GOP Candidate Slams Opponent Over ‘Constitution Is Wrong’ Statement

During a debate Wednesday evening at a local high school with his Republican opponent, Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., weighed in with his opinion on the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission.

In the past, the court has ruled that monetary campaign donations are an extension of individuals’ First Amendment constitutional right to free speech, but McGovern shocked some in the audience when he said, “the Constitution is wrong.”

“We have a lousy Supreme Court decision that has opened the floodgates, and so we have to deal within the realm of constitutionality. And a lot of the campaign finance bills that we have passed have been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. I think the Constitution is  wrong. I don’t think that money is the same thing as human beings. I don’t think money equals free speech. I don’t think corporations should have the same equality as a regular voter in this district.”

It may be that the Congressman meant to say that the Supreme Court was wrong.  Did he misspeak?

McGovern’s Republican opponent, Marty Lamb, doesn’t seem to think so. He quickly issues press release:

Tonight, Marty Lamb, Republican candidate for Congress in Massachusetts Third District, was shocked at Congressman James McGovern’s words and his attitude toward the U.S. Constitution.

During the debate Congressman McGovern stated, “the Constitution is wrong,” when questioned about campaign finance. Congressman McGovern does not seem to believe in the First Amendment-the freedom of speech.

“I am deeply troubled by the Congressman’s statement. I don’t think that Jim McGovern is smarter than our forefathers. I support the first amendment. In fact, I support all the amendments,” said Lamb. “The first action a Congressman takes is an oath is to uphold the Constitution. This oath should not be taken lightly.”

McGovern has represented Massachusetts’ 3rd Congressional District in since 1997.

If you don’t believe in the Constitution that you swore to uphold, please, don’t take office and try to destroy it. The American people deserve better. We deserve elected officials that believe in the Constitution and it’s greatness and ability to rule the land. It is the Supreme Law of the Land and should be respected as such. It is not a “living” document. It is not up for interpretation on how you feel it should be.

Well Jimmy. Can I call ya Jimmy? It sure didn’t seem to matter when the corporations were donating all that money to the Democrats. Are the Unions human beings? Is Move On. Org, a human being? The Govt. bailed GM out with tax payer money and they contributed to the
Democrats. Where are ya on that one Jimbo?

Is the Democratic Party that desperate? They have accused the US Chamber of Commerce for spending foreign money on campaigns. They have attacked Karl Rove and Mark Levin. Now this.

I have seen that a lot of campaign donations are in amounts smaller than $100.00. People are contributing to campaigns for people all over the country, not just their local races.

    It’s called freedom of speech.

Of course, when businesses pony up to fight for their very survival against the Obama campaign against free enterprise and private business, the left falls all over themselves to scream “it’s not fair, make them stop!” But, when they are the recipients of undisclosed monies from Unions and the like, all is fair in love and war! Such hypocrites and unabashed liars… it’s disgusting to think anyone would ever want someone to represent them who stands for nothing, especially principles and honor, like the left and some of the right!

I say throw them all out, who don’t stand for our Constitution. If we don’t follow the Constitution, then we are lawless and stand for nothing!

If you can’t understand why the Constitution is immovable and unwavering in its intent, then you are a flawed human being who doesn’t understand history. If the Constitution changes with whoever comes into power, then our Constitutional Republic becomes a strict democracy where the majority rules whenever the majority changes, instead of a blind law who favors nobody – theoretically, anyway.

We are not perfect, but, the framework and intention is as close to perfect as any document ever written by man. WE must be vigilant as citizens to make our country the best it can be by the rule of law. When we see a biased law, we must change it to assure the law is blind and unbiased.

Wake up, left, because you will not always be in power and if law can be changed to fit the whims of those in power, you may not like the consequences! Of course, then you would scream…”make the bad man stop, it’s not fair! You must be racist and stupid!”

Then again, these days giving your word in politics comes with about the same intensity of software asking you to agree to read a document to get the update. Almost everyone does a Pelosi and scrolls to the bottom where you can finally click on “I agree” and worry about the consequences later.

I have seen the flag at a yard sale two years ago laid out on the ground and a sign saying “free to stomp upon it” but thankfully the vets in the area bought it and flew it for many days across the street PROUDLY!!!

      @ angry mob,

I understand, I don’t hate them but they do scare me. And your right they are hard to understand, it’s all about power, because they force this stuff on us and omit themselves. They feel we are here to serve them, that our money is theirs. If they really cared as much as they want to make us think they do, then Obama wouldn’t have stopped the voucher program in D.C. schools which was highly successful and one of the first things he did after taking office.

We have spent so much time numbing our brains with mindless tv programs (I must admit that at one time I was one of them) and not paying attention to who is running the country or how they are doing it. If they think they will get something for nothing, then that is the person to vote for.

How many ‘man on the street’ interviews have you seen where Americans can’t tell who the Vice President is when shown a picture. Hopefully more of us will wake up and stay awake, guarding our freedom with knowledge and spreading the word. My mother used to tell me that the two things you don’t discuss is religion and politics, how wrong is that!!

McGovern should once in awhile actually “read the Constitution” and then maybe he could actually understand what free speech is all about. Progressives will stop at nothing to use the courts and the law for their own agenda but the instant something turns out against them – they scream “Its wrong, Its wrong, wrong, wrong…”

I may not agree much at times with the supreme court, or many of their decisions, he states that a lot of campaign reform bills have been declared Unconstitutional. In that case, look to those that HAVE BEEN declared constitutional and do as the Constitution allows for; change the legislation and see how it will stand up in the light of the Constitution itself.

America is not perfect, yet we do manage to get most of it right, most of the time.

@Huckabee – either way, the guy is still a tool. What is the Supreme Court’s function in this matter? To determine whether a piece of legislation meets the test of constitutionality. How do they do it? By reading and interpreting the constitution. They did so, and found that the law did not comport with the requirements of the first amendment to the constitution. He said exactly what he meant, and he meant what he said. Just like Phil “I’m not worried about the constitution on this” Hare said when talking about Obamacare.
