David Barton Is Today’s #1 Google Trend After Talking About Religious Freedom on ‘The Daily Show’

Conservative historian David Barton, a knowledgeable source when it comes to understanding America’s faith roots, is a frequent guest on GBTV. And today, Barton became the number one trending topic on Google. The astounding accomplishment, CNN’s Belief Blog reports, came after the historian‘s Tuesday evening appearance on Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show.”

Barton has been an advocate for the notion that Christianity was at the root of the nation’s founding and that the faith system has played a key role in shaping American history. This detail, he argues, has been removed from history books and is not discussed adequately in classrooms. His organization, WallBuilders, is focused on promoting this long-lost history and defending the nation’s Christian heritage.

Barton’s new book, “The Jefferson Lies: Exposing the Myths You’ve Always Believed About Thomas Jefferson,” delves into the issue of whether Thomas Jefferson was, indeed, secular — or religious. The popular evangelical historian tries, throughout the text, to refute the notion that he was an anti-theist politician. Recently, Barton appeared on GBTV, where he told Glenn Beck that the history of the Jefferson Bible has been twisted.

Naturally, the evangelical leader is not without his critics. On Tuesday evening, as noted, he made yet another appearance (yes, he’s been on before) on “The Daily Show,” where he discussed faith in America.

“You are prolific as always,” Stewart said, as he began his discussion with Barton. The two spent the first portion of the interview discussing misconceptions surrounding Jefferson.

“The biggest feeling — that he was an atheist or a secularist. He just wasn’t. He was a religious guy,” Barton said. “His activities, his actions, his givings, his money — now he had some comments that you could take out of context…but when you look at hundreds of his letters, you just don‘t get the sense that he’s an atheist.”

      Separation of church and state is a myth. No where in our Constitution are those words or that idea promulgated. The clause is clearly intended to keep the government from establishing a state church such as the Pilgrams fled when they left England.

      Both Stewart and Barton has no idea of what Jehovah’s Witnesses believe and by making false statements about them is disappointing. If anyone makes a statement about any group and it is false, makes the speaker look foolish.

      Exactly.. and Americans [really] aren’t buying into the BS “separation of C&S” anymore. They have researched it, just as they have researched the 2nd amendment, the 1A and the entire Bill of Rights. USA citizens are waking up to the tactics of the left…I am one of those late sleepers that woke up in 2007 to local issues then 2009 national issues.

      BTW, don’t believe these polls for Hussein. I honestly believe he is in the low 20′s(%)….

      @ GENEPAGLIARI: I argued this point at a Constitutional Law class at a local Law Enforcement Acdemy. The other student kept chanting “ seperation of church and state ” and since she had a degree in Criminal Justice, she supposed I did not know what I was talking about. I stood and challenged her saying; “ If you can find ” seperation of church and state ” in the U.S. Constitution before the end of the week on Friday, I will buy you a car – not more than $20,000 ! The classroom was real quiet. She studied all week long and could not find what her college professors had planted into her head. I accepted her apology and we are friends. Stand up America !

      I agree, too many people make uneducated statements based on what their uncle Rufus said and not on accurate knowledge of the subject at hand. I know for a fact that JW’s do go to doctors for their maladies. David Barton may know about history but not about JW’s. And Mr. Stewart; well, he is just an entertainer.

      If you watch again, David Barton after he said “Jehovah Witness”, shook his head and said “Christian Scientist” to correct himself. Stewart ran with the Jehovah Witness thing… So it was simply a mistake which Barton quickly corrected himself.

      I heard “The Mr. Barton” Speak 18 years ago – he was the 1st Human Being to ever tell me that – no where in the Constitution is their the wording “Separation of Church and State.” This man is definably anointed by God and his message is getting heard.

      Then I watched David Barton become one of Glenn favorite guest and trusted confidant.

      David Barton said Jehovah Witnesses by accident then said Creation Scientist (the ones who don’t believe in modern medicine), but Mr. Stewart kept with Jehovah Witnesses…really though it doesn’t make any difference because that is not what the focus of the conversation was about.

      Most Jehovah Witnesses don’t know what they believe either, bc I have talked in depth with a few. They have no education in theology whatsoever…just a group of people that get together in what they call a Bible study class and decide what they read and understand is truth, but they are way off base. All of the scriptures they go by are taken out of context. According to them they are chosen above all mankind.
      Barton is a thorough man and I trust his conceptions on what he says to be true.

      The most misunderstood thing about the “separation of church and state” ie the Danbury Baptist letter was that it was written to Baptists who were suffering persecution at the time by government…Baptists at the time were outcasts, Jefferson was acknowledging their persecution and suggesting the recourse in which they could worship freely…oye…how far the apple has fallen from the tree. Barton is the man to fix that…

      You’re 100% correct! There isn’t any such thing as freedom FROM religion. The Constitution clearly states that the government CAN NOT establish a government religion. David Barton is also 100% correct. Our forefathers, who brought about the United States of America, were all believers in Jesus Christ.

      When this Nation was founded 98% were Protestant Christians, 1% were Catholics, and less than 1% were atheists, theists or Jews. This was and is a Christian Nation. It was not the Buddhists, Muslims or Jews who instituted the greatest Government in the World, it was the Protestant Christians! It was Christian principles, values, morality, religion and charity that made this country the most prosperous and well Governed Nation in the whole history of Mankind. It was a belief in the Almighty and acknowledgement in his sovereign authority over our Nation that afforded us the most Liberty in our societies and most religious tolerance ever allowed by a body of elected Representatives. Our form of Government and our Constitution all bear inspiration from the great precepts of the Bible, wherein all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable Rights.

      Some one needs to tell that Jack Ass, Reverend Jim Wallace Obamas so called spiritual advisor. That less than 30 years ago Public Law 97-280 was passed by both the House and the Senate declaring 1983 as the year. Of the Bible, and that the Bible is the Word of God.       Letters = a persons OWN thoughts written down for others to understand… Barton has made the time and effort to do such and thus protect others from the outright lies others are teaching, and the reason for the book , but then you do seem to have a problem with truth.

      ENCINOM(AN) I have a simple solution for you to prove yourself correct. Check your local library to see first if they have this book and if now if, or when it might be expected. Certainly wouldn’t suggest to you to purchase the thing. You don’t even have to read the whole book, but rather look for the letters or any footnotes where the letters or parts of them have been installed in regular print. Then Google each letter as listed in the footnote and simply verify word for word if the book is correct or not. Should you find a mistake, a misquote, or even an out right lie, then come back and sling all of the mud that you want. I do get the feeling that if you did this and found it to be correct we’ll never read a word of that here from you. Take the challenge if you dare, give it an hour every so often when you get the chance.

He’s studied the guy six ways to Sunday but like your group does with the constitution you twist and manipulate the text to fit your agenda. Facts are facts and because someone says that Jefferson was secular doesn’t make it true. This propaganda has been perpetuated in schools for too long and now that someone comes out with facts from Jefferson’s written word, you want to ignore the facts and run with your lies. Let me ask you something. Have you read all of Jefferson’s letters to determine that he was secular? I doubt it. Your information comes from someone else’s interpretation and without reason you take that as bible. Sad. Really sad.

      @brokenarrow You’re right. Jefferson said, in his famous “separation between church and state” letter,

      “I reciprocate your kind prayers for the protection & blessing of the common father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves & your religious association, assurances of my high respect & esteem.”

      Plus, Jefferson said CHURCH and State, not religion and State. The Constitution also does not say “religion”, it says, ESTABLISHMENT of Religion. Also, take into consideration that ALL FIFTY state constitutions make reference to God in their preamble, acknowledge that our civil and religious liberties are blessings from the Almighty, and not from men. In addition, the Northwest Ordinance, passed in 1789 by Congress, said, “And, for extending the fundamental principles of civil and religious liberty, which form the basis whereon these republics, their laws and constitutions are erected; to fix and establish those principles as the basis of all laws, constitutions, and governments, which forever hereafter shall be formed in the said territory… Religion, morality, and knowledge, BEING NECESSARY to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.”

      I’m surprised the discussion went as “well” as it did, considering that Jon Stewart was clearly trying to undermine Barton‘s view with his devil’s advocacy. I don’t like that he (Stewart) used the example of an employer who doesnt believe in health insurance having to provide health insurance for an employee who does. Thats not what the system is all about.

      Yeah…Barton really failed a simple test here, I think he was just being polite…but its simply labor law. A job description is written…you do this work I described for a “glass of sand”. Then you do the work and ask for a “pair of sunglasses” and I say sorry this was the arrangement, then you go to the government to sue and ask for help…un-freaking believable…it the slut wanted BC she should’ve gone to Vegas and studied to be a stripper or escort, not a law student at Georgetown…

      The great thing about Barton is that he’s not a pseudo-historian like most secular revisionists are. He backs up his work with strong original historical sources. Thus he doesn’t need to resort to pointless indefensible arguments like the secular revisionists do. Heck, even the Library of Congress acknowledges Christianity in America’s founding and government.

      I have come to notice that Encinom just about NEVER has anything informative or productive to offer, only bias, ignorant, asinine opinions. He spouts things without any substantial support or evidence. He thinks citing modern liberal, activist judges is somehow evidence of supporting his notion of our nation’s “secular” history. LOL. He can’t find at least five historic statements, cases or instances, directly related to our nation, that backs his radical claims, he can only site closet communists, and their minions.

    I don’t believe this story at all. According to your conservative buddy at breitbart.com, John Nolte, no one watches the Daily Show and it has no impact. Therefore It is impossible that so many people googled David Barton after his appearance on the Daily Show.

    Either Nolte is an idiot or someone is lying.

It‘s quite possible and probable that Nolte is correct in what he said about no one watching or Jon Stewart’s show not having an impact while at the same time David Barton being number 1 in Google searches. Both claims can be verified by different sources that are not “friendly” to the conservative cause.

      I, for one, do not watch any of those “comedy” shows for a variety of reasons. So they have no impact on me but I do go on websites such as the Blaze where they have the three very interesting videos of Stewart’s show with Barton. Being a big Barton fan I watched them and then I googled him. It’s that simple. I am sure I am not the only person who did this. My situation proves that both Nolte AND Google could very easily be correct.

      So…now who is the idiot???? NIce try moron……go troll somewhere else where your idiocy will be appreciated and encouraged by other like minded idiots.

    David Barton is as much a hero of this republic IMHO as any that have worn a uniform. There are different ways to fight, and this man uses the power of prayerful knowledge of history to enlighten the hearts of those seeking truth. Truth is more powerful than bullets, and God knows we need truth today more than ever.

      hog wash. he is an amateur historian. He himself is taking Jefferson out of context on the topic of belief in the supernatural. Barton is obviously a biased investigator. This is why he is not a professional historian. If you do your own research on the internet you will find a lot of contention to Barton’s conclusions. But believers do not like critical thinking. I remember seeing Barton on Glenn Beck trying to proclaim that Washington was highly religious because in one of his letters he used biblical axioms to lay down his ideals of the american future. This is like a typical ignorant christian taking a totally erroneous position on Einstein believing in God after he said:

      “God doesn’t play dice.” Einstein also said, “I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the kind that we experience in ourselves. Neither can I nor would I want to conceive of an individual that survives his physical death; let feeble souls, from fear or absurd egoism, cherish such thoughts.“ Just as Jefferson said ”Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.” and “And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.       Oh, and since I was bored, I checked the other cesium “quote”. Jeffferson did, in fact, say that Christianity was not the basis of common law – in ENGLAND. He maintained that common law (as opposed to written law) originated before Christianity.

      He went on to point out that Jewish law (i.e. – Leviticus) was the basis for common law . . .in ENGLAND.

      @Phrogdriver So your research efforts corroborates my view and that of many historians that Jefferson’s view on common law of “English” people does not refer to Christian perspective but is rather Jewish Indeed! There is a lot here to debate based on that alone! Jewish perspective on god can be quite quite different than Christian perspective and can include an agnostic or pantheistic view, both categorizable under atheism or judaism. Judaism does not require faith in god! (check ole wikipedia on judaism if you disagree http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_principles_of_faith I knew this before wiki existed) If I am to recognize Jesus , I recognize him as the Rabbi and not the savior proclaimed by the gospels. It is likely this was Jefferson’s view as well. The Separative/anti-semetic foundations of christiantiy are even evident in the new testament..It is in Roman 3:31 and mathew 5:17 where Jesus inferred that Jewish laws and traditions shall not be abandoned. Yet here’s the Christians , changed the length of weekely sabbath time and day, ignored the passover and remembrance of slavery, stopped abiding by kosher law, and created other mysterious ways to separate from Jews..(didn’t work out well for us) Abandoning Judaism was never shown to be something Jesus wanted to happen! A new covenant does not mean start a new religion! Jefferson likely embraced the views of Jesus the rabbi, not the supernatural magic christian Jesus that Barton wishes he did.

      No, I chose Cesium as homage to the ingenuity of DNA isolation which as you know, led to very weighty evidence in favor of evolution (to the chagrin of the “wishful thinkers.” I mean faithful) But, you could also say I found the use of Cesium as an atomic time keeper interesting. The only comment I can make about your example on climate change science is that I agree with you 100%, but history evidence and the chaos of weather are pretty dissimilar. I would certainly not place myself in the field of weather science because I’d have to be biased just so I could feed my family… climate researchers are in the fields where experimentation is least tractable. Particularly due to the fact that human lifespan along with the inception of science inquiry(a blip in our existence) and geologic time do not mix.. Every other field of science extrapolates evidence by their ability to manipulate a system.. I have never seen anyone start, or stop a tornado or a hurricane.. so until they do that in a timely manner or collect weather patterns with modern equipment for 10,000 years, I cannot fully respect that area of science despite their peer review processes. medical, physics, or history is much more tractable and presents a lot more evidence that you can either see, or detect. For a climate scientist to say anything about the impact of greenhouse gasses in less than a 100 year perioed.. I need 10,000 year control

    I have to give kudos to Jon for having him on and not just bashing him the whole time. That is what true debate looks like. An honest, FAIR, look at both sides. I appreciated with what Jon had to say on the contraception issue. HOWEVER, it is my understanding that Catholic organizations aren’t allowed to hire only Catholics in their hospitals. I could be wrong but I thought you had to be an equal opportunity employer. I know the rules for tax exempt employers are different though. But, if I’m right and they are forced to hire and not discriminate based on religion then they have no choice but to hire non-Catholics and therefore are then being forced to pay for contraception to non-Catholics that they are being forced to hire. If it’s a willing choice then Jon brings up a good point about the whole thing, that I hadn’t considered. But again, if they are not allowed to hire only Catholics then you can’t use that arguement because they have no choice but to “play the game” and hire into “the evil” as he puts it.

      Correct. Title VII of the 1964 civil rights act prohibits employers from discriminating based on religion, and in case that somehow wasn’t clear enough precedent was set in the case of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Kamehameha School. Stewart is wrong again.

      No Stewart is correct, a Catholic hospital can not hire only catholic nurses and doctors (see Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Kamehameha School, the School was prohibited from hiring only Protestant teachers). In the end, if the Catholic Church seeks to enter the Secular world, it can not claim a special privilegde, individuals can but not inistitutions.
