OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — A shooting at an east Alabama community college on Wednesday killed one woman, wounded two others and injured a child who was hit by flying glass, authorities said.
Police had a suspect though he wasn’t in custody and said the gunfire resulted from a domestic dispute.
Photos and video from the scene showed a Toyota minivan with three windows shot out in a parking lot outside a building at Southern Union Community College in Opelika. Student Quay Thomas said he heard nine shots.
“It was terrifying,” said the 17-year-old. “I wouldn’t think anything like this would happen at a college campus.”
Police said a 63-year-old woman was killed, and women ages 36 and 94 were shot. The 4-year-old hit with glass was being treated at a hospital.
The victims’ names were not immediately released. City spokeswoman Jan Gunter said officers were still trying to sort out details but believed the afternoon shooting was related to a dispute between a man and a woman.
“Preliminarily they were pretty sure they knew who the shooter was and what the problem was,” she said.
The school closed the campus for the rest of the day.

Posted on April 8, 2011 at 4:25pmI was under the impression that schools were “ GUN FREE ZONES ”.
Clearly only the law abiding follow the law.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 2:25pmEven if more guns did lead to more shootings, which it doesn’t, it would also lead to lower prison populations and welfare rolls and a less crowded and costly court system… You have to find the good in everything…

Posted on April 8, 2011 at 5:00amare stolen out of people’s homes. When you are home then keep it open or have one on you, but if you leave lock them up! Yes it is the responsible thing to do. Likewise LKETCHUM didn’t mention anything about concealed carry.
If you leave your guns at home when you go out it makes NO DIFFERENCE on your ability to save people, whether they are locked in a safe or not.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 9:59amIt always seems to happen within these so called “gun free zones”, which only proves again and again that gun laws only apply to the law abiding.
It is so sad that it is always the most innocent that are being killed and injured by criminals, and our focus needs to be on the criminals.
One thing I will add is that I despise gun laws, but I love responsibility and common sense and since most gun involved crimes include stolen weapons, I want to encourage all responsible gun owners to get a certified gun safe and bolt it to the frame of the house. It is the responsible thing to do. Lock up all guns and ammunition and be mindful of your neighbors and if your home is ever broken into, at least you will have done all you could do to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

Posted on April 6, 2011 at 9:27pmMaybe if the campus cops were a little more on the ball, instead of arresting teachers for closing some idiots laptop, they would have time to address real perps on campus.

Posted on April 6, 2011 at 9:02pmI went here for a few classes while attending Auburn University. It is very sad anytime it happens, but given I had classes in the building pictured make it a little closer to home. God be with the families suffering loss. Hopefully anyone thinking of doing anything remotely like this will realize it is an act of lunacy and will re-consider. There are other ways to deal with problems. It would be great of the people posting to leave politics out of it and show some respect.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 10:00amSchools are “gun free zones” and that is the problem.. If one person in the parking lot had a gun, or the person who did the shooting Thought there was a chance someone there would have a gun, it would not have happened there. These gun men are cowards and do not want a shoot out just to have their way..most trained CCW permit holders would not have let the 2nd shot get off. Arizona is headed in the right direction and I am glad I moved here.

Report Post »Welcome to AZ. Your right training is everything. Do you remember during the Az shooting the young man who after hearing the gun fire came running towards the incident with his weapon drawn and saw a person standing holding a weapon but he noticed it was lock open and out of ammo. His training taught him and gave him the instinct to secure the one with the weapon without firing. He apprehended the person until people told him that he was not the shooter. When I heard this story and saw his interview I was impressed, not only for his courage, but for his coolness in such a dire situation. Training dose save life.
