Deaf, Mute Friends Stabbed at Bar After Sign Language Mistaken for Gang Signs

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP/THE BLAZE) — Police say two hearing-impaired South Florida men were stabbed at a bar when their sign language was mistaken for gang signs.
Court records show that 45-year-old Barbara Lee and 19-year-old Marco Ibanez are facing aggravated battery charges in the Saturday night attack in Hallandale Beach.
Below is a picture of Alfred Stewart, 31. According to the New York Daily News, Stewart, who is deaf, was parting with his friends “at a bar when a gang-banger mistook their sign language for gang signs.”
Lee and Ibanez were jailed Monday and records did not show an attorney for either of them.
Police say the men were using sign language to communicate when Lee allegedly confronted them with complaints they were flashing gang signs.
Police say Lee left and returned with Ibanez and a juvenile and attacked the men, a bystander and a bar bouncer. Police say none of their injuries are life-threatening.

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 9:08amI am hearing impaired. I do use sign language from time to time, but mostly I lip read. My signing has never been mistaken for “gang signs”. This just shows the ignorance of some people. ASL doesn’t even look like gang signs, especially if two deaf people are signing to each other because we shorten the hand movements, it saves time.
These imbeciles should have their auditory nerves snipped and forced to spend the rest of their miserable lives in jail, sitting in silence.

Your solution certainly has the ring of poetic justice. However, for the sake of the country I think sterilization as a voluntary condition of parole is the way to treat criminals. You won’t be forced to be sterilized, however you won’t be eligible for parole either. It’s purely voluntary, after all, no one is entitled to parole; your original sentence carries the legal weight.
I think in centuries past, N’er-do-well criminals were killed before they had a chance to do *too* much breeding (either by other criminals or by the gallows- before the Supreme Court ruled death sentences for anything other than murder ‘cruel and unusual’)
Now they are outbreeding the good people and overly stretching our good will.
