the army, A Ranger no less, who also had a bachelors and he stocked shelves at Walmart. Why? because that was the only available job at the time. He moved and got a better job. some people do what they have to for a time. If you live in a community that hasn’t been hurt by Walmart, Awesome good for you! But don’t look down your nose at someone and assume they are un-skilled because of there current job.

How much of this influx of Chinese goods can be attributed to the unions unsatiable appetite for over-the-top pay and out of control benefit packages? Now, we are faced with an administration that is all too happy to take over the pension liabilities of these unions that still, to this day, refuse to acknowledge that enough is enough. Also, these same unions are going over seas to organize foreign workers. Haven’t they done enough damage?

Unions have little if anything to with influx of chinese goods. the main factor was the massive deregulation of trade policy started to a small degree by Nixon then accelerated under Reagan and continued through today which allowed American corporations to move offshore and acquire/produce their goods in foreign factories. its funny reagan is the rights hero, yet this country operated under an era of general prosperity for 50-60 years during the heighth of union labor from 1920-1980 and you somehow cant make the connection between the decline of the US job market/ economy and the policies of the reagan administration. if it is indeed unions/regulations that have caused the decline as you would suggest, then why did the decline begin during a time of massive deregulation and the dismantling of the unions?

@VTDave I agree 100% but one thing you guys who are sticking up for walmart have to see is they are not always good for a community and they do not have America in their best interest. And as someone above said anti Walmart is anti American… Really? sounds like someone is drinking kollaid from Walmart. here is a story for you. A small town in north FL gets a Super Walmart and everything is great! people save about $10 – $20 on their grocery bill. not long and two of the local grocery stores close. Then a fruit stand and farmers market. Mc Donald’s BK and Taco Bell show up and (usually not far from any walmart) and the local diners start taking a big hit and before long they are closed. what is good for one Town is not good for others and if those people unite and keep them out to try and preserve what is left of their small town I say good for them. Remember Glenn Beck’s story about Mt. Vernon dying because of the mall coming in and his family trying to do something to stop the decay? same concept except without the great name WALMART.

@FIREFIGHT So should the LT have been unemployed rather than work at Walmart? I’m sure he appreciated the opportunity to have a paycheck even if it was minimum wage. Otherwise, he would have been making $0 an hour at home.

I’m not a big fan of big corporations and I only shop at Walmart occasionally, but I think the huge outrage against them is too much. Do I believe we should return manufacturing back to America? Absolutely. It‘s not Walmart’s fault that it’s cheaper to go to China. It’s our fault and our politicians fault. Ours for electing those politicians. We cannot bring back manufacturing to this country until there’s dramatic changes. Do people believe that Walmart outsources to China out of spite? No, it’s out of reasonable business financial reasons. If they could have the same or better product made right down the road, where they could have better quality control over the item and still have the same prices, they’d do it in a heart beat.

Wow, things must really be different in D.C. In my city, a developer would have to go to the Planning Commission, Planning and Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals and have at least three or four public hearing before he could even pull a building permit or arrange financing.

If the various commissions and boards turn the developer down, they either go somewhere else or abandon the project because it gets too expensive.

However, terrorizing a family in their home? I agree with the neighbor who said that it sounds like a mob.

@AmericanSoldier He was glad to have a job. I was using him as an example because Ironman implied that all stockers at walmart are unskilled. Their responsibility is to their share holders. It is not their fault that everything is made in china but given a choice between the same products manufactured here they still choose china because of greed. Capitalism is great, free market is essential. I am anti union. To paint Walmart as being as American as apple pie or to say anti-Walmart is anti- American is extreme. Just being anti-union does not make you the best choice. They pay low wages, employ illegals, poor benefits, (not that I think people are entitled to anything) I could go on and on. I have shopped there and there are benefits but I am saying they have done more harm than good or at the very least do not deserve to be spoken of as if they the cornerstone of American values. The unions protesting at peoples homes is out of line. The unions are destroying America but don’t think that shopping at walmart is a sign of patriotism. That’s insane. Oh and not one person said a THING about the homeland security thing with Napolitano asking people to spy on neighbors and report it. Is that a good American value?

Yes, these people are the lowest of the low and should be arrested and thrown in jail. It is unfortunate that these mobs can get away with this crap. Sadly though, Wal-Mart is just a Chinese convenience store selling mostly Chinese made goods. Lately I have been trying the buy US made goods, which is very difficult, so I don’t shop at wal mart. Of course Chinese products are everywhere and we must resist and demand US products. Sounds good but good luck.

If anyone get’s shot and killed within a 2 block area during any of these protests, the protestors should be arrested and blamed for inciting violence with their hateful rhetoric.

About 5 years ago we had a Wal-Mart fiasco near where I live. I will make it as short as possible…
Wal-Mart found a place to build across the road from a Lowe’s. Half of the property they would need was a privately owned mobile home park. The local tree-hugging marxists went from one trailer to the next telling the people they could get mucho denero for moving expenses from Wal-Mart if they would all sign a piece of paper. Some 80 hispanic homeowners and renters in the trailer park signed the document. The document was bribery. It stated that if Wal-Mart bought the property from the owner of the park that Wal-Mart would have to pay every owner or renter $15,000 dollars for moving expenses. It was not a legally binding document but it brought the entire affair to the medias attention. Then came all the protests how Wal-Mart wants to put the poor hispanics on the streets with their new born babies, blah, blah, blah. Wal-Mart held a meeting in conjunction with County Commisioners and the local marxists organized damn near every hispanic within a 50 mile radius and of course every left wing org in the area. And where I live there is a lot of them!

The Wal-Mart reps had to be escorted out by police for fear of major violence. The county ended up condemning the trailer park to make way for the sale of the property to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart made an offer of some $12,000 to each resident in the park. When that didn’t please the marxists they started making other demands of Wal-Mart and trying to find reasons to try and tie them up in court. Meanwhile the property was sold to Wal-Mart and people that lived there had 60 says to move. Once the 60 day clock started all sorts of tricks were used by the local Marxists. The clincher was when they demanded Wal-Mart build side-walks from all directions for pedestrian traffic. Wal-Mart actually agreed to fund side-walks being built up to so many yards from the store. The Marxists kept increasing the distance until it got to apoint where they wanted Wal-Mart to build side-walks up to 1.5 miles from the store. Wal-Mart had had enough. The following week the county was informed that Wal-Mart had changed their minds. The local marxists were jubilant.

In the meantime, people were starting to move, or try to move their trailers out of the park. Since Wal-Mart was no longer developing the property they said they could not pay for the moves. Now all these poor hispanics were suddenly in a tight spot. The county had given them 60 days and close to 40 had already gone by. Now they had 20 days to move and no check from Wal-Mart. Many stories of hard times were reported for months over this ordeal, but what really pissed off many in my area was… THOSE VERY SAME LOCAL MARXISTS DIDN’T LIFT A FINGER TO HELP THE POOR HISPANICS THEY USED IN THEIR FIGHT TO DEFEAT WAL-MART. Someone at a local flea market had bumper stickers made up in Spanish that basically said… “I hate ”F“n Hippies” and were seen all over town for awhile.

@click4cheapandeasyweb I do believe in capitalism but if it governed by morality not the “how can I make the biggest profit regardless where it comes from”. If you complain about china taking American manufacturing then defend a company that buys the vast majority of its goods from there that is hypocritical. So keep propping up this this company that is encouraging you to spy on your neighbors poisoning you with Chinese products and hiring illegal aliens. So feel free, after all it is your free choice to make I choose not to. I would rather spend an extra $10 on my groceries and buy local. Your story is interesting and one thing jumped out at me you seem to be strongly against Marxism (as am I) however you are defending a company that sends BILLIONS upon BILLIONS to CHINA hate to break it to you but they are communist.
