Defecting: At Least 13 Lawmakers Switch to GOP Post Election

ATLANTA (AP) — Staggering Election Day losses are not the Democratic Party’s final indignity this year.

At least 13 state lawmakers in five states have defected to Republican ranks since the Nov. 2 election, adding to already huge GOP gains in state legislatures. And that number could grow as next year’s legislative sessions draw near.

The defections underscore dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party — particularly in the South — and will give Republicans a stronger hand in everything from pushing a conservative fiscal and social agenda to redrawing political maps.

In Alabama, four Democrats announced last week they were joining the GOP, giving Republicans a supermajority in the House that allows them to pass legislation without any support from the other party. The party switch of a Democratic lawmaker from New Orleans handed control of Louisiana’s House to Republicans for the first time since Reconstruction.

In Georgia, six rural Democratic state legislators — five from the House and one in the Senate — have switched allegiance to the GOP since Nov. 2. In Maine, a House Democrat flipped; in South Dakota, a Democratic state senator.

Most of the party swaps are in the South, where GOP rule is becoming more entrenched and Democrats — many of them already more conservative than their counterparts elsewhere — are facing what looks like a long exile in the minority.

In Georgia, the GOP swept every statewide office this year and brought, in the words of state Rep. Alan Powell, “an effective end, at least for the foreseeable future, to the two-party system in state government.”

Powell, who served in the House for two decades as a Democrat from a rural district in North Georgia, joined the Republican caucus this month after concluding it would allow him to get off the sidelines and again be a player on key issues. The 58-year-old real estate agent has been outspoken in his criticism of both Republicans and Democrats and expects to maintain an independent streak in the GOP.

Twenty-one state legislative chambers in 16 states moved into GOP hands this year, and for some Democrats keeping a seat at the table means trading a “D” for an “R.” Others, like Mike Millican of Alabama, one of those who joined the GOP last week, say that as the national Democratic Party has moved to the left, they‘ve found themselves more in line with the Republican Party’s political ideology.

In most cases, those who’ve jumped ship said the Democratic Party abandoned them — not the other way around.

“The Maine Democratic agenda is too focused on the bidding of various special interests,” said state Rep. Michael Willette, as he joined the GOP less than two weeks after being elected as a Democrat.

The changes in allegiance come after — and, in part, because of — big Republican statehouse wins across the country this election cycle.

“This was a wave election,” said Tim Storey, an elections expert with the National Conference of State Legislatures. “So you will probably see that wave continue with even more Democrats moving over as the impact of the election settles in.”

The GOP picked up a whopping 690 seats Nov. 2 — the largest shift since 1966, according to data compiled by the National Conference of State Legislatures. In addition to the legislative chambers Republicans took from Democrats, an ongoing recount in New York will help determine which party controls the state Senate there.

Republicans now control both chambers of the state Legislature as well as the governorship in 21 states.

The shifts come as legislatures are set to begin the politically charged, once-a-decade process of redrawing congressional and legislative districts to reflect updated U.S. Census population estimates. Typically, the party in power gets the chance to preserve strongholds or change districts once considered safe for the other party, meaning Republicans can solidify their majorities.

Carolyn Fiddler, spokeswoman for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, acknowledged the process will be a challenge for Democrats.

“We know that in some cases folks are scrambling to keep their districts,” she said.

But she noted those switching parties “should also remember they were elected with Democratic resources and Democratic volunteers.”

How that will play the next time the former Democrats are up for election remains to be seen.

Voters have not been kind to some of the more prominent converts recently. U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter lost a Democratic primary battle in Pennsylvania after abandoning the Republican Party, losing to a more liberal congressman who was later defeated in the general election. U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith of Alabama switched from Democrat to Republican this year only to lose in the GOP primary.

But since the civil rights era of the 1960s the South has been growing increasingly Republican, in part because of Democrats changing their party affiliations.

Georgia’s Gov. Sonny Perdue and his soon-to-be-successor Nathan Deal are both former Democrats and have been embraced by voters after switching over.

It seems that the less Progressive of the Democrats are looking for a less Progressive party. At this point the Democratic Party is officially Marxist/Socialist. Now we have to re-educate the newcomers to Conservatism. Its going to be a tough job, but that’s the kind of job you trust to a Conservative.

Ronald Reagan was a Dem before he was a Republican.

In the South our politics tend to be alot more conservative than in the rest of the nation.

Sonny Perdue has been an excellent Governor in Ga and he was a Dem before he was a Repub.

Conservatives need to all be in the same party… at least for now.

A conservative Dem switching to Repub is better than a progressive Repub any day of the week.

If we are going to rebuild the Republican Party into a right of center party then we will have to expect to make some changes. This not only means eliminating the Lindsy Grahams but it also means taking in disenfranchised Dems and Libritarians that want to make a serious effort to improve on the politics of the USA.

It’s hypocritical to prejudge these Dems that switched to Repub before they actually begin to cast their votes as Republicans.

If we are going to eliminate the Democratic Party from existance then we are going to have to accept conservative Democrat refugees into the Conservative Republican Party.

Give me a Sonny Perdue or Ronald Reagan over a John McCain or the George Bushes any day.

I totally agree with you. Especially in the South! A Democrat there is more like JFK, in favor of strong defense, pro business, pro low taxes, pro USA but just believes there are some things the government should help with (social programs). They tend to be socially conservative and fiscally moderate which is 100% better then a RINO. They tend to be open minded at least to the plight of business and where the jobs and incomes of people come from.

We do not need a bunch of flag waving – strong on national security RINO’s in our party like Graham and McCain that are in favor of national health care (in any form), amnesty for illegals, and free speech restrictions like the Campaign Finances Reform and Fairness Doctrine. They are a cancer. Give me a traditionally conservative, God fearing Southern Democrat over a Yankee RINO any time.

Some are rats, who will eventually find themselves overboard.

Others are probably conservatives (or at least fence sitters) who’ve come to realize the true nature of the current Democratic party.

We must not forget that, once, Ronald Regan was a Democrat.

He changed parties; because, he was for individual rights (a conservative); because, the Democrats were not (any longer) supportive of individual rights; and, he came to realize this; or, in Regan’s own words “I didn’t leave the Democratic party; my party left me”.

The Democratic party actually began abandonment of individual rights before former president Regan was even born; but, at least he figured it out.

People voted for Regan; because, he was Regan, not as a result of his party affiliation.
He could have stayed a Democrat, and still won elections – especially in CA.

I know, the situation is different now and that Republicans are winning, in part; because, they are not Democrats; but, by switching, these politicians are taking a risk.

Conservative candidates are winning Republican primaries, not RINOs.

Most liberals jumping ship to stay in power, will be all wet, soon enough.

I, being a miltary brat and a veteran, came to a realization during the 2008 election. It is my firm belief that the dems favorite president, and a man that most Reps won’t say many bad words about, John F. Kennedy, would probably be a Rep if he were alive today, albeit a liberal conservative. I have read many articles and a few books on the subject and I truely believs this.

Here’s what I am wondering.. WHY did it take the DEMOCRATS who changed parties so LONG to notice the DEMOCRATS moved totally LEFT.. I know sometimes it hard to put your finger on WHAT has gone WRONG with your party and the DEMOCRATS have been gradually moving to the extreme left.. HOWEVER.. with PROGRESSIVE Bush and Progressive Republicans in office it was hard to tell.. HOWEVER.. after the 2006 elections it was really apparent.. FACT: it could be the Republicans picked another PROGRESSIVE to run in 2008 Presidential elections people voted for Obama.. falsely thinking Obama was a moderate.. NOW however..the DEMOCRATS have awakened to the fact that there is NO LONGER a Democratic party.. it is the PROGRESSIVE PARTY.. most Democrats are CENTER maybe a little left/right..they now realize this administration is EXTREMELY LEFT.. and DEMOCRATS have NOTHING in common with their own party.. I have many friends who followed me when I left the DEMOCRAT party 5 years ago.. some are still sitting on the fence complaining and confused.. wondering what happened to the party and in denial.. but at least they are voting AGAINST them.. I think the Democratic Politicians are starting to wake up too and that is why they are switching parties.. they may not agree with the Republicans 100% of the time but they don’t agree with the PROGRESSIVES 0% of the time.. everyone is WAKING up.. some just faster than others..

The South, in particular, has a long tradition of being Dem — for over a century it was virtually impossible for a Rep to be elected. Many of those Dems are DINOs.

Find those good small government, low taxes, earmark adverse, reduce spending, TEA Party approved candidates. Even though elections may be 2 to 4 years away, line them up and be ready to kick the RINOs back over the rail. We need to keep polishing the deck until it is RINO free.

This is terrible and should be illegal. I did not like it when Jumpin Jim did it and I don’t like it now! Whether you agree with the reasoning or not, some voters who feel they really don’t like either candidate, vote based on political party in order to change control of a congress or senate in national, state and even local elections. To allow a candidate to change party after being elected under another party is a form of disenfranchisement in my opinion.

If they want to change party fine……resign and run under a new party next election. Until then party affiliation should stay with what you were elected under, at least as far as congressional control and the like.

Why leave the party though rather than stand your ground on your ideas and vote them, and actually read what your voting on. Is it now a party of everyone vote for what the leader says to vote for, dems should grow a backbone and represent there people

Are they switching sides just to make it “bipartison” when they vote with the dems on various bills?

It’s suspect. Why do they suddenly run to a place they should have been?
