David Axelrod: Im Not Sure Mitt Romney Would Have Made That Decision to Kill Bin Laden

AP

President Barack Obama‘s chief campaign strategist David Axelrod said Sunday he’s “not sure” if Mitt Romney would have made the same decision to take out Osama bin Laden.

Axelrod made his remarks on ABC’s “This Week” in the context of discussing Obama’s national security credentials, which have come under fire from the GOP presidential candidates hoping to unseat him.

“I think when you look at the record — ending the war in Iraq, bringing Osama bin Laden to justice, destroying the leadership of Al Qaida. I think Americans know that this president — he’s made some very tough calls,” Axelrod told George Stephanopoulos, hosting the show for the first time since Christiane Amanpour left.

“I know Mitt Romney said well, any president would have given the order on Osama bin Laden. [Former Defense Secretary] Bob Gates said it was the most courageous decision he’s seen a president make in his 30 years in Washington,” Axelrod said. “I’m not sure Mitt Romney would have made that decision, that was a very courageous decision.”

Axelrod’s remark went unchallenged by Stephanopoulos.

Romney said in December he believed any president would have given the order to kill bin Laden.

“With regards to Osama bin Laden, we’re delighted that he gave the order, take out Osama bin Laden. Any president would have done that, but this one did and that’s a good thing,“ he said on ”Fox News Sunday.”

Watch the clip below, via ABC. Axelrod’s comments about national security begin at the 6:27 mark:

If Ron Paul had of been President way back then, there would not have even been an Osama Bin Ladin in the first place!! We would not have given him backing to come to power by giving him backing. People that think we need to keep nation building, them destroying that country and paying to rebuild it again are fools! Neocons never learn, no matter how many of our boys die.

Its is what it is and we are where we are. Its what we do moving forward that counts. BHO needs to go regardless of who gets the GOP nod. Our foreign policy will be the least of our worries if BOH gets another 4 years.

Whats sad is the media and the left can say and do anything uncontested. If they are challenged, its never reported.

As for Dave Ax. He’s a joke just like the whole BHO admin. I love it how they make it sound like BHO went through BUD’s training, was dropped in Afgan in the middle of the night, stormed in Bin’s crib and took the target out. Just like when Air Force1 flew out to snipe the Somalian pirates. COME ON.

PEOPLE. He answered the phone and said “OK”. Thats IT. Give credit to our men and women in uniform who make the real sacrifices.

How the heck does this idiot know what someone else would do as president? What a joke.

      Obama didn’t make the decision!

After 9/11 Congress couldn’t decide WHAT COUNTRY to declare war upon.

Ron Paul proposed the following — everyone voted for it and Osama should have been history SOONER!

There were “political reasons” Obama was killed WHEN he was — matter of timing.
      -
      Ron Paul’s War:

Dr. Paul supports using “letters of marque and reprisal.”

These are, in effect, licenses to private parties to carry out acts of war. We used them against the Barbary pirates. Almost immediately after the attack on the World Trade Center, Dr. Paul introduced in the 107th Congress H.R. 2076, called the September 11 Marque and Reprisal Act of 2001, authorizing holders of the letters to go after bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders and seize them and their property. He also voted to give President Bush authority to use the military to go after Al Qaeda, but he has been pressing for letters of marque ever since.

Dr. Paul’s bill would have covered not only past attacks but any “planned future air piratical aggressions and depredations” against us. It would have given the president discretion to pay up to $40 billion in what were, in effect, bounties for the “capture, alive or dead, of Osama bin Laden or any other al Qaeda conspirator responsible for the act of air piracy upon the United States on September 11, 2001.”

Dr. Paul said that one thing he wanted as to avoid a trillion dollar expedition when there was a simpler, constitutional approach

I just had to comment on this, all politics and ideology aside, this is a much more complicated issue than you guys seem to realize. First off, intelligence (CIA) had to follow activity in that house for an extended period of time, OBL was not exactly walking the dog down the block. They had to develop satellite methods to verify who was in the house. Once they were relatively sure it was him, the Seals built an identical structure and began developing various plans. The Seals plan for every situation, so this takes time. Approval goes through the chain, Gates (NOT Panetta) would get approval from the President. The reason this was a courageous decision was for various reasons, As They didn’t find him hiding in a hole as was the case with Saddam. They were not 100% it was actually him, the possibility of raiding a home in Pakistan and it not be OBL is disastrous. It could be seen as an act of aggression, if he was in a nearby location he would vacate right away, losing him again. They would be flying in to Pakistan, a country that is hostile and using their air space is prohibited. Pakistan does have a sophisticated military so there is a chance they would be detected. The SEALs have no air support or ground support, they could have easily been involved in a lengthy fire fight. Plainly speaking the chances for the SEALs being killed or captured were extremely high. Much higher than typical. My husband is a SEAL, so if you want to call me names feel free.

@Sealwife – yes, ops like this are complex. That doesn’t mean they take six months to make a decision to execute; on the contrary, the intel is likely to go stale.

Axlerod’s just re-spouting the “tough call” talking point in preparation for the election, using the strawman that anyone with a shred of patriotism would have had doubts.

America – no worse friend, no better enemy. At least until the end of 2012.

LOL … rolling lol lol lol .. so funny oh and the calling of names by Paul and his supporters .. is funny too!

According to Ron Paul, in order to stop terrible oppressors like China from killing 100 million more of their own people, we need to play ping pong.

According to Ron Paul, if you intend to save the country and be credited with bringing it back to a Constitutional Republic, vote for only a few appropriation bills in 24 years, and earmark every nickel for the 14th District of Texas, that way, you are not spending money on frivolous things like the rest of the country.

According to Ron Paul, one must agree with the decision of Roe v. Wade because of the Constitutional right to privacy in the 4th amendment, but constantly proclaim you are pro-life.

According to Ron Paul, a “little bit of a difference” in foreign policy is stopping military support of Israel, since they are an illegitimate country in the first place, and that Israel is holding the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip as Hilter held the Jews in a concentration camp. Incidentally, Paul called Israel a “national socialist state” in his newsletters that he signed in 1987.

According to Ron Paul, not ruling out going third party is simply a reserve of judgement, since he is not sure yet how the primary race will pan out.

According to Ron Paul, Hamas is legitimate, and the Palestinians got ripped off, and cannot be the aggressors in the Middle East because they don’t have the power, and that

continues … from my second post…..

US support for Israel is blind.

According to Ron Paul, the war on drugs must end with the legalization of all vice laws, because vice laws take away individual freedom to do what you wish, harming no one but yourself and your property. Not once has he suggested how to deal with the domestic violence and death associated with someone supposedly just harming himself.

Sewn up in a package as the potential leader of our nation, Ron Paul offers appeasement, self-absorption, incorrect and convenient reading of the Constitution, anti-Semitism, the idea that if he’s not the nominee, America deserves another 4 years of Obama, and absolute blindness of the people hurt by rampant drug use.

Given that package, Ron Paul is not really that much different than President Obama.

Chill out CatB. I didn’t call you a name. The worst name I’ve used was “troll”, and some sarcastic swipes here and there. In retrospect, it was in poor taste, but you’re not being honest if you won’t admit that personal attacks are flying from all sides on this site. Furthermore lumping all of Ron Paul’s supporters into a group is collectivism, is it not?

Of course we know Ron Paul wouldn’t have had OBL killed, because RP and OBL often said pretty much the same thing about America. Blood is thick between those on the fringes.

Can anyone really take this guy serious? Heck yes Romney would take him out, at least I would think anyone with a right mind and even Obama for this particular situation decided to take him out. The person Axel Rod needs to needle on courage is Bill Clinton. At least I’ve heard that he himself had the chance to take out Osama bin Laden some time ago when he was President and he made the decision not to carry through with the kill.

Like making the decision to kill Bin Laden was hard from a few thousand miles away? On what planet is that a hard decision?

Obama admitted himself on national TV that he knew where Binladden was for over 10 months before striking him. I think the decision came after Osama was insulting Obama publically.

Obama’s own words in explaining the mission said they trained for months starting the summer before. Do you just choose not to remember, a liar or just accidentally jumped to a false conclusion?
