Depressed Wis. Teacher Commits Suicide…Unions Blame Gov. Scott Walker

A middle-aged teacher with a history of depression committed suicide earlier this month, and the Wisconsin unionistas are blaming their boogeyman governor, Scott Walker, for her death:
Jeri-Lynn Betts, an early childhood teacher in the Watertown, Wisconsin, school district, died on March 8 of an apparent suicide.
A colleague says she was “very distraught” over Gov. Scott Walker’s attacks on public sector workers and public education.
Betts, 56, was a dedicated teacher who was admired in the Watertown community….
In the days after Betts’s death, two members of the school district contacted The Progressive about her death, calling it a suicide and saying it was connected, at least in part, to the policies that Walker has proposed. He has demanded that public workers, including teachers, contribute a significant amount of their salaries to health care and pensions. And in his budget, he proposed taking $900 million out of the public schools, imposing a freeze on property taxes so local governments can’t chip in more for education, and allowing any student, regardless of income, to go to a private school with a taxpayer subsidy.
“She was definitely very distraught about it,” said one of her co-workers, who requested anonymity. “She was feeling a lot of stress about the legislation that was going through.”
“She was concerned about the cuts teachers would have to take,” said another, who also requested anonymity. This co-worker added that Betts’s colleagues acknowledged her anguish about the governor’s policies in their discussions after her death.
Figuring out all the contributing factors behind a likely suicide is a complicated problem. Such deaths are in some ways incomprehensible—and always tragic.
But the report from the Watertown police gives some clues.
Here’s a clue–perhaps, even, the clue: “a long history of depression” caused Betts’ suicide.
And yet, the union members are unrelenting in their exploitation of her suicide:
Walker’s policies are placing a heavy strain on teachers, says Steve Cupery, the director of the Lakewood UniServ Council, the teachers’ union in Watertown.
“There’s a lot of stress, especially among older teachers,” he says. “They’re concerned about being targeted. And there’s the stress associated with the potential loss of benefits, which could amount to a substantial cut in pay.”
Cupery adds that teachers are worried about class sizes going up, increased workloads, and not being able to “develop curriculum material around the individual needs of students.”
Walker’s policies have “shredded the morale of teachers,” said Wisconsin State Assemblywoman Sondy Pope-Roberts on March 16. “The cuts to schools districts are going to be drastic.”
May Jeri-Lynn Betts rest in peace.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 7:15pmIt’s imperative that conserrvatives come together and make as much “noise” as the opposition. It‘s difficult because we aren’t used to being politically outspoken but we have to try. Use the internet to make our views heard. It’s such a temptation to just throw up our hands and say, whatever but WE CAN”T do that because it’s exactly what they want.

No one wants anyone to committ suicide but lets get real, there is not a working person in AMERICA DESERVES his insurance and retirement paid by the taxpayers. So lets put the blame on what it is, an unstable woman, who didnot realize that this too shall pass. May God have mercy on her soul.meh

Why in the world would she be allowed to continue teaching “early childhood classes”? I wouldn’t want my children around someone like that. How many more of them are there? From what I saw of the “good educators” at the Wisconsin Statehouse I’m glad my kids are grown.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 7:57pmIt’s a good thing I am not Scott Walker. I’d just bow out, let them have it and wait for the whole State to go down the tubes and none of them have a job. That is just what they deserve. I know that the unions will be so very concerned about all the taxpayers being out of work, because who would pay the salaries of their Union employees, who in turn pay those Union dues. I too, question the intelligence of having a teacher “with a history of depression” in a classroom situation with a bunch of children. I feel bad for her, I have suffered depression also, but I wasn’t responsible for a room full of school children. I will pray for her and for Scott Walker..to H3II with the Union thugs.

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 5:26pmThere is a good reason for your depression. Who could be extremely “happy” being out of a job when they really would prefer to be working? These are difficult times for lots of people. When you are feeling down, please talk to someone, even if it is with your cyber-friends. If you have a Bible, read the verses about how he knew you as you were developing in the womb and how you were wonderfully made (Psalm 139:13-14) , how nothing can keep you from the Love of Christ (Romans 8:35-39). You are more than a conqueror. I think you already know those verses. But if you haven’t already, please consider memorizing them.

I have suffered all my life (50+ yrs) with depression. The anti-depression drugs that came out in the 90′s help me tremendously. I too am a responsible adult with a career, and am a parttime caregiver for my spouse. With clinical depression every single little thing one does throughout the day is a major hurtle to get across, from deciding to wash your face all the way to giving a presentation before the board of directors.
But with medication life becomes do-able and actually joyful for most. I cannot emphasize enough how cripling depression is, and if you havn’t had it, I can understand how you have trouble understanding it….

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 9:35amBluebonnet, what you have described is a fairly normal response to the horrible things one can experience in this life. I think you put it into words very well. Please thank God that you have developed a rational view of these things.
More than one person on this thread has said “Suicide is a selfish and cowardly.” I can understand that sentiment, but I disagree. Those who are survivors of suicide, are left with tons of baggage to process. We blame ourselves for not seeing it in time. We blame ourselves for not treating this person differently. We blame ourselves for not being as kiind or loving as we could have been. We blame ourselves…….., and it goes on and on. To call our loved one selfish or a coward, causes a swell of emotions in our hearts. That’s mean (but I know you do not realize that). We want the memory of our loved one to be the good that was within them, the happy times, the laughter, the love and kindness. Please consider that they were just so down that they couldn’t see up. They don’t always show that, they are experts at hiding their dark thoughts and deep depression – in my experience. My lesson learned is that you can’t always tell where a person is mentally, so if you have friends and loved ones, tell them you love them and how special they make you feel. If you feel you don’t have friends and loved ones, seek someone out and tell them how you are feeling. Those left behind have a lot to process, and it can take years or a lifetime. It certainly does not help when others point fingers of blame at you. Wow can that hurt. Depression is no fun, and most people do experience it at one time or another. For those who select suicide as a solution, I feel so sorry for. If they could only wait, things would change. They always do. Mark Lowery, a singer and comedian once said he loved the Bible verse “this too shall change.” If things are going badly, stick around because this too shall change. If you are on top of the world – stick around, this too shall change.
If anyone reading this is considering suicide, or has ever considered suicide as a solution, please tell someone who cares about you, please do this now.
If anyone reading this has been left behind recently by a suicide, please visit http://forsuicidesurvivors.com/. Please do this now.
Thanks to everyone who has posted their thoughts. It does not matter whether I consider them “good” or “bad.” But it is important that we share our thoughts and can discuss them in a civil manner.
I agree with sleazyhippo, that the title of this story was not truthful or factual. But I’m glad it did attract such a variety of responses. Please forgive me for not loving you all as I should. I‘m human and I’m learning and trying. I really dislike it when someone comes here with that condescending, holier than thou attitude that conservatives are uneducated dullards that don’t read and are easily led. That stereotype should have been nipped in the bud long ago, yet it seems to be what those on the left use to rationalize how anyone can think differently than they think. To those who do that, it’s bogus. You’ve been taught wrong and apparently have little experience with anyone other than your mirror image. Get out more.

NO ONE is to blame for this. Ppl who commit suicide have serious mental problems that they feel the only way out of a bad situation is to kill themselves. I find this to be the most cowardice act one can commit b/c they let whatever get to them. Before anyone trounces on me let me tell you I have been through the ringer so much so that ppl in my situation HAVE offed’ themselves. Im still here taking blow after blow… you have no idea! Depression, desperation, uselessness you name Ive been there but I am here fighting… fighting for you me and everyone else (listening Blaze staff? you want story talk to me, instead of deleting my posts!!)
I would never give in to the ups and down of life and put my family in misery my taking my own life. Killing yourself and them blaming the system is deplorable. Those blaming Walker should be ashamed of themselves and putting blame on him and everything going on is shameful. Furthermore you want a finger to blame?
Blame the union heads, corrupt politicians and special interests that have created this mess of entitlement and exuberant spending. The system cant handle it and real “change” is being put forth to correct this nonsense in the system. There is always help seek it out…….

So get off the blaming someone else. What if it had been an unruly child that ticked her off, do you go around blaming that child? She was in no condition to teach children if she was this bad off. “Top ten ways to tell if you might be a member of a public-sector union” By David Letterman.
10.) You take a week off to protest in Wisconsin and your office runs better.
9.) On a snow day, when they say “non-essential” people should stay home you know who they mean.
8.) You get paid twice as much as a private sector person doing the same job but make up the difference by doing half as much work.
7.) It takes longer to fire you than the average killer spends on death row.
6.) The worse you do your job, the more your boss avoids you.
5.) You think the French are working themselves to death.
4.) You know by having a copy of the Holy Koran on your desk your job is 100% safe.
3.) You spend more time at protest marches than at church.
2.) You have a Democratic congressman’s lips permanently attached to your butt.
And the #1 way to tell if you might be a member of a public sector union:
1.) You pay more in union dues than you do for your healthcare insurance.

Trumka is directly associated with Soro’s, So are all the Unions in Wisconsin. I wonder if they realize the person in charge of directing their Union bosses wants to destroy America, litteraly. Along with Clinton. I didn‘t realize the Clinton’s were so very anti-america!!
Hillary and Gerorge soul mates, check out this small piece— “More importantly, Soros discovered in Hillary Clinton an ideological soulmate. Mrs. Clinton shared his aversion to U.S. “hegemony.” Like Soros, she sought to subordinate U.S. interests to global interests; U.S. sovereignty to global government; U.S. law to global courts; U.S. wealth to global taxation; and U.S. productivity to a scheme for global income redistribution. She also shared Soros’ hostility to Israel. Soros and Mrs. Clinton formed a friendship based upon their mutual beliefs. When the Clintons left office, Soros dedicated himself to restoring Hillary to the White House. ”
No joke, we are up against more than I ever realized. Check out this link at “Discoverthenetworks.org”, I mean, Beck mentioned a lot of these connections, but I didn’t realize how broad the entire “Shadow Party” was. This is how he took down other governments. I HIGHLY suggest taking the tie to check this out.

When you let Marxist enemies of America – like Barack Obama – tell you different, you end up with people who expect their livelihood to be dependent on public work.
The Progressives LIED to us, and they want to destroy America by increasing the size of government, WHICH INCLUDES PUBLIC TEACHERS.
Well the taxpayers cannot afford this size of government, and so we are taking OUR money that pays your public sector wages and benefits, and we’re doing with it what WE want with OUR money.
We the taxpayers demand that government stop spending our money against our consent in the context of our Constitutional Republic.

I have no idea where you would get that as a fact or doctrine. It sure is not Bible. If you say “thou shalt not kill” I think I will jump. That is properly translated as MURDER and that is defined as malice aforethought of killing another human.
Family and friends will feel the effect as in all deaths with a more complex or dull reaction because of the perceived guilt transferred to them by the public.

If Judas is the example used to make suicide a sin then someone needs to read much closer. Judas had to betray Jesus to fulfill prophecy, Matt 26-27. Once Judas realized Jesus would not deliver himself Judas felt remorse, threw the money into the Temple and left to hang himself. Jesus had said woe to the one who would betray or identify him in the garden only because he knew the sorrow it would bring to that person. Judgment to hell was not made. Hades as a side note is Greek for “holding place” until judgment BTW.

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 2:37amCivil service has been a place to hide. It was a good shelter when the economy was bad. As time went by the economy grew and people could not see where the money was coming from and it seemed an endless supply. They formed unions though unlawful for a civil servant to do so. Therefore, the money and benefits keep rolling in and one day the economy failed, the dwindling workforce could not keep up the pace of the taxes needed for dead weight.

Maybe it was the socialist delusion that the unions indoctrinate its memeber into that caused his depression. Maybe it was guilt from using extorsion to get what he had as opposed to using his talent and intelligence. Maybe it was fear that the unions bring if he ever did want to speak out against extorsion and socialismt that caused his depression. Whatever the reason, my dad was a depressed and depresseing union brainwashed socialist loser, who taught his 2 sons the lie that if you are non-union, you are either taking advantage of someone or you are being taken advantage of by someone. In the end, he was taken advantage of by the unions and he was depressed.
