Despite MSNBC Pimping ‘The Event’ – It Remains A Non-Event

Yesterday MSNBC invested considerable time plugging the return of parent network NBC‘s prime time program ’The Event.’ After a three month hiatus, the political/sci-fi series that debuted last September and delivered less than exciting ratings, was back.
The relaunch of ‘The Event’ was heavily promoted all weekend on the NBC, but also embedded into the MSNBC schedule yesterday and included an appearance on Chris Jansing’s mid-morning program:
‘It’s finally back!’ Oof.
It could be said that fill-in host Richard Lui did his cross-platform promotional job well, and the big bosses upstairs should be pleased.
But wait, there’s more!
At 5pm, in the middle of a show called ‘Hardball,’ Mr. Hardball himself, Chris Matthews had his own little ‘Event’ moment:
Alas, even the acting of Chris Matthews could not save this show. Preliminary overnight ratings for ‘The Event’ are not good. One network exec looked at the numbers and just said, ‘Dead in the water.’
Here is a quick snapshot of the overnight ratings from 56 markets, the number on the far right is the rating. For comparison, ‘House’ was delivering a 7.4 rating in the 8pm hour.
The two-hour block of programming (the first hour was for catching up, the second hour – an all new episode) finished dead last among the top four networks, behind ABC‘s ’The Bachelor’ – a new episode of ”House on Fox and even losing to reruns on CBS. A concern to any TV exec would be the steady drop from the first half-hour to the end. Perhaps the only bright spot of the night for NBC was the fact that viewers who left the channel between 8-10pm managed to come back in greater numbers, giving a rare 10pm win to the peacock network and Kathy Bates’ new show, ‘Harry’s Law.’
Obvious to most viewers are the editorial leanings of a news organization. It is a part of the new reality of cable news. What irritates this gadfly is when networks impose vertical integration agendas on an audience. Fox News Channel would prompt cringes each time they kicked in to American Idol promotion mode. Thankfully, and for whatever reason, FNC has significantly slowed down the ‘Idol chatter.” Here’s hoping the brains at MSNBC point to this failed experiment as reason to avoid wasting valuable air time in the future.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 5:32pmOh, and I forgot to say that it’s a shame Blair Underwood could not get a vehicle worth his talent. Bring back LA Law with all the original actors. LOL

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 5:30pmAfter NBC and ABC canceled Heroes and Lost, the only channels I watch in prime time are CBS and Fox. And yes I’m hooked on American Idol, but like the FNC, it doesn’t need promoting.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 4:13pmWhy would the try to promote it on MSNBC when they can get the promos to at least three times as many if they promoted it on Fox News?

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 4:06pmNBC’s promos are lost one me. I never even turn to that channel for any reason. Especially not mindless drivel!

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 3:48pmI kind of like The Event because I like sci-fi, but there were a couple of noticeable propaganda comments in some of the dialog, related to Alaska and childhood obesity. If it continues or gets worse I’ll probably stop watching.
I became interested in watching Harry’s Law when I saw that Kathy Bates would be starring in it. I only made it through two episodes before I was so sickened by the blatant propaganda I couldn’t watch any more. I even went so far as to take notes on the things that were said:
“…Say what you want about…China…, but their one child policy program is the most historic, most meaningful step taken by any country to improve the well-being of society.”
“Of all the things threatening to doom our world, global warming, nuclear proliferation, BP…, the biggest threat is over-population. Too many people.”
“It’s a really big deal to go to the Ohio Supreme Court. That’s where law is made.”
“…45 million Americans live below the poverty line…We really don’t give a crap. You saw what happened when we went about passing health care. We had a revolt.”
“We let our poor starve, we let them get sick.”
Harriet Korn (Kathy Bates), regarding her client, an elderly woman on trial for the crime of armed robbery, which was indisputably depicted on video surveillance: “…she sits here in shame having to endure. Trust me, there‘s nothing you can really do to this woman that the government hasn’t already done.” The verdict – not guilty! It was so preposterous I never watched another episode.
Law and Order: SVU is another one I quit watching because it got too preachy. NBC sure likes to insert their version of spin into the dialog in their shows!

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 3:21pmThat’s just great! Our family rather enjoyed this show. But sounds like it will soon become another continuing series type of show, that will be cancelled before they give us an “final ending”. Just like Flash Forward and Invasion from other networks. Not sure I’ll be tuning in for anymore programs with a continued story line from week to week, as it ends up being a total waste of my time.

CC. Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Joe Scarboroiugh, and The Rest of the Idiots
We have a tanking economy, a lunatic at the prsidential switch, global terrorism and violence, union unrest and violence……….and you are ONLY concerned that “The Event” returns to enlighten the already slow of wit! Why do you think they call television the “Boob Tube”????

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 10:07amI liked the show, thought that it was a cross between X-Files and Lost with a little “24” mixed in. Then NBC put up some talent/singing/dancing be judged show in Nov/Dec and I haven’t watched NBC since. Checked the NBC website for when it would be coming back and saw nothing about it, so I assumed that it was cancelled then. Didn’t know that it was even coming back.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 9:43amThe Event is not confusing if you have an IQ over 0.00000001 and although I don’t like the network it is on, I still find the show interesting. Now if The Walking Dead would come back soon, we’d be in business.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 12:35pmIf there‘s something I like it’s the whole omega man/zombie apocalypse thing. And The Walking Dead is excellent with character building in an end of civilation setting. I have the first series on disk and really can’t wait for the second. Truthfully AMC just seems to be on fire Breaking Bad ,Madmen,TWD,and the series The Killing is looking pretty interesting.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 9:42amIt’s not a bad show at all. Rather intriguing, really. And it has nothing at all to do with the libbies over at MSNBC. I think it’s a shame it is likely to not last much longer.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 8:56amI‘ve preety much gave up on NBC even it’s local news coverage the only time it’s ever on at my house is if there is a sporting event that I want to watch on it. Other then that it’s a useless unwanted channel on my home entertainment center.
