Dem. Rep Gets in Shouting Match With Veteran at Town Hall: ‘Time to Sit Down’

Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) isn’t known for his friendly comments towards veterans. This is no exception.

While at a town hall meeting last night, Moran got into a heated debate with a someone who identified himself as a 27-year veteran. The veteran was visibly upset that Moran was holding a town hall instead of trying to figure out the budget in Washington. While answering that charge, Moran took a shot at the supposed veteran, calling the man’s question “caustic.” That didn’t sit well with the man, who began a heated back-and-forth with Moran (exchange starts at about 4:00):

Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey offers his thoughts:

It’s certainly not a highlight reel for Moran’s concept of constituent services, but running a town-hall meeting does require a little decorum.  The problem is that Moran’s the one who disrupted it.  Moran’s contempt shines through right from the moment he begins speaking, saying, “And if you served your country in the military for 27 years, I thank you for that service, sir.”  Is it so unusual to find a military veteran in Moran’s district that his gratitude has to come with a qualifier?  Does Moran employ the qualifier for veterans who ask questions along the lines of “How can you be so totally awesome and humble at the same time?”  He then insults the constituent by claiming that his question was “caustic” rather than “legitimate,” prompting the veteran to interrupt — and Moran to act like an old schoolmarm when he does.

Morrissey goes on to say that Moran’s town hall was not egregious: the House had already passed a budget, so they were off the hook. But that doesn’t absolve Moran for the way he handled himself. Far from it.

Not just a lack of respect for the military….a total lack of respect for the American people. This is what they think of you and me. The only thing that will get this Congressmans attention is a knuckle sandwich…or worse. Otherwise, expect more of this and worse before its over.

Have you read the ” It doesn’t take a weatherman to tell the weather” by Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorn?
In it they describe how the military can be over extended, sent to many foreign battles simultaneously, and then the radicals will strike here. There intent is to abandon our sons and daughters too there “fates” overseas. If there plan reaches fruition, we will be on our own to defeat these lucifarian servants.

There is no honor in our elected officials in Congress. We are but cattle to them. The only time that we matter is during their election cycles so that they can herd us up to vote them back into office. Truly, the only jobs in America that they are concerned with are their own. It was disgraceful how this elected official responded to this constituent……the question was legitimate…….the answer by the Congressman was rhetorical……the reaction of the audience was pathetic.

If Congress did not pass the budget for 2011, they should start with their own salaries. instead of those with the military, and not be paid until the budget is passed. If Congress should have passed the budget and didn’t, they have not earned their salaries in my opinion.

And to the 27-year veteran in the video: Thank you for your service to our country, Sir. I am sorry that your congressman has no sense of decency or respect for you or our military.

It is not called rapture in the Bible, but it is definitely there that the church, the Kingdom of God, all those who have accepted Christ as their Savior, will be called out of this world and then will come the ushering in of the Tribulation, the AntiChrist and the Beast. The Bible tells us that the world will never have seen the horrible times that are in store for this earth and eventually, Jesus will come himself and destroy the evil of this world which will gather to destroy Israel. We don’t know, Jesus himself, said not even He knew when this would occur only God knows, but He did give us some guidelines and they surely seem to be lining up. There will come a time when the Lord Jesus will rule this earth for a thousand years and Satan will be let lose again to influence mankind. Then this earth will be destroyed by fire and a new heaven and new earth will be created and those who love the Lord will reign with him forever. Even so come Lord Jesus anytime.

Let’s see: graduated 1967 from college, Vietnam was in full swing. No military, grad school instead. Graduated in 1970. Vietnam still going on. No miltary, “public service” instead.

Way to treat your constituents, Mr. Moran!!! Can you figure out why the public has lost(or is losing)faith in their “elected officials”?? The guy asked a pretty damn good question, only to be told his question was “caustic”??? Did he take lessons in sarcasm from Alan Grayson? Anthony Weiner? Or is it just “standard operating procedure” for the democratic party to be rude with the people that elected them!!! Talk about sheer arrogance!

Moran has been holding -Every Evening This Week – Emergency Town Hall: Impact of a Government Shutdown — because the district he represents has 15% Military and 20% Federal families.
He is very concerned with doing for the constituents what can be done, with the cards we are dealt. He does not control the Senate, the President, or the Tea Party. He has to deal with the truth. As a member of the House, the CRs and HRs are already passed, so he has taken to Town Halls at this point. Some times these audiences get disruptive and rude, as we all here well know. 4 minutes does not a town hall make. .

Imagine that. A democrat telling a military vet to shut up and sit down or leave.

I’m surprised that Rep. Moron didn’t tell the vet, “Call me ‘Senator.”

Seems to me that the vet asked a very simple and straight-forward question. Moran became derisive when he couldn’t answer that question in a clear and concise manner.

The American people are tired of equivocation from the establishment.

Democrats are just digging the hole deeper for themselves when they hold townhall meetings. They end up reveaing their condescension for the average citizen, and that will only hurt them in 2012. It must be a character trait of progressives to speak without thinking of the consequences. This Dem totally insulted the military by questioning if this vet was possibly pretending to have served. I think this guy is pretending to be a Representative, and he’s not doing such a hot job of it.

He‘e been holding town hall meetings so he can lie about what’s going to happen when the givernment ‘shuts down’, like it does four months a year every year. BFD- let the dman thing shut down. WOLF – Many Vietnam Vets know It actually took a lot of guts and courage to build our “wall of healing.”
There would have been NO Vietnam Veteran’s memorial without tireless work by true bipartisan patriots, who without reward spent years making this heartwarming tribute a reality, even when Newt Gingrich was against it and killed the original bill. It was Not Easy, it was very controversial at the time, and the memorial Fund Board also included General (USA Ret.) Colin Powell, Charles Mathias and John Warner, all big Republicans at the time.

Isn’t it typical though that half of this country is brain dead? Pick up a copy of Original Intent by David Barton to find out what this country is all about. I can answer your question of why Northern Virginia keeps electing this idiot. First the Military members stationed there are not Virginia Residents so they cannot vote for or against him. Second Liberals that work in D.C. actually reside in Northern Virginia so they elect idiots like this. I know I was stationed in Virginia for a few years and my son is currently stationed at Fort Belvoir and serving in Afghanistan.

It’s past time for veterans and active military to let congress fight the wars for themselves. I served 9 years in the Navy, myself. I’m as “ardent” a patriot as any one. But we aren‘t talking about ’patriotism.’

Although this seems like ‘government as usual’, the fact is for a long time government hasn’t been about “governing” the united States. It has been about personal politics, personal wealth, self aggrandizement, personal idealism and the like.

Patriotism is about ‘what you can do for YOUR COUNTRY.’ Unselfishly, as an American FOR Americans and America. None of this even meets the smell test for such a claim, no matter what the rhetorical context.

Further, few Americans even believe in “America” as it is advertised (historically) any more. Government (politicians) ‘use(s)’ Americans as pawns in their gaming of us and the system for their benefit. And it is blatant and offensive. It makes them look like villains, and they are, but Americans have learned that politicians DO NOT listen. They have contempt for citizens in general and only are in government to satisfy their personal ambitions for wealth and power.

Ruler4You, thanks for your service, and doing 9 years means you reenlisted at least once, maybe more. So you are a true “eyes wide open” Veteran. Good on You.
I assume you also know how a junior officer or enlisted man would have been disciplined enough to avoid the unfortunate exchange between Hot-Head Moran and the Insulted Vet, had this been a military gathering.
It saddens some of us that Hot Air can use this edited piece of a three hour town hall to demonize a man who has done so much for deployed, wounded, and even deceased veterans and their families for ten years, being the Representative for the Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, who has sponsored the Army Ten Miler and the Marine Corps Marathon each and every year since 1998.

SLEAZYHIPPO—Moran might have been well liked by his constituents before this. I cannot see that not changing. As a veteran myself, I was absolutely appalled by his comments to the questioner. He also skirted the issue of his not being in Washington working on the budgetary matters before Congress. He was arrogant. He was rude. It appeared as if he wants to be fawned upon as if he were royalty. We stopped that crap back in ‘76’. Moran oughta run and hide more. He is a disgrace to men, mankind, civil folk, and even Congress as hard as THAT is these days.

This is so typical of the Democrats passing the buck. For the last two years they had a majority in the House, Senate, and of course the Presidency. And they failed to pass a budget. Now, for some really strange reason, it seems to be the fault of the Republicans. Even though the Democrats love to portray themselves as the party of tolerance and bi-partisanship, it is evident they are the party of “My way or the highway”. And you can understand why it is so easy for the Democrats to throw the military under the bus. They hate the military, always have, always will. Of course once they have infiltarted the military with gays and lesbians via the repeal of DADT, they will have a much more compliant voter base in the Armed Forces.

Any one that supports the Democratic Party, you need to be honest and remember that the fiscal year began on October 1st last year. It was Jim Moran’s party who REFUSED TO ACT. They didn’t just FAIL. They REFUSED to act because they wanted this fight to defend their behavior against much more honorable behavior that seeks to cut government spending, the waste, the fraud, the abuse. If you think you can get away with blaming the other party for what they refused to do last year, you’re in for a surprise.

Yes that was for you SleazyHippo. And don‘t be upset when you’re called Sleazy. You picked the name yourself.

Was there a mutual Failure To Listen? Did Both sides know better?
In response to the US Naval War College article, “Arrogance Due to Incompetence” by Christopher J. Dennis, 27 October 2010, Wayne Tunick commented on-line: “Good essay. I would caution recognizing the difference between arrogance and leaders that do not listen or are in transmit mode all the time. Not because they are arrogant, but because they have not developed the ability to listen. A great example is that I have briefed some very senior 4 stars and they will LISTEN to the entire brief before asking a question as opposed to some more junior flags that barrage you with questions on every slide most of which will be answered on the next slide. The biggest difference between my first command and second was that I learned and forced myself to listen because it’s what you learn after you know it all that counts! 11/6/2010 2:45:55 PM”
