Days Before 9/11 Anniversary, Feds Warn of Small Airplane Terror Threats

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI and Homeland Security have issued a nationwide warning about al-Qaida threats to small airplanes, just days before the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Authorities say there is no specific or credible terrorist threat for the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. But they have stepped up security nationwide as a precaution.
According to a five-page law enforcement bulletin issued Friday, as recently as early this year, al-Qaida was considering ways to attack airplanes.
The alert, issued ahead of the summer’s last busy travel weekend, said terrorists have considered renting private planes and loading them with explosives.
“Al-Qaida and its affiliates have maintained an interest in obtaining aviation training, particularly on small aircraft, and in recruiting Western individuals for training in Europe or the United States, although we do not have current, credible information or intelligence of an imminent attack being planned,” according to the bulletin obtained by The Associated Press.
The bulletin also says al-Qaida would like to use sympathetic Westerners to get flight training, then get them to become flight instructors.
Matthew Chandler, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, described the bulletin as routine.
“We shared this information with our partners to highlight the need for continued awareness and vigilance,” he said.
Aviation security is much tighter than it was a decade ago, but al-Qaida remains keenly interested in launching attacks on airplanes, believing large attacks with high body counts are more likely to grab headlines.
Threats to small airplanes are nothing new. After the 2001 attacks, the government grounded thousands of crop dusters amid fears the planes could be used in an attack.
In 2002, U.S. officials said they uncovered an al-Qaida plot to fly a small plane into a U.S. warship in the Persian Gulf. And in 2003, U.S. officials uncovered an al-Qaida plot to crash an explosives-laden small aircraft into the American consulate in Karachi, Pakistan.

I deliberate suicidal pilot could get it done, targeting aircraft that are taking off or landing. Airports of all sizes need to be extraordinarily alert. It just fries me that our government hasn’t declared out and out war against jihadists and brought the hammer down on them. American mosques continue to funnel money to Hezbollah and others. It’s hard not to see our government as facilitating our own destruction.

DHS warns all americans to be mindful and report any suspicious looking small plane. They are now wanding and patting down all small planes at airports and arifields across the nation. All will be checked, not just the small planes wearing arab garb. Afterall…DHS is and always will be PC.

Posted on September 4, 2011 at 12:24pmPeople need to start using some common sense. Any dummy could easily attack a High School football stadium with almost zero chance of getting caught. But we’re supposed to believe terrorists want to achieve the impossible and hijack another plane… really? Ten years later this has never happened. Almost all pilots now carry sidearms in the cockpit. Air marshalls are also on random flights. People are so jittery that drunk passengers acting erractically are automatically tackled by passengers. Getting through security requires a rectal exam… and TSA has not thwarted even one *supposed* threat since 9/11 despite all their enhanced security. If you were a terrorist why would you go through all this effort with basically zero chance of success when there are a zillion other easy targets (including most military bases) that are just as (if not more) effective?

Most likely with a car bomb, and a series of attackers (suicide bomber and gunmen fighting to the death).

Just a few weeks afterwards, many of the SEAL team involved in the raid (if I recall the articles right) were killed in a Chinook coptor, after being ambushed by a lone man with an RPG…coincidence?
Possible.
There is still a lot not being released, and too many questions unanswered yet to make me wonder if more is not going on — either someone selling them out or a massive accident and incompetence that the admin wants covered up.
