DEM Congresswoman Proposes Law to Fill Out Brackets – TAX BRACKETS!

Another day in Washington DC, another ironically named piece of legislation is proposed.

Meet the Fairness In Taxation Act.

The current top tax bracket is 35%. The new Schakowsky tax brackets, for income starting at $1 million would be:

* $1-10 million: 45%
* $10-20 million: 46%
* $20-100 million: 47%
* $100 million to $1 billion: 48%
* $1 billion and over: 49%

That is just the Federal Income Tax rate being proposed.  We must remember that many Americans pay income tax on a state and local level. Cities and counties in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, DC, Delaware, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania all have individual income taxes.

If you combine the new rates with the individual state income taxes levied by 43 of the 50 states, top earners will easily eclipse the 50% taxation mark. And for people who live and work in New York City where the combined top personal tax rate is 12.62%, their rate would now pass 60%.

It is not as if these new taxes would dig us out of the massive deficit hole in which we are currently wallowing.  According to the very liberal organization Citizens for Tax Justice, the Fairness in Taxation Act would only raise about $79 billion if enacted in 2011.  The current estimate for the 2011 fiscal deficit is $1.267 TRILLION.  By collecting another $79 billion from wealthy people (who might otherwise spend that money on goods and services which might, in turn, create jobs for some of the million of unemployed), Schakowsky’s “fairness” tax barely dents the deficit.

When you are trying to sow the seeds of class warfare, the chant of ‘tax the rich’ may appeal to your base, but it is not a feasible solution.

According to a recent National Review story from Kevin D. Williamson, there are not enough rich people to tax away the deficit… even if we taxed them at 100%.  He makes some very clear points:

But say we wanted to balance the budget by jacking up taxes on Club 250K. That’s a problem: The 2012 deficit is forecast to hit $1.1 trillion under Obama’s budget. (Thanks, Mr. President!) Spread that deficit over all the households in Club 250K and you have to jack up their taxes by an average of $500,000. Which you simply can’t do, since a lot of them don’t have $500,000 in income to seize: Most of them are making $250,000 to $450,000 and paying about half in taxes already. You can squeeze that goose all day, but that’s not going to make it push out a golden egg.

He further clarifies with unimpeachable stats:

The Bush “tax cuts for the rich” cost the Treasury about $800 billion in forgone revenue; the Bush tax cuts for the middle class cost trillions – 2.2 of them, to be precise.

Williams’ piece concludes with this bit of brilliance:

there simply aren’t enough rich people for us to pillage or enough loot to make it all work. We have finally, as the lady predicted, run out of other people’s money.

And yet Congresswoman Schakowsky will continue with her folly. The Illinois Democrat and her nine co-sponsors (all Democrats) have proposed this piece of legislation claiming that they are only doing what a majority of the American people are asking them to do.  I wonder if she felt the same way when a majority of Americans were against the Healthcare Bill?

Here, for your edification, is the Congresswoman making her pitch for the new tax brackets.

    Squeeze more (rich) peolpe for more revenue that still wont dent the defecit or debt. What’s blaring is her failure to mention spending, they don’t have a revenue problem, they have a spending problem. Hypothetical, lets soak the rich 100% of their income, if it doesn’t cover the debt then what would you cut. If it miraculously put us in the black what new programs would you institute, these people are out of control.

    “…The Illinois Democrat and her nine co-sponsors (all Democrats) have proposed this piece of legislation claiming that they are only doing what a majority of the American people are asking them to do…”

    Was this liberal elected by the majority of Americans, or only by the majority of a distinct Illinois Congressional district? Where do these Congresscritters get off saying stuff like this, by what authority dare they make such claims?

    It’s amazing–when tax cut referenda win, liberals take the results to court to try getting a judge to nullify the will of the people, then turn around and say the majority of Americans want taxes raised. This is either flat-out lying or a new form of insanity that needs an entry in the listing of the American Psychiactric Association.

    Hopefully, this FITA thing will never get out of committee, assuming it’s even considered in the first place.

    The fallacy is the so called money forgone, it does not exist, and never will, RAISE taxes on the wealthy, and they quit producing and you get LESS tas revenue, so the 800 billion is a lie.

    After Bush cut the top rate from 39% to 36% the total actual dollars collected from this bracket went up, as well as the % of overall tax revenue, up from 86 % of all money collected to 89%.

    The original income tax was supposed to be not more than 7% of income.

    The richest of the rich only paid seven percent, while the average American paid one percent. Of course, it didn’t last. By the end of Wilson’s term the lowest bracket bumped up to four percent and the highest at 73 percent.

    President Harding decided to listen to Mellon. And from 1921 to 1926, Congress worked to reduce the top tax rates. Eventually they got to top rates down to 25 percent. The result: Tax revenues from the wealthiest taxpayers tripled. The national debt dropped from $24 billion to $18 billion

    So the rich paid more real money, with lower tax brackets, because they could create wealth, which creates demand and creates jobs, not the progressive downward spiral we are returning too.

      “RAISE taxes on the wealthy, and they quit producing and you get LESS tas revenue,”

      If you raise taxes beyond a certain point that may be true, but we’re not at that point yet. People in the highest tax bracket used to pay 94% of their income in taxes a while back and that didn’t destroy America or made all rich people leave, so I think we could safely raise the highest tax bracket to at least 90%.

      Look to the O’s beloved Europe for answers. Most of the EU countries tax at 50%+ so many of the wealthy have a home in their country of origin, but their residence is in Monaco, Andorra, Lichtenstein, where there is no personal income tax. Here in the US, how many companies have their HQ(a post office box) in the Caribbean Islands? Why do most shipping companies register their vessels in Liberia?
      The answer will never be found in more taxes or higher taxes, it is only in smaller and more efficient government. Just thinking of taxes, the vast majority of Americans who file taxes do so electronically and the returns are verified electronically, however, the number of IRS employees has more than doubled over the past ten years. What are they all doing?

      Non-

      Are you serious, where did you get the idea 90% would not stop people from earning or shipping their income production overseas.

      In 1920 the rate was only 73% and the economy was crippled, cut the rate to 25% and the rich PAID 3 times more.

      Study Arthur Laffer, he says the top rate needs to be reduced more, and if you want to maximize tax revenue the bottom rate needs to increase, especially since nearly 50% of the adult population does not pay income taxes.

      If you want this country to grow and prosper, (something the progressive democrats are against) you need to cut taxes, eliminate corporate taxes, and open this nation to drilling for oil and gas, new nuclear power plants. The demand for construction and steel alone would create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

      We (non-Chicago residents of Illinois that is) don’t want Obama back either. I’m hoping we can broker a trade with California for Meg Whitman or Carly Fiorina when he loses in 2012. Those who claim to be democrats downstate are generally just as conservative as the republicans in Chicago. The downstate conservatives are, well, very conservative. Gov. Quinn claimed that winning 4 out of 102 counties (basically Chicago) gave him a strong mandate to raise our income taxes and do pretty much whatever he wants… like using the income tax increase to try to back a plan for borrowing another 6 billion to spend. I believe we’ve now surpassed California with the worst outstanding present + future liabilities in the country (over 80 billion).

      Come to think of it, maybe we can get a package deal if we send Gov. Quinn with Obama….Two terrible liberals for one conservative leaner? Or, perhaps like someone suggested earlier we just let Chicago be its own state so the rest of us can get on with our lives.

      2. All profits of corporations are confiscated by government

      3. Any individual or corporation who wants to invest or expand, will apply for a loan from the government, the loan payable @ 10% interest and all profits from those ‘investment’ to be confiscated by government.

      If they confiscated all wealth in the country, it would balance the budget for 1 year and one year only. In the 1930′s FDR went after a similar solution. It resulted in everyone with money, shutting down factories and leaving the country. The rest of the world pulled out of the depression in 1935, we were still at 25% unemployment in 1938. It has been tried before and always fails.

      These people are crazy, they keep suggesting the same thing over and over hoping it will work this time. Read an economics book, read history, or ask a business owner.
      A year ago I had XXXX amount of disposable income, with inflation, wage freezes, I calculated this month, I have lost 8% of my income and with gas prices going up, I am losing more every month. It equates to my family not spending as much, therefore my demand for products decrease. Apply that to thousands of individuals and businesses when you raise taxes, they don’t have that money to spend, therefore, demand for goods and services go down.
      Now if you say, Govt. can make up the difference by spending that extra money, right now, any extra money they get will simply go to pay interest on the national debt. That does not create a demand for services or goods, and in most cases goes to other countries.

      So, to summarize, why would this plan of hers be good?

      How do these totally ignorant, elitist, asinine, moronic, foolish, senseless, slow-witted, and lacking in common sense clowns EVER get elected to any type of political office. Most of all, WHO are the dolts that vote someone like this into office? I am tired of working for other people to have when I am going without to make ends meet. Something has got to give and when it does it’s not going to be very pretty.

Duped again by that beautiful alluring half naked seductress known as socialism and her promise to take the fruits of my labor. Man it just gets harder every day to resist the liberal’s temptation. Of course then I burp and it passes….. :)

      It was a rigged survey! Of course most people want “fair” taxes. Most people think no one should be taxed more than 35%. You Dems would spend more than you bring in any way. Why not get some disciline in your spending?

Anyone who can get a job or transfer out to this state are applying to do so… she is a out and out LIAR.. the ONLY ones who are board with this are in CHICAGO the land of the LOST… the REST of the state is CONSERVATIVE.. Think we should make CHICAGO a state by itself they wouldn’t be able to pay their electric bill for the city street lights.. they SUCK the money from the rest of the state for their ILLEGALS which is the reason the DEMOCRATS keep getting RE-ELECTED..and the CITY employees who are sucking the rest of the residents dry with their pensions that Daley and the Unions stole..

      When you add in the state income tax of Illinois, the county income tax and the city income tax, the poor billionaires will owe, in taxes, more than they earn. The democraps will never learn that if you take away the majority of my earnings, I will quit my job, go on welfare and never pay taxes again!

      We are all arguing about the wrong thing and that is what the proper income tax would be for different levels of income. I would argue that the proper income tax for everybody should be zero. The income tax should be replaced by two taxes, which everyone would end up paying on a fair and equitable basis. The first tax would be a national sales tax or value added tax. This tax would be targeted to meet the needs of the day-to-day operation of the federal government. The tax rate would be something below the 23% advocated by Neil Bortz, probably something around 13%. The second tax would be an asset tax on all financial assets of individuals, corporations, foundations, and any legal entity in the United States. This tax would be calculated, because we would know the value of the assets above, to cover all entitlement programs and wealth transfer programs in the United States. Too long the mantra has been to tax the rich when actually what we are doing is taxing the producers and entrepreneurs. Under my proposed system everyone would be taxed and equitable share. If you earn your money and choose to spend it on goods and services, it will be taxed at the 13% rate. If you choose to invest your money for the future, it will be taxed at a lower rate. The asset tax rate should always be considerably lower than the asset tax rate. The true rich, those with a lot of financial assets who live off trust funds and foundations, will no longer be able to avoid taxation because they have no “income”. They will pay the asset tax plus the sales tax like everyone else. All other taxes would be eliminated on the federal level. This includes corporate income tax and estate taxes. Under this system individuals would be free to earn as much as they want with no penalty for achievement and wealth building. There would also be no exemptions from the asset tax for any reason. To make all this fair I believe the ratio of sales tax to asset tax should be around 7 to 1 on the low-end and 12 to 1 on the high-end. Maybe if everyone has skin in the game, the politicians will not be so anxious to spend because they will be equally affected. Needless to say this system would work a lot better if government spending could be drastically reduce

      These Dems make unsubstantiated statements like “The majority of Americans want this” and do so without a shred of proof. Does this mean that more than 51% of the country has personally contacted her and thus she can truthfully make that statement? I think not, and I dare her to give us proof that that many Americans actually feel that way. When will these progressives learn that they cannot keep on making wild pronouncements just to get people to agree with them? If you have to stretch the truth to make a point, then the point is indefensible to begin with.

      Here is my solution, Tax Congress on their shortfall of a balanced budget.

      * $1-10 million: 45%
      * $10-20 million: 46%
      * $20-100 million: 47%
      * $100 million to $1 billion: 48%
      * $1 billion and over: 49%

      Take the amount they are over out of their collective salaries, should they go over budget more than 1 billion, they work free for the year.

      The individual states must reclaim the powers not delegated by the states to the Federal government. The power to do so is already in the constitution… in fact – that is what the constitution is all about – Limiting the federal gov’t.. It is the only permanent solution and the only way to free our children and grandchildren from the slavery we are living through!

      Hey cheez,
      Here’s my formula the Fed. Government get 7% in taxes the states get 10% from the people within their states. We shut down most government agencies and return the power to each individual state.

      It is just Good policy for all of us to tighten up to pay our National Bills – that will cover the Wars and last decade’s overblown Homeland security costs that protected everyone of our American sisters and brothers. Thank You! Combined with cutting those special Costs now that the war on terror is Over, this should mean our children and grandchildren will have a better future! Thank You!
