Dems Maneuver Food Safety Bill Toward Passage

With their last-ditch lame-duck legislative session winding down, Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives are continuing to push forward with provisions of S. 510, the so-called FDA Food Safety Modernization Act. The $1.4 billion bill would place stricter government standards on imported foods.
Supporters claim the proposed law is critical after widespread outbreaks of E. coli and salmonella in peanuts, eggs and produce.
But the bill’s detractors argue it will raise food prices, add to the deficit and burden struggling states with more unfunded mandates. “This bill is a typical Washington response to a perceived crisis,” Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., warned after the Senate voted. “In every area of government we see diminishing returns when government spends billions without any hope of improved outcomes.”
“Millions of Americans are fed up with ‘security theater’ at the Department of Homeland Security and are about to witness an outbreak of ‘food-safety theater’ from the FDA. In the coming months and years consumers will see that more government does not mean safer food,” Coburn said.
After a procedural error forced the Senate-passed bill back to the drawing board, Democrats looked for alternatives to push the measure through the House. The alternative they’ve reportedly settled on was incorporating provisions of S. 510 into H.R. 3082 — the must-pass continuing resolution funding bill to keep the federal government operating for another year. The House voted to pass H.R. 3082 Wednesday and the bill will now proceed to the Senate.
Coburn, a consistent Republican opponent to the measure cautioned about the potential of final passage in the Senate:
Next week the Senate will take up the tax bill (to continue present rates) first and then go on to the Continuing Resolution. The minority party has strong reservations about the CR (HR.3082) in part because it provides funding for Obamacare and other additional funding (which means it does more than just merely “continue” Federal programs) and includes added funding for the thousands of new FDA positions that S.510 mandates. Will the GOP stand firm on its pledge not to fund more excess government? Please continue sending messages to your Senators!

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 11:29pmThis will not make food safer, I mean what are they going to do handcuff E-coli? If it‘s out there it’s going to get spread at some point, there is nothing anyone can do to stop it, making more laws and regulations isn’t the answer. If it was then it would have already worked.

I kid you not the asterisk was there to bring attention to “food that is good for you”. I don’t know how in many years of eating, I failed to know what food is good for me. I must now have the government and Dennys tell me. I deliberately chose food without an asterisk and waited fearfully for the food police to take me away. This is all getting so ridiculous. This would work if we have the seed. However, Monsanto is assuring all seeds must come from them. Even heritage seeds would become affected if cross-pollinated. India and Mexico have fought Monsanto–seems they aren’t as dumb as some think. But recently, Mexico has given in, so there goes their corn. The average American has no idea what this “safety” bill is all about, and I really wonder how many of our politicians do.

Good point….. our politicians know nothing about the contents of this bill by their own admission….. they never read bills before voting. They only respond to pressure brought to bear by lobbyists or other groups who want or don’t want a particular bill passed. The best “pressurer”, or the group who hurts said politician the most if (s)he doesn’t vote their way, is the winner….that’s just the way of politics and in our case it will take a well-organized grassroots organization to get the job done on our behalf. This is what we (people who are like the posters on this site) need in DC.

They (libterds) want chaos and they will get it when Americans especially in big cities are faced with hunger and empty gorcery shelves. Riots, violence, muders, all in the name of hunger. Us rurals will get hit as well.
On the other hand, with Walmlart being the world‘s largest retailer perhaps they’ll step in to save the day (by not allowing the gov to affect their bottom line by creating false food shortages), and will find a way to circumvent this proposed phoney lack-of-food nightmare. What a peculiar turn of events when Walmart suddenly becomes a haven for the hungry, or in other words “our favorite store.”

Report Post »Your sarcasm is quite charming. Actually, you inadvertantly make a good point. Mansanto has been regularly suing farmers for seed cleaning, effectively putting many of them out of business. So I suppose more regulations imposed on these smaller farming operations won’t have any impact on them, will it? Especially since so many of them are on the edge of failing as it is. Won’t it be great when all of the food in America is owned and produced by a few giant corporations and then there is no competition? Aren’t monopolies great? And of course, there is no possibility of a government agency with UNLIMITED power, with no accountability to the people, doing anything that might be detrimental to said people. Because we all know that everyone that works in government is perfectly moral, just, selfless and above corruption. Therefore, we are perfectly safe laying all of our rights at their feet to do with what they please. You must be very young.

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 9:59pmThis is such a HUGE deal, why is nobody talking about it? The biggest problem with this bill is that it creates a brand new government agency(the FSA – food safety administration) that is not accountable to the american people, and grants this agency complete authority to regulate all food production in the United States. It is a blank check of power over our food supply. There is nothing in the bill that specifically regulates small farms, home gardens etc. – BUT ONLY BECAUSE THERE IS NO SPECIFIC LANGUAGE IN THE BILL AT ALL. It simply says that the FSA has the power to decide on safety guidelines for all food production facilities. This is defined as any facility that produces food, period. It doesn’t even limit their power to food being produced for sale or public consumption. Even worse, the specific regulations won’t even be written until after the bill has passed. The FSA will come up with them, and therefore can expand them to whatever they deem is necessary. Does this sound familiar to anyone, like maybe the TSA deciding to use the full body scanners and enhanced pat-downs? This new FSA can do whatever they want regarding the control of food production, including setting minimium standards for the use of pesticides, etc. I wonder what that will do to all the organic farms? And I wonder what the new “regulations” will do to those small farming operations that are barely making it right now. They will go out of business, and then our food supply will be completely controlled by a few huge food conglomerates like Mansano(sp?). And guess who owns major stock in that big boy? George Soros…..just sayin….

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 12:19amThis Bill is not about getting anyone richer, it is about restricting American’s ability to sustain their family, it will increase the FDA’s power to the point that they can shut down Mom & Pop farms and roadside fruit and vegatable stands under the guise of food safety and just as they did in Georgia, shut down private citizens from growing food in their own back yard. How many of you remember when Obama first went into office he passed an obscure Wildlife and Fisheries bill which would allow the Gov. (at their own discretion) to limit access to rivers and streams for fishing. The Government is systematically limiting our ability to acquire food, thus, increasing our dependency on them, which will fulfill the prophecies that say we will have to have a mark to buy and sell in the new world order, what better way to insure everybody gets on the band wagon. I bet as soon as the food prices are raised too high for common people to purchase any, our great and wonderful government will step in with a plan to save us all “All Praise The Government” one little thing though, since food is scarce and people will be trying to obtain it fraudulently you will have to place this little harmless chip in your arm or forehead in order to get any.

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 12:57amAccording to the CDC, “We estimate that foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year.” That’s fine if none of those deaths or hospitalizations are members of your family. And maybe you’re okay if you are putting food on your table that have just a few pathogens, salmonella, listeria, or E. coli from American or foreign companies. Should we keep the government out of the food business, even if there is lead, PCBs, DDT or whatever else in our food? The only people commenting are those who have no earthly clue about how safe our food is because of government regulations of that industry.
Those regulations are in place because the United States understood the cost in human lives of the lack of regulation. Put your trust in those in those who profit from any food you buy if you want. You have my condolences if a family member bites it.

Have you ever worked in an industry that’s regulated by the FDA? It’s as corrupt as corrupt gets. I used to work for a major pharmaceutical company and saw it’s effects first hand. There were things they should have taken action on that they didn’t. A simple fine of a hundred million dollars or so and a consent decree and all is forgiven. At other times there was absolutely no issue, but they would take advantage of a public perception to move in and extort money from the company.
The FDA is not a safety organization. It’s a shakedown squad. If you think otherwise then you’ve clearly never worked in an industry regulated by them.

One other thing genius. People that sell you food have a vested interest in NOT KILLING YOU. They lose a customer right off the bat, and the bad publicity would soon have them in another line of work.
But government regulation has no real interest in your safety. Their interests are not affected if you die. Yes I‘ll put my faith in the farmer who’s livelyhood depends on providing me with quality food than a corrupt government beuracracy any day of the week and twice on sundays.
Besides foodborne illnesses are very rarely caused by problems in the manufacturing/production side of things. The overwhelming majority of foodborne illnesses are caused by improper handling and preparation of foods by the end consumer.

This bill is a nightmare – worse even than obamacare, but nobody in the media will paint it that way or even discuss it because to follow it all the way through to it’s logical end is a scene so gruesome no one can fathom our government doing this to us on purpose. But – as we all know, this administration and the Dems are fans of Mao, so in his footsteps will they trod. God help us all.

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 1:56amThe reality is most food borne illnesses are probably from butt to mouth or nose to mouth or ****** to mouth, more then shipper to consumer. That nice waiter you you tip 20% too, (yeah we working class folk tend to tip better then you little acorn trolls rolling around here) probably didn’t wash his hands before handling handling your hamburger. That beautiful apple at the grocery store, some guy who just dropped the kids off the pool was rolling the nice apple around his hands for a minute or two before you picked it up. The FDA won’t do nothing for the overwelming majority of cases. Bye the time the FDA gets around to actually do something, the mess has already cleaned itself up literally. And besides a little food born illness is good for you every now and again, after all science says were to clean and in fact that why were so depressed. Damn immune system. Maybe I’ll go lick my cellphone, after all they say cellphones are covered with fillthy germs. And maybe it will boost my immune system so I don’t feel so depressed. “sigh”.

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 2:48amThis bill gives the FDA the authority to have you arrested for giving your neighbor vegetables from your garden. It buries the small farmer in new red tape and fees so they will be forced to sell off to big aggro.
Report Post »The bill also exempts imports due to existing treaties.
By what authority can our government make it a crime to grow food in your back yard?
What happened to our constitution?
What happened to property rights?
How far is too far?
At what point is liberty dead?

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 9:10amThe only things left on Glenn’s list are the Military and the media if they push this food rationing (or whatever they will call it) through. Doesn’t it seem rather odd that the military have been doing exercises in controlling the public “in case of FOOD SHORTAGES”? WAKE UP, AMERICA! START STOCKING UP ON SURVIVAL SUPPLIES! It wouldn’t be the first time STARVATION was used as a weapon; remember what happened to the Jews at Auschwitz, Dachau…. you get the picture! Boy Scout motto; “Be Prepared”!!!

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 11:44amWonder when the Progs will try to pass a bill regulating the cleanliness of money? I think we have learned over the past two years that when a Prog proclaims that (s)he has a laserlike focus on something, watch out! To paraphrase the infamous quote about Nero–the Progs are dillydallying while the country is falling apart.
