Despite Obama Admin Rift, Cardinal Dolan Announces He’ll Now Be Giving Closing Prayer at the DNC

In a move that some will certainly deem shocking, Cardinal Timothy Dolan says he’ll now be giving the closing prayer at both the Democratic and Republican conventions. The New York Roman Catholic leader made the fascinating announcement Tuesday through his spokesman.
After GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced last week that Dolan would offer the benediction at this week’s Republican Convention (RNC) in Tampa, Florida, some Catholic liberals criticized Dolan’s appearance. In voicing their outrage, they said it gave the impression he was endorsing Romney.
But, according to The New York Post, Dolan had already reached out to Democratic officials weeks ago to let them know about his RNC appearance. This, according to his spokesman, Joseph Zwilling, was done in an effort to show President Barack Obama and the left that his move wasn’t politically-motivated.
“He wanted to make sure that they knew that this was not a partisan act on his part and that he would be just as happy and grateful to accept an invitation from the Democrats as he would to have received one from the Republicans,” Zwilling told The Post.
“He has not been contacted by them [since],” the spokesperson added late last week.
The Democratic snub was previously confirmed by Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, last week as well. Donohue, who told The Post that he spoke with Dolan about the lack of an invite, had plenty to say about what he perceived as foolishness for not originally including the Catholic faith leader.
“The Republicans are smart enough to get the ‘pope of America,’ and the Democrats are stupid enough not to invite him,” Donohue said on Thursday. ”The Catholic vote is the most critical vote. They’re the wild card. So, why wouldn’t you ingratiate yourself to the pope of America and send a wink and a nod to Catholics? That’s just good politics.”
Despite this angst, something apparently changed between last week and today, with Dolan now announcing his participation in the DNC. Now, this choice to attend and offer a prayer is a fascinating development for a variety of reasons.
First and foremost, Dolan is the president of the U.S. bishops’ conference, so he is in a position of great influence. But secondly — and more importantly — he‘s also an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama’s mandate that employers provide health insurance that covers birth control.
While Dolan had apparently not wanted to appear partisan, his stance against select Obama administration regulations has been clear. Of particular note is the controversial contraceptive mandate. Dolan has made it clear — both rhetorically and through a lawsuit he’s leading against the federal government — that the regulation forces the Catholic Church to violate its conscience on the birth control front.
In addition to calling administration officials out for allegedly lecturing the bishops earlier this year, he dubbed the mandate “morally toxic” and lambasted the president’s attempt to “define ministry.”
However, it seems Dolan is intent on bridging as much of a divide as he possibly can, even in spite of the legal challenge he and other Catholics have waged against Obama (he also recently invited Obama to a charity dinner — another surprising olive branch of sorts).
Prior to Dolan’s DNC announcement, Democratic strategist James Carville quipped that the Democrats should invite Sister Simone Campbell (“Nuns on the Bus”) to the DNC to counter Dolan’s RNC appearance. While there’s no evidence that this was under actual consideration, Dolan’s willingness to work with the Democrats could be an attempt to temper some of the storm surrounding the ideological and theological divide between the bishops and sisters.
Regardless, the new-found news of his participation in the DNC will certainly temper more progressive Catholics who have waged criticism his way.

By praying at this convention this church leader is committing hypocrisy and a lot of “do as we say and not as we do.“ Atheists are supremely less hypocritical than these ”so-called” Christians. Catholics call themselves Christian. Christian‘s supposedly follow God’s Word. God’s Word speaks against homosexuality and reminds us that God created us in the womb.

Hope his prayer is better received at the DNC than the two-hour anti-Christian/Jew/American festival they will be hosting earlier.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 7:43pmThere is hypocrisy on both sides. The Blaze does, unfortunately, have a substantial following of close-minded people that claim to be Christians. They reject all of the evidence presented by Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and refuse to even think about it. Darwin wrestled 20+ years on whether to publish his book or not. I don’t see why Christians see this as an attack on their religion. Science is not your enemy. It does get controversial when Atheists like Dawkins take Darwin’s theory and add their own personal spin – that‘s why I don’t take Dawkins seriously. Christians denounce it and rely on “Christian Science” – which is total propaganda – when trying to explain historical events.
If a Christian follows Jefferson’s advice about “question with boldness even the existence of a God” then they are denounced by their fellow Christians as a heretic. There are so many versions of Christianity and their beliefs conflict with each other. Whether you realize it or not, your parents and peers indoctrinated you with their beliefs (this applies to everyone). I think most people believe what is most convenient for them and that belief dictates their actions.

The generic bill of rights grants to me the same “inalienable rights” as my houseplants (ecosystem) and states that these inalienable rights for man and plant alike originate from people (little g).
If this person or bag of organic stuff doesn’t soon organize a neighborhood association, a film festival, a block party, a newsletter, my rights will be equal to those of a houseplant.

Dolan accepted on the premise that if Obama does win another term, that Dolan’s appearance at the convention will somehow buy them leanency on the birth control portion of Obamacare.

He refuses to do the will of the people. Catholics overwhelmingly do not want Dolan associating with Obama as long as he has views and plans that go against the beliefs of the church.

He doesn’t pander to anyone including the catholic congregation or the POTUS. He answers to his god. I cannot believe the vitriol coming from some of the people who post here. Also if you read the article you’ll see that the Cardinal was NOT asked to attend…even as late as the end of last week. The cardinal is doing what he supposed to do, praying for everyone and putting the rest in God’s hands.

1. Untrue. While the Supreme Court has not ever ruled directly on presidential eligibility and the definition of “natural born,“ it is generally taken to mean ”born on US soil.” If not, it is up to Congress to bring the issue up during session; it has not done so. If you wish to petition your state senators, feel free to do so. I‘m sure they’ll be motivated to act by your evidence.
2. Has no bearing on whether or not he is natural born. Dual citizenship has absolutely no bearing on disqualification in the Constitution. Ironic you’d claim as much, considering your name.

The 14th Amendment defines citizenship this way: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” But even this does not get specific enough. As usual, the Constitution provides the framework for the law, but it is the law that fills in the gaps. The Constitution authorizes the Congress to do create clarifying legislation in Section 5 of the 14th Amendment; the Constitution, in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 4, also allows the Congress to create law regarding naturalization, which includes citizenship.
Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in the gaps left by the Constitution. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are “citizens of the United States at birth:”

One of the main tenants of the Christian faith and it’s various branches including Catholics should be pro-life. If you call yourself a Christian then how can you support a political party the decratic party that is blatantly pro abortion and now pro homosexual marriage. And in my opionion anti-religious freedom on so many levels. I’m wondering how even the “Black Evangelicals” as they are named by the DNC can support Obama when he has been consistently the most Pro-abortion senator and now President. Where are their Morals and what true God do they follow. How can you be an Evangelical Pastor, Catholic Priest and preach the words of Jesus Christ while in the shadows(or in plain sight) support the Democrats. It reminds of the teachings of the False teachers and the Judas’s that will appear as the day gets closer. If you are a Chrisitan and voting for the democrats, you should be ashamed of yourselves and need to check what God you are serving.

When asked what is the most important commandment during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said it is to love one’s neighbour. This why real Christians usually vote Democrat.

However, many so-called Christians have gone along with these policies for years. The liberal agenda in either party is evil. It has moved into both parties and the results have been moral decay for decades now.
I believe the Christian of today has very little knowledge of what the Bible says. They go to Sunday and listen to a preacher rather than check it out for them self. So dangerous. It’s hard to find a truly Bible preaching pastor.
If we can get Romney in this time, maybe we can get a Tea Party candidate in next time. However, with our liberal media, that will be very hard to do.
Christians … PRAY about your vote before pulling the lever.

The “official” Catholic stance on politics has been to generally stay out of it unless it threatens the ability of The Faithful to live/practice their faith; Be a living example of faith as Jesus was and others will eventually follow with the love and compassion of Jesus in their hearts and do what is right in their lives, no hard sell necessary. They believe that it is not man’s place to sit in judgment of the sins of others, but God’s place alone.
They recognize the humanity in all (even illegal aliens), as children of God (sinners though they may be) who are loved by Him, that through the grace of God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) each can be redeemed (even Democrats). All we can do as Catholics is pray for the intervention of God into the hearts of men (politics is the realm of the man not of God) to turn from the darkness towards the light.
Naïve perhaps from the political perspective, and it sometimes, yes it ticks me off, but if you understand where they are coming from (the spiritual and not the political) the Cardinal’s actions make sense.

Since May 12th announcement and his ‘gay love fest’ since, the black church has been torn between the AAs who heard Obama say he is for gay marriage and let out a collective, southern-drawl laced, . .’AH HELLL NAWWWWL , . . HAS HE LOST HIS D— MIND???!!!; AND the AAs who can’t see themselves having anywhere else to go cause Republicans hate blacks and poor people. 68% of blacks in my church hates what he is doing. But they are crippled by inferiority, the rejection they feel from conservatives and the constant drum of they are ‘racist’. Throwing peanuts at black women is not helpful, at all.
If Romney offered a plan for AA’s 14% unemployment, he would strip away 12 – 18% from the Dems party. Forcing Christian AAs to support ‘ssm’ is a turning point for ones like me and my family who will vote for Romney just to stop PO from taking bibles out of churches next term. Who knows what “crazy” is coming next with him.
There are non Christian AAs who are p.o. about gays hijacking the NAACP and PO’s “I’m not the President of black America,” being repeated by him for 3rd/4th time. So very p.o. until they are saying PO has to go. That is staggering for the black community and the media is
