Dems Receive Twice as Much ‘Foreign’ PAC Money as GOP

While President Barack Obama and other well-known figureheads of the Democratic Party are criticizing Republicans for allegedly benefiting from “foreign donations” to conservative interest groups, a new analysis from the Center for Responsive Politics has revealed that the Democratic Party has raised more than $1 million from political action committees affiliated with foreign companies — about twice as much as the $510,000 the GOP has received from PACs on the same list.

The PACs at the center of the study are funded entirely by contributions from American employees of foreign companies. “This is not foreign money per-se, but these PACs are certainly populated by people who work for foreign companies,” says David Levinthal, a spokesman for the Center for Responsive Politics.

“Foreign companies and foreign governments can lobby Congress, and that is probably one area where they have a measurable effect on politics,” Levinthal told The Hill. “Foreign-subsidiary political action committees is about as close as you can get.”

In response, Republicans are crying foul, accusing the Democratic Party of hypocrisy in their criticism of groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American Crossroads, a group backed by GOP heavyweights Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie. “Barack Obama criticized the Supreme Court and his adversaries over the bogus charge of foreign money tainting elections — while leaders in his own party had taken more than a million dollars from the foreign cookie jar,” said Jonathan Collegio, a spokesman for American Crossroads. “The hypocrisy here is just stunning,” he told The Hill.

Despite President Obama and the Dems’ accusations, both the Chamber and American Crossroads have vehemently denied accepting foreign dollars for use in domestic political efforts and Democrats have acknowledged that they have no evidence that the groups are accepting money from abroad and using it to fund political messages. Instead, Dems argue that “in the absence of tougher campaign disclosure rules, it’s entirely possible,” The Hill reports.

“The overarching issue here is that we don’t know where these entities are raising money. It could be money from foreign corporation, big oil or companies that want to outsource U.S. jobs,” says Doug Thornell, a spokesman for Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

With the midterm elections only two weeks away, Democrats says they plan to continue attacking conservative groups over possible foreign funds enabling political attacks.

“I think it is having resonance,” Van Hollen said last week on MSNBC. “I think that people are understanding that there‘s this very important nexus between the special interests who are spending these millions of dollars and an agenda that doesn’t serve the interests of the American people.”

    Money money money…MONEY! It would be interesting to open everybody’s books. And those that have received cash from entities such as the communist party USA or progressive / socialist organizations (and yes I mean Unions too) who have treacherously subverted the Constitution should be brought up on charges. Can you imagine the frustration of members in the FBI and CIA who have been watching these organizations as a threat to our country when they find that they are major contributors to the crooked politicians who hold their careers in their hands? The Nazi party was socialist. The USSR was socialist. Red China-communist/socialist. You know what they all have in common? Genocide…Sure lets follow the money. And lets unmask these organizations and bring the leaders and members up on charges of treason-particularly when they speak about genocide as casually as William Ayers. Treason is a capitol crime….

I thought, after all the illegal contributions and foreign donations that Obama received during his 2008 campaign (maybe two or three hundred million) it would be a lot more than twice as much. Maybe the foreigners are getting wise to “O” and his hypocrisy, and are having buyer’s remorse. We can only hope!

    The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77

    The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%

    The Unemployment rate was 4.6%

    January 3, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over as Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over as Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

    The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?

    BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!

    Thank Congress for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment to this CRISIS by dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fiasco’s!

    (BTW: Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie – starting in 2001, because it was financially risky for the U.S. economy, but no one was listening).

    And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA.

    And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie??? OBAMA and the Democratic Congress.

    So when someone tries to blame Bush…

    Bush may have been in the car, but the Democrats were in charge of the gas pedal and steering wheel they were driving. Set the record straight on Bush!

    So, as you listen to all the commercials and media from the Democrats who are now distancing themselves from their voting record and their party, remember how they didn‘t listen to you when you said you didn’t want all the bailouts, you didn’t want the health care bill, you didn’t want cap and trade, you didn‘t want them to continue spending money we don’t have.

    I’m not forgetting their complicity in getting us into this mess, and I’ll be marking my vote accordingly!

    I’m not sure how this even compares to what the Obamanoids are droning on and on about. These PAC’s are accepting donations from CITIZENS of the US who are employed by non-US companies. The other side is falsely accusing the Chamber and Rove’s group of taking donations directly from foreign entities. Am I missing something? I don’t see the negative in these PACs. What’s wrong with a US Citizen donating their own funds?

      It’s not false since the Chamber openly admits that they take the money. The argument is over disclosure. As far as whether or not they spend that money on political ads or political contributions… it seems to me that, if all of the money goes into the same account, the money is all included in the budget. The Chamber says that they have internal processes to make sure that money isn’t spent on political activities… however, if you have an account with $10,000 in it and $2000 is foreign money that you use to pay bills… that frees up $2000 of your other money to spend on whatever else you want to spend it on. In my opinion, the Chamber should open a new account to place foreign money in and stop putting it in their general fund.

    The PACs are legally and legally taking money from US citizens who work for foreign companies, like line workers employed in Toyota plants in the US Midwest. However, the 501(c)3 money, which is new and enabled by Citizens United, is overwhelmingly going to the GOP (9-to-1 in the last three weeks), and it is totally anonymous. This means that any portion of it could be coming from abroad and no one will know. The Chamber of Commerce is likely a conduit, and while they deny breaking any laws, they also refuse to reveal any information that would prove or deny their claims. I wish that the Blaze would lament this problem as much as it does a de minimis amount of extra funds raised through disclosed funding channels not impacted by Citizens United. But that would require the Blaze to focus on news rather than propaganda and call out the GOP more than the Democrats–and both of those would run contrary to the narrative…

      KCMO, you cannot leave proof when you aren’t allowed to investigate. Now, even the SCOTUS, which wrote Citizens United, stated that the decision only made sense if laws were passed to require disclosure. And we know who has resisted those laws under threat of fillibuster: the GOP. NPR just did an investigative report on the anonymous money and calculated that it is going to Republicans at a 9-to-1 advantage, so there is no surprise as to why the GOP would threaten to fillibuster legislation that the SCOTUS said should be passed alongside Citizens United.

      AngryTexan, it isn’t propaganda when what I say is true–unlike 100% of the anonymously funded ads run in the last 3 weeks (all for Republicans), according to FActCheck.org. But you aren’t interested in the truth, just nonsense from like-minded people. Gotta love that echo chamber.

      Diamondback, your legal analysis is somewhat lacking. The SCOTUS is hawkish on the First Amendment in general and speech rights in particular, but even they have repeatedly stated that such a right is not absolute, which is why they can prohibit pornography and hate speech and crying “fire” in a crowded theater. They also wrote in Citizens that disclosure of donations should be required, so this is hardly a First Amendment issue around the anonymity of the ad funding…and you know it!

      Contrarian, first Soros did not impoverish the English with his trade; he made a bet that the market forces would win in a contest against the Central Bank of England and he was right. The impoverishment happened because of the market. Your grasp of finance is breathtakingly limited. Second, Soros is a US citizen. Third, you know about his donations because they are disclosed, unlike those of the richer Koch brothers who, unlike Soros, give money in a partisan manner but not because they think it will make the world better (the key motivation for Soros) but merely to enrich their privately held empire of companies. Shows you how much you know. And how much you don’t. Because of the lack fo disclosure that your poltical buddies resist. No wonder you’re in the dark. The rich want you to remain stupid and uninformed. And you thank them for it.

      U.S. Chamber of Commerce is 501(c)(6) not 501(c)(3). They are opperating under the law and the only thing that Citizen’s United ruling did for them was allowed them to put ads out within 60 days of this election.

      I wish people would do just a little research so that they understand what they believe and can back it up factually, not with emotionalism.

      Great post – excellent – kudos to you ABC. My thoughts are without true campaign finance reform, this is going to continue to be a problem but because of the Citizens United decision, it is doubtful that we will ever get any campaign finance reform. Plus, it is obscene the amount of money that this country spends (especially during a recession) on running for public office – basically candidates are buying their election to office. Is that what we want in this country? Is this covered in the Constitution?

      President Obama is supposed to be a Harvard Law graduate. He is throwing out accusations against the Chamber of Commerce and other conservative/GOP Pacs, with the full acknowledgment and understanding that there is no evidence to support these allegations.

      Question 1: Does Harvard’s law school not teach the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” or was Barry sick that day?

      Question 2: When did you two stop torturing animals and molesting children?

      The #1 reason for the Chamber to protect its donors list is to protect its donors.

      Radicals, who have already proven they are not above violence, are closely connected to this President.

      The IRS has done “random” audits of GB, Rush, SH, and others, more than once.

      Some of the President’s top advisers might be in jail for tax evasion right now, if not for their political connections.

      Also, don’t be fooled. The Dems know whats coming after the election.

      The Republicans will be forced to make unpopular decisions and the country will be in pain.

      The Democrats have played this game before. The MSM will try to help them pull it off again.

      Fortunately, far fewer people pay much attention to ABC, NBC, CBS or even NYT anymore.

      The American people are not as intellectually challenged as the Democrats seem to think.

      Just to rebut some of the nonsense arguments posted in reponse to my comment…

      First, I didn’t say the Chamber was a 501(c)3. I stated that the Chamber is a potential conduit of foreign money, in addition to those non-profits, and implied that the anonymity of donations to that organization allow them to funnel foreign money into elections without anyone knowing about it. The purpose of disclosure laws would be to prevent this. That the Chamber is resisting speaks volumes about what their motives could be with regard to this huge loophole that the Supreme Court warned about. Second, the lack of disclosure for small contributions by individuals is not at issue, since no one is worried about such amounts; they are too small to buy an election or create spurious motivations for politicians. Honestly, if you don’t understand that argument, then you are thinking only in terms of Dem vs. Republican rather than thinking systematically through whether elections are reflecting the will of the people as individuals or reflecting the will of an elite group of oligarchs or corporate interests that could easily be aligned against the general will of the people. I can’t believe how slow some people are… Third, no one has contested the fact that the money is overwhelmingly going toward Republicans, which explains why that party is not doing the right thing and listening to even the conservative justices on the Supreme Court who strongly advised that disclosure laws be enacted. Finally, personal attacks on me or the President of the US, do not change any of this analysis but merely reveal those making such attacks as dim-wits who don’t know how to think, reason or argue.

      MrObvious, I don’t work for CBS. I would like to respond to your comments. First, the Chamber’s first priority is to preserve the integrity of our democracy; it‘s donors’ interests are a distant second. We send our men and women into battle to protect freedom, not to protect corporate interests that are not really harmed by having their names placed on ads–especially if those ads have integrity (which currently they do not). Second, lots of people are randomly audited, so unless you can show that GB, Rush, et. al. have been audited at a higher and statistically significant rate than other wealthy people, then this is a non-argument. And even if you can establish that, then you‘ve merely proven that there are some bad actors in the gov’t–just like when the Bush minions put Teddy Kennedy on the no-fly list. It doesn’t have anything to do with my arguments for why we need disclosure laws. But thanks for trying to change the subject. I know how embarrassing it must be to watch the GOP act so badly. Third, I’m not sure why you think that the GOP will make the tough decisions. They haven’t really done so in the last 30-40 years. Nixon broke laws to win an election he was going to win anyway, probably because of paranoia and hubris. Reagan incurred a huge deficit–that he later admitted he regretted–and oversaw a net increase in the size of gov’t. And GW made Reagan look downright responsible with the nation‘s finances while growing gov’t more than any President in history. In fact, when we rank the completed four-year terms of our last six Presidents, we find that the most fiscally responsible Republican ran up the debt and deficits more than the least fiscally responsible Democrat. And the current group of “young guns,” cannot name more than 10% of the current budget deficit that they can cut, yet they are calling to preserve the tax cuts responsible for the structural budget deficit not merely for a couple of years to create stimulus during the current period of economic malaise, but permanently. This highlights how they haven’t really changed and how we can expect them NOT to make the tough decisions, which, incidentally, were made from the very start of the Clinton administration, when the Democrats still held power in Congress as well. The most responsible period in the last 40 years at the federal level was when the Dems held both Congress and the WH. Strange that you assume something will happen that hasn’t happened before. Do you also expect the sun to rise in the West come November 3rd??

      This is how its done in the book Rules for Radicals, by Saul Alinsky, all these attacks are described in the book at length and in detail… Obama taught Alinsky at the University of Chicago, he and his Comrades do what Icall the Alinsky Dance every chance they get, they identify, personalize, demonize, and then TRY to destroy… Only this time thats not going to happen.       And President Obama dares to criticize the Tea Party, the Republicans, and the Citizens of America as well. For some reason he still does not get the fact America belongs to American people who are still able to vote for change – get the Progressives heading down the road!!!

      Lets get some honest people of character in the Congress, and may the Almighty keep us safe to the election, and through the lame-duck congress following.

      Follow the link and read the article idjits. The contributions discussed are from American citizens from groups that have to disclose their sources. That‘s irrelevant to what’s going on.

      The Dems are talking about newly formed nonprofits spending unlimited amounts of money on attack ads, money that’s coming in from huge corporations and countries all over the world. Because of regulations for nonprofits, no disclosure of who is funding is required.

      You can cheer for the ban on unlimited corporate and foriegn funding of elections if you want, but if you think they’re looking out for the best interest of you and your family, you’re a little naive. They’re trying to take as much of your money you as the government will let them.

      Aren’t we pretty much alone in the world of conservatism with the exception of the ultra-conservative muslim demogogeries that it is?
