Deaf Woman Behind Viral Video Describes Hearing Her Voice for the First Time

One of the most inspiring stories we’ve had the opportunity to cover on the Blaze surrounds 29-year-old Sarah Churman. Earlier this month, we brought you incredible video of the young woman, who was born deaf, hearing her voice for the first time.

On Thursday, Fox News Gretchen Carlson interviewed her about a special hearing implant that has revolutionized her life. Showing how life-changing modern medical technology has become, this medical marvel is now making it possible for Churman to experience hearing for the first time. When asked to describe what the process has been like, she said:

“Everything before was jumbled or muffled…but once they turned the implant on it’s just absolute clarity…You can hear all the little noises you never heard before.

I’ve been not hearing for so long — to go to this, it was just — an absolute difference. I don’t know how to explain it…before everything was just one big jumbled sound.”

Particularly warming is the idea that she is now able to hear her two small children’s distinct voices. “It was overwhelming,” she said. ”Getting to hear their little voices like that — that was worth it right there.”

Churman’s surgery cost $30,000 — a lump sum of money that she said her mother-in-law “stepped out in faith” (in fact, she cashed in all of her retirement savings) to give.

Watch Carlson’s interview with her, below:

And here‘s the original video showing Churman’s emotional reaction to hearing her voice for the first time:

Churman has been making her media rounds. She also appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” earlier this month, where she again addressed this inspirational tale:

If you’re interested in learning more, Churman is answering questions and blogging about her experiences. Inspirational, indeed.

I think that its just wrong for her to get the implant. It was made by one of those evil corporations that are ruining this country. Michael Moore should have taken her to Cuba and their doctors would have fixed her hearing. You know, they have the best health care in the western hemisphere.

Grandma has to cash in her retirement for it because the insurance company didn’t think she needed to hear anything.

      That‘s a republican’s favorite part.

      To Scienceisnotevil:
You are another display of ignorance. If you logically trace back the steps of what God can and HAS done, He touches and affects people and our very minds that “create” are because of the “Creator”. it’s easy to see the hand of God in everything good that we do, except for folks like you that find any excuse and reason to take God “out” of the picture.

Scientists are people and PEOPLE are created by God! Do the math. Oh, I forget… folks like you have your own math that adds up to whatever you want it to be.

I don’t understand why some idiots have to try to turn a beautiful story-experience into something else. It sounds like pure jealousy to me. Like, uh, maybe they didn’t get the love from their own mother-in-law when they whined about the motorcycle that they really really really had to have, but was refused. *sigh* get a life!

… and the “Flea Party” would say: “It was society that allowed the engineers that developed these implants to prosper and become educated to the degree that they could be developed. The corporate greed and capitalism that extorts a cost of $30K must be stopped! The need of the deaf far outweighs the success given, by society, to the developers.”

Capitalism works, and is inherently way more compassionate than the injustice imparted by wealth redistribution, so-called “social justice”, and favoritism of collectivism over individual rights.

Have people even stopped to think for even a millisecond what God’s thoughts about the deaf may be? Like maybe they are deaf so that when they live again (and people do) that therefore they will listen more intently. People who can hear, think and see are more deaf, dumb and blind than the people whom are deaf, dumb, and blind.

      Posted on October 14, 2011 at 8:48am

Therefore in essence, it could be viewed as God gave this deaf woman her fruit in the beginning, and she acquired two more pieces of fruit, and as being deaf she could have been working on her fourth piece of fruit, but now men have allowed her to hear with her ears of her coat. Moreover someone has cheated her out of a piece of fruit so that they think themselves gain a piece of fruit.

And then if by chance twenty years down the road she develops a more severe case of hearing loss which can not be fixed. Then she will turn bitter, and she may bury her fruit to squander it. And she may end up with only that original fruit she had in the first place.

Nice try but I beg to differ. Our Father created perfection. Sin entered, bringing corruption to body, mind, soul and the world. Her deafness was a result of sin, not her‘s but the sin that infected God’s perfection in the Garden. Would not a good steward diligently combat the effects sin?
