David Axelrod: ‘This Is…a Tea Party Downgrade’

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top political adviser to President Barack Obama is blaming the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating on tea party Republicans, whom he says were unwilling to compromise on how to reduce the federal debt.

Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod tells CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that the decision by the Standard & Poor’s credit agency to downgrade the U.S. from AAA to AA+ for the first time was strongly influenced by weeks of standoff between Democrats and Republicans over the debt.

Axelrod calls the action, in his words, “a tea party downgrade” and says it’s clearly on the backs of lawmakers who were willing to see the country default to get their way.

Axelrod also criticized GOP presidential candidates for not speaking up in favor of compromise.

CBS News:

Nevertheless, he argued, the Tea Party was responsible for blocking a comprehensive deal that could have prevented such a downgrade.

“We can debate the strength of the analysis that they did, the history of S&P and so on,” Axelrod told CBS’ Bob Schieffer, of Standard & Poor’s, the credit rating agency that downgraded the U.S. market from AAA to AA+ on Friday. “They made an egregious analytical error here but theirs was largely a political analysis… They want to see the kind of solution that the president has been fighting for… that will be balanced, that will include revenues, that will deal with some of our long-term issues.”

“For months, the president was saying, let’s get together, let’s compromise,” Axelrod continued. “We thought we had such an arrangement with the Speaker of the House… then he went back to his caucus; he had to yield to the most strident voices in his party. They played brinksmanship with the full faith and credit of the United States. This was the result in that.”

“The fact of the matter is that this is essentially a Tea Party downgrade,” he declared. “That clearly is on the backs of those who were willing to see the country default.”

Axelrod, currently a campaign strategist for President Obama, said the U.S. economic downgrade was “largely a political analysis” and that “there’s a broad consensus that [the U.S.] is still the safest place to invest your money.”

This argument completely ignores their own complicity in blowing our financial status and blames the downgrade of the few people who are saying “We can’t keep on this way.” Ludicrous.
It‘s like the wife who isn’t allowed to write checks in certain stores anymore blaming her husband who says “We’ll have to cut back on spending now.”

Yes. Lets blame the destruction of our country on a political organization which did not even exist two years ago. McCain & Kerry were also blaming the Tea Party this morning. Those two clowns have a combined tenure of thirty in Washington. They need look no further than a mirror to lay blame.

Wow, between Axelrod and Lurch (John Kerry) I’m astounded at the utter stupidity of our politicians. For decades congress, largely controlled by DEOMCRATS, has been spending like rich girls at college with daddy’s credit card and the tea party comes along and warns these fools about it, and they get blamed for it.

Finally, finally, in the Tea Party, someone stands up to these free spending politicians buying their constituents votes with food stamp, welfare, medicare and pork barrel handouts and Kerry and Axelrod have the audacity to blame the who mess on the messengers. Standard and Poors should have downgraded the US years ago for our reckless orgy of spending and it comes now, 6 months after the tea partiers take office and they get the blame.

This just shows exactly why we deserve an F for our credit rating. Politicians like Lurch and Axelrod don’t have a clue why we got to where we are if they blame the tea party. These guys are just pathetic. Pathetic!

The propaganda machine is running and steady blaming the Tea Party. You see, truth does not matter. The Democrats will win this round. They are doing to hammer this one like there is no tomorrow. Republicans calling for Treasury Secretary is the counter propaganda (although I would like to see the Goldman Sachs lackey go). He will not leave and Obama will not ask him. Many in America wouldn’t even know who Tim Geithner is.
They all new the downgrade was coming and they fell all over themselves trying to hang the blame around each others necks

I can’t begin to imagine living in a world where someone or something tells me what to say and I obey it without question. Does not one of them have any self respect whatsoever? Do they ever get their “talking points” memo of the day and say to themselves “hmmm….I don’t actually believe this nonsense they want me to say”? What makes these people such blind, obedient followers? Thank God I use the brain He endowed me with. I‘d rather think for myself to my own peril than to blindly follow a script for someone else’s cause. How sad these talking heads truly are. Senator McCain “…rejected Kerry’s characterization of the downgrade and instead put it on the man who never had a plan …’the failure of the president of the United States to lead.’ ”

ROSE-ELLEN….your grasp of what led to this downgrade- and indeed of basic economics- are laughable beyond words.

NO Rose-Ellen, the tea party is in no way at all responsible for this. In fact two years ago they were warning the country about the dangers of out of control spending and debt. It is more than 800 days and the democrats have yet to give us a budget. When Obama did give us a budget (I use the term in it’s loosest possible sense) he added 3.7 trillion dollars in new spending..sorry “investing” without any credible cuts. Obamacare itself adds trillions to the nation’s costs. It‘s the tea parties that have dragged Obama kicking and screaming into feigning he’s a deficit hawk. They’ve shifted the political discourse to the debt and spending- anathema to Obama. Americans should be thanking the tea parties for this.

To add insult to your injury Rose-Ellen, Fannie and Freddie are about to be downgraded also. You’ll recall that democrats like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd have stonewalled any attempts to reform those institutions? Let’s talk about revenue Rose-Ellen. You don’t raise taxes in a stalled economy. What you do is create an environment where employers want to hire and expand. More people working means more people paying taxes and more investment activity taking place. THIS isn’t theory Rose-Ellen, it’s FACT. THIS raises revenues Rose-Ellen. My God/G-d you’re pathetically stunted in your grasp of this situation Rose-Ellen.

    No “Gravitas”

Remember a couple of years ago when the “DEMOCRATS, therefore the Main Stream Media’s” WORD of the Day was Gravitas, Now that’s a word. And “Word” was Nancy’s word. Nice try Davie, but no “Gravitas” in the TEA Party theory.

This appears to now be the liberal talking point line, and will be parroted by them all….

Never mind that it was the tea party that was screaming for more cuts and that the downgrade was caused because there were not enough cuts.

While most people have their morning BM in the usual way, the lunatic-left d-cRAT socialists get their dumbest members to have theirs verbally through a stupid comment to the media.

BTW: there was no coordination between axelrod and kerry in making the identical idiotic statement about the Tea Party. The mental illness known as d-cRAT socialism affects them all equally.

@ Teaparty patriot- Don’t be so sure. Keep in mind the “journalist” scandal , which, once exposed, saw dozens of well known “respected ” media types admitting to coordinating efforts to demonize conservatives. This latest mantra will surly be on the salivating lips of every one of the Mullah Obamas’ sock puppets in the MSM. Watch for it tomorrow (Mon.) morning.

Democrats & Hitler–what do they have in common? Democrats now and Hitler before them believed that if a lie is repeated often enough the lie will soon pass as the truth.

Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Kerry, Alexrod, Hitler, Goebbels, and their ilk can lie all they want, this American is not buying their BS. And the good news? Many of you aren’t buying it either.

That’s the problem whenever you deal with the Government Officials, they all lie and tell the vast majority of people what they think they want to hear then once they have weaseled their way in they then change things around in a complete 360. I do agree with the statement “Obama now, Hitler then”. Obama wants the US to be under his control as well as the control of the other countries that he is helping…..countries that have tried to take over and ruin our country in years past and been unsuccessful as we had Presidents at the time that were for the American people rather than against them. Obama is that president who being of the Islamic heritage is against the US and will stop at nothing to destroy us. If Obama was a TRUE American he would be dong anything and everything he could to protect and repair our country bringing it back to harmony rather than destroying it.

Ohhh here we go another organized narrative.. TEA party get ready you are being set up! The ‘blame Bush’ tactic is so old and out of date the left has probably decided to make this move and begin the finger pointing at you. DO NOT get formally organized, maintain your grassroots independent status.

Now there has to be some of you out there that have “infiltrated” the left and receive emails about the next tactic they will be utilizing, if not I hope I have inspired a few of you to do so! That said if anyone has pls start sharing what you receive from those radical groups as fr as there plans of attack, new narratives etc. Expose their operations from the inside. The tactics to engage them on this new battlefield of information exist. Question is what are you prepared to do? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7jsKLXqA0g

They wake up mid- day in their government subsidized home, from their drug/alcohol induced stupor, and shuffle down to the mailbox to retrieve their welfare check. After which they make their way to the store to purchase their groceries with their food stamps. Then they make a visit to the clinic, government provided madicaid card in hand. Evening is near so they make a call to their dealer on their government provided cell phone. They make the connection, it’s getting a little chilly, so they return home and crank up the government provided heat to warm their tired bodies. Such is the life of the large percentage of the Mullahs’ base. He takes your money to buy the votes of the parasites . Welcome to Obamaville!

      MODEL82A1,
      You’re right!
Every Dem. I saw on FOX today participating in a “Fair and Balanced” debate was parroting the same message.
Those who have posted about it being straight from Saul Alinsky’s book “Rules for Radicals” are also right. It IS!
Even the class warfare bu@#*t that President Dunham esposes is from egotistical old Saul’s book.

Saul divided the citizens of this country into 3 groups. The Haves(rich),Have-a-little want more(middle class),Have Nots(poor).
Evil old Saul said,”The Haves want to keep; theHave-Nots want to get. Thermopolitically speaking they are a mass of cold ashes of resignation, but inside there are glowing embers of HOPE which can be fanned by the building of means of obtaining power.Once the fever begins the flame will follow. they have nowhere to go but up.’ Change!

Obama,Kerry,Axelrod,Hillary,ALL of them are Political RELATIVISTS. They have no truth. Their TRUTH changes to fit their needs.
And like Goebbels, they truly believe that “A lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.”

Get the book. “Rules for Radicals” A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals by Saul D. Alinsky.
Evil old Saul died in 1972. His cult of followers live on.

Wait, so it‘s the Tea Party’s fault for the downgrade even though the downgrade came about with no real debt reduction that the Tea Party people wanted. In fact, no real reduction in spending happened.

Do you think that the US got downgraded because we’re up to our eye balls in debt with no realistic solution anywhere in the foreseeable future?

We weren’t downgraded because we ended up saving $2 trillion over 10 years, we’re downgraded because that was obviously NOT ENOUGH!
