‘Death Threats’: College Student Who Filmed Asian Rant Is Leaving UCLA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A student who posted an Internet video of her tirade against the Asian population at the University of California, Los Angeles, said Friday night that she is leaving the school, despite the university’s decision not to discipline her.
In a statement to the Daily Bruin campus newspaper, Alexandra Wallace said she has chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA because of what she called “the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats and being ostracized from an entire community” in the wake of the three-minute video.
“In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture,” Wallace said in the statement, her second apology of the week. “Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn’t erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action.”
Earlier Friday, university officials said they would not discipline Wallace because her video was an exercise of free speech, not hate speech, and it didn’t violate the student code of conduct.
UCLA’s vice chancellor for student affairs, Janina Montero, said in a statement that campus officials were “appalled and offended by the sentiments expressed in the video,” but it did not seek to harm or threaten a specific person or group.
In the video, Wallace said her complaints aren‘t directed at any individual and people shouldn’t take offense, but “the problem is these hordes of Asian people that UCLA accepts into our school every single year.”
She says the numbers would be fine if Asian students would “use American manners” and goes on to complain about Asians frequently talking on their mobile phones while she tries to study. At one point she mocks them with gibberish.
Wallace suggests in the video that people calling to check on the fate of Japan‘s tsunami victims go outside so they won’t freak people out if they get bad news.
Wallace took down the rant shortly after posting it Sunday, but it had already gone viral and sparked a strong reaction at UCLA, where at least 37 percent of the school’s 26,000 undergraduates are Asian, 32 percent are white, 16 percent are Hispanic and 4 percent are black.
Wallace could not be reached for further comment.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 10:45amFree speech aside, people can, do and will say stupid things in the heat of the moment. Maybe she’ll learn that actions have consequences. Maybe it will make her a better person. Maybe not.
The point is, in a civilized world, she simply would have asked the offenders to “take it outside” and then complain to the library if they continued. In a civilized world, the Asian kids who were disturbing the peace of the library would have more consideration for others studying.
The kids on the phone disturbing her study were as guilty of she is of being selfish and uncivilized. By selfish – I mean making their calls in public where others could be disturbed. They could have been considerate and made their calls from the restroom, from their dorm room, or from outside of the study area. They had every right to find out if their family was OK, but just like “Free speech” there is a time and a place.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 10:31amI agree. She apologized. Leave it and her alone. We all make mistakes and say stupid things that we later regret. We’re all human.
And as first gen Asian, I found some of her words offensive but she has freedom of speech- I don‘t have to like what she says but that’s doesn’t preclude her from her right at all! Freedom is one of the things I love about our country.
I do take issue with how SOME on the board who defended this young woman’s right to vent as she did (and rightly so), in the same breath said that Asians are rude and do not assimilate into American society. That, IMO, is a blanket statement. Not all Asians are rude. My Asian friends, family and I are not that way at all. FWIW, my English is accent-less (even though I am fluent in Chinese) and I’m well-mannered thanks to both my Chinese and American upbringing and influence.
Thank you for reading and listening to this. It was something that I felt compelled to take a stance on- both defending this girl AND Asians as well.

I do empathize with her too as I sometimes catch myself speaking my native language in front of other people who cannot understand me. It feels awkward as well hearing other people in different nationality speaking in their native tongue in front of me.

Please be respectful to our Nation, we speak English here, not Mandarin of Cantoneese, nor for that matter Mexican ( so please pay attention as well illegal immigrants from down south of our borders.), nor Korean, nor any other dialect but English, got it?
We do understand that when you call back home you may be speaking with someone who does not speak English, so please be respectful and take your call to a more secluded local where it won’t infringe upon any other peoples lives. That being said, we also recognize that doing so is not always feasible so we will try to work on our acceptance and tolerance.
Think first, if I was that other person would I like what I am about to do?

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 12:12pm@ Betterdays- I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that you were being sardonic. BUT in case you weren’t, here is MY rebuttal:
Umm… wow. I WILL remember that, thank you for schooling me… sarc/
Last I checked, I AM an American, my father, a WW II vet, and my mother both legal immigrants were Americans and loved our country, my brother who served in the Navy in the 60′s was an American. YOU may not believe that we respect America but I disagree- vehemently. Some may not but many do. Same goes for whites, blacks and latinos. (eg Obama and William Ayers to name a few).
And oh btw, as you addressed Asian friends at the start of your post, we speak English too and perfectly many times AND to my recollection. MEXICAN (which is not a language, Spanish is…) is not a part of our many dialects.
I am proud of being both Chinese and American. But please remember: my loyalties lie with America and I stand with my fellow Americans.

Posted on March 21, 2011 at 2:13amFirst of all, it should be “If I were,“ not ”If I was.” Another sign that the American educational system is failing?
Second, I would like to quote, ” . . . please be respectful and take your call to a more secluded local where it won’t infringe upon any other peoples lives.” Not every single Asian is rude in the way that she stated, nor is every single American polite: I cannot even begin to count the number of times that I’ve walked into a library, and two girls are sitting on chairs next to each other, texting their freind sitting right next to them, then proceeding to chat in person *about* the text that they just sent to each other. That would be considered secluded and not infringing on other people’s lives?
My point here is that not every single person of a nationality is rude nor polite.
How does it feel to have an Asian correct your grammar when you’re the one advocating “speak[ing] English here”?

The Regents of UC recently voted unanimously to limit Asian women acceptance rates, but you won’t read about that in the MSM. This is how the morons are weeded out of society. I’m not sure that she really hates asians. she simply attributes mannerisms to them that may or may not be true and she dislikes those traits. Well i dislike and scorn the goth or emo crowd and think they are a plague on society. i don’t hate the people. The real crime here is the “actual hate” that came back onto her in the form of threats. The propensity to react like that to every perceived slight is what is wrong with the youth in America not her passive dislike of perceived racial traits. I‘ll take a person not liking the fact that i’m an internet nerd over a death threat any day. She will live and hopefully learn but giving her that kind of hate teaches nothing but more hate.

I see a lot of cowardice like this in our country these days. Second, the woman would have been wise not to post the video she did. Live and learn sometimes hard lessons. Third, I can see where some Asian people might have been a little offended by the posting that was more of a stereotype of an entire race rather than very specific individuals. All races are rude or inconsiderate when taken on a whole. Fourth, when will people ever grow a little thicker skin and grow up and not be offended by every stupid little comment. Fifthly, when will people learn to forgive? the woman apologized. Just let it go and figure she has probably learned her lesson. Many errors throughout this situation. And finally, we need to stand up against the thought police that wanted to discipline this woman for her view and speech. Even if it wasn’t bright or wise. Otherwise, the next one being disciplined for the views might be one of us. There is my 2 cents.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 12:01pmIn an atmosphere poisoned by [the Left] with intentional class warfare, anything can become explosive. This is exactly the point, agitation [bottom up] breakdown society in order to usher in a new order. In another universe, preferably the one I grew up in, this would have been seen as someone with a silly prejudice against a particular minority and to other as a legitimate grievance. There would have been differences of opinion but nothing more. In this universe I find myself in, this becomes national incident.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 12:04pmI’m sick and tired of White people being forced to apologize for any they say deemed racist. One time I was playing poker and I called an asian girl “yoko ono” and the entire table went nuts and one guy threatened to KILL me in the parking lot. I was kicked out of the casino for one year. It‘s a amazing people threathened to kill me and I’m the one that got banned.
This multiculturual hellhole will only get worse. I’m convinced that this country will breakup along racial lines and the first to breakoff will be the Southwest including Southern California.
Say Goodbye to America as we know it.

Report Post »I couldn’t agree with you more. Wait until this country REALLY gets serious about the open borders and tries to keep all the invaders from Central and South America from coming in. The open borders crowd, who have no allegiance to anyone but themselves, will be protesting in the streets waving the flags of their HOME countries. If it was so good there, and you have such a powerful allegiance to that country, LEAVE. English needs to be made the official language of the United States and those immigrating should learn it in order to function and assimilate. No more of this push 2 for Spanish, push 3 for Swahili, etc. If your going to immigrate to another country you had better be willing and able to assimilate to that countries customs, practices, and LANGUAGE.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 12:50pmSo much for the 1st Amendment. While many dont agree with what she said she has a right in this country to say what she wants. Not to mention she has apologized to times, Id like to know who the threats are coming from? Who ants to bet they are just like the types who protested in Wis and protested about illegal immigration siding with illegals?
She should stay at UCLA in spite of the threats expose these ppl! If these ppl are so stupid to threaten her they deserve to get caught. With her giving in and surrendering they go back into the shadows and we will never know who they are. Sometimes you have to stay in fight and I think its safe to say 98% of the threats are idle threats its the 2% you have to worry about but I say call their bluff.
This is really about freedom of speech and once again the Constitution loses to those who probably would enjoy seeing it burn!

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 1:23pmShe did apoligize…. So yes I agree to forgive her BUT actions can sometimes have consequences and in this case there is no “coming back” as I would put it. I also think she should realize it is HER who needs “lessons in life” As for the phone ettiquette (sic) in the library perhaps she could have taken that to the librarian ir official of the school. As for the part of people calling on family members back in Japan after the earthquake again SHE has no senisitivity and no real understanding. Lastly I can some this up in five words POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR AT UCLA Enough said

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 1:29pmApology or not, she is white and in current society is not allowed to say things about others in regards to race and nationality or sexual orientation.. Now, if she were an Asian or a black person, nothing would have been said. It‘s the normal double standard of today’s environment. A person can say racist things about whites but a white person can’t. It’s all that PC BS!!!!!!

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 2:08pmShe acted without thinking which is not so unusual considering her age. Who is worried about consequences at 19? That said, she did apologize and more than once to her credit. Those people who reacted with personal threats and visciousness to her are the ones who should be apologizing as well. Their reaction to what she said is way over the top.
There is so much anger simmering beneath the surface in America these days and that is very troubling. It is like there are volcanoes everywhere just waiting for a reason to erupt. Much of this display of anger can be attributed to Hollywood and the violence they regularly sell as entertainment. Our kids grow up absorbing movies with violence, obscenities, and a lack of decency. Another source of this anger might be the deterioration of family values. Many parents are just not working together to teach their children tolerance and respect towards others. Society is becoming unforgiving and self-centered. Time to hit the restart button and turn things around.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 5:59pmI couldn’t agree more with this girl. I’m just glad she said something before I said it and got in trouble. At my school it’s just as bad. They’ll walk on the left side of the sidewalk, holding hands, walking ridiculously slow, during high traffic hours.
