Delta Airlines Pulls Ads from ‘The Daily Show,’ Catholic League Claims Victory

Jon Stewart’s bizarre “vagina manger” routine may have cost his show a major advertiser. Delta Airlines has pulled its advertising from “The Daily Show,” spokeswoman Leslie Parker confirmed with BuzzFeed earlier this week.
“We are constantly evaluating our advertising strategy and at this time no longer advertise during The Daily Show,” Parker told BuzzFeed, adding that the decision had nothing to do with the “opinions expressed” by the show’s host.
But this isn’t stopping Catholic League president Bill Donohue (the man who called for a boycott of Stewart’s show in April) from claiming victory.
“We are pleased with Delta’s response,” Donohue said.
Perhaps bolstered by the Delta news, Donohue said in a press release that the fight is far from over and that he has set his sights on Kellogg’s.
Why Kellogg’s? Because when the boycott first started, the Catholic League gave all contacted advertisers a copy of the offensive image used by Stewart.
“[W]e made sure they received a copy of the picture flashed on the screen of a naked woman with her legs spread with a nativity scene ornament in between,” Donohue said.
And while Delta Airlines decided to end its sponsorship of “The Daily Show,” Kellogg’s replied to the Catholic League with this:
We understand that our customers come from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, lifestyles, and cultures and we respect their individual decisions to choose the television programs that they deem acceptable for themselves and their families. Consumers speak most loudly when they vote with their remote control and change the channel or turn off the TV if a program does not fit their personal criteria.
Needless to say, Donahue wasn’t entirely happy with their response.
“In other words, Kellogg’s is telling Christians to shove it. But they made a mistake. We will now send the indefensible picture to their senior management and board, as well as to community leaders, religious and secular, throughout Battle Creek, Michigan,” the Catholic League President said.
“This is just for starters. We have the time, money, and the determination to give Kellogg’s some free advertisement,” he said, adding that although the company’s “Global Code of Ethics” vows to “treat everyone fairly and with consideration,” it apparently excludes the 80 percent of Americans who are Christian.

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 1:32pmThose of you who claim to champion the constitution yet support pressuring businesses to pull ads from Limbaugh, Beck, Daily Show or whoever in an attempt to control and limit their speech are kidding yourselves. Censorship is censorship. Trying to hold some business accountable for the content of a program is some left-wing thinking. You claim to hate the left but you’re just as quick to use their tactics to your advantage. Like when the GOP banded together to boycott the budget when their demands were not being met. Just like a union. Then again, if you people had an ounce of credibility, then you wouldn’t take an ad selling, user-tracking, sensationalistic tabloid “news” site like this seriously in the first place.

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 12:10amPersonally, I do not boycott a product just because they advertise on a program that I do not like. I prefer just not to watch the program.
The only time I will boycott a company or product is when they allow a group to establish a specific list that makes the claim that the sole purpose is to remove a program or as in FNC the whole network from the airwaves.
One company that I contacted was Wal-Mart. I shopped their every week. I never requested them to advertise on a program only to ask that they ask to remove their name from the list that states each company listed was in agreement to remove these programs.
Needless to say I no longer shop at Wal-Mart among others. I sent them a copy of the boycott group and showed them where this group had no other purpose than to silence certain programs or a certain network and that by allowing their corporation to be listed then they were acting in conjunction with this group.

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 11:24pmNow, let’s all say in unison, as we did with Glenn Beck, Dr. Laura, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Hank Williams Jr., and Ted Nugent that Jon Stewart’s First Amendment rights are being violated, and how people are suppressing his right to free speech and how a conspiracy is out to get him lead by President Obama – oh wait, strike that – some evil Republicans like the Koch Brothers.
No, you won’t. You won‘t say the same things you’ve said when advertisers dropped all those right wing guys. You won‘t say it’s a conspiracy, evil, or a violation of the Constitution, that he caved to the commie special interests or any other like comments. Hypocritically you cheer this on.
The fact is that the Constitution only prevents the government from restricting the rights of free speech. People, companies can pull their business advertisement or business from anyone they chose to.
I love this country and I love capitalism. Companies have to choose what shows to advertise on. They want to maximize profits, that’s their job.. And Delta has chosen not to advertise on Jon Stewart. That’s not a political decision, that’s simply Delta trying to maximize profits. Good for Delta. You don’t like Stewart? Don‘t watch him and if you’re a company, drop your advertisement. You guys think that’s un-American but I don’t. I think that‘s the way it’s supposed to work.

That is the way it is supposed to work, and it would work just fine if left alone to work that way.
But the left has never been known to just let things work out in their own way.
Now you have your panties in a wad because the other side is playing your “Media Matters” game, and it’s working.
See JZS, the part that we have a problem with, is when an un-involved, outside source sticks it’s nose where it has no business, and uses bully tactics, and coercion to force advertisers to pull their ads from the shows that you don’t like. That is not letting the process work itself out on it’s own. That is rigging the game.
As long as your ilk is going to play by those rules, get used to it.
Thanks for the laugh JZS……….you love capitalism………ha……

I agree with his last paragraph everything else needs more thought.
No JZS, the difference w/the shows you mentioned and every conservative show is that progressive groups rally ( Like Sharpton or Van Jones) and do media blitz boycotts/slander the advertisers. The advertisers get bombarded with phone calls non stop by these groups and demand they pull advertising. Its harassment and bully tactics that the left uses.
So no, it is not hypocritical what you stated is being done here. Consumer and capitalism is about having the freedom of choice to support businesses that practice responsibly/ethically or simply just have a good product. The consumers decide if they wish to boycott a product, not allow thugs to take that choice away from them.

In any case, I’m biding my time mother, for the time when the Republicans take the White House. At that point your Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security will be reduced so that we can get that dang deficit under control while we cut taxes for the richest Americans! A You know, the ones that are making record profits and who, if we give them even more tax breaks, might create some jobs if we ask them real nice to hire people their businesses don’t need because all their customers are so poor.
I got news for you Mom. When the Republicans take your money to give it to rich people, you will be dependent on me. The tables will turn. Because I have a job picking grapes (thanks to the Mexicans leaving) and bring in a couple of hundred buck a week, you’ll answer to me!
Then, you’ll live in the basement! Need medicine or eyeglasses or food or a little heat in the basement, things you can no longer afford thanks to the Republican budget? If you address me in a proper fashion, as your superior, I may grant some of your wishes, or maybe not.
