Dem. Rep. Moran Walks Out During Interview After Supporting Redistribution of Wealth

Jim Moran has been the center of fireworks before. You may remember that in April the Democratic congressman from Virginia got in a shouting match with an alleged veteran at a town hall meeting, telling the man to “sit down” after he asked a question Moran didn’t like.
So the fact that during an interview last week Moran ripped off his mic and walked off the set of an interview after admitting he approves of redistribution of wealth seems to fit with the Rep’s fiery attitude.
It all happened during an interview with journalist Jan Helfeld. Helfeld initially asked if Moran agreed that the government should protect people from those who want to forcibly take their money. Moran agreed. He then asked if Moran supports redistribution of wealth. Moran launched into an interesting answer, saying “yes” because the wealthy benefit from the government’s investments in things such as infrastructure. When Helfeld decided to ask Moran again about protecting people from others forcibly taking their money, Moran had enough and walked off:
Helfeld is known for his use of the socratic method during interviews, and this is a prime example.
To be fair, it seems that Moran could have given an answer to the initial question that easily justified taxation, and might not have painted himself in a corner. After all, the founders didn’t advocate for no taxes. But that’s not what Moran said. Instead, he took it further, advocating for redistribution of wealth. And when confronted with a second tough question about protecting citizens from those who want to take their money and give it to others, he refused to explain himself.
You can see more Helfeld interviews on his YouTube channel.

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 7:58amThe sad thing is a guy like Moran really doesn’t believe in redistribution of wealth. He’s only saying it because it affects his bottom line in a positive way.

In fact, our Founders spoke about this issue in Federalist Papers #10:
Speaking about the benefits of the republican form of government over a democracy, they said this with regard to factions and collectivists:
Federalist Papers #10
http://constitution.org/fed/federa10.htm
“The influence of factious leaders may kindle a flame within their particular States, but will be unable to spread a general conflagration through the other States. A religious sect may degenerate into a political faction in a part of the Confederacy; but the variety of sects dispersed over the entire face of it must secure the national councils against any danger from that source. A rage for paper money, for an abolition of debts, FOR AN EQUAL DIVISION OF PROPERTY, OR FOR ANY OTHER IMPROPER OR WICKED PROJECT, will be less apt to pervade the whole body of the Union than a particular member of it; in the same proportion as such a malady is more likely to taint a particular county or district, than an entire State.”

That is why Socialism always leads to moral, economic and physical death, e. g., Soviet Russia, Communist China, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Cuba, Vietnam, Cambodia and even the “Social Democratic” countries of Europe, including England. We need a return to the principle of Subsidiarity which is enshrined in the Constitution, especially in the 10th Amendment. Jesus stood for not hoarding money. Capitalism promotes and encourages the hoarding or money – it is therefore juxtaposed to the teachings of Christ. If you believe American can be a Christian nation and a Capitalist nation you are either foolish or blind.
I don’t redistribute my wealth since I have no wealth – I am 55,000 dollars in debt thanks to Graduate School. Do not pitty me, for I am rich with health, family, and common sense.
That aside, I am not even for “redistribution of wealth” I am for “fair taxes”. Here are some figures
The top 1% have over 42% of all the money yet only pay 38% of the taxes… explain? The top 10% have 93% of all the wealth yet only pay 70% of the taxes. That means 90% of the population which has only 7% of economic wealth to work with pays 30% of the country’s taxes.
Hence why Obama wants to raise Taxes for the highest salary earners – because they pay the least relative to what they make.

That makes them all hypocrites and full of sh**. “Socialism is for the people, not the socialist!” (Andrew Wilkow). I would despise rich liberals much less if they simply paid their taxes using the 1040 EZ and took no deductions. I realize that one can’t file with the 1040 EZ with a certain income level, but one isn’t forced to take deductions, or lookbacks for that matter, but you know the sumbi*ches do. If you want to hoard it you can, if you want to invest it you can, if you want to give it all to charity you can, or if you want to waist it you can. It’s not capitalism that is bad its what people do with it. Just like cars are not bad in and of themselves. We shouldn’t say cars are evil because someone decided to run over and kill someone else. We – for the most part – agree. The only difference being I believe there is a certain minimum required to live (minimum wage) lets call it 15,000 a year. The first 15,000 you make (or whatever the minimum is) should be untaxed, every dollar thereafter yeah 25% – sure. Basically yes, all people should pay the same percentage in tax; I agree!
The problem is that the wealthiest Americans pay the LEAST percentage of tax (not by tax bracket, but Bush Era tax cuts, loop holes, and write off). When Obama talks about increasing the tax for wealthy Americans he means make them ACTUALLY PAY an equal percentage.
If my stats are true (which I believe they are since I have yet to find conflicting numbers and I challenge you to prove me wrong), the top 10% have 93% of the money and only pay 70% of the taxes. Statistically speaking, if everyone paid an equal percentage then if they have 93% of the money they would pay 93% of the taxes.
So, if you think everyone should pay equal tax relative to income then you agree with Obama that we should increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans. true?
And you are correct about Capitalism, it is not necessarily the same as money hoarding; I have just been jaded by the world in which I live.

We need to get the ones not paying to pay and equalize the amount the high earners pay so they all pay the same percentage. We cant let the 40% not pay and charge the ‘rich’ more, thats redistribution, they all need to pay. Get rid of tax brackets. Anyway, we don’t really have a revenue problem anyway. I am sure you agree the government has a major spending problem.

That goes back to the idea of minimum standard of living. Whatever minimum wage is working full time – lets say 15K annually – is untaxed. The government decided that it takes one person 15K to survive in the America and therefore, if that’s all you make, you aren’t taxed. The reason 40% of Americans aren’t paying taxes is because they ARE BARELY SURVIVING. If they started taking money from the 40% that can hardly afford eating three times a day it would not only be the greatest travesty this nation has ever faced, it would surely lead to an uprising from the bottom up.
You know what an uprising from the bottom up is called? Communism.

Making some pay and others not is not a ‘fair tax’.

Why should we give the government more to spend when they already don’t spend what they have in a good way?
We need to cut spending way down before we even consider raising taxes. When you max out your credit card your not going to get an increase in credit. you must cut your spending. What applies to the common household should apply to government too.

If you barely have enough money to pay for food how can the government expect you to pay taxes. I said three posts earlier that I think it should be a flat tax for every dollar made BEYOND THE MINIMUM. You should not be taxed on money required to sustain your well being, you should be taxed on superfluous income. And I agree, it shouldn’t matter HOW MUCH superfluous income you have, every dollar not deemed “necessary for survival” should be taxed the same whether you have 100 of them or 100 million of them.
I believe all people have a right to not only pursue happiness, but to have the means to achieve it. That means you should have a right to steady income, food on the table, a home, and good health. Taxing people who can barely meet these minimums is an impeachment of what should be the rights of everyone. You know who would agree with me? Franklin D. Roosevelt!

If you want to consider me a socialist that’s fine – but just realize that socialism is not an un-American idea by the simple fact that Capitalism is NOT an American idea.
I will, however, contest that everyone (you included) has a little socialism in them. Being forced to pay for police protection – Socialism. Being taxed for anything you don’t currently use (the military, medicare, social security, paying politicians, etc) that’s all Socialism. You are being forced to put money into a system that is benefiting your common man. Really the entire idea of Insurance (car, life, health, home, etc) is a Socialist idea – though today it has been privatized and exploited by capitalist corporations, but that’s another story.
You want a truly Capitalist society? It’s not possible; it’s anarchical. What you are really petitioning for is a regulated amount of Socialism and it is simply MY contention that the “line in the sand” you have drawn in regards to the acceptable bounds of Socialism’s influence are entirely arbitrary [as are my own].
What it comes down to is a difference of opinion, and that’s ok. I am just so tired of people on this site screaming “Socialist!” without actually grasping it‘s definition and simultaneously overly grasping the false notion that it’s somehow juxtaposed to American ideology.
Capitalism is as much American as Air and Socialism is as much un American as Water. Doesn’t make sense? Now you’re getting it…

It’s way too easy for career politicians to spend OUR money when they think there are no repercusions to them. I say TAX all politicans at 70% ( if they have a net worth over 2 million), harkening back to their hero Woodrow Wilson. Tax the RICH — uhhh that would be them, but you know they will vote themselves a “loophole” or a special tax credit!!!
I say tie their pay and benefits to a GDP factor and SS cola! Career politicians and the Federal Reserve have ruined this country!!!

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 6:12pmactually there is already a limit on how long they can serve:
Section 2 – The HouseThe House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature.Section 3 – The SenateThe Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, (chosen by the Legislature thereof,) for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote.
some how they changed it no where does it say they can serve more than one term, perhaps all we need to do is follow the Constitutions for relief.

The problem is that the middle class in America is dying, but not from paying taxes (which are at an post-WW2 low) but from stagnating wages (which have not increased since the 70s) and the increasing inability to form proper unions or outright hostility to them (See: Wisconsin). A third world country consists of a huge underclass and a few rich people who exploit that underclass and we’re quickly getting there, but for totally different reasons than you mention.
Riddle me this: Why do other countries with MUCH higher taxes and a much better social safety net also have a much more stable (and way larger) middle class than the US?

Oh that‘s right you can’t understand logic and reason or facts and history. You just understand vacuous ideas and ambiguous words like “civilized”. “Civilized” in your sense of the word means a ruined, end stage civilization like Rome, when all the people were so “civilized” that they had no morals and lived off the public feeding trough. What? You’ve never heard of a place called “Rome”? I didn’t think so.

News flash: The political class and their bedfellows. That would be the politicians, the unions, Wallstreet and the chosen corporations like GE. Can’t leave out those corporate subsidiaries like NBC and the rest of the old school media.
