Dem’s Largely Symbolic Tax Cut Measures Fail

As expected, Senate Republicans have blocked two pieces of legislation that would have allowed taxes to rise on upper income taxpayers and small businesses on Jan. 1.

The vote Saturday on a measure that would have kept the cuts in place for incomes under $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples was defeated when the vote turned out 53-36, seven short of the 60 needed to advance the measure. Another measure that would have kept the cuts in effect except on incomes over $1 million was defeated when a 53-37 vote also fell seven votes short of the necessary 60.

With the votes complete, real negotiations between the White House and Republicans can start on a bill to extend the tax cuts at all levels. That’s because many saw the vote on the measures as largely a political statement by Democrats.

“Democrats wanted to show where they stood,” Politico reports, “and only after they did that could they begin to accept the inevitable outcome, a temporary renewal of all the Bush tax cuts, rather than just those for the middle class.”

“It became apparent the second time we met that actually there weren’t going to be any bipartisan negotiations to reach a decision until there had been a political catharsis on the Democratic side,” said Jon Kyl (R-AZ), who is charged with leading negotiations. “We’ve been very congenial with each other, but it’s been very clear that we’re not going to be negotiating anything until all of this political process is over with.”

Those negotiations are expected to include discussions on renewing expiring jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed.

In comments Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made sure to demonize high-end earners and businesses in the wake of the failed measures.

“The majority of the Senate like the majority of the country believes the middle class deserve this tax cuts,” he said. “The minority of the Senate, against all evidence to the contrary that millionaires, billionaires and these big CEOs who ship jobs overseas deserve this giveaway.”

“We feel you should not raise taxes on anyone during a recession,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) responded.

Reid is hopeful an agreement between the two sides can be secured by late next week.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What I never hear asked or answered is why do all these polititians (democrat and republican) believe that they have a right to monies the American people earn. These polititians need to cut spending on many of our so called social programs that really server to enslave the general population and make us rely on the big brother government. What ever happened to self relience and getting off your duff and doing what’s needed to support ourselves. Government has gotten so bloated and has so many people believing they can’t surive without some sort of government program. Our founding fathers never intended for the government to support the population we would not have a Republic we would have had some sort of dictatorship.

It‘s not that people in this country don’t want to work …bud… It’s that our illustrious Federal, State and Local bodies of government and the “spin off” work that government controls (you know….non-profits….big unions….gov unions….big union gov. contractors….etc…etc..) decided THEY COULD control who gets to work and who gets to make any money…..that’s why… Intrusive government is to blame….overthrow is the only way…massive government rollback….start over….I’ll take my chances…

My inference was not that people didn’t want to work it is that our bloated gig brother government is doing everything the progressives can think of to make our people dependent of government to surive. Many Americans are ready and willing to work but when unemployment benifits extend for 99 weeks people are encouraged to stay at home, look a little, and whine about not finding the perfect employment for themselves. Even in the town I live in people are finding it more profitable to stay on unemployment or get on wellfare than actually go to work. Thus Government is instilling in them I must depend on Government to exist.

I favor a repeal of the tax code and subsequent disbanding of the I.R.S….and the Federal Reserve….Next, I would propose a tariff based tax system on goods and services purchased in America…period…. It would force the millions that do NOT receive income on the books to pay MORE of their fair share and is the ONLY way to police it……. You will buy what you can afford ..period… The rich will automatically pay more taxes because they can afford BIGGER STUFF!! Case closed…..no more whining and bickering…and save zillions by disbanding the IRS….

Just wander who over at the shadow government better known as the Federal Reserve is pulling the strings on this politcal stunt? Barry is already on the record as saying if tax cuts are allowed to expire he has big progressive plans to spend that money and not pay a dime on the national debt.

Simple one page regulation if the tax cuts were to expire which would state

” All additional tax money collected after Jan 1st, 2011 will go directly to decrease the National Debt.” This regulation will be signed by all Congressional and Senate Members with POTUS being the Ultimate Authority. This Regulation will be in effect and cannot be compromised, altered or amended until said Debt is exhausted.

NO need for a bill or regulation in this country to be 1000, 2000 pages. anything beyond 5 pages just means special interest and corruption is involved. The complete disregard for the American people has got to STOP.

Lying and stealing has saturated our National Consciousness and many Politicians have been doing it so long they can no longer distinguish between stealing and lying and honorable truthful behavior. The notion that they are saviors of the people and only the Rulers and masters in washington D, C. can save us is ego-insanity. Their constant compulsion to steal our income through inflated taxation and act like they can in all their elected glory magically resolve every ill and discomfort affecting us is insane. These glorified demagogues need to be brought down seriously down out of the supreme clouds they have been occupying far too long. I think many of them are not now and may never get the message the people sent back in November. We can’t allow them to continue any longer, restraining these idiots is our greatest challenge.

      @BRAVEHEART

This will be very painful to write but if it will serve to turn a nation back to God, here goes:

I like the name Braveheart. It also reminds me of another title The Patriot where the fictitous character Benjamin Martin repented for previous atrocities but was compelled by the same conscience to fight again.

I likewise have a guilty past having helped a friend get an abortion. At the time I though I was being noble to the lady in trouble but this sin has been on my conscience for years and the only small relief came when I gave my life over to Christ.

Now with Obamacare covering abortion I have contemplated refusal to buy when it comes that time in trade for jail time.

The whole reason for bringing this up here Braveheart, is A) to let you know your rant is justified and B) to take the opportunity to underscore the current moral bankruptcy of this administration and congress that along with their losing touch with the “saturated” nature of their lying and stealing does have other tragic impacts on the moral fiber of this Nation of which I find myself a tragic part of.

A futther footnote on Obama in his not sticking up for abortion survivors is one last graphic example that struck me hard a couple of months ago. It was a report in regard to his calous non-involvement to protect the lives of abortion survivors and refusal to stand in the gap. It was about a report that survivors at a Miami abortion clinic were put up on a hot roof of the clinic in garbage bags to die. This note I bring up because this probably was the very same clinic that I drove my friend to for her abortion! God forgive me! God forgive us all. In the 60s and 70s this nation grew quite insane with its materialistic standards and pleasures while turning our backs on God. Maybe by this humble and painful confession as others review their past for similar past sins and repent and daily get on their knees we can submit for HIs forgiveness so He will thus heal the land of the current scorge of a fight that have been going on since the progressive movement really took off almost 100 years ago and finally reverse the insanity and lack of political restraint!

I don’t remember WHERE it was, but there was a building in THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, HARDLY USED BY ANYONE…AND OBAMA GAVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO IT TO EXCHANGE THE “WINDOWS”……ANOTHER LOCATION IN THE MID-WEST, WHERE HE GAVE MILLIONS TO INSTALL “BIKE RACKS”….THAT THE TOWNS PEOPLE SAID NO ONE USED THEM.

Yo Bro, you seem to think the unemplyment rate (falsely reported) at 9.8% has been that high for 10 years? Your figures are wrong…unemplyment jumped in 2008 (2 years), and the real unemployment rate is 23% (if you include those people not counted by the govt or the U6). But to answer your question. Most small businesses hve income in the $250K range and higher, so if you let them keep more of their hard earned money, they would hire more people and invest in their company’s to grow, simple simon. Now, to further explain the last two years of not hiring, it is called ‘uncertainty’. Meaning, businesses don’t know what the full effect of Obamacare is going to do to their pockebooks, AND business STILL don‘t really know for certain that their taxes won’t go up. We had a crash in 2008 in case you missed that small fact, where credit froze up, and our economy almost completely went belly up. So they cut expenses (people) to save money, so they could at least stay open. Then there was the little thing called Financial Regulation, which further is supressing investment. You add all of that up and that spells contraction in the economy, due to uncertainty that any investment will pay off, whether it be buying new equipment or adding new workers. Does that answer your question? If not I’ve got nothing for ya, go on back to camp!

Oh and Greenspan is a fool, who did not see the 2008 crash coming in the first place, and he created the easy money, that led to the housing bubble bursting. And while I am at it, all the liberal one celled amoebas blame it all on Bush. Let’s go back to 1977 CRA law passed, which mandated all Americans own a home, how noble, but how stupid. It decoupled the price of housing from the CPI, which started the housing bubble, then Cuomo created the NINJA loans, and Bill Clinton removed the barriers between investment houses and banks. Effectively creating easy loans to people who could not afford them if the rates went up (which happened), and investors bet incorrectly that housing would NEVER lose value. Now that is a recipe for disaster, which has befallen on us! We will be lucky, no, make that, it will take a miracle, if we get out of this financial mess without defaulting on our debt ($54 Trillion today – see USDEBTCLOCK.ORG). Now, I do not put all the blame on the ********, because progressive Rhino’s also contributed to the mess. This is no longer about left or right, but about SURVIVAL. BTW, don;t call me a *********, you are a moron for saying that,

      IF WASHINGTON WERE ALIVE TODAY:

He might say in the pattern so astutely and achedemically laid out in the masterful works of Peter A. Lillback’s “Sacred Fire” Chapter 29 the following:

I am “confident” and reliant “that providence” has taken a “hand” in promoting prosperity to yet again “frustrate the enemy” and “advance” the debate to give aid and relief to all income levels to preserve this great republic.

Note: This in light of the vote Saturday on a measure that would have kept the cuts in place for incomes under $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples was defeated when the vote turned out 53-36, seven short of the 60 needed to advance the measure. Another measure that would have kept the cuts in effect except on incomes over $1 million was defeated when a 53-37 vote also fell seven votes short of the necessary 60.

And in my own words praise God! I am confident all classes will be protected and it is further hoped the barbaric death tax will also go down in flames that money or rather wealth will protect small businesses which wealth will be passed unmollested and without further agressive government control from generation to generation!

Cool it! I think we’re all on the same side (except I’m a little suspicious about your name which sounds like a troll label). Yes it would be good to get a real tax break. And you are right in your perception regarding just limiting the discussion to that.

However, what the response in the Senate is is push back on the chicken crap maneuver in the house were debate on 200 to 250K earners was being stiffled. Had this thing gone forward in the Senate as is it would have been a triumph for the class warfare bull crap agenda.

What Grandma and I are both hoping and praying for is now that debate can be resumed (as it should of been in the House before the vote) that maybe some sanity can be restored and spending also get addressed as well as a tax break to all levels (unless of course we are talking about the uber-rich like Soros) to encourage free markets at all levels to A) Know where health care costs are going wind up after January 1st 2011, and B) That big government is going to stop trying to rape everyone that can create jobs and those seeking work.

Don’t blame Grandma for the convoluted mess in Washington. Instead focus your ire at DC and demand positive results or else and let these career elites know that their political days are numbered if they don‘t start addressing the economic issues and don’t stop playing games with We the People.

“$200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples”

As my hubby pointed out, this amounted to a marriage penalty. Why was it not $400,000 for couples? Just sayin’

    Afterall, the keyword is “symbolic”.

      A MESSAGE TO WASHINGTON

Please put the self interest, ego and pride aside and practice some humility. Please stop the political mind games. We the American people have common sense. Let’s please get to the truth.

THIS IS THE POLITICAL SOUND BITE WE WANT TO HEAR FROM WASHINGTON IN THE COMING WEEKS

      FROM REPUBLICANS

To current administration: trillions in spending, unemployment at 9.8 %, your policies and ideology have failed. Please don’t tell us that the rich are the problem and that raising there taxes is going to correct the failures of current policies and ideology.

      FROM THE DEMOCRATS

To current administration: Our policies and priorities have failed to date. We have lost an important election and the American people have spoken. We are now ready to try it another way.

Who cares to have the courage to humble themselves in front of the people of this great Nation?

Stop playing pentie antie with our lives and our children

Stop trying to confuse us. This is a we Nation, not a me Nation.

Progressives have never been in favor of marriage, that’s probably why so many of them cheat on their spouses (ie Bill Clinton.) They really don‘t believe in anything that’s meaningful such as God, family and country.

THERE IS A LOT OF SIMLPLE COMMEN SENSE THAT NEEDS TO BE APPLIED TO ALL OF WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS CURRENT GOVERNMENT. FOR THE SIMPLE MINDED AMERICANS THAT WANT IT STRAIGHT WITHOUT A LOT OF MIND GAMES HERE IT IS.

In sports you have two teams,
You have two head coaches playing each other,
You are expected to win and give the fans what they paid for,
If the two teams that are playing have an o and 3 record the fans don’t buy tickets and the head coaches are fired. If you don’t fire the coaches the teams finish last and the attendance goes down.

The American people have stopped buying tickets to the game between republicans and democrats, the stadium is empty, its time for change.

WOULD YOU BUY A TICKET TO A BAD FOOTBALL GAME, WOULD YOU BUY A TICKET TO GO TO A BAD MOVIE
WOULD YOU BUY A CAR IF THE REVIEWS WHERE BAD
WOULD YOU SEND YOUR CHILD TO A UNDERACHIEVEING SCHOOL

WACTH THE OTHER HAND, WATCH THE PHONIE SMILES.

Funny how easy they passed S 510
Neocon nwo just like the Dems

The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to doctrinaire and academic thinkers.

The Democrats tried to extend the Bush tax cuts (which ballooned the debt) for 98% of Americans. And everyone here is happy that it failed. Pathetic. It’s brainwashing I guess – you say your for the “average American” but clearly you support the millionaires and billionaires at the expense of the rest of us.

During the last quarter made the highest profits on record, Wall Street bonuses are at an all time high. The rich are getting richer. And their hiring more, any more than they did when the tax cuts went into effect in 2000 (which lead to a four year period where job growth was less than population growth). And here you are defending to the death their right to make even more money while the majority of Americans are hurting and many are about to lose everything they have. Nice, guys. Brainwashed, and pawns of the rich.

Secretly the democrats are cheering. Now they can let all off the tax cuts expire and blame all of it on the republicans. You have to remember that this is chess, not checkers.

And JZS, in response to your being for the “average American” comment, I’ll tell you straight up that I am not for the average American. I am for all Americans. That includes the 2% of Americans that you are not for. I find it disgusting that you see no problem with singling out a portion of society and then bringing the full force of the government down on them because they are in the minority. You should be ashamed of yourself.

      1) They want to encourage divorce and destroy the family foundation.
      2) The government will lose income.
      3) Common sense :)
