Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Romney’s Mormonism Off-Limits in the General Election

Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Mormonism Will Be Off Limits in General ElectionQuestions have surrounded Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s faith since his 2008 run for the White House. Mainly, people have wondered how his membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints would impact his prospects among Republicans and the nation as a whole (The Blaze has explored this subject in detail).

Now, some Republicans — particularly Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch — are openly claiming that the Obama campaign will try to use Romney’s faith against him in the general election. On Wednesday, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) responded to Hatch’s comments on the matter and flatly denied that faith would be a factor in Democratic campaigning this year.

(Related: Voter Confronts Romney With ‘Quotes’ From the Book of MormonDuring WI Town Hall)

“You watch, they’re going to throw the Mormon church at (Romney) like you can’t believe,” Hatch said during a campaign event in Utah.

Wasserman Schultz, who also chairs the Democratic National Committee, took issue with this claim, calling it “nonsense” and pledging that the issue of religion would be off-limits in the 2012 presidential campaign. She also characterized Hatch’s claims that the Democrats will exploit Mormonism for political gain “just preposterous.”

Watch her interview with MSNBC’s Chris Jansing to hear her thoughts (around 4:30):

“That suggestion is utter nonsense. Let’s remember that President Obama has had so many things hurled at him – birth certificate questions, whether he is or is not a Christian,” Wasserman Schultz continued. “For them to suggest that religion will be injected [into the election] by President Obama and the Democratic Party, I mean, I think they need to take a look inward at the accusations that their party and their supporters have hurled before they take that step.”

Considering the issues that President Barack Obama had surrounding Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his former church — and the ongoing controversy regarding how closely he adheres to his faith — it will certainly be interesting to see how the campaign handles Romney’s faith allegiance.

The Dems have Schultz keeping the Jews in line like The Rev. al, Jackson, Van Jones and Obama are keeping the Blacks under their thumb. Give welfare until they are hooked on it like a junkie on drugs. Look what the Democrats are doing to African Americans that start to shine – Allen West and Herman Cain, full bloods swept under the carpet for a half breed. With a half white and half black he will sell out to the highest bidder. The folks that give the most to his reelection campaign. All those folks are going to want big favors for those big bucks. You can bet “faith” won’t play any role in anything the Democratic party does.

On another note: If they throw that crap at us (even though I’m not keen on Romney) we need to have all the ducks lined-up for the “Black Liberation Theology” invented by the communists in the 1950′s to dislodge the Catholic influence in South America. I wonder where Chavez stands on BLT.

Miami, I’m glad your are going to vote! I hope you don’t have to walk over hot coals or show your original birth certificate to vote. Or, if you didn’t have your original birth certificate, go to some government office, fill out several forms and then pay $50 and then wait six weeks to get one in order one and then use that birth certificate to get a government issued ID, in order to vote for the your candidate of choice.

If you were born at home because you‘re poor and didn’t have health insurance getting a birth certificate would really be hard, harder than taking a shower of lemon juice!

Good thing your parents had the money for you to be born in a hospital. Otherwise the burdens you listed to voting would be a minor inconvenience by comparison.

But who gives a dang if poor Americans, or old Americans or minorities can vote, especially when brave Americans like you would walk through fire and then walk on coals to vote? You do that if you had to!

Definitely go vote, no matter what hurdles the Republicans throw in your path!

Just look at Wikipedia to see why Harry likes Big Government.
It says: “I think it is much easier to be a good member of the Church and a Democrat than a good member of the Church and a Republican.” He went on to say that the Democrats’ emphasis on helping others, as opposed to what he considers Republican dogma to the contrary, is the reason he’s a Democrat.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Reid
The thing that Glenn Beck emphasizes a lot is when Jesus says take care of the poor, he doesn’t want want Government to take care of them. He wants you to use your agency to help the poor. The money taken from you by the Government is not choosing to take care of the poor.
I guess the difference between the two is an understanding of the role of government.

Guess that means that our Saul Alinsky types will rely on their two other divisive topics: race and ” rich daft cats !” We know that this election boils down to one issue : capitalism versus Marxism. AND we know their playbook : Saul Alinsky/ it’s all about winning : ” The Prince was written by Machiavelli for the Haves to hold on to power . But, the point is: this book lays out the progressive left’s strategy in great detail. It is without remorse without virtue and without integrity … and as most of you know, it’s dedicated to Satan.

Alinsky (whose methods were taught by Obama at Harvard) was an associate of Al Capone. I‘m struggling through Obama’s books … which refer in admiration to Alinsky. God save us. God save America.

Every time some guy who hates Mormons (is hate a Christian value buy the way) they always bring up this magic underwear. Guys–this is getting really creepy. Why do you care so much what kind of underwear someone has on? I promise you I will never care what type, color, material, print patterns or any other aspect of the underwear you are wearing. A line from one of my kid’s school dress code said it well: Underwear, or the lack thereof, must not be visible or evident to anyone.

For that matter, why does someone care about which religion someone else is, if they are committed to doing good works? Faith in Christian beliefs is ENTIRELY between that person and the Lord –LDS or not. As a Latter Day Saint, I refuse to tell you that your religion is wrong. If you ask me about mine, I will offer you my thoughts on mine. If I think that you might be interested, I might offer my thoughts on the subject. If you say no, I will respect that. I am a convert to the church and that is how I learned about the church some 35 years ago. I have heard some members run down other churches since then but that is in opposition to the teaching from the leaders and I choose not to participate in that scene.

@WHKELL – I’m tempted to correct the many points of doctrine you are misinformed about regarding my religion. However, I will instead simply say that you need to realize that your doing exactly what the liberals want. They want us to tear ourselves apart as a political party on something that has NOTHING to do with politics. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is completely politically neutral. Thus, your debate is misplaced. If you want to question another religions beliefs, that’s fine, but it does not need to be part of a presidential campaign.

Brother – we all need to unite! We can all combine our similar VALUES to do some real good for this country. When we all worked together to help Prop 8 pass, it didn’t matter that we had different theological beliefs. We simply all believed that that traditional family is worth fighting for. Similarly, I’m sure we all agree that this country needs to get back on the right path towards prosperity. The ONLY way we can do that is by working together.

I will work with you to help save this country – will you PLEASE work with me?

Latter-day saints might be 100% incosistent with your interpretation of the Bible, but according to our understanding of the Bible, our religion is in complete harmony with it. We do claim to be Christians, but we don’t claim that we have all the same doctrines as other Christians. On the contrary, we assert that ancient Christianity, as established by Jesus of Nazareth, fell into apostasy, and that our Church and doctrines represent a restoration of original Christian priesthood, ordinances, and doctrines in preparation for the Second Coming of Christ as foretold by prophecy.

@ Whkell, if you had lived at the time of Christ and heard stories of a carpenter from a place called Nazareth, who worked great miracles and declared himself to be the Son of the living God, the promised Messiah. To whom would you turn to learn whether such stories were true? Would you go to the high priest and head of the Sanhedrin, Annas? Or perhaps to the high priest and Sadducee Caiaphas? They of course would have told you that He was a fraud, an imposter. And if you heard of the miraculous outpouring of the spirit on the day of the Pentecost, these scribes would have assured you it was no gift, the people were merely drunken with new wine. And when the soldiers came and our Lord was lead away with a rope around His neck as a common criminal, would that have resolved the matter for you? Then when the mobs cried before Pilate “crucify Him,“ ”crucify the imposter,” if the only thing you ever knew about Jesus came from the mouths of His enemies, then it is possible that you may have stood amongst the crowd
Obviously, all you know of Mormonism came from enemies of the lds church, you see Mormons do not believe we will be a god of our own planet, we do believe that man may become a “god,” and the belief is in fact biblical and profoundly Christian and I prove it on the following link:

      http://www.thoughts.com/dlmlds/actual-mormon-beliefs-are-biblical-and-profoundly-christian

Proof that Mormon beliefs are biblical and Christian………………………………

      @whkell

What you posted is silly and untrue. I don’t know where you get your information, but it’s untrue.

If you want to know what a conservative believes, would you go ask a liberal or Obama? Of course not, because you would get a twisted opinion littered with lies.

That’s what confuses me with people like you posting such ridiculous accusations about the Mormons.

If you want to know what Mormon’s believe, why not go to the source?

People like you go to Anti-Mormon websites, or talk to Anti-Mormon preachers for their information and copy-and-paste things from those sites or regurgitate the same old stupid talking points that they have been indoctrinated with, rather than objectively researching the information and finding out the truth of what Mormons believe.

Just like my example of asking Liberals about what Conservatives believe, you would also get a twisted opinion littered with lies if you get your information from an Anti-Mormon website or preacher.

If you want to know the truth about conservatives, ask a conservative, not a liberal or Obama.

If you want to know what Mormon’s believe, talk to a Mormon, or visit a Mormon website like http://www.LDS.org or http://www.Mormon.org.

I am sorry you have fallen into that old trap of judging others. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and I have never been happier. However misguided as your assumptions are, undoubtedly fueled by anti-Mormon literature, I cannot help but to remind you of what is at stake this election.
@Saranda, Your concerned over what a man believes? What do you think your current President believes? …..What is the definition of faith? 1. strong or unshakeable belief in something, esp without proof or evidence. Does that sound familiar? It should, considering that it applies to ALL religions including Catholicism. Protestantism, as well as Mormonism. I am Mormon by faith. I don’t have to prove my beliefs to anyone. Neither does Mitt Romney. If proof was required of your faith, could you prove it?… 100%? Mitt Romney will be a great President. He has upstanding values, and has a vision for this country. What are your options? Another 4 yrs. of the socialist B.O.? How about Santorum? Doesn’t it bother you that Santorum claims to be a good Catholic while conducting himself like a made for T.V. Evangelical? Think, if you make this about faith you will be sorrowfully disappointed.

WHKELL is one of those “Christians” that uses the bible to stir up hate that he may get gain.
He wouldn’t preach the gospel for free if his life depended on it. And he wouldn’t know Jesus if Jesus beat him in the face with a baseball bat. Maybe thats why he spent time in prison for insider trading before “Finding Jesus” or finding a way to make money off the followers of Jesus. Him and Obama are both fans of the adversary. Not the case? Well then give us the name of the real church of Christ? Its easy to bash a big target when nobody knows who you are. Give us the name of your church so we can put it under the same spotlight you put others under.

Of course it will be an issue. We (the right) went after Wright and Obama’s Black Liberation Theology last go round so, don‘t act like going after a candidate’s odd ball religious beliefs is off limits. Everyone knew Romney was a Mormon when they voted for him, don’t try and change the rules of political warfare now.

@GONZO – You have a very valid point. However, we were not attacking Obama’s religious beliefs but rather the teachings of his church that were directly degrading America. Obama could believe that Jesus was black, etc., but that has nothing to do with the office of the President. Thus it is not applicable to a presidential debate. But when his church was teaching GD America and Amerikkk, etc. that does have something to do with the office of the American President. See the difference?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is completely politically neutral. Thus, Romney’s religion has nothing to do with the job he applying for. Therefore, it has no place in the political debate.

      See the difference?

@P8triot – as much as I want to agree with what you say I do think it an important confirmation of a man’s decision making process to see what he believes. If a candidate truly believed in fairies and unicorns I would think that would skew my view of his decision making ability. For some of us what a man believes in his heart is important to know and understand. That is one reason why I, as a Catholic, have the BoMormon twice.

To me it matters what people I have to vote for or against can accept as fact.

I seriously doubt that the Dems are stupid enough to bring up Romney’s religious preference during the campaign.

I think it would only work against them with the current Muslim in the White House.

I’m no fan of Romney, and I will not vote for him, but my dislike for him has nothing to do with his religious beliefs. I dislike of him is solely because he is just another damned liberal. I refuse to vote for the lesser of two evils. We’ve been down that road and look where it has taken us …. to the brink of disaster.

I will not be part of it anymore. I will throw away my vote and write in my vote for a true conservative.

Maybe someday when the establishment realizes that the Republicans will no loger elect the establishment candidate that they continue to shove down our throats,….maybe then they will give us a true conservative who we can elect and begin to turn these disasterous decades around.
