MOSCOW (The Blaze/AP) — Russia has signed a contract to sell combat jets to Syria in a show of support for President Bashar Assad’s regime, a newspaper reported Monday.
The business daily Kommersant said, citing an identified source close to Russia’s Rosoboronexport state arms trader, that the $550-million deal envisages the delivery of 36 Yak-130 aircraft. A spokesman for Rosoboronexport refused to comment on the report.
If confirmed, the deal would mark an open defiance of international efforts to put pressure on Assad’s regime, which has faced broad condemnation for its brutal crackdown on an uprising. The U.N. says more than 5,400 people have died over 10 months. In recent months, the Blaze has covered the horrific reports coming out of the country.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (AP)
Russia‘s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week that Moscow doesn’t consider it necessary to offer an explanation or excuses over suspicions that a Russian ship had delivered munitions to Syria despite an EU arms embargo.
Lavrov told a news conference that Russia was acting in full respect of international law and wouldn’t be guided by unilateral sanctions imposed by other nations.
He accused the West of turning a blind eye to attacks by opposition militants and supplies of weapons to the Syrian opposition from abroad and warned that Russia will block any attempt by the West to secure United Nations support for the use of force against Syria.
“If some intend to use force at all cost … we can hardly prevent that from happening,” Lavrov said at a news conference. “But let them do it at their own initiative on their own conscience. They won’t get any authorization from the U.N. Security Council.”
Russia has been a strong ally of Syria since Soviet times when the country was led by the president’s father Hafez Assad. It has supplied Syria with aircraft, missiles, tanks and other modern weapons.
The Yak-130 is a twin-engined combat trainer jet that can also be used to attack ground targets. The Russian air force has recently placed an order for 55 such jets.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:29amThe YAK130 is crap they crash a lot and they are not a threat to any country unless that country has no air force. This move by the Russians is just a show of support all be it a weak one, the Russians are not in a position to escalate things militarily they can’t even supply themselves with suitable aircraft. This is just political bluster probably for their own citizens since they still think their aircraft are the best in the world at least they say that publicly but watch them avoid their own commercial aircraft when ever possible.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:45amThe Yak-130 is just an advanced training aircraft…The Israeli Air Force will love the target practice.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:04amYAK-130 IS trainer/light attack aircraft. As usual, Syrian air elements are going up against the best of the best in an Israel pilot. Splash 36 Yak-130″s. Russia is not doing any favor for Syria. Iran is still flying Vietnam era F-4 Phantom II’s.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 12:54pmIt might be a OK high performance trainer, I just don’t see it as significant ground attack aircraft. Syria needs CAS helicopters to take out the Muslim Brotherhood sponsored rebels, not trainers.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:00amUUHHH, I dont know whythe hubbub about the YAK 130. Its hardly a formidable weapon against ground targets, and zero lethality against airborn targets. The who said it could be a flying coffin was most accurate. It reminds me of the T-33 trainers I used to watch when I was in the Air Force, interesting, but not much. The people who do have to worry are the Syrian citizens, these will most likey be used against them.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:02amRussia (Tsar Nicholas II) was our ally in the American Civil War…The Europeans had threatened to interject themselves into our civil war on behalf of the Confederacy, but Tsar Nick II threatened them that it would be an act of war against Russia for the Europeans to intervene. So what did the Europeans do?
Well, when Abraham Lincoln needed a loan to pay the troops to fund the war, the Europeans refused to give him a loan for anything less than 26 – 36% interest. That’s why Lincoln printed the Greenbacks!
Of course, they murdered the last REAL Tsar (Nick II) and his entire family! This was the most heinous act since the murder of Jesus Christ. They were devout Christians.
Now, Russia is acting as an ally of the PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES. How? Because they‘re doing the same thing they did in the civil war but on behalf of other countries that’re being invaded and attacked by our CORRUPT GOVERNMENT which is NOT IN THE INTEREST OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
We the People are barely able to stand up to this corrupt warmongering government, and other nations around the world are watching America…the bastion of Freedom… being usurped by banking interest who has comandeered our military and police forces to treat the American people as enemies with the NDAA and other TREASONOUS ACTS BY THE PRESIDENT THE CONGRESS, SENATE, AND JUDICIAL!
The people of the world MARVEL at the Police State AMERICA HAS BECOME!

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 8:23amToo bad we can‘t say that we haven’t sold weapons to bad guys, but the Soviets in Afghanistan a few decades ago would remind us that we have. The Iraquis will remind us that Saddam was our guy, and the Iranians will remind us of how brutal the Shaw (who we installed) was.
When it comes to military hardware, anyone will sell anything to anybody. The super-powers have divided up the world of nations, and those nations are the spoils of the superpowers. We fight artificial wars on their lands just to make the military industrial complex richer.
There is a war going on, and it is about oil. The war is being fought on the economic front, with each superpower axis trying to make the other economically weak in order to get cheaper oil on the free world market.
Russia is not selling jets to Syria, Russia is selling jets to the coming new Syrian regime. It is up to America to decide this is a bad thing and engage in yet another fight in the middle east. If we stay out of it, eventually, the Syrian people will rise up and throw off their enslavers.
For us to even talk about it is like having the monthly meeting of death row inmates who’s cause it is to stop violence, especially death row execution violence.
LOL!

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 8:15pmThe difference between the Russians and the Radical Muslims are as follows. The Russian respect life and are in no hurry to die. Hence the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) theory worked. The Radical Muslims cherish death more then life. Hence they don’t care if they die and kill everyone with them. So do you really think allowing any Radical Muslim Leadership to get their hands on a Nuke is a good idea.
