Danger Zone? Report Says 34 Warships Will Join Obama in India

An Indian news outlet has already claimed that the U.S. is spending $200 million per day for the president’s three-day trip to Mumbai, and the BBC detailed the country’s decision to strip its trees of coconuts so as to protect the president. Now, that same Indian TV station is claiming more details about additional safety measures: it says 34 U.S. warships will accompany the president and patrol the surrounding waters.

According to New Delhi TV, the ships, which include an air craft carrier, “will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday.”

The ships aren’t the only measures being taken. NDTV lists what, and who, else will be making the trip:

  • Air Force and Marine One
  • Two jets, armed with advanced communication and security systems
  • Over 40 cars which will be part of the president’s convoy
  • 13 heavy-lift aircraft with high-tech equipment,
  • Three helicopters
  • 3,000 total people including Secret Service agents, U.S. government officials, and journalists
  • 500 US security personnel
  • 800 rooms have been booked for those people
  • An interception and obstruction device
  • Sniffer dogs
  • “Rescue gadgets”

“Communications set-up, nuclear button, a fleet of limousines and majority of the White House staff will be in India accompanying the President on this three-day visit that will cover Mumbai and Delhi,” NDTV explains.

But the measures have some scratching their heads, not just because of the cost, but because of the risk those measures reveal about the trip.

On his radio show Thursday, Glenn Beck wondered aloud why the president is spending so much money to go on a seemingly needless and dangerous trip:

    34 warships sounds like your typical battle group. Since we always have a battle group present in the West Pacific / Indian Ocean region I doubt if it’s costing us much to have the group join up in the IO and to stay at anchor off the coast while the Pres. is there. I know full well we aren’t sending another 34 warships just for the Presidents excursion.

      34 is about 5 times the size of the average Carrier Strike Group. It’s about one third of the entire deployed Navy. It’s about one and a half times the amount of ships fifth fleet usually has under their command. It’s more ships than are ever underway in 7th fleet at any given time. (For those that don’t know, 5th and 7th fleets are the two that cover different portions of the Indian Ocean)

      In short, I call B.S. on the number. Not only is it unrealistic to send that many ships to one place at one time, it’s completely pointless. My guess: either the number is an estimate of ALL of the operating ships in the western pacific and indian ocean, or the real number is 3-4 ships. A 3-4 ship ESG would be a very reasonable allocation for this kind of operation.

      That photo linked is a publicity shot (and an old one). Carriers don’t cruise with near that many ships. It’s funny that picture brought up the Lincoln – that‘s the CSG I cruised with in ’08. I flew to every ship in the group at least weekly and I can tell you, it’s nowhere near that big.

      Okay, got it. My dad was on the Nimitz and Saratoga. I knew they had support ships, but I didn’t know how many. This 43 ships seems to be exaggerated even more to me now. Anyone know a more accurate cost of this trip instead of $200M/day?

      The Gold has been stolen from us back when Roosevelt or Hoover stole it all. REagan had founded the Gold Commision while he was in office to see about he viability of backing our Dollar again with gold,, only to find out, it was all gone..     What about all the Americans in this country unemployed and worried about losing their homes or feeding their families and he decides to go on a fun cruise with the Fam. I think he should wait until he’s out of office and take his trip to the Festival of Lights on his own dime. He talked about the debt he had been left with by Bush since he‘s come into office but he doesn’t care about the debt he is passing on to the American people for his Vaca to India. He is disgusting. He surely is a ONE TERM President. A 200,000 million dollars a day for 10 days unbelievable.

    The FBI has created a special section just to deal with threats to the president, which have increased 400% since Obama was elected. Does that tell you anything? He’s probably safer in Mumbai than he is in the U.S. Except for the falling coconuts, that is. Look for the ones with tiny wires protruding from the husk…these might be dangerous.

    OKAY, Chris Matthews needs to apologize AGAIN to Michele Bachmann if that 200 million a day is in fact true! He tried to make her look like an idiot for saying it was reported that it WOULD cost that much. The W.H. has NOT denied it. This is a TEN day trip and I just don’t get it. It must have been planned for some time now? Right after the elections? This is what he calls “focusing on JOBS?” Why doesn’t he stay HOME and apply that money to the deficit so we can continue the Bush tax policies? This is such a strange way to find jobs for Americans???

    I am skeptical. We don‘t have carrier strike groups to ’spare’ from their normal deployments. We do typically keep a CSG in the Indian Ocean or Gulf. I suspect this is a normal deployment of ships, and someone is looking for a headline where there is none.

    Now the rest of the 800 person entourage is excessive, but next thing you’ll know, they will be claiming the 40,000 troops in Astan are party of the entourage. Non-story.

      My guess is the huge security detail will allow for a completely secret meeting with several large business execs and US Union officials (might check to see what Soros, Stern, and/or Trumpka are doing on those days), for meetings on how to move unions forward in India. He is taking businessmen there to detemine what Indian goods we can import to the USA, and push manufacturers to unionize. This is step #1 in global redistribution, folks. It needs to be kept on the down-low because this will weaken the US economy further, devalue the dollar, and result in more jobs being sent overseas, to India.

      I know this president is a complete idiot, but there has to be something else going on here to justify such a huge, costly, unneccessary trip.

      I looked into the origins of the “festival of lights” it is basically a pegan ritual much the same as christmas, hallowe’en, valentine, easter etc.(none of which Jesus Christ taught) . The FOL origins are as follows: “some believe Diwali marks the anniversary of the marriage ceremony between Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and the Lord Vishnu, the restorer of moral order (dharma), who was later incarnated as Buddha. In Indian culture, wealth is viewed as a reward for a person who has done good deeds in a past life. This karmic understanding of wealth therefore makes Lakshmi a key figure in the Hindu faith”. I don’t believe that the “God” whom founded America would be happy that it’s leader is celebrating yet another pegan ritual! This whole thing stinks of wastefull spending and needless endangerment. I believe Glenn Beck is right about this, something is very wrong!

      jblazak…exactly…this is why my family celebrates two holidays…thanksgiving and the fourth of july…I believe if christians looked up the origins of these holidays we celebrate today…they would know that Jesus himself would not participate….having said this…I don’t believe christians are bad for celebrating holidays…just misinformed about their true meanings…and no I‘m not a jehovah’s witness….just a BELIEVER!!!!

      At $200,000,000 per day, the 3 day trip will cost us taxpayers $600,000,000!!! 2/3 of a billion dollars for a long weekend in India! I don’t know if the original estimate included all of the military costs too, I doubt it. All I heard was 3,000 people were being flown over there. This is the type of stuff that gives the US a bad name and runs us into debt.

      Obama is brilliant he is going to take 34 warships to India, and leave America subject to any kind of terror attack. $2 billion for his pleasure! Do you think he is making a fool of the USA? What a narcissistic joke he is. It‘s a most awful president we’ve ever had. Let him go by himself and whatever happens happens. Leave the Secret Service at home are Navy deployed to where they are supposed to be and not running his ass over to India for a freaking festival of lights. I can‘t wait until we’re rid of this communist president wants to destroy our country. I’ll yes he added some more destruction to our country today by printing billions more or buying our bonds. Hope God‘s hand was in Tuesday’s election to save this country.

      I call B.S. on that number of ships. That’s one third of the entire deployed Navy, and about 5 times the number of ships that are ever grouped together for a single task. It‘s more than 5th fleet normally has under it’s command at any given time IN TOTAL. Not only is it unrealistic to send that many ships to one place at one time, it’s completely pointless.

      My guess is that the real number is 3-4 ships. A 3-4 ship ESG would be a very reasonable allocation for this kind of operation, and it’s the normal amount of ships allocated for Presidential visits to the Indian Ocean.

      I just saw a headline on Drudge that the US Military is building a 1km-long, bomb-proof tunnel just for the president, so that he can visit the Ghandi Museum. The link is down at the moment, but I’m curious to see if the cost of this multi-million dollar tunnel is included in the final price tag. He’s got hundreds of security agents with him, along with India’s security services, and he can’t walk 1,000 yards? Unfreakingbelievable

      Two days ago, the American electorate told Obama to stop wasting money and what’s the first thing he does? This cost prohibitive trip is exactly what he shouldn’t be doing!
      The arrogance of the man is just astounding. He needs to get behind that desk and start figuring ways to get hard working Americans back on the job. It’s no wonder the dems are beginning to whisper about you they will run in 2012 – but it won’t matter. Come 2012 there is a Republican going to the WH.

      Why didn’t Republicans complain about this when Bush was travelling abroad, or when we had to undertake redundant spending he could spend 38% of his Presidency on Crawford Ranch. YOU ARE BEING HYPOCRITICAL when you decry only the spending of one side. Either you criticize BOTH or you are not really concerned about the spending, just that a party other than yours is doing it. This is partisanship at its worst. Bush lost $8B cash in Iraq. And no one has written a word complaining about it on the right. But official business in a country with a history of massive terrorist activities, and you want the President to fly coach. Also, the warships are on an exercise. It is not his personal fleet.       Well, I just want to point out that we ALWAYS have a carrier and her escort warships in the Indian Ocean. We never bring a carrier home from the IO until her replacement arrives to relieve her. So there might just be a little spin going on here concerning the warships Also we ALWAYS have a carrier in the Medeterrainian Sea and her escourt warships. These carrier escorts include fast attack submarines (SSN’s). So it really doesn’t cost us any more $$$ for them to get closer to Mumbai than any other location in the ocean.

      Another option: Global terrorist attacks last week the POTUS allegedly knew about, knows about another massive attack that maybe can’t be stopped, goes to the other side of the globe to escape it, with enough Naval firepower to run the business of American martial law. U.N. allowed to enforce such martial law within our borders by special executive order since “he is away and is not safe to return”, U.N. “attempts” take over of US (behind closed doors, this is actually a pre-arranged action). Jesus returns and kills the anti-christ (UN). We live happily ever after.

      This trip is nothing less than an evacuation. The next scheduled attack must be on line. If you think about it, the pres has been purposely making the WORST choices and decisions he could possibly make. Going directly against our wishes every time. Sending all our money out of the country, and shredding the economy in concert with the Fed. He’s been way too calm. Buckle your seatbelts, there is something going on, and it is not going to be pretty.
      I can’t get my head around this, without all the conspiracy theories coming to the surface. The RATS are leaving the ship. I want to see the list of who is going along on this INSANE excursion. No, I don’t need to know.
