D.C. Police to Allow Sikh Officers to Wear Full Beards and Turbans

Sikh American police officers in Washington, D.C. are now allowed to wear turbans and full beards on the job under a uniform policy change announced Wednesday.

The written change is said to be the first of its kind for a major metropolitan police force, though other law enforcement agencies have less formal arrangements, according to the Associated Press.

Under the new rules, Sikh officers are permitted to tie their beard in a knot and tuck it beneath their chin and wear a uniform-matching turban at all times unless it conflicts with duty requiring them to wear a helmet, such as when responding to a riot. The policy will also allow officers to wear other religious items such as steel bracelets around their wrists and small decorative swords under their clothing, the Washington Post reported.

“I think it’s a step forward not only for civil rights and religious freedom, I think it’s a step forward for law enforcement,” said Jasjit Singh, executive director of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Under the new policy, Sikhs won’t have to make a “false choice” between their faith and earning a living, he said.

There are no active-duty Sikh officers currently working for the D.C. police department, so the change will have minimal immediate practical implications. The department’s only Sikh officer is a reserve preparing to graduate from the police academy, according to the Post.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier called the policy a “common-sense decision” and said it‘s important for the police force to have representation from all communities across the nation’s capital.

“I have to remind myself sometimes that in my lifetime women were not allowed to ride in patrol cars along with men, and now I’m chief,” Lanier said during a news conference.

Sikhism is a monotheistic faith founded in South Asia more than 500 years ago. With more than 25 million adherents around the world, observant Sikhs do not shave their beards or cut their hair, covering their heads with turbans instead. They have sometimes faced harassment in the U.S. in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, with some mistaking them for Muslims.

According to the Post, there are about 700,000 Sikhs in the U.S., with about 25,000 of them living in the Washington metro area.

      Can they not do this already? All the cops I know wear crosses. I don’t know any who carry Bibles, but I don‘t see why they can’t as long as it is their own copy and isn’t used in their job (ie, reciting verses to those in the back of the squad car, etc).

      Many law enforcement agenies no longer allow officers, to wear crucifixes, prayer bead necklaces, angel pins and so-on. In fact, a great many law enforcement agenies have taken the uniforms away from police chaplains…..

      It is interesting how many posters, on this subject, actually think that Sikhs are Muslims. Other than their towering ignorance of religions, these folks are at risk due to their lack of knowledge.Sikhs have never been Muslims. In fact, the reason Sikhs exist as the world’s newest religion, has much to do with the invasion of northern India centuries ago. Sikhs are the kind of person you want to make friends with.

      Helpful hint: Don’t ever call a Sikh (male or female), a Muslim. HE/SHE will kill you.

      As to beards and turbans, the exception to uniform standardization has already been established in Britain. The policy was helped by the fact that Sikh officers are acknowledged to be excellent (if not superior) law enforcement officers, due in no small part based on their higher level of education. Because of this, they have their own uniform standards. The Brits figure the uniform exception is a fair trade, if it allows them to serve on the force.

      This is how the game is played, lets say a white guy named Smith wants to work in DC in the year 2032, as more and more Arabs start to move in, the whites start to move out, and in 20 years the form for a job in the PD will look like this:

      “List what Arabic you read, write or speak”
      Egyptian Arabic – read, write, speak
      Maghrebi Arabic – read, write, speak
      Mesopotamian Arabic – read, write, speak
      Levantine Arabic – read, write, speak
      Gulf Arabic – read, write, speak

      One week later after a white officer applied to work in DC, he gets a letter from the new Arab Police Chief:
      “Sorry Mr. Smith but you don’t read, write or speak Arabic”

      So basically whites need not apply, and just like in Deerborn as they gain more control they will start to build more Mosques in DC

      How much do you want to bet in 20 years or less Cathy Lanier, like Jimmy Carter and the Kennedys, will move out and into one of the few white neighborhood’s left.

      An amazingly refreshing idiot idea… we need to create a big new force to hire Sikhs. Actually there are not Sikhs officers. So why not to create new conflicts in our country? Cathy found it!!! Now, with the future Sikhs male officers, but what with females? If is okay turbans for men… what for women? We are going to see officers with long, long, long hair, mustaches and bears because good Sikhs do not cut their hair. I suppose they are going to allow similar new rules for ladies…and bet what is the next thing we are going to accept? Muslims rules!!! so the next stupidity will be… why not a burka, a veil, a scarf perfectly hiding the hair… This is insane! We are going nuts! Where have we lost our common sense? The Brits have been there with Sikhs long before we began to address the subject. I‘m not silly enough to assume that the English are always wrong simply because we split with ’em 2+ centuries ago.

For the record, I never called you ignorant as I generally let folks rise on their own merits or sink based on their deficiencies. If you’re unable to distiguish beteen a Muslim and Sikh, it does make one wonder.

      First let me say I’m a foreigner, but when I first came to America 40 years ago I didn’t shove Portuguese culture/heritage down Americans throats, when I go to Brasil or Portugal people there call me a “foreigner” since I don’t speak Portuguese that good. I speak, read, and write the King’s English !

      Some cities in America they only speak Spanish like “North Havana” – Miami
      I spent over 10 years in Jackson Heights, Queens what a toilet of diversity, and the smell from you people, ahhh I get nauseated just thinking about it, and guess what no one spoke or wrote any English.
      On 9/11 everyone was shocked, not me I just looked at the TV and said “yeah that’s about right” cause thats what you people do, your not here to be part of America your here to tear apart America !

      About the Middle East, I was there for 6 months not 6 years.

      In 1997 Cincinnati Police Department went all out trying to hire Black Officers, Cincinnati at that time had about 1000 officers on the Department and only 25 Black Officers.

      In fact out of 67 Law Enforcement Agencies in Hamilton County, Only Cincinnati Police and Hamilton County Sheriffs Office had Blacks working for there Agencies. Hamilton County only having one Black Deputy Sheriff out of more then 700 Deputies.

      The requirements at the time where…..

      21 years of age or older
      High School Diploma or GED
      No Felonies or Crimes of Morel Turpitude
      Steady Work History
      Must pass Civil Service Exam
      Physical Agility Test

      Cincinnati Police made a exhaustive nation wide search for Black candidates. Only to come up empty handed. The problem wasn’t comming up with qualified Blacks that would make good police officers. The problem was the Civil Service Exam, it seems that most Blacks did not want to take Exam.

      Yes, the Sikh’s are very good people. I work with a gal who is Sikh. The reason they dress the way they do and why they all seem to have the same last names (Singh, Patel) is because of their belief in equality; that everyone is the same and no one should stand out from the others (where have I heard that before?). They are peaceful. But since their dress and appearance is so close to the Islamist, I suspect this is a way to condition Americans to believing that Islam is OK. See, those people dress like that and they’re OK, they’re not trying to kill the USA…it’s assimilation…so to speak.

      Most people trust the police. If you allow the police to wear turbans, then you are also in a subtle way getting people to trust Muslims. We are being desensitized to the sight of turbans/Muslims. Muslims don’t want to assimilate into our society, but we have to assimilate to THEM!

      A little known fact about Hindu’s and Muslims; over 250 years ago the Brits invaded and conquered that area. The first thing the Brits always do is “divide and conquer”. They divvied the peoples along the Sindhu River into two groups. To the West were to be Muslims and to the East were to be Sindhu’s. Since the Brits didn’t like the name “sin”, being religious, they changed Sindhu to Hindu.

      That entire Country used to be one until the Brits took it over and separated it.

    I think it is less to do with PC and more to do with giving in to outside groups, us losing more and more and more. We are far too left to giving in to meeting the demands (requests) of other nationalities. Uniform means everyone is uniform…wearing the same thing so we know who they are.

    The U.S. Army was doing this when I joined in the ’70s. There was a Sikh in the training company next door to ours and he had a rather thin and short beard, and an obviously issued OD green turbin. Of course this was right after Carter assumed office.

      Had seen a couple Sikhs assigned to the 10th SFG at Ft. Devens, Mass back in the mid-‘70’s. Can’t attest to their work ethic or ethos as I never witnessed them in any training exercises or had any communications with them… but it WAS a strange sight to behold. I can’t quite remember whether they were wearing the old Olive Drab Jungled style fatigues or the OD starchies at GRP, but I DO remember the OD turbins and beards.

    Of course, but display the cross or ten commandments anywhere and you will be burned at the stake, sued, banished to a remote island and shunned for life. This country has lost it’s friggin mind.

      Hmm, no, no you won’t. You are free to wear a cross under your shirt. I am sure that D.C. allows observant Jews to wear Kippot. The British Raj used to allow the Sikhs to wear their beards and turbans while in the Army. I happen to know there are a number of observant Sikhs in the D.C. area, Hindus, too. I see nothing wrong with allowing them to hold a job and maintain their faith. The problem with a lot of “Christians” is that they want the freedom to practice their religion right up to “evangelizing” other people, which usually means those other people are entitled to express their faith as long as it’s “Christian” and if not, they’ll happily impose theirs on you. I have a small icon on my desk and a Rosary blessed by the Pope in my desk drawer. I used to keep holy cards taped next to my blotter. I did it for years and no one ever said anything. Well, one lady did, she was a “Good Christian” and tried to use my faith as grounds for siding with her against my school principal and fellow teachers. If you are quiet about it, you can display your faith at work. You only get in trouble when you make yourself obnoxious to those around you.

      Wrong. Try displaying a cross or the ten commandments in any government building, it will be taken down and you will be threatned with dismal if you do not comply. Your cross has to be under your shirt? I would love for someone like you tell me that to my face.Their turbin is an offense to me… I have a relative who died on 911 and their turbin is a symbol that spits in my face. Don’t tell me I have to accept their faith, while society at large spits in mine.

      There is a difference between government endorsement of religion and a private citizen (even if employed by the state) displaying the articles of their faith.

      KEITHOLBERDINK — the turban is not exclusive to Islam, but rather something worn by all faiths throughout Central Asia, Middle East, and East Africa. Christians were turbans too.

    If your religious beliefs interfere with a job, don’t get the job. The idea of a dress code for police is that they can instantly, even from a distance be recognized as police. These people will cause doubt and confusion just by their appearance. The PC police strike again…no pun intended.

      According to an internet website, the London police have allowed Sikhs in turbans to serve since 1969. And Sikhs have been in the British police force in mulitple colonies for over 150 years. Imagine that.
