Democratic Party Platform Committee Backs Same-Sex Marriage for the First Time

DETROIT (AP) — The national Democratic Party’s platform committee endorsed gay marriage Saturday for the first time and called for the repeal of a federal law that recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman.

The committee, meeting in downtown Detroit, let stand the work of a separate group that drafted the platform two weeks ago in Minneapolis. The platform is a broad statement of the party’s priorities on the economy, social issues and national defense and next goes to the national convention in North Carolina in September.

Scott Dibble, a committee member and a state senator from Minnesota, said support for gay marriage can attract new voters.

“Young people are looking for a political home right now. This has become a defining moral question of our time,” said Dibble, who is gay.

The platform says Democrats support “marriage equality” and the “movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples.”

“We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference,” the platform says.

In May, President Barack Obama said he personally supported gay marriage.

“This certainly been a journey for many people in this country, a journey for our president,” Dibble told fellow committee members from across the country.

The platform also calls for repeal of a 1996 law, signed by Democratic President Bill Clinton, which recognizes marriage as between a man and woman. Some federal courts have struck it down as unconstitutional.

Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker, co-chairman of the platform committee, said there are “profound indignities” heaped on people who can’t marry someone of the same sex.

“At the end of the day it’ll maybe repel some and attract others to be more engaged,” Booker told reporters, referring to the platform plank. “This campaign is not going to turn on gay marriage. This campaign is going to turn on who has the best ideas for the economy.”

    This has become a defining moral question of our time,” ????? I would rather see the defining moral question of our time to be that all politicians and their supporters tell the TRUTH. The Morman Harry Reids, the Elizabeth (Poca-pow-wow) Warrens, the David (say anything) Axelrod, the Whats-her-name Shultz and the rest (including some Republicans) need to start being honest with the American public. How about a constitutional amendment that states that in addition to the current oath of office, add the phrase “and ANY comment, speech or other communication I make will be the TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH, AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, and subject to all applicable perjury laws.

      They set up special classes of people!
      It costs you more to send your children to school then an illegal would IF they paid
      You pay for them to eat, sleep, go to hospital, get social security, and on it goes.
      Then they tell you we are working hard for you to be able to work, all the while bringing in illegals to water down the pool, so you do not have jobs. And surprise we are going to make
      sure your energy costs go through the roof and you can not afford it.
      All the while they have a jobs council headed up by a guy that sends thousands of jobs overseas and his company pays no taxes which has not met in over six months. We shut down divisions at NASA and pay an overseas company to place our astronauts – that would be Russia.
      This is happening now not 10 years ago.

      The best thing that could happen for GOP. The consensus, is that more Americans oppose Gay marriage, then support it. By advocating Gay Marriage, the Dem’s have cut their own throats, and probably gave the election to Romney. America vetoed Obama care, and he pushed it thru, and now we have Gay marriage. When will politicians learn, and smell the coffee,? America has spoken, and they believe in traditional marriage. My own personal viewpoint, is, if it fits your lifestyle, go for it, as long as it does not tread on my individual liberty.

      Your numbers aren’t findable at any library or website because you made them up. Evey public opinion poll since 2001 has recorded a 51% support for gay marriage for anyone born after 1981. Y’all are just going to have to give up on this issue, it’s a losing fight. Young people don’t care about who other people want to marry, just curmudgeons who read very conservative websites. You can look it up for yourself, unlike bull crap studies that site one poll, the numbers I’m giving are from hundreds of different polls.

First this very very small overly vocal minority will now employ the services of wedding planners followed by divorce lawyers.       If you are under 25 and are not a Democrat, you have no heart.

      Of course 51% of people 26 OR LESS are for gay marriage…they are brainwashed and flooded with being PC pro-gay! Then they venture away from school influences of their professors and teachers and then get a taste of the real world, (IF they do not run to nanny government and suck on the teet of welfare crying like a three year old over the travesties of the world till they’re dust), they eventually get a paycheck, where they question why are they losing 30-40% to FICA, etc. when those questions are answered honestly, then a die hard Democrat starts thinking more like a Republican.

      AND when they become “educated” in the real world, they start to notice things like abuse of civil rights, and “protected groups” and begin to question them, when they are confronted with accusations of hate, they become defensive and then silently express their beliefs in the voting booth. I‘m not sure of the numbers of this and it’s really impossible to know but most young people aren‘t liberal or conservative they don’t give a crap about anything and this is probably how it should be. Secondly, the vast amount of people over the age of “25” or whatever number you want to come with who are Liberal completely debunk that little saying, who I didn’t notice if you attributed to Winston Churchill. Truth is most normal people aren’t conservative or liberal, like I consider myself.       Government is involved in marriage in so far as it involves contract law & at times as wards of the state for children (going back to at least Charlemagne’s time 1,300 years ago).

      You are trying to treat others not as equal. What‘s worse is you’re trying to do that based off of a religious belief.

      Many people are voting against gay marriage purely because of their belief in the Bible. Therefore, you are using your holy book to create legislation.

      This is America based around a secular law, not biblical law.

      Homosexuals aren’t subject to your holy book
      Non Chritsians aren’t subject to your holy book.

      If your religious belief says you are against gay marriage, that is fine, then don’t marry someone of the same sex. You don’t get to pass laws based on your holy book.

      If you want to live in a theocracy where laws are based around what the Bible says, there are other countries that you can move to.

      The argument that this is a personal contract by 2 people only is a fallacy. It is a contract that 2 people decide to enter into that determines how the rest of society relates to those people. Married people have certain benefits from society and the government which is why many are fighting for homosexual marriage in the first place. Whether for it or against it, it is a fallacious argument to suggest this will only effect the 2 people getting married. It WILL effect the entire society in many various forms and fashions forcing people to recognize something that their religious sensitivities would not agree with as an institution. Lawsuits will be forthcoming and many will be forced to pick between the laws of man and the laws of God as has already been demonstrated in several instances nationwide. Thank you….

      @Kryptonite, If anything it strengthens our argument that Romney and Obama are the same. They BOTH believe they should be able to dictate marriage when there is no authority at all in the Constitution to do so. The bottom line is people that think the federal government should establish rules for marriage are progressives. Homosexuals aren’t depriving anyone else of their liberty, so why can’t you just mind your own business? I don‘t believe there’s enough evidence to suggest that children of gay couples suffer in anyway because the people raising them are gay. Have you seen any studies that conclude this? It‘s not that I’m a huge fan of homosexuality. The thought of the act itself is gross to me. I just don’t hate the people that feel differently about it though. Putting pineapple on pizza is gross to me as well, but there are good people that like it.

      They went to state or local court. Either that or they went to Main Street at high noon. So yeah they usually resolved it in some sort of government court.

      Given the full faith & credit clause of the government where one state has to recognize another states marriage license it becomes a federal issue at some point. the founding fathers never thought the gays would get married. In the Continental army they literally drummed out a gay officer. That ought to tell you something of the times. Von Steuben may have been gay but he must not have flaunted it during his tenure with the army.

      According to Wikipedia, it is just as I said, “warm-blooded animals”, but I’ve only ever heard of it in mammals. Wikipedia goes on to say, “birds have only been known to be infected in experiments.” It gives no mention of aquatic mammals.

      As such, I would expect aquatic mammals like whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea lions, seals, and polar bears would be just as much subject to a rabies infection as dogs, cats, raccoons, and people. I think the issue that largely insulates them from contracting rabies is their environment. There just aren’t that many mammals per square mile of the ocean or arctic as there are on land. An infected sea lion, on its own, would be scarcely likely to encounter anyone to pass it on to and would die, sink to the ocean floor, and be devoured by cold-blooded scavengers. Although, it might give an intriguing explanation for the idiopathic beachings of cetaceans that have been seen. There would also be the issue of the stereotypical rabies symptom of hydrophobia. How exactly would that manifest in an animal literally surrounded by water?

      I think the most likely avenue of rabies contraction to an aquatic species would be domestic dog to arctic fox, arctic fox to polar bear, polar bear to a fully aquatic mammal. Those species get progressively less likely to encounter human civilizations and our domesticated animals.

      The problem is that the government treats married people differently than unmarried people. This distinction should not exist at the federal level. For example, an unmarried person will pay more in taxes than a married person because of the tax code. Also, consider things like healthcare, employment benefits, and social security survivor benefits – the federal government says that only heterosexual people are able to get these from their spouse.

      I would argue these fedearl distinctions violate a person’s rights along the lines of equal treatment and protection. Gay people should not be taxed more than straight people – nor should straight people be entitled to more benefits.

      The solution is for the federal government to not be involved and let the states take care of it. It would also pull the rug out from under the democrats. Sounds like a WIN-WIN to me!

    Defining moral question of our time?? What about the morals of the Justice Dept not going after people because they are black? Where is the justice for Brian Terry? What about Solis crying about Latinos being the hardest hit due to the construction disaster? Anyone not dumber than a bag of hammers knows that the Democrats caused the housing disaster.       If liberals hate marriage so much then why bother with gay marriage?
      If freedom of speech is important then why won’t liberals extend the same to conservatives?
      If life is important to liberals then why don’t they support personhood amendments to state constitutions? The personhood of an unborn child provides for penalties of anyone that kills a child in the womb if it is known that the mother wanted the child.
      If liberals are not racists then why do they attack african americans that don’t agree with their viewpoints as being not black enough? You may substitute spanish etc.
      As I stated and have shown so far the liberal/progressive/democratic party is the most immoral party in this country.

      With 32% of registered voters claiming Rep. affiliation and 34% claiming Dem., there’s still 32% that claim indy and 2% that claim the various other parties. Knowing these numbers and seeing the actions of the Dem. party, I think it’s pretty easy to draw the parallels with scripture to the Dem. party. BUT I must agree, it’s the whole country- as we are ALL Americans and will ALL suffer the fate, just as Israel did in it’s day.

    Let us remember that many in the lefty Dem camp are using this as an opportunity to limit free speech and religious freedoms of all Americans.
    And, let us remember that Dems such as Mayor Rahm Immanuel of Chicago attempted to take religious and business freedoms from Chick-Fil-A for their religious viewpoint, BUT, honored Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam which murders homosexuals.

      Both the Democrat and Republican positions are wrong on the issue. There is no constitutional authority, other than the amendment process, for the federal government to say if gay marriage is legal or not. Besides is just smoke and mirrors. They just put this out there to prevent us from discussing real issues.
