Dem. Congressman: Allen West Had Chick-fil-A Catered to Black Caucus Meeting, Insulted Everyone

A Democratic lawmaker says Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) “deliberately” offended members of the Congressional Black Caucus by having chicken and biscuits from Chick-fil-A catered to their weekly meeting, the Huffington Post reports.
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) said West even went a step further and walked out of the meeting even though it was his turn to provide the group with a formal lunch. He told the Huffington Post that the incident took place roughly 6 months ago but he apparently feels they are relevant given the recent controversy surrounding restaurant President Dan Cathy’s decision to publicly back traditional marriage.
West recently voiced his support of Chick-fil-A.

“We have a rotation in the Congressional Black Caucus where every member provides the lunch one of the weeks when we meet,” Hastings told HuffPo on Monday.
“We have fried chicken. And we have catfish and BBQ. We do not have watermelon, although sometimes people will have fruit. We serve a full course meal with collard greens. We have Jamaican beans and rice,” Hastings said. “But West ”sent Chick-fil-A with biscuits. Ok?”
“That was an ‘in your face.’ Every member of the Congressional Black Caucus that was there was offended,” he added.
West is the only Republican member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Even though the Chick-fil-A controversy hadn’t erupted yet, Hastings said lawmakers were insulted because they felt West was making as statement and promoting the conservative views held by Chick-fil-A ownership.
“He did it deliberately,” Hastings said, explaining that he saw West’s message as, “You know, ‘That’s what I think of you all.’”
The Huffington Post has more details:
The Democratic lawmaker said West hasn’t been back to any CBC meetings since then.
A West spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment. A spokeswoman for the CBC also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Hastings and West represent adjacent districts in Florida. Hastings is in a solidly Democratic district, but West is running in a newly drawn district this year, the bulk of which President Barack Obama won in 2008. Despite the close proximity of their districts, Hastings said they never talk, not even in passing on Capitol Hill.
“He doesn’t speak to me by his own choosing,” Hastings said, taking issue with some of West’s harsh personal attacks on fellow Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D). Among other things, West last year called her “vile, despicable and cowardly” for challenging his views on Medicare during a House floor debate.”
“I wouldn’t want to go into his mental state,” Hastings added. “All I know is his verbiage and his rhetoric is way over the top. Way over the top.”
There is one scenario that Hastings has failed to consider: Maybe the chicken from Chick-fil-A is just delicious and that’s why West chose to provide it at the meeting — 6 months ago.
Angela Melvin, a spokeswoman for West, told ABC News that the food choice “had nothing to do” with the company’s political views.
“He loves Chick-fil-A,” Melvin told ABC News. “Catered the event on something that was affordable and what average Americans eat. The fact that Mr. Hastings would turn this into anything else is laughable and desperate.”
Disputing Hastings’ claims that everyone in the meeting was deeply offended, Melvin said there was “not a plate left” by the end of the meeting.
West recently said he was raised on Chick-fil-A and that he “loves” the restaurant when talking about how free speech factors into the controversy. Watch here via Shark Tank Media:

I respect his service as much as anyone else. I don’t buy into the war crimes allegations, and I even love his rhetoric, but I hate the loss of liberty he voted for. Can someone tell me what I’m missing? I thought the goal was to give the 2010 crop of tea party candidates one shot then vote them out if they betrayed tea party principles, which he did. Is everyone just unaware of his voting record or are we just giving him (and other tea party congressmen) a pass on voting away rights? Seriously I’m just asking. Are our civil liberties important to the Tea Party or not?

If you are referring to the NDAA, I wasn’t aware he had voted to allow thousands of drones to spy unconstitutionally on private citizens without due process where a certain amount of privacy should be expected. Is that what you are referring to? If so, we need to make it a priority to roll back along with all of Cass Sunstein’s regulations, ALL of them right after the removal of ObamaloneyCare. Would like to know if it is the NDAA you mean with West.

The whole thing really makes me laugh. I thought is was unique since so much has been said about Chick Fil A in the last week or so. It was a perfect decision on Allen West’s part.
What’s the deal? Did the chicken in a biscuit insult them? Stupid! Does watermelon insult them? Stupid. Funny, I’m not black but I like collard greens too and black eyed peas and cat fish, etc. What’s their problem? Couldn’t figure out what insulted them. Thin skinned.

What I like are West’s always controversials comments. It‘s it’s campaign strategy, although not something for which he’ll ever recieve recognition as a great statesman. He’ll certainly be recogonized in history as someone who was so antagonstic that he never accomplished a thing in office. But that’s obviously not what he cares about.
I love reading his opinions, such as that liberal women are “neutering men” and that Americans, if the disagree with him, should get the heck out of the country.
Yeah, that all sounds real cute and may get him votes, but he’s no Licoln and no Martin Luther King. He’s just some guy getting elected by appealing the the hateful and ignorant. We’ve always had people like him in this country. And history always remembers them, if at all, for their fringe beliefs, if for no other reason than they are unable to accomplish anything in office.
Somebody please tell me once single bill that West or Bachman that has become law. You can’t because there are none. He‘s no statesman that’s for sure.

It is delicious, and somehow I doubt that they were offended enough for all of them to bypass these delicacies. My guess is that it was free food, for the attendees, which is all the more reason why it was probably chowed down on by those attending.
What is this politically correct menu stuff all about. Is fried chicken only for white people? That is clearly discriminitory, and racist to boot. I’ll eat fried chicken if I want, and no racial separatist is going to stop me!

Good suggestion but for one tiny detail. The RNC doesn’t care one whit who the voters in this country want in any given position. They back those who do their bidding, and their bidding is more power (money) in the RNC coffers. They hand picked Romney before the first caucus/primary ever occurred.
The RNC/GOP is a progressive faction that has constantly and consistently moved leftward over the last half a century. They are barely distinguishable, in practice, from the D party. Peace.
