Dem. Gov. Admits: No, We’re Not Better Off Than We Were 4 Years Ago

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) broke with his party Sunday to say Americans are not better off than they were four years ago — but said that’s not what the November election is about.

Democrats have been studiously avoiding the “are Americans better off today?” question, but O’Malley addressed it head-on during an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“No,” he answered host Bob Schieffer, two days before the start of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. “But that’s not the question of this election.”

He continued, according to BuzzFeed: “Without a doubt, we are not as well off as we were before George Bush brought us the Bush job losses, the Bush recessions, the Bush deficits, the series of desert wars, charged for the first time to credit cards — the national credit card.”

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter added that she wanted to “remind you what was happening four years ago at this time.”

“In the quarter before the president took office, we lost three million jobs. Our country was bleeding. Our financial system was on the verge of collapse. We were passing bank bailouts to ensure that our system could stay afloat.That’s what was happening before the president took office,” Cutter said.

    Our economy is fundamentally flawed and was going to collapse sooner or later. It would have collapsed in mid 1990s but a technology boom kept things afloat. It would have collapsed in early 2000s but the government artificially lowered interest rates and started a housing boom. Both of these made the inevitable collapse stronger and more intense

    We had a pre-collapse in 2008 but the government injected inflation, bailouts, and debt into the economy which kept things from falling apart. The government has no other bullets left in the chamber. With the debt and government ownership, this economy is weaker than in 2008 and the collapse in the next few years will be worse than anything in the last 20 years.

      People aren’t better off; most of us are worse off. Yes, that is the question of this election. Romney and Obama are the only ones that can win and Obama will only make matters even worse than they are now. Johnson doesn’t have a chance and would get out of the race if he actually cared about the country. Romney wasn’t my first choice, but he’s smarter and is a far better person than Obama. Getting Romney in and Harry Reid out is the only chance we have of starting to make things right.

      Ya, Bush messed up, but Democrats didn’t CHANGE anything. They HOPED that by using the same old, tired, BACKWARD ideas and jumping on the accelerator things would get better. They’re heading in the wrong direction and making things worse. A strong America is towards the Constitutional, free market, small government, “character does matter” Conservatives – Right. The road to Greece is towards the Keyensian, Marxist and Progressive, “you didn’t build that,“ ”depends on what the meaning of the word is is” Liberals – Left.

      Romney on the Right or Obama on the Left, voting for anyone else is throwing your vote in the trash bin.

Yes, the great technology boost in the 90′s was when the average office worker had a PC on their desk with common software tools and connectivity. Blue-Dress Bill Clinton did NOT do ANYTHING to boost the economy except GET OUT OF THE WAY.

      Now that there aren’t any new productivity boosts coming our way, the bubble economy has nowhere to go but down. Every time the politicians push some new “stimulus” or program, they just postpone the inevitable crash and make it worse.

      If Obama controls healthcare in an aging society then he effectively control its death rate.  If he controls the death rate then he can effectively control the amount of revenue collected as a result of the death tax (the federal estate tax).  This is a tax that is assessed on the value of all of your assets upon your death including your house, cars, furniture, business property, machinery and inventory, stocks, bonds and real estate.  This is a big part of his hidden agenda.  This is the pot of gold Obama is after.  
      In 2013, the exemption drops from $5 million to $1 million.  Under an Obama 2nd term that exemption will fall much further and the death tax rate will climb enormously.  This is how he is going to “spread the wealth around”.

      They forget that for the majority of Bush’s reign, jobless rate was 4.5%. When he handed it off it was 7%

      I cannot for the life of me understand why people do not get what Fanny and Freddy did to our economy-and Barney and friends lied like rugs. It was the beginning of the end for a middle class upgrade for so many. They wanted a home and the real estate peple used all the government programs to get them in homes they couldn’t afford, and then the stuff hit the fan. Some were greedy and overbought, some just wanted something, and they were all told “sure, we can get you in that”. Thank God my kids were already in homes and didn’t try to upgrade. That entities-F&F, greased the skids of a collapse. And then there was the unions…………..and the banks…………

BO WANTS illegals here taking jobs and ruining the social fabric, he does NOT want to create jobs via the pipeline nor rebuilding the bridges and highways. He wants to punish the rich and business owners by burdening them with health care pressures via obamacare. BO wants to force Catholic social services to provide contraception and abortions knowing they will instead close since abortion and contraception is considered grave sin. He wants to make America a second rate nation.

    I have found that you can not ask a liberal if they are better off now than they were 4 years ago, Well may be you can a few of them but the ones I run into are suffering bad with O.C.D, its like a cornered dog ready to attract in any way they can , I become the vilion only trying to help them explain them selves. In most cases even with people one would call professional its hope less you can not change there minds or explain the facts. So I flatly refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.       DanfordDan – You are so correct. The majority of the libs are mentally ill. I’m serious…they have no intention of thinking about the situation, past causes, or future solutions.

      One lib (and there are many more) at work, campaigned for Edwards, and thinks socialism is the way. I have him state his positions, and describe that he has the same ideology as a National Socialist. What is bad is socialism is okay with him. He really thinks all info from Fox is incorrect, and all info from Hufpo is correct.

      The idiot is prior military, works for the Fed government and has taken the oath many times. The problem is he has never read the Declaration and Constitution (which I provided him a copy) which his oaths are about. No embarrassment, just denial.

    As the deficits top 1 trillion dollars each year,the question of this election shouild be targeted directly at the people surviving on food stamps and other government programs…..What are you going to do when China stops giving us the money to pay for your stuff?????We need to create jobs and you need to get one of those jobs so you can pay for your own stuff when the free stuff runs out….Thats what needs to be said.

      Unfortunately the Words One Trillion Dollars means nothing to the average voter, it boggles their mind.
      This election will come down in my mind to changing the vocabulary so that people sitting around their kitchen table will understand. Example: “Deficit” Ask any 10 people what the deficit means and you will get blank looks back, because it’s a Technical Business Accounting word. Change Deficit to “Over Spending” and watch the reaction to your statement that under Obama this Country is Over Spending more then one Trillion dollars every year then what we bring in then ask them what do they think about that. Next the word Trillion has no visual in their mind for them to use to grasp the vastness of that number. To that end google….“ What does a Trillion Dollars LOOK LIKE”… and then pass on to friends and family what you see.

      Its basically still bush’s fault, that’s all the democrats have, even though things we not so bad with bush until the dems took over in 2007, bush signed some things that the democrats in congress approved ! but its still all his fault ? The Dodd/Frank bill which mandated banks to lend to millions of people who did not qualify for a mortgage caused the collapse, OH THOSE ARE DEMOCRATS, BUT ITS STILL BUSH’S FAULT, RIGHT ? So what does obama do to an out of control debt ? Add more debt faster than any president in history ! OH and all the FAILED bailouts ? GM never paid back any money from profits, it was a slush fund from TAXPAYER money ! and GM is in the RED AGAIN !

      I am not a big bush or romney fan, but they are not full on socialists or anti-colonialists, like obuma, and would do less damage than this inept POtuS.

      If obuma gets another term, he may put US in a tailspin that we may never recover from, I am not kidding, this country could fall, just like other countries, at least if romney gets in, he would not do as much damage, and may even help, until we could get someone like Rand Paul in ?

Granted, the steal elections and they have the lame-brained media in their hip pocket, but the lost BIG 2010; and things are not looking rosy for their 2012 prospects. demos are switching parties, and RATS are jumping the ship of state. From your comment, one would expect that they (the Left) would control gov’t. We have Jim DeMint, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, Jason Chaffetz, Darrell Issa, and many others (some will be new in 2012). It is amazing to me that repubs and especially conservatives are elected given the Left’s advantages.

      Hey Blazers, do you have amnesia. 4 years we were about to go into a depression. Thanks to our “risk taker” in WallStreet. We were loosing jobs at a a rate of 700 thousand per month. The DOW had dropped down to 6,500, the credit market was frozen, … I hope you all agree that we are better of then 4 years ago. The better question is should we have been more better off.

      Number one reason why Romney will lose: Not many folks know “why” we need to elect Romney. Bill Kristol said the same during Fox News today.

      CB Brown quotes one month of 700k job losses as if that was the number every month under Bush……WRONG. As a business owner, I unfortunately was forced to contribute to the Bush job losses as the Pelosi/Reed congress started imposing its will in 2008 and then the final nailin the coffin was when BHO was elected in Nov and smart business men like me saw what was coming and immediately was forced to downsize….WHICH is why the unemployment numbers were so high the last few months before BHO took over.

    Maryland is a very liberal state only because much of its population consists of minorities. I hope that the voters realize that this governor and his party are wrong for their personal welfare and they realize how the liberal party has had a strong history of oppressing them rather than helping them.

Perhaps I have a jaundice view of the level of pain my fellow citizens are dealing with living in California, a land so far down the rat hole escape is doubtful due to one party rule over the last 20 years.       California will never recover from it’s current status. It will only get worse. The government is trying to sqeeze money from companies, so many are considering moving out of state to stay solvent. Entitlements are out of control as the “third rail”. Immigration and the granting of USA civil liberties to non-USA citizens is driving the state deeper into that rat hole you are refering to. I lived in CA for 26 years and my friends and former co-workers paint a very bleek picture. Electing Jerry Brown for Gov was a joke, making Californians look like a bigger set of fools than previously thought.

      Your right! The Democrat Party has charted a course similar to what Detroit did to respond to there collapsing economy. They embarked on a course of Raising Taxes to overcome the lack of money flowing into City Coffers which had the effect of making the problem worse by driving more and more people out of the City.       Don’t be distracted We and Obama where well into a recession before the 08 election. Obama asked us to give him the Power of the Presidency to fix the economy. This election is about how well he did that job. I find myself agreeing with Rush when he voiced his fear that this election will be decided by the Most Stupid amongst.

      They fail to mention that all the last two years of Bush WERE the first two of PELOSI, REID, AND OBAMA (he was voting present in the Senate when not running for Prez which I admit was most of those two years) … the Dems took the CONGRESS in 2006 election and put us on this downward spiral!

    If you had $500,000 to manage and invest on behalf of your future and that of your children and grandchildren….and, if you could entrust it to only one of two men (Barack Obama or Mitt Romney)….with whom would you entrust the money?

      I nominate you as the script writer for Romney’s next multi-million dollar ad campaign. The question you pose is the question un-decided voters MUST ask themselves this election. It is very likely those with no money, skills, dreams or prospects will choose Obama. We’ll find out in November if such people have become the majority of voters.

      Dwindling Nest Egg savings and investments meant to finance our American Dreams, whether $5,000 or $500,000, are currently languishing in the custody of a man who does not believe in the virtues of capitalism or the awesome benefits free markets have provided to mankind. Instead, we are facilitating Obama’s dreams and Progressive/Socialist ideals. Whether you believe this to be the case or not, at least admit to yourself that a bigger, more powerful government is not simply a “KINDER GOVERNMENT” (such an oxymoron, like “gentleman bandit”, “free with purchase”, or “clear as mud”). This assumption has and will continue to devastate our financial future because big government is extremely expensive and inherently inefficient, as our 16 trillion dollar National Debt reflects. Washington is financially broke and is living on a Chinese credit card with each year’s bout of over-spending. How could anyone choose another 4 years of failure?

      I wouldn’t call a federal sales tax on every item sold, a cap and trade tax, Romneycare funded by Obama tax, the department of homeland security, the patriot act, the NDAA freedom. We even have our own version of the brown shirts, the TSA and the gestapo, the NSA.
      That ain‘t freedom and it isn’t going away under Romney.

      I work in MD and have seen the troubles get deeper and deeper in the State. To have elected the failed Mayor of Balt to Governor was just complete stupidity. The suburbs are populated by conservatives who always lose to free loaders in Baltimore City and Washington influenced PG County. Now they are completely bankrupt and don’t know how to fix the problem. The state gov. is in a complete hiring freeze and not replacing empty positions because they have no way to pay the workers. They are quickly following California into the Democrate sinkhole

    I’m not looking for a president that can move oceans or walk on water. But I’m not looking at Obama either. He has taken it upon himself to make this election a popularity contest. His new ways don’t work and if they did they should have been implimented year one. I say that as of now if we don‘t cut off the head of this beast then we’re moving forward, forward off the cliff. Ryan may be pushing old ladies off cliffs but even four more years of Obama and we’ll all be pushed off the same cliff. I vote no cliff. Kinda hard to do though because no one has the balls to elect someone that will stop this. We’ve proven that.

      On several occasions, Bush warned congress about Freddie and Fannie’s impending meltdown. He was met with scorn and inaction. People seem to forget that during the latter ‘Bush years’, the democrats were in charge of the senate and the house. Everyone should research for themselves how the liberals, especially Frank and Dodd, were hugely responsible for the housing crash and the financial Armageddon that followed.

      That same Socialist party also controlled both houses of congress during BO/BS’s first two years in office. All of the damage to our economy was done during these 4 years. Gas prices are now nearly double when BO/BS took office (must be due to his rich oil buddies)…….millions more are unemployed……..the national debt is now fatally out of control (and still growing)………billions of stimulous dollars were squandered and/or unaccounted for…………the government’s crowning jewel, General Motors, is set to go bankrupt AGAIN……….so yes, we are definitely not better off than we were 4 years ago……..problem is, can we ever recover from this mess? I am doubtful. There are too many losers out there living lift off the government’s failed schemes and they will do ANYTHING to keep it that way. (I have a few relatives that know exactly how to live quite comfortably without a job)

      And please do not forget to give the Democrats under Clinton who in 1995 rewrote the Community Reinvestment Act to which was a Discrimination Card act which led to the permissive lending practices which later led to the Affordable Housing Act fiasco. Oh, our Democrats are crafty in using that Discrimination and Race Card. Ace up their sleeves ALWAYS. Always running the Blame the Banks rhetoric .
