Day of Shooting: Loughner Ran From Dad, Stopped by Cops

TUCSON, Ariz. (The Blaze/AP) — In the hours before the assassination attempt against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Jared Loughner went to Walmart, was pulled over for running a red light and ran from his father after an angry confrontation.

Investigators are piecing together the timeline of Loughner’s frenzied morning before the attack that killed six.

“What he did and the morning before the shooting, we’re just trying to find all that out,” said sheriff’s Capt. Chris Nanos.

Nanos wouldn’t say what Loughner bought during two trips to Walmart. The Wall Street Journal reports, however, Loghner attempted to buy ammunition at one store and was unsuccessful. He then went to another Wal-Mart and successfully purchased the bullets.

After the shopping trips, Loughner ran a red light but was let off with a warning, the Arizona Game and Fish Department said. The officer took Loughner‘s driver’s license and vehicle registration information at 7:30 a.m. but found no outstanding warrants and didn’t search the car, a late 1960s dark gray Chevy Nova.

About 8 a.m., Randy Loughner saw his son walk to one of the family’s vehicles and take a black bag out of the trunk.

“The father went out and said, ‘What’s that?’ and he mumbled something and took off running,” said Sheriff Clarence Dupnik.

Randy Loughner got in his truck and chased his son, but Jared ran into the desert.

At 10:11 a.m., police say Jared Loughner showed up at a Tucson grocery store in a taxi and shot 19 people, killing a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl, among others and wounding more than a dozen.

Hours after the attack, sheriff‘s deputies swarmed the Loughners’ home and removed what they describe as evidence Loughner was targeting Giffords. Among the handwritten notes was one with the words “Die, bitch,” which authorities believe was a reference to Giffords.

Investigators with the Pima County Sheriff‘s Department previously said they found handwritten notes in Loughner’s safe reading “I planned ahead,“ ”My assassination“ and ”Giffords.” Capt. Chris Nanos said all the writings were either in an envelope or on a form letter Giffords’ office sent him in 2007 after he signed in at one of her “Congress on Your Corner” events – the same kind of gathering where the massacre occurred.

Meanwhile, the city held a tribute to victims the eve of a presidential visit.

On Tuesday night, several hundred mourners filled a Tucson church for a public Mass to remember the slain and pray for the injured. As people filed in, nine young girls sang “Amazing Grace.” The youngest victim of the attack, 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, was a member of that choir.

“I know she is singing with us tonight,” said Tucson Bishop Gerald Kicanas, who presided over the service.

President Barack Obama visits Arizona Wednesday and will honor the victims in a speech to a rattled state and nation.

In one apparent reaction to the shooting, the FBI said background checks for handgun sales jumped in Arizona following the shootings, though the agency cautioned that the number of checks doesn’t equate to the number of handguns sold.

Still, there were 263 background checks in Arizona on Monday, up from 164 for the same day a year ago – a 60 percent rise. Nationally, the increase was more modest: from 7,522 last year to 7,906 Monday, a 5 percent jump.

Loughner’s parents, silent and holed up in their home since attack, issued a statement Tuesday, expressing remorse over the shooting.

“There are no words that can possibly express how we feel,” Randy and Amy Loughner wrote in a statement handed to reporters waiting outside their house. “We wish that there were, so we could make you feel better. We don’t understand why this happened.

“We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss.”

Four days after a bullet went through Giffords’ head, she was making small movements on her own and tugging at her hospital gown, though she remained in critical condition.

“She was able to actually even feel her wounds herself,” said Dr. Peter Rhee, trauma chief at the University of Arizona.

The three-term Democrat was expected to live and has been making progress. Giffords is more alert after nurses eased her sedation. She can breathe on her own, respond to voice commands and even make small spontaneous motions.

As she improved, authorities continued their investigation of Loughner.

Sheriff’s deputies had been to the Loughner home at least once before the attack, spokesman Jason Ogan said. He didn’t know why or when the visit occurred, and said department lawyers were reviewing the paperwork and expected to release it Wednesday.

The visits were for nonviolent incidents, including a report by Jared Loughner of identity theft, a noise complaint and Amy Loughner’s claim that someone had stolen her license plate sticker, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

In addition to the new details about the hours before the shooting, interviews with those who knew Loughner or his family painted a picture of a young loner who tried to fit in.

Before everything fell apart, he went through the motions as many young men do nowadays: Living at home with his parents, working low-wage jobs at big brand stores and volunteering time doing things he liked.

None of it worked. His relationship with his parents was strained. He clashed with co-workers and police. And he couldn’t follow the rules at an animal shelter where he spent some time.

Loughner grew up on an unremarkable Tucson block of low-slung homes with palm trees and cactus gardens out front. Fittingly, it’s called Soledad Avenue – Spanish for solitude.

Solitude found Loughner, even when he tried to escape it. He had buddies but always fell out of touch, typically severing the friendship with a text message. Zach Osler was one such friend.

Loughner’s father moved into the house as a bachelor, and eventually got married, longtime next-door neighbor George Gayan said. Property records show Randy Loughner has lived there since 1977. Unlike other homes on the block, the Loughners’ is obscured by plants. It was assessed in 2010 at $137,842.

Randy Loughner apparently has not worked for years – at least outside his home.

Amy Loughner got a job with the county parks and recreation department just before Jared was born, and since at least 2002 has been the supervisor for Roy P. Drachman Agua Caliente Park on the outskirts of the city. She earns $25.70 an hour, according to Gwyn Hatcher, Pima County’s human resources director.

Associated Press writers Alicia Chang and Gillian Flaccus in Tucson, Jacques Billeaud and Bob Christie in Phoenix, Christy Lemire in Los Angeles and news researcher Julie Reed in Charlotte, N.C., contributed to this report.

    The point is….

If Mrs. Palin hadn’t used the blood libel phrase everyone would be talking about how presidential she looks.

But as a Jewish Congreswoman is fighting for her life, Mrs. Palin is accusing the media of a Blood Libel against herself , an individual. That same Congresswoman herself spoke out against Mrs. Palin’s crosshairs graphic.

Unless Mrs. Palin has been killing Chrisitian babies and using their blood to make Matzoth, there is no blood libel there.

Perhaps Mrs. Plain could have use another less ethnically sensitive phrase like “High Tech Lynching” or “Crusade” we wouldn’t be talking bout this.

Don’t blame this on music, you knuckleheads.

Millions of people listen to heavy metal–it’s just music. Your average classical composer, including many of those who wrote “sacred” music, was a coke-sniffing, sex-addict.

    Music doesn’t kill people…

I agree Patriotwoman, why would any need to know when they got married, bought a house, had the baby and her salary. that is none of anyone’s business. It does look like his father tried to stop him and find out what was in the black bag. The law enforcement in that town, should have had their eyes on the guy with his history. The sheriff should resign, he did not do his job or carry out the responstibiity of his job. He knew he had not used good judgment and that is why he started the rheteric of blaming others for what had happened, trying to cover his butt.

Does anyone else feel that including the “assessed value” of the family’s home and the hourly wage of Mrs. Loughner is more than a bit intrusive and not relevant to the story? It worries me that the media has access to or is given information like that and feels the “need” to include it.

It is becoming more and more apparent to me, as the facts are uncovered, that many, may people were well aware of this man and the danger he posed. According to his school, neighbors, friends, classmates, teachers and the Sheriff himself. You may want to ask why no help was available to his parents? Mental Health officials can only do so much. There is very little help or resources out there for the mentally ill. What little there is, there is a long wait to receive any assistance.
Someone dropped the ball on this one. How could so very many people know and nothing be done?
Senseless tragedys and killings happen all the time. Always have and always will. We need mental health facilities made “readily” available to those that have demonstrated a clear need for help.

The “blame” rhetoric must stop. The people trying to place blame on Palin, or Beck or anyone else should step back and take a long hard look at themselves. They come across as ridiculous . Beck is no more to blame for this tragedy than Jared’s great grandmother for not having an abortion so his grandmother and hence his mother would have not been born. How have we allowed people like Hillary Clinton, and Rep. Claburn to be in the positions they hold? Please pray that voters remember at election time.

The parents aren’t to blame, the gun isn’t to blame, the police aren’t to blame, Obama is not to blame. Sometimes tragedy happens and it doesn’t require congress to enact laws to spare us from future tragedies. We have sufficient laws on the books for people to understand that murder is not acceptable in our society, one more law will not be the magical combo.

I would really like to know why it was necessary to bare his parent’s financial dealings to the world. Why should we be discussing the value of their home, and their hourly wages? That it is beyond intrusive in my opinion. Mr. and Mrs. Loughner are suffering over this too. Can you imagine how broken and helpless you would feel if one of your children committed this act? My gosh, it‘s not bad enough they’re home is surrounded by life sucking vampires in reporter’s clothing, but they are being run over the wringers, how long they’ve lived there, their jobs or no jobs, even how much they earn? Talk about intrusive! Jared Loughner is the one who committed these crimes, not his parents! Camp outside the jail if you need to, but for heaven’s sake, leave these poor people to grieve and mourn. Their Jared was once a beautiful little bundle in sleeper and a blanket, he cooed and smiled at them, a sunny faced little boy, who gave them hugs, and giggled; they’ve lost all their hope for him forever. These poor parents, like all the people who were wounded or killed and their families, the Loughners lost all their hopes for him, and now they must bear the cruel, invasive scrutiny of the bloodthirsty press. The Loughners have my heartfelt sympathy, as do all the people affected by this tradgedy. These poor people.

      @Lloyd Drako
I am a parent, many times over. None of my kids have committed any crimes, knock on wood! but… weird as it is, I used to be a bail bond agent, and the thing that always tore at my heart was the parents standing in the jail with me, waiting for their child’s release, and crying–”What did I do wrong; how could I have prevented this?” I’d put myself in their shoes, and I ached for them. Fortunately, none of my bonds were for violent crimes. I don’t think I would have written them if they were.

My opinion: Jared Loughner did this. His parents didn’t, the music didn’t, a break-up with a girlfriend didn’t, radio didn’t, political discourse didn’t. Mentally ill or not the young man made choices. Jared picked up the gun, Jared pulled the trigger, Jared wounded 13, Jared killed 6. He is solely responsible. Leave the mourners to their grieving: Get out of their faces, quit treating them like fish in a dish. Let them weep, and let them heal. Media makes me plain sick, the way they feed off the misery and agony of people who just need to be left alone. Mr. and Mrs. Loughner are NOT our business.

I am not much of a lawyer, but I think they have to have cause to search. If Jared was acting normal and had no outstanding warrants it would not make sense to search. I do not want them to search me ever unless they have probable cause. I get that part. There were many things that I am sure as it gets patched together will have been a far greater oversight.

Didn’t search because there was no cause —– guess he looked normal.

If the Fish & Game officer who pulled Loughner over was trained in Behavioral Profiling (as the Israelis practice) perhaps he might have observed a micro-expression or other body language that would have given him cause to detain the shooter.

The police do not have the authority to search any car they feel the need to, nor do we want them to do this. The right to privacy for vehicles in America has actually increased in American thanks to Gant v. Arizonia where the police lost the right to search a vehicle incident to arrest based off of an exception to the 4th amendment. The short verision of the rights police have to search cars is they can only search a vehicle if they have a reasonable suspicion the vehicle contains illegal items or a weapon.

I wish the empty suite from the WH would just stay out of our state…he has nothing to offer us at such a somber time…his words always ring empty, like the vessel that he is…he should just go shoot a round or two of golf and take his wife, Eric and Janet with him!

Sheriff Dupnick has been allowing this maniac to run free in his district….for some time….bc his mother works for Pima County.

Sheriff Dupnick has been stuntin for the Loughner family for some time……allowing Jared as many free passes…..for his criminal behavior…..that corruption in law enforcement allows…….while jared’s behavior escalated……into the Massacre……w all the warning signs of a domestic Terrorist……death threats and all.

Dupnick allowed Jared Loughner to be a menace to society…….by doing nothing to get him off the streets.

His parents were very well aware their son was a Major Problem…….by fixing all his charges…..and running interference so that he would not be held accountable for his crim ok nal behavior.

Both Dupnick and loughner’s mother should be forced to resign as “employees” of PIMA COUNTY…..zbusing their positions to participate in a conspiracy for obstruction of justice.

The people of Arizona should demand a Grand Jury investigstion……into the identities of the parties who were pulling strings…..fixing cases….refusing to priceed w criminal charges when jated’s victims reported him to law enforcement authorities…..and fetermined that death threats were not a serious enough offense to arrest him…..although msking death threats using a telrohone is a federal offense…..and should have been reported to the feds by Sheriff Dupnick himself.

We don’t know if they had cause at the time. However it is clear this Dupnik is totally incompetent and needs to step down. If they had a liberal policy of turning death threats over to “Mental Health Officials” then the liberal policy is part to blame. It‘s funny how liberals cry and scream when real law enforcement enforces the law but when a political hack like this bumbling sheriff screws up they make the baseless and untrue claims that somehow it was Rush’s fault. This is beyond vulgar, it’s to the point that we have to ask; if you are a Democrat, are you qualified to be in charge of anything?

SHERIFF DUPNIK, FOR THE PUBLICS SAFETY, PLEASE STEP DOWN IMMEDIATELY!

perhaps its called reasonable doubt? How many times have you been “searched” for a traffic stop?
and if they had found a Walmart bag with a box of ammo, so what…. thats legal.

Once again we can not predict the actions of people. Should this man have been allowed to buy a weapon? Probably not, but that still doesnt mean he would not have gotten a hold of one legally or not.
Crazy people do crazy things. HE is responsible for what HE did, no one else…..
The problem with America today is that people will not take responsibility for their actions. Its always someone else’s fault.

The officers most likely did nto feel there was sufficient cause for a further search; not all traffic stops turn out to be major reasons to search each and every vehicle down to the nuts and bolts.

@JAGR1850 – Probable Cause prevented them from searching the car. Had they seen something suspicious inside the vehicle, they could’ve searched it. If this leftist lunatic had his ammo in his trunk or in a plastic bag tucked under the seat and out of eyesight, the police officer’s hands are tied. I also wonder if he was pulled over by somebody from AZ Game & Fish because that’s the agency who reported the traffic stop – had it been the police dept. don‘t you think they would’ve issued the statement on that traffic stop? I know in MY sleepy little hamlet if the cops pull you over for failure to stop, you‘re gettin’ a ticket no “Ifs, ands or buts about it‘ that’s for sure.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————Yeah just what American freedom needs, a micro expression or body language becoming probable

Had they asked to search his car, without probable cause, he could have refused and been entirely within his legal rights.
