Dem Rep. Hoyer Seems Clueless on ‘Sterilization’ Rules for College Students: ‘I Don’t Think Anybody Is Proposing That’

Earlier this week, The Blaze reported about the Obama administration’s alleged concessions on its contraceptive mandate.

In a new proposal (published in the Federal Register today), the government is now offering to allow religious groups to decide which affiliated institutions are “religious” and exempt from the mandate. Additionally, the new proposal seeks to see the same coverage guaranteed to college students as well.

As originally announced, the health care mandate includes (emphasis added) “[a]ll Food and Drug Administration [(FDA)] approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures, and patient education and counseling for all women with reproductive capacity.” But when it comes to sterilizations — an item explicitly mentioned by the government — it seems at least one Democratic leader is unaware that the law he supports mandates they be covered for young people by health insurance companies.

In a bizarre back-and-forth with CNS News, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) seemed confused regarding what, exactly, is covered under the health care regulations he has vocally supported. CNS News has more:

At a pen-and-pad meeting with reporters on Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol, CNSNews.com asked Hoyer: “The administration has approved a regulation under Obamacare that says, quote, ‘all women with reproductive capacity,’ end quote, must be offered free sterilization –”

Hoyer interrupted: “How is that related to a pre-existing condition?”

CNSNews.com continued: “–hold on–free sterilization in their health care plans. Do you support the mandate for free sterilization for college-age women?”

Hoyer said, “Free sterilization? I don’t know anything about free sterilization. I don’t know anything about that. I’m sorry. The answer is, I don’t, but I don’t think anybody is proposing that.”

As CNS notes, the initial press release claims that students will have the same benefits as any other individual under the plan. Thus, it would seem that sterilizations would also be available to college students, should they seek them (after all, university-age women have “reproductive capacity”).

“Under the final rule, students will gain the same consumer protections other people with individual market insurance have, like a prohibition on lifetime limits and coverage of preventive services without cost sharing,” the release reads.

    Why are you surprised Hoyer is not up to speed on any one piece of legislation. Most of the time he and others vote on the POLITICS of a bill instead of what is actually in the bill. Now who decides what the politics will be on any given Bill is left to the party leadership, for members not in a Leadership position they are simply told what their vote should be.

    Remember the media claiming that lobbyists were writing legislation during the Bush administration ?
    If that’s true, at least the Republicans knew what it contained before they passed any of it. Obama legislation, namely Obamacare was written by an ex-con, never read by those pushing it.To this day they have no idea what it will do to our freedoms in the future.

    In the above pictures you’ll notice Hoyer, like so many other democrats of late (Biden, Obumler, Hillary and many more), has his index finger boldly extended like he just picked something (as in going to the opera) and proud apparently wants viewers to enjoy it as much as he does. Judging from the look on Hoyer‘s face he’s smelled his own finger (or something) and finds it rather refreshing, Reid on the other hand has that ‘who cut the cheese’ look on his face, while Barbara Boxer appears to be moving in for her own personal inhaling pleasure.

    I still don’t get the “students and insurance” thing. Does tuition also cover health insurance? Obviously, I am just as clueless as Hoyer.

    As he is my representative in Congress, I find him “Clueless” on most items of importance to America. He is a professional politician who has not held a job outside of the MD Democratic Party and Congress. He is set for life and does as he sees fit.
