Democrat Congresswomen Storm Out of Contraception Hearing Claiming Sexism

Democrat Representatives Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Eleanor Norton (D-DC) decided to protest the absence of female witnesses at a hearing over the President’s contraception hearing today by removing two women — themselves — from the room.
The hearing before the Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), evidently angered the two Congresswomen by booking only male witnesses (this included witnesses on the liberal side of the issue). As a result, they decided to leave the room rather than stay and express the feminine viewpoint they apparently thought the hearing was lacking. Politico reports on the odd — and somewhat self-defeating — incident:
“What I want to know is, where are the women?” asked Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) before walking out. “I look at this panel [of witnesses], and I don’t see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventive health care services, including family planning.”
Maloney had urged Chairman Issa to accept just one female witness — a Law student at Georgetown University — to testify. They claimed the fact that Georgetown was a Catholic university and this student was being provided care by said university meant that she could be deprived of contraception if not for the administration’s mandate. Issa declined to allow the witness in, claiming she was irrelevant to the hearing, which was not about contraception, but about religious freedom — a subject that a Law student was not qualified to discuss with authority. The women scorned did not react well. Maloney walked out, only to sneak back in later. Norton wasn’t quite so easily silenced:
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) attempted to force a vote on seating Fluke, saying the chairman was breaking committee rules. When he ignored her motion, Norton and Maloney walked out. Maloney later returned. Norton did not.
Norton accused Issa of “pretzel turning of the rules so as to deny us a witness” in a press conference convened in the hallway. She said the hearing was “the kind you expect in an autocratic regime.”
The law student in question — Sandra Fluke — also didn’t go down fighting, claiming a friend of hers had died because of lack of access to contraception, and accusing Issa of silencing the very people with the most authority to talk about the subject.
“I feel that the women this affects are the most qualified to speak on this matter,” Fluke said.

“The young college student claims that her friend died from not having contraception…”
From the Huffington Post:
“Fluke began to cry as she told the story of her 32-year-old friend who was diagnosed with ovarian cysts and prescribed birth control pills as the only remedy for her condition that could save her from becoming infertile. Because her student insurance did not cover contraception, Fluke’s friend could not afford her medication, and she eventually lost her ovary and began experiencing symptoms of early menopause.”
I’m assuming this is talking about the same person this site said died, which I’m assuming is untrue.

No, that’s wrong Blaze. Please try to do better in the future!
Issa held a hearing to discuss the administration decision that requires insurance companies to provide prescription birth control drugs to women. The rule doesn’t apply to churches that offer health insurance but does church affiliated organizations. He had 10 witnesses, most of them male, all of whom were against the decision. Let me say that again. Issa had 10 people speak at his “hearing” and every single one of these “witnesses” was against the decision. Every single one. And he refused to allow one single – let’s says that again: “one single” – person to speak in favor of the decision.
Please people, keep up. This is political theatre at its worse, created for no other purpose that to get on the news. He should be ashamed and feel remorse, but he doesn’t. No shame.

The only political theatre going on is the farce that is the liberal manufactured hysteria that conservatives want to ban contraception, an idea that was made up out of thin air. If she ever could get that perpetual scowl off of her face, she would be a decent looking women, but since the scowl is almost perpetually there, she has a regular case of the uglies.
As been said innumerable times, it’s not about birth control. It is about religious liberties, which the Dumocrats do not like to have the real issue displayed, because they lose on it every time.
If our Republican leadership should ever get some balls and backbone, we might start winning on the issues that we should be winning.

They have all of their buddies in the media working on it, and it sounds like you are one of the stupid people buying into it. As far as the real issue goes, I missed the part where the “right to free contraception” was covered by the constitution and I also missed the part where the president could mandate that a private company provide a service free of charge. Is Obama able to mandate that McDonald’s give hamburgers away for free? Can Obama decide that we are all entitled to free cars and homes under the constitution? No, he can’t, despite what he thinks or tries to do. Our will is stronger than yours, and, believe me when I say, we outnumber you. We will win this war, because that’s exactly what it is. This hearing (no matter what it was called) was the beginning of a process to KILL ‘Griswold vs Connecticut’ which was adjucated back by the Supreme Court back in 1965!
There is currently a bill that Senator Roy Blunt is trying to put thru the Senate which would allow ANY employer – anywhere – to refuse to have their employees health insurance cover whatever that said employer didn’t like. That could be anything from contraceptives to heart pills to inhalers for asthmatics. Yes, you can Google these things. I don’t think you are very well informed. You obviously believe that contraceptives are used ONLY for birth control. The young woman you are referring to was unable to get the contracepting medicine she needed to prevent endometrial growths. As it turns out those growths developed and she had surgery to have an ovary removed and began menapause BEFORE she was 30 and now with NO CHANCE of ever becoming a mother.
There are many MEDICAL reasons for using contraceptives in todays world for reasons which used to kill woman – from their teens to menapause. Is that what you want for your sister, daughter or friend??
Meanwhile MEN’s true birth control will still be paid for by the insurance company – and with public funding (vasectomy) – but I dont’ hear anyone griping about that. I also don‘t hear anyone complaining that the Viagra’s of the medical world be taken off ANY insurance policy. Why is that? Doesn’t God also give men their abiliity – or inability – to produce a pregnancy??

Here is the issue, the mandate does not require churches to purchase birth control, it requires affiliated institutions to provide THE OPTION for women who work for them. I went to med school with a Jewish girl who works for a Catholic church, why is she subjected to her employers religious ideals. When the Supreme Court ruled that public funds can NOT be used for programs focusing on certain religions, the Catholic church said their hospitals are secular, allowing them to receive federal funding. They can’t claim to be secular to receive funds and then decry their religious objections, when they find it convienant to do so. If they do not want to provide the OPTION, that is fine, but they should not get any federal funding. Any organization that accepts federal funds is required to adopt certain policies, they can’t have it both ways.

Why should the government interfere with that relationship—dictating what those services or wages should be? If it was not wholly to her liking, why did she enter into it?

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 8:47pmThe catholic church has claimed their hospitals are completely secular in order to get federal funding. Yes, she entered into a contract but that was before a mandate was going to be in place. Restricting access to contraceptives is now illegal, when tenets of contracts are deemed illegal, it is void. She pays as all women do, for coverage, only it is in the form of a lower salary, why is she restricted on something she pays for, when others are not, based on their sex. I have no problem with them not offering it, but they should not be entitled to federal funding based on their claim that their hospital is not an extension of the church, which it clearly is.

What right does the government have to declare any part of a voluntary contract illegal and therefore void? Please show me in the Constitution where Congress or the President are granted this power.

The government subsidizes hospitals. If the hospital accepts taxpayer money, why shouldn’t it have to accept the applicable laws?

The issue is religious freedom, and these two socialists know it. This is a typical tactic of the progressives…trying to turn a hearing about one issue into a completely different issue.
Deamonize and marginalize. Pure Saul Alinsky.
The only thing I will say is that the Catholics are a bit confusing to me.
First… they are supposedly against abortion. That is not reality, as I know contraceptive use is widespread among Catholics.
Second, anyone with any sense knows that around 50% of Catholics voted for Obama and, let me add….I know the Catholic vote will go to Obama in large enough nymbers to get him re-elected.
Of course, Eric “my people” Holders’ DOJ will help things along with large numbers of illegal votes.

Report Post »This article smells so bad of BS. So let me get this straight…. The ONLY thing that could help this woman’s condition was a birth control pill???? There was no other medication that wouldn’t be classified as a birth control (or contraceptive) drug that WOULD be covered by her insurance??? I find this VERY hard to believe and since all we have is Huffpo’s article, I‘m going to choose to believe that it’s all BS. Anything I’ve seen on the Huffington Post has been mostly half-truths, lies and deceptions designed to promote Democratic bull and the Marxist commie Progressive agenda.
Nick84
Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:58pmJeetman-
I’m not a physician, so I honestly couldn’t tell you if there was another pill that could have helped her. However, if she was going to testify before the House with this issue, I’d like to imagine she could provide evidence. Secondly, you don’t seem to deny that birth control could have helped her. If it was a possible medication in this case, and is most likely cheaper than other medications, why shouldn’t her doctor be able to prescribe it and have her medical insurance cover it, since it is a medical issue. I doubt that this woman would let them remove her ovaries if there was a reasonable alternative (including another pill covered by her insurance).
The last point I would like to touch on is the fact that you completely dismiss The Huffington Post’s article, while being a member of The Blaze, which is rife with errors, as clearly demonstrated by the contradiction between their version of the story (the woman’s friend died) and the truth (had her ovaries removed).
