Demonic? NJ Family Flees Home & Sues Landlord…After ‘Poltergeist’ Allegedly Torments Them

A family in Toms River, New Jersey, is suing their landlord over the presence of what they dub a “poltergeist.” Just one week after they moved into their new residence on March 1, the family reported bizarre occurrences that have inevitably driven them out of the home — literally.
According to the Asbury Park Press, it was only days before Josue Chinchilla, Michele Callan and their two children permanently vacated the premises and checked into a hotel in the middle of the night. Following the incident, the family members, claiming to be shaken by events in the home, are pledging not to go back. So, what was it that created such fear and angst? The Press reports:
The family would come home and find their clothes and towels ejected from the closets and strewn over the floors. Doors would creak open and slam closed in unoccupied areas of the house. Lights switched on and off without human intervention. At night, footsteps could be heard from the kitchen after everyone was tucked in and unintelligible whispering seemed to fade in and out of thin air, according to the couple.
The most disturbing and consistent phenomenon, they claim, is the sound that comes through the vents to the basement — the muffled din of something lumbering seven feet below their feet.
Among other noises, they report hearing a voice cryptically say, “Let it burn.”
Now, an epic battle has unfolded between Chinchilla, Callan and their landlord, Dr. Richard Lopez (a well-known orthodontist). While the couple is demanding they get their $2,250 security deposit back, Lopez is dismissing their claims. The doctor has launched a counter suit against them, claiming that they have violated their lease and alleging that they’re using “paranormal activity” as a guise to shield their personal financial troubles and inability to pay rent.
Lopez’s attorney claims this is the first time in 10 years that anyone renting the home has said that it is haunted. But the family still maintains that they’re telling the truth. Chinchilla has allegedly been so shaken by what went on in the home that he was recently hospitalized for panic attacks.
“I would not have given anyone $4,000 (deposit and rent) to stay somewhere, just to pick up and leave seven days later. I would not have hired a moving truck, packed and unpacked, had my mother take off time from work to watch the kids,” she said. “The whole idea was to get a nice, big home for the kids. But there’s no way I’m going back there.”

The couple claim that they tried to rationalize what was going on inside the house — that is until the events of March 10 made it virtually impossible to do so. The Press explains:
Chinchilla and Callan had settled into bed to watch television when he said his attention was drawn to a tapping noise against the set. After having spent the past week trying to be a voice of reason, he said he just ignored it. There had to be a rational explanation.
A short time later, Chinchilla felt a tug on the sheets over him and watched in bewilderment as the bedclothes began to slide off him. He then felt an invisible hand land on his arm. Callan, who was next to him at the time, claims she saw what looked like a shapeless dark apparition in the bedroom.
This incident was the final straw, as it led the family to seek alternative shelter. Callan claims that she has even been inflicted with welts and sores upon trying to visit them home to pick up items.

Chinchilla and Callan have been counseled by Terence Sullivan, a local pastor at Element Church in North Brunswick. All parties believe that the home has fallen prey to demonic possession. Paranormal teams have been brought to the house as well and have found, based on their reviews, that a haunting of some sort is taking place — though they cannot yet be certain that it is demonic in nature (video was recorded and will be released to the public).
The family reports that nothing has followed them to the motel where they are staying, although one of the paranormal investigators said that it is possible that a demonic being has an attachment to Callan.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 1:19pmMy parents bought a 55-year old home that had 7 gables. The owner/builder killed himself in the home and we were never told of haunts until strange things started happening. Door closings, chandeliers rattling, shuffles/ walking sounds in the attic, beds shaking, sightings of the man with half of him missing. We described the man to elderly neighbors and they verified it was him by the newspaper article of his suicide. My parents finally had the home exorcized. I was so glad when they moved out! I am convinced these were not sweet poltergeists hanging around there. Creepy.

We each and everyone felt spooked by that place, but we didn’t say anything to each other out of fear of looking like a nut. Then crazy things started happening. We said nothing to each other about it. Then two of my roomies were out side in the evening. Susan was talking to Jack. Jack looked over her shoulder and saw “something”. His hair stood on end and he turned white as a ghost. Susan screamed. We found him passed out and his eye’s were opened as wide as saucers but he was unresponsive. The expression on his face was total fear. When he came to, he said he saw something, but had no idea what it was. It was a long night and we moved out the next morning.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:55pmI don’t believe in ghosts but I lived in what you would call a haunted house. As soon as our year’s lease was up we were outta there.
The kids had awful nightmares. For me, lying in bed almost asleep and not being able to move but feeling something evil was right there and when I could finally say just “Jesus” it would stop. Seeing dark shapes flit by, parts of the house were very scary to all of us, the outside back yard near and in the barn was bone chilling. At night when I had to park my car I’d run into the house it was so scary and I was 32 at the time. We could hear voices screaming like far away, and chains rattling. Later we found out in the other side of the house they saw apparitions.
The very weird thing is, for a long time we didn’t talk to each other about what we experienced. Two adults and two children. It’s like we thought we must be crazy so we were just quiet. Eventually as Christians we tried to bring in folks to help us kick out any demons but we were not successful. The only safe room where no one felt creeped out was the kitchen. We spent as much time in there as we could.

Posted on April 17, 2012 at 12:49pmI don’t usually tell people this for obvious reasons, but I think it is important and most of you will get the meaning…..
About 6 months before Obama was elected, I woke up suddenly with a feeling that someone was watching. I looked over to the bedroom door, the light in the hallway was on. What I saw almost gave me a heart attack.
Filling up nearly the entire doorway was a black amorphous, opaque figure with ribbons of colors flowing around the edges. I sat up, rubbed my eyes, pinched myself…still there. It didn’t say anything, but words kept going through my brain: Choices, be careful of changes, it is coming… then a picture flashed in my head of city buildings on fire and ragged people…It sat there and I stared at it for what seemed like 30 seconds.
Started shouting to my husband to wake up, but he sleeps like a rock so I reached over and shook him awake. When I turned back around it had started to fade and by the time he was awake enough to focus on the door, it was gone.
I wasn’t taking so much as aspirin or even caffeine, the electrical systems in the house were better than fine (we had them checked after doing some renovations). I hadn’t had a waking “vision” like this since I saw an American Indian in our basement as a child (later found out the house was built on old Indian lands). Needless to say, we started prepping more seriously after that and became more aware of politics as well.

We were staying overnight at my father’s house in an upstairs bedroom that has french doors in the middle of the room at one end to a small balcony. There was a security light outside (country home) on a pole that would shine into the room at night (a shaft of light). In the middle of the night, something woke me, I sat up and looked over to the middle of the room where I thought I saw my girlfriend walking in the shaft of light (the figure was completely white but I attributed this to how light will “bleach” someone’s appearance) from the open french doors. I looked over to see my girlfriend lying next to me asleep. I quickly looked back and the woman (who was about the same height, description as my girlfriend) was gone. I immediately woke my girlfriend and told her what I saw, she mumbled something and went back to sleep.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 1:39pmFigs, i’ve gone through what I call demon attacks and you call sleep paralysis. I watched a episode of weird or what and they talked about it. they said 1-4 Americans suffer from it, but they don’t really know what causes it. The paralysis make be the effect, but the cause I believe is demonic. Sorry I’m not educated, but I have personal experience. Please consider this, as I tell the truth, even tho its hard to believe since we don’t know each other. After suffering from these attacks for 2 years, maybe it would have once every 3 months ish, I got attacked twice in one weekend. Fed up I asked my friend to help. He prayed over me, his words I don’t remember. As he was praying I remember my hairs on my arms sticking up, my back as well. Then I started to cry. Uncontrollably. Then I let out a howl, twice I howled, then wept bitterly. I had no control over these things, this and other better stuff has cemented the real truth for me. If you read to the end. Thanks for reading. Take Care

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 2:23pmIt sounds like these incidents put a lot of stress on you (possibly leading to loss of sleep, leading to increased stress levels) . Possibly the care and attention from your friend and your outburst of emotion, was enough of a stress relief to get some real sleep and alleviate some symptoms. I have no idea, however. This is all pure conjecture on my part. I do think that the scenario I just laid out sounds far more plausible than ghost or demons haunting you. You should read the article on sleep paralysis as well. It may help you if you are still experiencing this sleep disorder. Or you may try a sleep study.

I have since learned that it is sleep paralysis, so when an episode occurs, rather than panic, I try to relax and wait to wake up peacefully. I am a christian with a strong faith in Jesus Christ. I also know that God created us in His image with very complex minds that science doesn’t even begin to understand. With that in mind, I don‘t blame demonic forces for everything that I can’t explain. If you want answers, read your Bible — all of it; not just the parts that agree with your preconceived ideas.

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 11:48pm@GODHATESFIGS: Nothing in the article on sleep paralysis is scientifically verifiable. It is speculation and hypothesis. Such articles create more questions than answers. For instance, what causes your mind to play tricks on you? Why, if you are conscious, but your body is asleep, would your mind hallucinate? If your body produces a chemical that paralyzes the body during sleep, then why do they claim that people who move a lot during sleep actually sleep better? Also, if you are paralyzed while you sleep, then how do you respond to an emergency like when your house is on fire? I wonder how many people have died in house fires because they were in a state of sleep paralysis? Also, how do you know that this state of sleep paralysis is not induced by demons or aliens? Just because the researchers don’t experience the hallucination/supernatural event, and can only report their observations, doesn’t mean there was no hallucination/supernatural event. You can claim that the mind hallucinates these experiences, but since there is no way to distinguish between a hallucination and a real supernatural event like the ones described, you are merely making an argument from ignorance. Perhaps the hallucination, allowing that there are hallucinations, are caused by demons or aliens for the simple purpose of terrifying the person, even if the hallucination itself is not real. Further, why these kinds of hallucinations? Why not hallucinate something nice and pleasant like a massage, etc.?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~That’s spooky in its self.
The destruction and death of nerve cells in the brain causes memory failure.
Alzheimers Disease is [in way] ‘evidence’ that memory does not come from thin-air.
–But, what IS memory …..really?
Electricity
Satellite transmissions
X-rays
etc…
;^> Why not poltergeists ?
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:20pmI have read that the Amityville Horror thing was a hoax. The people couldn’t pay their mortgage so they made the whole thing up. Wonder if that’s the case here.
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:24pmI’ve seen real videos of this kind of crap from a coworker in Phoenix when I worked for Motorola. He would leave a camera running and when came home his home was a wreck. Watched them myself on Super 8 film.
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:35pmAmityville…hoax, yes and no. The son, Chris Lutz, avoided the issue for years due to childhood teasing. He did a “follow-up” show a few years ago and realized there was lying involved. He finally read the book himself and is writing a rebuttal book. He says the reality is more horrifying. IIRC he’s calling it “growing up Amityville”
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:19pmI‘ve heard some unusual tales of people in financial trouble and couldn’t pay there rent.Poltergeist haven’t been one of them.Why choose this as a smooze?You wouldn’t.There are a number of much more easily used tactics.While no one else has reported anything ,it doesn‘t mean they didn’t experience something.They may have written it off, weren’t home long enough to truly experience it,didn’t have kids.
Report Post »Actually, all but what he experienced .can be done by humans, rather easily I might add.Instead of questioning the renters only,If it were me I’d be questioning the owner.Is the owner in financial straights?Maybe a good deal to buy the house would fall through if it were still a rental.
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:55pmCall in Ghost Hunters … but tell them to set up the cameras and LEAVE ..these “investigators” are always talking over the evidence … and chasing when you need to shut up sit still and listen .. since they are incapable of that … leave the camera running and the house empty .. then go back and see what you get and try to “communicate” .
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 1:03pmbetter to call a REAL local investigation team like they already did.
all those shows blow stuff way out of proportion for entertainment value.
that said, the flickering light is a overheating issue common with those sorts of lights. the moving object and the EVP they show are kind of weak. I‘ve gotten much better EVP’s that were VERY clear. http://soundcloud.com/g-h-o-s-t-s
some states require being informed prior to moving in if a place is suspected to be haunted. I’m not sure if NJ is one of them.
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 1:19pmI’ve gotten to where I like Amy Allen on Dead Files [comes on Fridays after Ghost Adventurers]. Of course, they would only show the ones where she’s right, but when she is, she’s pretty close to the truth. Having said that, it could be all made up for entertainment for The Travel Channel’s profit.
Posted on April 16, 2012 at 12:26pmIf what they say is true, then it should be fairly simple to produce evidence supporting their claims. If this were the case, there should be no need for a lawsuit as any reasonable landlord would allow them out without penalty. It doesn’t make sense that they would go to all the trouble to move in and then 7 days later want out so badly.
