Department of Justice Names Two Special Prosecutors in Leak Case

Apparently the pre-emptive statements by the Department of Justice that they would not be doing probes into the recent leaks of sensitive national security information were premature. Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that he would be appointing not one, but two special prosecutors to lead probes into the leaks. Politico reports:

Attorney General Eric Holder on Friday named two federal prosecutors to oversee investigations into leaks of classified information that have roiled Congress and led to calls for a special prosecutor.

His decision came hours after President Barack Obama denounced the notion that the White House was engaging in politically motivated leaks and declared that he had “zero tolerance” for such national security breaches.

Holder tapped U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C,. Ronald Machen and U.S. attorney for Maryland Rod Rosenstein to head up the probes.

“These two highly-respected and experienced prosecutors will be directing separate investigations currently being conducted by the FBI,” Holder said in a statement Friday evening. “I have every confidence in their abilities to doggedly follow the facts and the evidence in the pursuit of justice wherever it leads.”

Holder indicated that the two prosecutors were “fully authorized to prosecute criminal violations discovered as a result of their investigations and matters related to those violations, consult with members of the Intelligence Community and follow all appropriate investigative leads within the Executive and Legislative branches of government.”

Read Holder’s full statement below:

Attorney General Eric Holder issued the following statement today on the assignment of U.S. Attorneys to lead investigations of possible unauthorized disclosures of classified information:

“Today, I assigned U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ronald C. Machen Jr. and U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein to lead criminal investigations into recent instances of possible unauthorized disclosures of classified information.

“These two highly-respected and experienced prosecutors will be directing separate investigations currently being conducted by the FBI.   I have every confidence in their abilities to doggedly follow the facts and the evidence in the pursuit of justice wherever it leads.

“In carrying out their assignments, U.S. Attorneys Machen and Rosenstein are fully authorized to prosecute criminal violations discovered as a result of their investigations and matters related to those violations, consult with members of the Intelligence Community and follow all appropriate investigative leads within the Executive and Legislative branches of government.

“I have notified members of Congress and plan to provide more information, as appropriate, to members of the Judiciary and Intelligence Committees.

“The unauthorized disclosure of classified information can compromise the security of this country and all Americans, and it will not be tolerated.    The Justice Department takes seriously cases in which government employees and contractors entrusted with classified information are suspected of willfully disclosing such classified information to those not entitled to it, and we will do so in these cases as well.”

With any luck, this will lead to answers as to the identity of the people involved in these unacceptable leaks.

      @ JAYCEN, from the AP:

” Currently, Machen is leading a high-profile political corruption probe of officials in the District of Columbia. The latest development in that investigation came this week when District of Columbia Council chairman Kwame Brown resigned after being charged with lying about his income on bank loan applications.

Before becoming U.S. attorney, Machen helped lead the white-collar and internal investigation practices at the prominent Washington law firm of WilmerHale. He served as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1997 to 2001.

Rosenstein was an associate independent counsel who worked for Whitewater prosecutor Ken Starr from 1995 to 1997. He was co-counsel in the fraud trial of Jim and Susan McDougal, the former real estate partners of Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Both of the McDougals were convicted in a trial that also resulted in the conviction of then-Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker.”

I just want to posit some speculation here. Eric Holder never said that both of these prosecutors would be assigned to finding out who leaked the information to the press. What he said was: “Today, I assigned U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ronald C. Machen Jr. and U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein to lead criminal investigations into recent instances of possible unauthorized disclosures of classified information.

I bet only one of them will be looking into the leaked information to the press. I believe the second one will be assigned to ferret out who released to the Congress the wiretap applications which would fall under his definition of “unauthorized disclosure of classified information.

He does not care one wit about the former, but I bet he is burning with anger to find out who the mole in his department is. The former is just cover for him to find out who the mole is, he could not very well go after him without at least a pro forma “attempt” to find the leaks to the press.

SCUBA13, LOL you just reminded me of the era of LBJ and when he ran for his next term after finishing the JFK term. Our state was totally a Southern Democrat only state and we never had a Republican governor until well into the ’80s because of Reconstruction. They had those stamped car tags of a strained Jackass (the mascot of the DNC) blowing a fart from it’s rectum with the statement“ LBJ Has Spoken” emblazened below it. That is how much that man was hated here, and those things showed up before the Civil Rights Bill. That in itself is a funny thing considering how much of a racist LBJ was. Try convincing a liberal of that now, but all you have to do is watch and listen to his speeches. Especially prior to his becoming the Vice President.
