Dem Senator: Hitler, Stalin, GOP and Karl Rove All Hate Unions

Taking to the Senate floor Thursday to defend America’s labor unions Thursday, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, claimed the Republican Party and conservatives were working to outlaw unions, pit workers against one another and compared the GOP to “some of the worst governments we’ve ever had,” including the brutal regimes of Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin.

“As a nation, I look back in history and some of the worst governments we’ve ever had, you know one of the the first thing they did? They went after the trade unions,” Sherrod said. “Hitler didn’t want unions, Stalin didn’t want unions. [Former Egyptian President Hosni] Mubarak didn’t want independent unions.”

He then tried to clarify his remarks, claiming he wasn’t comparing the debate in Wisconsin to Hitler and Stalin, “but I am saying that history is teaching us that unions are a very positive force in society that creates a middle class and protects our freedom,” he said.

“We’ve seen a real play on fear. They’re trying to pit the private sector workers against the public-sector workers,” Sherrod continued. “That is the most base Karl Rove-type politics to turn working-class people one against another.”

Sherrod’s heated rhetoric comes as protests continue against “anti-union” bills being considered by a number of state legislatures, most notably in Wisconsin where Democrats have fled the state rather than participate in an up-or-down vote. GOP-backed bills in those states seek to limit public employees’ ability to collectively bargain with the state to help cut costs.

The inflammatory rhetoric doesn’t stop with Sherrod, however.  Earlier this week, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., claimed that abolishing collective bargaining rights was akin to re-instituting slavery.

“Collective bargaining is something that is so close to slavery in terms of abolishing it, that it is not an American concept to tell people that they cannot discuss their economic position,” Rangel said Monday.

When will the ‘left’ understand that it is not “unions” that we are against. It is the power that they wield over their members and, consequently, over all American workers. There are simple remedies to this that I believe most conservatives would embrace:.
    1) Make union membership voluntary, not mandatory. If workers are truly free they should have a choice. I believe that most workers would choose not to pay union dues and not to have their dues money used to promote the political power of their ‘leaders’.
    2) Public sector unions should not be allowed to bargain collectively. This is a glaring conflict of interest and should not be allowed.
Of course, these two simple remedies would take a large degree of power away from the unions and that power what they are trying desparately to maintain. , .

Unions were needed 20 maybe even 30 years ago. Now days they are only needed to over pay poor preforming employees or protect their jobs. Unions are equal to socialists and communists. They don’t believe in freedom anymore. I used to work in a place where I was forced to be part of a union. I was questioned why I drove a non-American car. I said because the US cars were priced too high because their union members were given to many benefits! I also went on to tell my union rep to mind his damn own business and do his damn job. I went on to tell this little union nazi, “I pay you it’s not the other way around, you work for me!”

History lesson boys and girls.. Both Lenin, and Hitler, used unions as a springboard to power always promising their leadership roles in government etc. It was after they seized absolute power they went after the unions, murdered the leadership, and turned to slave labor for their own ambitions.. Its like being institutionalize. I’m self employed and loving every minute of it. I get paid based on my performance. Unions workers promote laziness, the old saying they like using “Fair day pay for a fair day wages”. What a dinosaur type of business model, suppressing the worker.

Thus far unions have eroded our industries, our schools, our public services… and saddled our governments with huge wasteful expenditures that taxpayers cannot control or afford. Unions keep the incompetent and the corrupt on the job, while handing out wild benefits that mock the true middle class. Thugs who represent these unions spew hatred, coerce and violently demonstrate in the name of fair wages and benefits, but their actions befit Hitler’s Brown Shirts. Unions seek only power, at the expense of our industrial prominence, our morality and our rule of law. We the people have become slaves to the unions.

I had a very hard time getting him to see any other viewpoint. I am a staunch conservative, and I think the thing that resonated with him the most was when I said:

“Dad, you are conservative in EVERY way, except the way you vote.”

Steve, it takes about a hear and a half for “denial” to be recognized as “not working” as a defense mechanism. I know how you feel, and I am sorry for your pain.

I was in the grocery store one afternoon and just burst into tears. The manager of the store was the father of one of the girls in my scout troop, and he came over to comfort me. I told him that my father had died and I’d just realized that he was never coming back. He asked, “Wasn’t it about a year and a half ago?” He told me that it takes about that long, but now that I have had “the good cry,” it won’t ever be as bad again. He was right. My daddy died in 1975.

      Rangel said:

“Collective bargaining is something that is so close to slavery in terms of abolishing it, that it is not an American concept to tell people that they cannot discuss their economic position”

NO ONE is saying that people can’t associate or form economic groups in the private sector to try to collectively bargain with employers. NO ONE. But in a free society, employers ought not be required to choose from such a collective, and instead may choose someone who will work for less, or work in less “safe” or accommodating working conditions.

When an employer’s working conditions actually harm someone, THAT is when the courts should be used, and unless the employer is found guilty, they ought not be penalized, or dissuaded from continuing to run their business as they see fit.

The public sector, however, where we have a representative Republic, and separate branches, and laws against nepotism (of which Unions would be a form), does not Constitutionally allow Unionized public workers. Remember that the role of government is to facilitate private sector interests – everything for the benefit of the private sector, or, as the Founders stated “governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed”.

These two are serving the purpose of showing the general public what this country will become if we sit by and let unions dictate what is taught in our public schools. In Texas they “discuss” whether creationism should be included and how much history should be taught; in New York, they indoctrinate via Van Jones that the police are the enemy and the purveyors of torture; in Illinois, they used a heavily socialized version of the Constitution to inculcate socialist values in the children. (It is interesting to note that this is done through chanting over and over again. This is the same method employed in many Islamic countries to teach the Koran. Hmmmmmmmmmm!)

I’ve said this over in the Yahoo news comment section. You have options to negotiate your economic terms; at the time of employment. Your salary, benefits, vacation time, even raise schedule is/should be discussed and negotiated at this time. Once you move forward as an employee, you are done. You can petition for a raise. If your performance justifies it, you get one. If it doesn’t, you don’t. If it does justify a raise or better benefits, and you don’t get it, then you give them your two week notice and find a new job. Those are your options. You are not entitled to force an employer to pay you more.

      @jzs,

“The Constituition specifically prohibits the government from preventing groups like the Tea Party from forming, associating and making demands with a single voice. The Constitution guarantees that same right for any group.”

You’re right about everything except the last sentence.

As individuals, we can choose to group with whoever we want. But the reason your last statement is false is because the Constitution recognizes that all men are created equal – no one individual is more special than another, which naturally transcends any group identity. There are no Constitutional group rights, only individual rights.

What this means for employers is that it is their right, as individuals, to refuse to choose from among those belonging to a group, qua group, and instead choose an employee from among citizens who do not belong to a particular group.

Government Unions are outright unConstitutional due to the separation of powers and laws against nepotism.

If Charlie’s logic was correct, he should have said that the majority of Americans are already slaves. He needs to wrangle his thoughts better.

Actually whats I feel is wrong about the Unions are the leadership and where the Union money goes. I feel the union workers are being used by the big boys leadership.

a tea-****** that supports Hitler and Stalin, Showtime. I always knew the tea-baggers were the modern brown shirts, thanks for confirming it.]

Showtime is NOT part of any Tea-Party I know of. Union workers are all very good people, I’m one of them!! What our Union(s) do with our money is a whole different story. And speaking of brown shirts, I think the only person I have heard talking about anything close to that was B.O. when he said, ‘we need a civilian army larger than [our combined forces]‘, Why don’t you get Katie Couric to ask Mr. President about that …. and while you’re at it, ask to see if we could see some of his locked up papers, social sec. number, b. cert (long form), some papers he wrote, some school records. Oh well, details right.
