DADT Repeal Might Have Hit a Roadblock

Democrats were hopeful that a vote on repealing the military’s controversial ban on gays serving openly in the military would come today. But a just-released video of a key Republican ally that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was relying on shows that the bill might not break through a Republican filibuster because of procedural decisions by Reid.

A supporter of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) spoke out against Reid’s decision not to bring a $726 billion defense spending bill to the floor and allow open debate on its amendments. Senate Democrats have attached a repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law to that defense bill.

Earlier today, Collins explained her frustration:

Collins echoed her frustrations on the Senate floor:

On Monday, pop star Lady Gaga held a rally in Collins’s home state of Maine to try and pressure the Senator to vote for repeal.

UPDATE:

Fox News has released a little longer version of Collins’s Senate floor speech:

God HAS already judged Homosexual sin- If this behavior is ok today, then God needs to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah, NOT HAPPENING:

Question: “What was the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah?”

Answer: The biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah is recorded in Genesis chapters 18-19. Genesis chapter 18 records the Lord and two angels coming to speak with Abraham. The Lord informed Abraham that “the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous.” Verses 22-33 record Abraham pleading with the Lord to have mercy on Sodom and Gomorrah because Abraham’s nephew, Lot, and his family lived in Sodom.

Genesis chapter 19 records the two angels, disguised as human men, visiting Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot met the angels in the city square and urged them to stay at his house. The angels agreed. The Bible then informs us, “Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom — both young and old — surrounded the house. They called to Lot, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.’” The angels then proceed to blind all the men of Sodom and Gomorrah and urge Lot and his family to flee from the cities to escape the wrath that God was about to deliver. Lot and his family flee the city, and then “the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah — from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities…”

In light of the passage, the most common response to the question “What was the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah?” is that it was homosexuality. That is how the term “sodomy” came to be used to refer to anal sex between two men, whether consensual or forced. Clearly, homosexuality was part of why God destroyed the two cities. The men of Sodom and Gomorrah wanted to perform homosexual gang rape on the two angels (who were disguised as men). At the same time, it is not biblical to say that homosexuality was the exclusive reason why God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were definitely not exclusive in terms of the sins in which they indulged.

Ezekiel 16:49-50 declares, “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me…“ The Hebrew word translated ”detestable” refers to something that is morally disgusting and is the exact same word used in Leviticus 18:22 that refers to homosexuality as an “abomination.” Similarly, Jude 7 declares, “…Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.” So, again, while homosexuality was not the only sin in which the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah indulged, it does appear to be the primary reason for the destruction of the cities.

Those who attempt to explain away the biblical condemnations of homosexuality claim that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was inhospitality. The men of Sodom and Gomorrah were certainly being inhospitable. There is probably nothing more inhospitable than homosexual gang rape. But to say God completely destroyed two cities and all their inhabitants for being inhospitable clearly misses the point. While Sodom and Gomorrah were guilty of many other horrendous sins, homosexuality was the reason God poured fiery sulfur on the cities, completely destroying them and all of their inhabitants. To this day, the area where Sodom and Gomorrah were located remains a desolate wasteland. Sodom and Gomorrah serve as a powerful example of how God feels about sin in general, and homosexuality specifically.

I believe the senate should wait to hear what the results are from the study due out on December 1st before they vote for this. They don‘t want to wait because they know if they lose seats in November they won’t have the votes to put it through. They should also pull out all the parts of the bill that has nothing to do with what they say it is like the DREAM Act. Collins always votes they way she wants regardless of her consituents wishes or pop stars like lady gaga. That’s one thing I like about her except when she votes opposite of what I want her to. A double edge sword.

The problem I have with repealing “Don’t ask, don’t tell” is that you’ll have some of the “IN YOUR FACE” gays that will just love to rub it in and there won’t be a thing that anyone can do about it. And about Susan Collins changing her mind, Maine is the main point of entry and exit for troops going to and from both Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe something there that hasn’t been aired?????

I, too, am concerned over the “hidden agenda” in this bill. It is covering too much and like the unread (still) health care bill that was crammed down our throats, they are trying to get this passed without letting the public know each little detail in that bill. The dadt is only a part of it. The other large part that could effect AMERICA forever is giving illegals immediate legality plus incredible benefits. Don’t know about you all, but by golly jingles, we earned our spurs, so to speak. When we lived in a foreign country for almost 20 years, we followed their rules or we would have been kicked out and rightly so. We also learned their language and used it. Helllllooooo! PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY RIGHT NOW and ask them to vote NO! on these two issues….do not retract dadt and do not allow this un-American amnesty idea to pass.

Shouldn’t the military be the ones to decide? Wouldn’t the military know what will work best for the military? Once the military expresses their stance…shouldn’t the elected follow that? Such as: Gen. James Amos’ “Amos told a Senate panel on Tuesday he was concerned that unit morale could suffer. He also said the shake up could become a distraction for forces busy fighting in Afghanistan.” Just saying.

I can only wonder of all these opinions who has served and who has not. I as One that Served in the USN 1973 – 1977 I have my thoughts as there were gay’s on the ship while I served, one we called Doc our Corpsmen on board and I speak from my own experience that he could have cared less about advancing his sexual desires or ever made a pass to any other shipmates as far as I know. We were Sailors serving our Country and I respect the Man as nothing more or nothing less. And if he were to have made sexual advances or used his rank or position to intimidate I would have reported this and this would also be true today and would be dealt with as a case of harassment and dealt with through the UCMJ I would be more fearful of a Shipmate that was incompetent or derelict of his duty than A Gay

Darn it, folks here at The Blaze need to pay attention, including Seidl, Baker, Jessup and other Blaze writers. I cannot wrap my mind around so many people being fooled by such an obvious left liberal procedural trick.

This Dream Act amendment allows an illegal alien to apply to college, to receive government assistance, grants and other entitlements, and be granted American citizenship. We hard working American taxpayers foot the bill for college costs of illegal aliens, pay for college for those who have never paid a penny in taxes.

I am not willing to send illegal aliens to college on my dime. Why are you willing to do this?

As I posted in the other story today regarding the DADT vote, let’s break this down to single line item votes, as it should be.

You want to pass the defense budget fine. DADT has no effect on the actual defense budget. It should not be in here. And DREAM act? Please. This is an immigration issue, not a defense budget issue.

Lets have seperate legislation for DADT, and for DREAM act. Let these Congressmen and women vote on each issue seperately so we have record of how they stood on EACH issue! These people in Congress are too afraid to stand up and vote line-by-line, lest they be held accountable for thier votes. With multi-item bills, they can claim they were railroaded into passing certain attachments for the good of the main line items. What a joke.

Republicans are correct to filibuster this bill. Democrats are pulling a procedural trick. This trick is to attach a DADT amendment and attach this “Dream Act” amendment which is a mild form of amnesty for illegals.

If this defense budget bill passes without being brought to the floor for debate, DADT also passes and amnesty for illegals also passes. This is a procedural trick, not an open debate and vote.

Carefully read the language of the Dream Act. You will discover amnesty for illegals who enroll in college OR join our military. Trick here is illegals only need to enroll in college to be granted amnesty. Democrats included this “military” provision so this amendment could be added to our defense budget bill. This is a procedural trick.

You will note this DADT amendment is attached to draw attention away from the Dream Act amendment. This is backhanded method to introduce amnesty for illegals which is actually an overt attempt to buy Hispanic votes for Democrats.

This is an overt attempt by Democrats to pass a first bill of many bills to grant amnesty to all illegals. Our defense budget bill must be filibustered and shutdown to prevent passage of amnesty for illegals.

Collins is right but for the wrong reasons.

Pay attention. This issue is not about “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. This issue is about amnesty for illegals to buy Hispanics votes for Democrats. Do not be fooled by this left liberal procedural trick.

I agree totally. Not only does the DREAM Act make potentially hundreds of thousands of illegals magically legal by enlisting in the armed services, attending at least two full years of college (this can be paid for with tax dollars too) but they set the age ceiling at 35 years of age! How do you like them apples? Be here illegally and you can become legal on the backs of the taxpayer. Another handout courtesy of our wonderful federal government all to garner more democratic votes.

If we believe in the constitution, if we follow its content, then we must come to terms with the idea that ALL people have the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. These are Americans first, they want to serve our country and protect our liberty, even at the expense of losing theirs. Check out this site and read these letters. It will break your heart what these Americans have gone through.
It is time to put our prejudices behind us. Who are we if we can’t support all

There is no right to serve in the military. The Constitution does not exist to grant rights, it exists to limit the power of government. You have cited passages from the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution.

The Congress is empowered to set the rules for the military, in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 14.

Any gay or lesbian is allowed to pick up a weapon and defend their country TODAY. There are no restrictions on them serving in the military. The restriction is to keep your sex life out of the military and in private where it belongs. The Israeli army has never fought a war thousands of miles from home, in remote outposts in foreign lands. Not a good analogy. Unless you have served, you have no idea how social policies that work fine at home are a disaster in combat situations. To be really fair, I think we should let the military decide and vote in a referendum. Let the average soldier decide what the policy should be. They are the ones affected.

Just like having both genders in the military provides a chance for propositioning to request a relationship its an individual’s right and decision what they do in bed and so long as it is consensual God is the Judge and no one else really has any right nor need for a say otherwise. Someone says no and that‘s the end of propositioning if it isn’t then sue them for harassment. Gender preference effects combat ability as much as ice cream preference. Well! Why don’t you say what you REALLY mean MTNCLIMBERJIM? LOL LOL LOL I understand how you feel. I felt that way once upon a time. I am not telling you to get over it, because from your point of view, & mine a long time ago, it is a valid feeling. Then my very best friend in all the world, a person to whom I couldn’t be closer if we had shared a womb, (I knew she was BI, it was never an issue) introduced me to her domestic partner. That was over 20 years ago. I had to figure out within myself if my weirdness with this new woman probably seeing me in my scivvies and less, and probably checking me out & such, if the way that made me feel was worse than my life would feel without my very favorite person. The thought of losing her to my feelings over being seen by a lesbian in the altogether was crushing. It felt like I imagined it might feel if God told me He didn’t love me anymore. I decided that my wonderful friend had every right to be loved and to love someone & if that’s who she chose, & I love her unconditionally, then I don’t dictate those things. I realize the locker room and shower with strangers is different than the “spouse” of your best friend. But we were all up-front enough to be able to have a respectful discussion about it. My feelings about that changed after that discussion. Kate,(not real name) respected my feelings and said she would make sure she was never around when we were changing for the pool or anything & I began to feel like I was over-reacting, since she answered my fears so directly and without judgement on her part. Here’s the thing: when you’re at the gym, you have no idea about the sexual preferences of the larger amount of people there. You could be being checked out 100 times a day in the locker room or what have you, and have no clue that someone looking at you is gay. Do you know if your new medical doctor is gay? I mean no criticism of you. I only say all this because I came to realize that with very little exception, we are all very much alike. We all would like only a safe place to live and work, prosper and raise our families. There are exceptions, just like there are rapists, but I bet you’re not one & wouldn’t like it if women judged you as a bad guy because of other people who did wrong things who were male. I truly mean no offense. Gay people are going to be gay people and only God can judge. We have to share the planet. On my part, the 4 of us, (I’m married) get along like gangbusters! We have so much fun together it’s almost ridiculous. Over time, I just lost that feeling of weirdness. If a gay person made unwanted advances at me or leered at me in the shower room, I’d have the same reaction no matter what their gender…. buzz off you jerk!!! Same as if a man made unwanted advances, or in your case, a woman. I hope I didn’t piss you off, I’m just offering another point of view from someone who understands very well how you feel, LOL

Mt Climber – don‘t you think there are gay men in the locker room at the gym and the bathrooms at football games where you’re peeing in a trough?? They aren’t looking to jump anyone.

@ WINGEDWOLF you said “Here’s the thing: when you’re at the gym, you have no idea about the sexual preferences of the larger amount of people there. You could be being checked out 100 times a day in the locker room or what have you, and have no clue that someone looking at you is gay. Do you know if your new medical doctor is gay?”

You highlight the argument for DADT in a nutshell there. You don‘t know and DON’T want to know. It‘s much more palatable if you don’t have a clue but when you are informed that Sgt. Joe is gay, it naturally inserts some level of uncomfortable for a lot of people. I don’t think that it is “unnatural” to feel uncomfortable in a commune situation at all. I have a gay sister and three gay cousins so I do understand how they feel for the most part. But I don’t think that open homosexuality has a place in the military setting. This is just my opinion but it must have been an issue at some point within the armed services or there would have never been the DADT law.

Freelancer, LOL, My argument is that it became a moot point for me. I can‘t tell by looking at someone if they’re gay, and after so much time it began to not matter, as long as everyone acts like a respectful adult. I am not in the military and agree with those who say that it is probably the military which should make that decision. Perhaps it would be better if people weren’t open about their preferences. But then I read what Prospero writes about being pursued and harassed by a predatory superior and wonder if sexuality were in the open, mightn’t it be easier to have curtailed that harassment? (if they weren’t worried about protecting the officer from being found out as a homosexual) The military seems to protect officers over their subordinates in ALL these situations. Again, I don’t make any claim that I know the answer, only that I know many honorable gay people that I am proud to have in my life, who are respectful and sensitive to the feelings of others who don’t understand them yet, and who I would be proud to serve with. (assuming the service would have me!)

In the military the problem with sex is that it makes for attachments that could compete with military orders (like would you order your main squeeze to accept the suicide mission?) or lead to perceptions of favoritism. Once we had a really good sergeant who was shacking up with a colonel. She probably deserved all the rapid promotions she got but no one believed that sleeping with the colonel had nothing to do with it. There was no way to make it fair even though one could argue that who she slept with was nothing but her business.

I wonder what Senator Collins is angling for (earmark, committee chair…)? I absolutely guarantee this RINO is not standing on principal.

This is no time for a social experiment with the finest military machine in known history. It‘s not just a matter of what one does in one’s bedroom and that’s it. Do you allow openly flamboyant behavior? Do you allow one to wear the opposite sex uniform? Do you allow open relationships
between Men? Women?…… It is a slippery slope, one that the military is not ready for at this time.
Generals and Admirals are usually far removed from the reality of platoon level, company level interactions and what this would do to moral. Last thing we need is for this to be thrown in the
faces of young warriors in war zones without the proper amount of thought put into matter.
Serving in the Military is not a right!!! It is a privilege that can be denied for many reasons.
I have several members in my family who are gay, I love them and treat them like anyone else. However, I don’t want them to degrade (through distraction not by performance) the readiness of our military because of a leftest social experiment. A great deal more thought is needed on this issue.

As a vet I say the fair thing to do is just not let anyone talk about their personal relationships. What place do personal relationships have in any profession? I don’t see why gays need to be able to server openly. Don’t give me equal rights crap because in the Military you only have the rights the military says you have. Bedsides all that what will the gays do when they want an easy out?
