Des Moines Register Endorses Romney

Des Moines Register Endorses Romney

Citing the candidate’s “sobriety, wisdom and judgement” the editorial board of The Des Moines Register, Iowa’s largest and most influential newspaper, announced Saturday night that Mitt Romney would receive their GOP caucus endorsement.

The largest newspaper in the key early caucus state commended Romney’s intelligence combined with a willingness to admit when he has been wrong.

“Romney disagrees with Democrats on most issues, but he offers smart and well-reasoned alternatives rather than simply proposing to swing a wrecking ball in Washington,” wrote the Register editorial board.

In 2008, the newspaper endorsed John McCain who finished tied for a distant third in Iowa, but would go on to secure the GOP nomination.

“Mitt Romney is making his second bid for Iowans’ support after an unsuccessful run in 2008. We did not endorse him then, but this is a different field, and he has matured as a candidate. Rebuilding the economy is the nation’s top priority, and Romney makes the best case among the Republicans that he could do that.”

While Evangelical Christians make up approximately 60 percent of voters in Iowa’s GOP caucus, the Register editorial board did not shy away from scolding Romney’s rivals who “have pandered to extremes with attacks on the courts and sermons on Christian values.” The newspaper praised the former Massachusetts governor for refraining from reckless rhetoric and moralizing.

The endorsement may come as a surprise considering that Romney has received criticism from some Iowa conservatives for putting less resources into campaigning in the hawk-eye state when compared to Romney’s efforts in Nevada and New Hampshire.

Romney ranks third in current polls of likely Iowa GOP caucus goers, behind Newt Gingrich followed by Ron Paul. The paper said of Romney’s top competitors: “Newt Gingrich is an undisciplined partisan who would alienate, not unite, if he reverts to mean-spirited attacks on display as House speaker. Ron Paul’s libertarian ideology would lead to economic chaos and isolationism, neither of which this nation can afford.”

Of the “flip-flopper” label frequently attached to Romney, the newspaper writes that Romney has evolved from a one-time independent to a moderate Republican in a liberal state to a proud conservative today.

“Though Romney has tended to adapt some positions to different times and places, he is hardly unique. It should be possible for a politician to say, ‘I was wrong, and I have changed my mind.’”

The endorsement comes just 17 days before Iowans will gather on January 3 to vote on a Republican nominee. Romney invested heavily in Iowa four years ago, only to finish second. AP reports that his advisers have kept in touch with supporters of his 2008 campaign.

Romney will never be a Reagan, maybe Rick Perry could, Bachmann or Santorum, but not Mitt. I was very disappointed in Nicki Haley when she endorsed Romney bc “I KNOW IT WAS A YOU SCRATCH MY BACK, I’ll SCRATCH YOURS” endorsement.

Seems TPTB are gonna succeed in picking our candidate for us again. Oh well, we’ll just smile, pick up the crumbs, and vote for the lesser-of-two-evils, once again.
      It’s all fairly disheartening, sometimes.
If Rand were running, instead of Ron, I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the lever for him. But dad is looking shaky and weak, and at times, nutty. The comment about Bachmann was way over the top.

SANTORUM. That’s the ticket. If even for just for now (Iowa) – keep him in the game!! He could be as close as we are going to get to a Reagan presidency. Vote for him…just do it. It’s still only the primaries. Mitt would still be a decent fall-back choice if it comes to it but for now, all of you Iowans have a great responsibility to put in an electable conservative as our nominee. Don’t shoot your wad on Romney…..yet

If Romney gets the Nomination The people once again will not have picked the candidate. Romney is getting full support either like from the Register or backdoor support like from Glenn Beck constantly chipping away at the strongest candidate who is not Romney. I hope the establishment and Glenn Beck are not successfull in Nominating Romney with their Propaganda/PR.

That was an excellent endorsement. The Evangelicals are so blinded by bigotry and hate, they remind me of the other Taliban who hates Israel irrationally. This endorsement was well written and well thought out. Evangelicals refuse to see any good in Romney because of his religion. Evangelicals are willing to throw our country away and get a second rate candidate (newt). Newt should be in jail, not running for the presidency. My first choice is Michelle B, but I can tell she won’t win the general, so I am backing Mitt. This country deserves our finest, not some pseudo religious candidate to keep the Christian Taliban happy.

“If he is the GOP nominee, the nation would have a clear choice in November 2012.”

There is NO “clear” choice between romney and obama…

      I don‘t understand why we can’t have a Conservative candidate for President…

I am weary of always having to vote for “the lesser of two evils”…

When are the American Conservative voters going to stand up and say: “NO MORE!!!” ???

I, for one, refuse to vote for another liberal loser like romney, newt, or perry…

I don’t want the media to tell me who to vote for. I really want to hear more of what Santorum has to say. He is a good man with a good, moral background. They don’t seem to give him a chance to speak which tells me they are biased in who they want in. In what I do hear from Rick, I’m liking him more and more. I believe his ratings are low because the media won’t give him a chance. Please don’t let the media push you into voting for who they want in. We don’t have to be following them like sheep. We can think for ourselves. We should pray that God will give us widsom who to vote for.

I support Romney. I have researched his background and as a Tea Partier, I know he would be the best to run against Obama. Not just that he is the most-electable.

Here is what I have found in my research. Romney shrunk the state of Massachusetts by more than any other governor in the Northwest in history, till his time? He cut crony capitalism in the state, and cut taxes over 19 times, tried dozens of more times? Romney laid off more government workers than any other state in during his time as governor. Turned around a $3 billion deficit and created a $2 billion rainy day fund. And the praise given him during the last debate from Gingrich was just the tip of what he can do.

Here is his last video and look strong against Obama: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2011/dec/romney_ad_another.html

I remember the great job ROMNEY did on the OLYMPICS…now…if he would adapt a tax program similar to 9-9-9 and ditch the 51 pager, I’d be totally with him. NO one else can do it. Write PAUL, BACHMANN, Huntsman off for being unlikeable. Perry should run for Senate seat being vacated by Hutcheson in TX; Santorum should get back in Senate and run another time. Romney is good and can beat Obama in Debate too. There are a lot of PAUL fanatics on this board, but boys (average age 20) your guy lost it this last debate with his nutzoid beliefs that Iran won’t get – then won’t use Nucs. Top_Down… Haha, nice history lesson for us… “Romney shrunk the state of Massachusetts by more than any other governor in the Northwest in history”… So Romney governed in the Northwest? If anyone wants to look this up and see if Top_Down is being truthful, google Massachusetts CAFR. This will give a you a link to the official MA state government website, which has Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports going back to the 90′s. Check out the total government expenses the year before Romney became governor and compare it to his last year. He GREW the MA government. He also increased the long-term debt per capita for MA citizens.

If Harry Ried were running on the GOP side he would be even worse in my mind that Paul even though he is mormon. Although I agree that Romney will likely win Utah because of mormon sheeple, it is unfair to cast this rather large net over Mormons. I do not know anyone in my mormon circles who really like Romney. Now flip the coin and I think there are a lot of people who will not vote for Romney because of his faith. Is this bigoted? Probably. Unless the candidate is an atheist, or devil worshiper I think we should drop the religion thing and look at their policies and who can do the best job. Right now that person looks like Santorum, but he has about a snowballs chance at this point. Wait a minute, what is his religion, I’ll somehow become bigoted against it for no apparent reason.

      @CatB,

“So what did Ron Paul do about “seeing” the collapse? What has Ron Paul done in his time in Congress?”

Do you understand the republican form of government? No individual Congressman CAN do anything.

He did what he was supposed to do: represent his constituents in accordance with the Constitution.

      @CatB,

Also, the government’s not supposed to DO much of anything. It’s supposed to protect individual inalienable rights and stay out of the economy; That’s about it.

The fact that you want to see what Congressmen have DONE means that you think government CAN do something – and apparently you think it can do a lot of things, since you’re not being too specific about what you think would qualify as “doing something”.

Government is the CAUSE of bad economies. Once you understand this, you will hope that government just stops trying to do a LOT of what it does.

I’m a Mormon and I think Romney is a joke. I also think his son Top_Hatter is a joke for thinking he governed in the Northwest and for spreading lie that he shrunk government. Look at the audited CAFR for MA… He clearly grew the government. Look it up for yourselves. Try making some factual arguments Craig.

I saw a poll yesterday that said 48% thought Barry should get a second term. That is just astounding to me.Another four yrs would bring this contry to a place that people cant imagine..
My father is 87yo,he talks about growing up during the depression in SE Missouri. He talks about living in a barn and snow blowing in the cracks.Him and his brother and sister slept together to keep warm. They share cropped, they chopped and picked cotton. They didnt go to school because they needed the 1. a day for working the farm.
Occasionaly when he was telling a story he would say a couple of times they went on starvation. One time I asked what that meant did you get something from the government. He said no that just meant they wouldn’t have anything to eat.
I guess my thoughts are is that what its going to take for people to see that whats been happening for 70 years is going to take us down?
I don‘t agree with the people who say if we collapse we can’t come back, but people are going to suffer for a long time.
I beleive the way we go so goes the world but there would be a lot of suffering.
I was in Vietnam, the Phillipines,Okinawa,I saw how people were lucky to get a handful of rice.Folks dont kid yourself it could happen here in a few years

I hear you! People don’t have a clue as to how it could be. Most people in this country can’t even begin to imagine how war and starvation can be. We are blessed by God….but many have become nothing more than spoiled brats with their hands out demanding an entitlement.

FALSE, moralizing, sir. Don’t let them slip that one by you–subject religion to the same demanding standards of rational validation that literally EVERY OTHER IDEA we encounter is subjected to before we believe it (accept it is ‘true’, or at least, true until proven otherwise).

Why would people support mitt when he‘s help create this mess over the past 30 yr’s? This leopard is not going to change his spot‘s overnight and my neighbor think’s he’s only in this to split the rep vote so obama can stay in office. And I kinda believe it.

You obviously haven’t read up on your candidates. Mitt was a governor of MA…how did that create the mess we are in? He had a democrat state, a democrat house and senate to work with, and he stayed within his STATE powers to pass laws. He is a team player. Do you think a hard core right candidate can win the general? (Answer: no). Can you say the same about Obama’s politics? Can you say the same about Newt?

Endorsements will happen. Read the reasons why an endorsement is given before critisizing it by saying foolish things like “republican rinos trying to pick our candidates”. That is foolishness and stinks of arnachy and progressive trolling. I’d rather have Romney than Newt.
Sarah Palin will be speaking up pretty soon. The whiny babies will be shedding big tears when that happens.

And one more thing….for you people who continually bring up the issue about Mitt Romneys religion,
IT DOES NOT MATTER that he is Morman. He could ba a Jew and it wouldn’t matter. Those who keep bringing this up are only trying to create divisions and destroy unity. You’re the one with the problem with it because it is you who keeps bringing it up. It’s possible for someone to be a Christian and in the Mormon church. Same with Cathlics…that was an issue with JFK too. Didn’t matter. What matters is to they have Christian values. I’m sick of hearing the bigoted trolling. Get a life!

I do care about his religion as should anybody. But it is his actions and his motives that carries them that is what we worry about.

I care about him being or claiming to be a mormon as I do a christian. It is about his convictions.

I don‘t like him for policies and that’s it. I don’t like pollutions expel one that are self proclaimed progressive.

My point is to all of the mormon on this site that are trying to claim and insinuate that all of the anti-Romney people are bigots and only care about religion. Look in the mirror. Romney sucks because he is a big government progressive.

Don‘t put your faith in maybe might Be’s. Put your passion and support in your convictions by their actions.

There is no comparison between Romney and Reagan. Reagan was an intellectual and a movement conservative. He read and gave ideological speaches. He was a leader even before his speach at the Goldwater Convention in ‘64.

Romney is not a conservative by great conviction. He is not a man of ideas. He does not communicate in great ideas. His conservatism is more temperamental and moral than intellectual. At base he is more of a moderate. Let’s not kid ourselves.

Steelhead, while I am not a fan of Mormonism from a theological point of view, I would have no problem voting for a Mormon. My issue with Romney is that he tells people what they want to hear, he has no principles. I truly believe that the constitution will soon come under attack by a large number of people in the US. Someone will need to stand by their principles and hold the republic together. I think that Mitt will cave to the radicals if they are numerous and loud enough.
