Demonic? FL Educator Arrested After Bizarre Burning & Cutting Ritual to Rid Teens of Evil Spirits

Demonology has no place in the educational process, or so learned a literacy specialist working at the Lealman and Asian Neighborhood Family Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. Danielle Harkins was arrested for child-abuse after allegedly attempting to conduct an exorcism on seven of her former students. The horrific stunt not only landed Harkins in jail, but it also led to burns and injuries among those teenagers who participated.
Harkins apparently waited until evening on Saturday to commence the bizarre festivities. Then, she reportedly built a fire near the St. Petersburg Pier and encouraged the teens to stand around it, while they attempted to self-expel the purported demons from their bodies. First, she allegedly told the kids to cut themselves to let the demons escape. Then, police claim she urged them to cauterize their wounds so that the spirits wouldn’t be able to re-enter their bodies.
Below, see Harkins’ appearance in court, during which she seems visibly annoyed:
The Miami Herald has a detailed recap of some of the troubling activities that unfolded on Saturday evening:
When Harkins held a lighter to one teen’s hand, wind blew the flame out, police said. That prompted her to douse his hand in perfume before setting it on fire. The boy suffered second-degree burns, police said.
Another teen was cut on the neck with a broken bottle, police said. Harkins used a flame to heat a small key, which she then used to cauterize the wound.
Steven Chanthalima, 17, one of the teens who attended the gathering, declined Tuesday evening to discuss what happened.
“I’m okay,” he said. “I’m fine. All I know is she’s in custody.”

All of the teenagers involved were of Asian ethnic background and all attended the school that Harkins has worked at for the past 4 1/2 years. The former students attended the school a few years ago, as police confirm that they are not currently involved with the institution. None of the young people notified their parents about the incident, but one of the boys did send a text message to a friend — a trigger that led to an investigation.
“Obviously, it’s very strange,” St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz told the Herald. “The motivations for the ritual are very unknown to us.”
Harkins has been suspended without pay as a result of the incident and the Lealman and Asian Neighborhood Family Center is assuring the public that nothing related to the occult is going on at the school. The literary specialist taught reading and writing there.
Neighbors told the Herald that Harkins has recently divorced and that, accompanying the end of her marriage, she purportedly began delving into extreme religious ideologies. So far, the police have had a difficult time getting the teens to discuss exactly what happened over the weekend.

And before you drop the “Christianity is different” remark let me say this… no it isn’t. From the perspective of any scientist (aka educated individual) they both are founded on scriptural teachings backed up by 0 empirical evidence or “proof”. Hence, teaching Creationism is about as educationally relevant as teaching the expulsion of demons via fire rituals.
And even though creationism wont physically harm the students it will certainly cripple them intellectually.

Posted on June 15, 2012 at 9:29pmI’m an extremely well educated person & I’m not a scientist. I am a published author w/ a degree English & all I see here is a story about a woman who is accused of child abuse & aggravated child abuse because she tried to expel demons from children & in doing so, cut & burned them. how is “the Blaze advocating the separation of Religious Ideology from the educational classroom”? to report that “A” occurred is neither to advocate on “A’s” behalf nor to oppose it. rather, it is merely the provision of information &, without commentary that takes a position in support of or opposition to, is simply unbiased, impartial, neutral. in the title, the reader is asked if this is a case of the demonic but no answer is presented & the reader must judge for himself. and again, there is no mention of separating religious ideology from the classroom. in fact, separating religious ideology from the classroom is not an issue this piece covers at all. neither is there any mention of creationism. are you, perhaps, reading a different article? or has your scientific education given you the ability to peer into the article w/ a microscope or some other instrument & discover issues that are not apparent in the syntax, grammar & wording presented?

I’m Christian & am asking VOTEBUSHIN12 to use his mighty brain & provide evidence to support his claim. if that’s amusing, it‘s only because it’s amusing to read VBI12′s comment & then reread the article & wonder why he’s making such accusations. it may be a failure of his brain or an oversight or something else but it’s rather funny that he discovered “advocating the separation of Religious Ideology from the educational classroom” in this piece. it’s “isn’t that odd” sort of humor & nothing more.
contrary to your contentions, I don’t have any interest in laughing at atheists. 1st, I encounter few atheists & many anti-theists. you are all shaking your fists @ God & refusing to belong to Him. it‘s the saddest thing I’ve encountered in this world that can be very sad (& I’ve encountered enormous sadness). there is enormous love available for you & other anti-theists but you refuse it because you will not belong to your Maker & support your refusal by insisting that since God cannot be quantified, He doesn’t exist. it never occurs that could you quantify God, He couldn’t be God. I will reply to you because you are the only to have offered me anything even resembling a substantive response.
You are right, the article is simply delineating information. When I referred to “the blaze” I was referring to its members – specifically those same members that, on other articles, advocated for the inclusion of religious doctrine in academic curriculum (both public and private). People like YANKI161 and RIGHTUNITE who were previously among those Insisting that the “Theory of evolution is just a theory” and that creationism is scientific who are now laughing at the absurdity of a teacher believing she has the right to exorcise demons. Ha!
I take no issue with this article, I take issue with hypocrisy of the peanut gallery choosing to weigh in on it.
Hopefully this clears things up and, being an educated individual, you’ll agree with my position… ?

You are confusing the adjective “empirical” that limits the scope of the scientific method for the noun “empiricism” as in “epistemic empiricism”. The decades long dead theory of knowledge which claimed for any proposition to be true/meaningful/falsifiable/verifiable it had to be empirically evidenced. That proposition itself has no empirical evidence and is therefore a logical contradiction. That’s why it was thrown out by epistemologists more than 50 years ago. Demands that only empirical evidence is somehow necessary to prove a proposition are ridiculously out of date and literally irrational. You cannot hold a contradiction to be true and claim to be well educated. How would math work if 1=0, or how could we even reason if A=notA? As any well educated man actually knows “form contradiction, everything follows”. Scientists who speak about anything outside of science are just blowing hot air.
Evolution tells us nothing new. We already know that physical change occurs over time. Unless you have proof abiogenesis actually occurred here on earth that is all evolution will ever prove. An already known and accepted fact. Change happens. Why should we teach that as if it’s important to anything important to intellectual development?

Posted on June 16, 2012 at 6:55pm@thearbiter (pt. 2): any god who can be quantifiable can’t be much of a god. He wouldn’t transcend physical existence (as we know it). such a god would be, at the very best, like the Roman/Greek/Sumerian/etc. concept of god: some being like us only bigger, w/ more power. a god who creates human out of another rebellious god & then destroys humans because they make too much noise & keep him awake. when that god is made to see the error of his action (who will do the menial tasks after all?), brings humans back into being by having the 1 surviving man, Utnapishtim, & his wife toss stones over their shoulders to repopulate the earth. you may think that‘s the sort of thing Christians believe or that there’s not much difference between such stories & Christian belief bit. what you fail to note is that such a god could easily be quantified by finding a modern day Gilgamesh, studying his genetic code to extract the divine from the human. you’d have divine DNA to quantify & research.
Christians God transcends creation & has created us & revealed Himself to us because He loves us& wants us to know & love Him. we rebelled against God, brought death into the world & lost connection w/ Him. God sent His Son, Jesus who restored the connection & overcame death by being killed for our sins & rising from the dead. Christians see evidence of our belief in our lives & the world. God doesn’t fit on a slide. we believe in God because we can’t make Him up. He’s more than we can imagine
Report Post »Alessandre
Posted on June 16, 2012 at 7:48pm@thearbiter (pt 3): anti-theists don’t understand that we can only come to know God through faith. it’s not an intellectual exercise, though some have come to faith through reason (John C. Wright, G.K. Chesterton, etc). some scientists come to faith (Anthony Flew, Blaise Pascal). as Pascal notes, God displays Himself through “signs which can be seen by those who seek him and not by those who do not[.]” some of us choose to seek Him w/ our whole being, why be surprised that we find Him?
@votebushin12: I assume you’re offering something “resembling a substantive” compliment. thanks. 1st, see argument above & at @warpspeedpetey. I am aware there are issues w/ spelling, grammar, etc. but if you overlook those, his argument is germane. 2nd, when you equate the Blaze (a news publication) & those who post comments on the Blaze you convolute the meaning of both past comprehension. I now understand what you mean & still note the article has nothing to do w/ the educational classroom nor have the comments. yes there are hypocrites. humans, including Christians, have that failing. you might admonish the hypocrisy in a comprehensible fashion. your basic position seems to be that Christianity is harmful. might I suggest you read history & discover how Judaism & Christianity, w/ all their human failings (& some have been horrific), have brought enormous good to humanity for 3000 + years. anti-theistic actions have also brought horrific harm, read the history of the USSR, China,

I’ve always wondered why there are so many atheists who do not know what it is they disbelieve. I understand that they lack any notion of the metaphysics involved because it isn’t taught commonly but to think that we worship another caused being is just silly. G-d is Actus Purus. The act of being, or more colloquially existence itself. To think that we worship something akin to Zeus is a ridiculous underestimation of the theists faculties. How could a being that is dependent on anything else be G-d? Is that not such an obvious article of reason that one needs no more than the slightest exposure to the Christian doctrines?

I didn’t confuse anything. Empiricism is a perspective on human intelligence that requires empirical evidence. My position that only empirically based claims be presented in the classroom is based on empiricism, much like the Scientific Method is based on empiricism, but no one really practices any type of epistemology exclusively.
You can’t say, “You meant to say empiricism” and then chastise me for saying empiricism. I said empirical for a reason – because it is a mandate of the scientific method, but not restrictive like empiricism (as you so kindly pointed out by providing basic axioms like True = True)
Anyway, that’s not the point of my thread.
@ALESSANDRE
The real point behind this is that one cannot simultaneously argue for the inclusion of Christian doctrine in the classroom and denounce demon exorcisms in the classroom. It’s hypocritical. If we are going to teach Christianity‘s version of Creationism we must also teach Buddhism’s, Hinduism’s, Paganism’s, and Ancient Greek’s Mythological version.
If you, or WARPSPEEDPETEY, can argue for the inclusion of such doctrine I would very much enjoy hearing it.

I also believe that it is not God’s desire that any of us mere mortals have to suffer eternal separation from Him. Not all Christians make fun of you. As a matter of fact, “intellectuals” seem to rather enjoy calling us names and taunting us, because we dare to believe in something that they don’t. I have atheist friends that talk to me about my “interpretation” of the Word on a regular basis. They enjoy hearing my points of view from my studies of my faith, and how I came to believe the things that I do. I don’t spend my time preaching at them, I answer their questions and enjoy their input. I don’t judge a person based on the belief that certain things do not benefit a person. But that’s supposed to be the measure on which I judge myself. Judgement of others is supposed to be left to the divine Creator. I am a flawed, mortal being, just as you are. I have no moral high ground on which to stand. We are all created equal.
My beliefs share nothing in common with this twisted woman, just as they share nothing in common with those people in the Westboro cult. We should all be held personally responsible for our actions and failings.
If you are going to start slinging insults, expect to be insulted. Or is that it? Do you want to incite people to dislike you, so that you can point at them and say, “See, they’re not perfect!!”?

I appreciate your intent, and in a perfect world what you say would be so. You believe what you want, I believe what I want, and we both go home happy. The only problem is which one of us gets to decide what our kids learn?
I would be upset to hear my kids are going to science class and learning about Creationism just as some of the bible-bangers on this site are off put by the idea of their kids learning about Evolution. In a world where common ground is a necessity to understanding, whose perspective becomes the norm? In the same we can’t all speak a different language and expect to communicate, so too can we not each learn a different “truth” and expect to function as a society.
This article is indication to me that religious idealism has no place in the classroom. Given the choice between two textbooks, one of which is substantiated by its readers’ “feelings” and the other by verifiable evidence… I think it’s clear which I THINK should be accepted as the standard.
That is simply my point.

To exorcise a demon, the victim must want to be rid of it and the exorcist must be “prayed up.” The Catholic Church has a select group of priests who have been made exorcists so that stupid stuff like this story does not occur.
