Debt Ceiling Filibuster? Sen. Rand Paul is Ready

The August 2 deadline for raising the debt ceiling is fast approaching, and Senator Rand Paul is preparing for the battle ahead.
In this clip from C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers,” which aired Sunday, Senator Paul makes his feelings on raising the debt ceiling abundantly clear.
“Next week, we will filibuster until we talk about the debt ceiling, until we talk about proposals,” he said:
Senator Paul pointed out that he and his conservative colleagues are perfectly willing to raise the debt ceiling — so long as there is a balanced budget amendment added to the Constitution.
“[W]e will actually vote in favor of raising the debt ceiling next week if we can, but it will be contingent on passing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution,” he said, adding, “I’m not completely without the sense that we may need to raise the debt ceiling. But I will only do it if we have significant budgetary reform, and to me that means you have to balance your budget every year.”
Some of you may recall Senator Jim DeMint threatening a debt ceiling filibuster back in April.
We will see if the conservatives in congress follow through on this promise soon enough.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 10:03amThe Constitutional Ammendment put into place must have teeth within it that can force the balancing of the budget automatically…somehow Obama is just going to both use this mess for his own agenda and to give him the excuse to seize more and more power into the hands of the POTUS…or for him the wannabe dictator in all but name for now.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:59amDo NOT let the RINO’s compromise on a “partial” debt ceiling rise!
Fillibuster, or do what the Dewmocrats in Wisconsin or Texas do – find a hotel and register under a false name.
Or just do what Barak did when he was a legislator – vote “present” for any vote you don’t like.
Use the power the American people gave you to fight this government entittelment to keep spending!

the ones who scream will be the ones who are receiving the most and are likely to ones scamming the system.
somebody is getting the results of the spending.
look at greece, the people are rejecting the debt, we will do that here as well. the kids will reject the debt and say it is not my debt. the crisis is on the horizon.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:47amIt would really be nice to see this happen instead of all the stuff that goes on. Someone needs to reign in Obama and his minions. We are so far in debt already, that to keep up this out of control government with it’s regulations and spending needs to come to an end. So does Obama’s seat in the white house.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:46amThe Progressives in this country do not care about balancing a budget. They only want to spend until the house of cards falls down. When was the last time we actually paid down our actually debt? A balanced budget amendment would be welcomed. It just won’t be enough on its own.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:43amRaising taxes on “the rich and closing the corporate loopholes” will increase the revenue by $3 billion over ten years. This equals 91 cents a year tax savings for every man woman and child in this country. I’ll take mine in gold please. Thanks Sen. Paul. Please just tell the truth while filibustering.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:43amRepublicans cannot forget why they won so big in the last election. Problem is, the “seasoned Republicans” are leading this negotiation. Rino’s like John McCain, are hurting the conservative swing that must take place.

We have bigger things to worry about.
Lets’ just forget our sworn promise to the American people just before the election in 2010.
Move along.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:35amPaul’s wording is interesting since Congress cannot amend the Constitution. At best both Houses must approve by 2/3 majority a proposal to put a vote on an amendment to the states – no small task.
So is he saying that it’s all but impossible that he will vote to raise the debt ceiling?
I do agree on filibustering to make them address the debt ceiling & spending.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 11:40amron-wa. you are right there will not be an amendment in my lifetime, what is left of it. the only solution is to force a stop to the spending by not raising the debt ceiling. the u.s. will not go broke and government obligations will be paid but a whole sh-t load of leaches will not get any money. too bad.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 7:45pmWhat exactly is the DC “conservative agenda”. Giving in to the liberals at every issue? Do they really think the Libs will honor the “balanced budget proposal”? Really? Didn’t Regan get sucked into the same slimey trap? The issue is simple-STOP SPENDING. The world will not end, the elderly will not be cut off and left to die in the street, the poor will still get their food stamps. So maybe you won’t be able to visit all of Yellowstone, or maybe a part of the Smithsonian will be closed..big deal! What is matter with people? Have we become such whimps that the school yard bully scares us into submission?? ENOUGH!!! It’s time to do what is right for the country, not right for the person trying to get re-elected! I’m sick of all the whining and game playing. Grow some back bone “conservatives” and do what you were sent to DC to do! This is getting your hair done before brain surgery….WISE UP or loose your country. That simple!

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 5:23pmWe need some sort of penalty system applied when these congressmen don’t do their jobs. Same with POTUS and SCOTUS. These people screw us daily and then thumb their nose at us, because there are no penalties. Any new law, executive order, court judgment, etc. should pass a ‘Constitutional test’ before being enacted. I don’t know how, just thinking out loud here…
