Despite Record Number of Recipients, Congress May Make Cuts to Food Stamps

Talk about historical accomplishments. It’s official: There are now more Americans than ever before relying on food stamps.
This reality comes as the United States climbs its way out of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. New numbers from the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) show that more than 44.5 million people received food stamps in March. This means that about 14 percent of the entire nation is dependent on the government for basic food and nutrition (about 21 million households).

While many families are certainly in need, the cost of the program has many people questioning its efficiency. According to ABC News:
Opponents of the program argue that money from the food stamps budget – with what they call its increasingly lax requirements – needs to be shifted to other programs such as education and child nutrition. The program’s supporters argue that at a time of economic decline, such welfare programs are even more important to try to keep Americans from spiraling into poverty.
The cost of the food stamps program has increased rapidly since it was established by Congress in 1964.
It cost taxpayers more than $68 billion last year, double the amount in 2007.
Nutrition assistance now accounts for more than half – or about 67 percent – of the USDA’s budget, compared with 26 percent in 1980. That shift in focus, critics say, is ineffective because it hasn’t put a dent in poverty or hunger in the United States while taking away money from other programs, specifically agricultural programs that should be the main focus of the agency.
Will the government make cuts to food stamps? The issue is currently on Congress’ radar, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens. Already, the current allocation being considered for 2012 is $2 billion below the amount President Obama requested.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 9:20pmAs with ALL government handout programs,,,,,there is massive fraud by a growing population of ‘money grubbers’. Absolutely no doubt about that…..most people know at least a few that have there unwarranted hands in the cookie jar. Our governement doesn’t need to cut food stamps and family aid,,,,they just need to do their jobs effectively. Monitor the programs regarding who the recipients are-and there ARE people who do need assistance-and prosecute those that are defrauding the taxpayers. Should our governement decide to EFFECTIVELY monitor the program,,,I have no doubt that the cost of assistance would drop dramatically. But our wise thinking governement would rather cut benefits for all, in lieu of monitoring those that receive it. I have NEVER received assistance, not even unemployement, but it truely burns my arse when I see people receiving assistance who just prefers not to work. There are several different types of assistance one can receive,,,,and these professional bums know the angles-nice homes, cars, and foods bought. I’ve even seem some receive government assistance on the rent, medical bills, college education (and childcare while attending classes and assistance with gas to drive to class.) To add insult to injury, some work a job while receiving benefits (but deliberately keeping their monthly wages just under the limits to keep the benefits rolling. I have seen the fraud first-hand and the system just keeps right on handing out their programs.

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 2:07amWe all have stories. The one that has irked me is a college prof who divorced her hubby. He gets all the freebees even tho 1/2 of what they had was his too. He goes to the Food Bank and gets free butter, cheese etc. and shares it with his Professor wife and she in turn shares it with her close friends. And this woman claims to be a Christian knowing she is accepting this stuff that isn’t legitimately hers to take. It’s the FRAUD of these programs I hate, not the program for those in need. BTW: when you accept freebees, it would be better if you cut out all the excess in expensive things that are no longer needed when you can’t afford it. Doesn’t look good to maintain a life style when everyone knows you are on food stamps and expect you to quit smoking, drinking, paying for cable, going to movies, eating out at fast food or restaurants, buying new clothes & shoes all the time. Kinda gives us the notion you really don’t need that help and why most of us are kinda angry.

She was hired through a legitimate company who obviously paid her under the table so she could draw all the freebees. My mom wouldn’t use her anymore after she heard all this woman got for free. Because my poor mom has a sound mind and doesn’t drool or live in subsidized housing, she can’t get help of any kind to give her a hand (as ill as she is) so she mostly does without and she’s past 90, so don’t tell me about welfare and able bodied persons taking advantage. I do all I can for her. She’s too proud to play the game of being senile and a bit stupid to get help for only a few hours a week.
One gal came in to help (paid for) and because my mom was in bed, she’d go sit in a chair in other room. I happened in and found her sitting down on the job doing nothing after only an hour. Boy, did she jump up and act busy. So, even paying someone doesn’t get the work done. I don’t trust these home health care employees to do what is required, unless someone is watching.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 8:45pmRegardless what most people believe, food stamps rarely cover the entire cost of food for a month. Depends on your income. At one time I received food stamps as I was working part time and hubby was unemployed (and had run out of unemployment payments) … we received $107 per month. Barely 2 weeks worth of very cheap food.
I was earning about $1200 per month (takehome $1000). We don’t have a mortgage so our utilities are all we worry about. Normally the food stamp program takes into consideration rent or mortgage, car payments and part of your utilities (based on an average area expense – not your actual bills – at least in my state.) Cable TV NOT counted. Internet access NOT counted. Phone is counted at about $12 per month. I haven’t seen a $12 phone bill for 30 years!
FEW PEOPLE get their entire food budget paid for with food stamps. CUTS – no don’t cut – try cleaning up the WASTE and FRAUD first.
Why is it cuts are always though of first but no one thinks of cutting the fraud!?

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 4:02amIt‘s not like food stamps pay for all the food you’d ever want. They’re designed to modestly supplement the food budget of the working poor. In most cases, you have to have a job just to qualify for food stamps, so it’s not realistic to paint these people as lazy. Sometimes you just can’t find enough work to get by, especially in instances with single mothers, etc. Making people even more destitute isn’t going to help the economy, it’s going to hurt it when the plurality of the American population has no disposable income to spend on consumer goods and drive recovery.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 11:31pmI personally know of people who use the gov. for everything they can get for free. Those who eat better than I do with food stamps need to be stopped. I eat a lot of pinto’s and cornbread to stretch out the grocery bill. When I see and hear of others buying the cuts of meat I’d never buy it makes my blood boil. The prob. with most of us, we have more personal pride and make do so we can feed the family. This thing about our poor unfed children who can get 2 meals a day (even during summer) is interesting. If they are that poor, I’m sure they get food stamps, and everything else free to keep them going. Please help we understand why we’ve become a Nanny country? Even my husband has peanut butter sandwich when I’m not going to be home to fix something for him. The cup O soup can be bought for approx. 17 to 35 cents a meal which he fixes too. If many of these kids can afford to buy gum, ice cream, candy, etc, they can afford to buy a simple lunch. Many have cell phones.

I work in a pharmacy/drugstore and people come in all day and night (especially LATE at night) and fill up their shopping carts with food and drinks. What is wrong with that you say? We charge 2-3 times (sometimes more) than a grocery store! And these people just don’t care what amount they are paying because it is not their money.
I’m not kidding…they’ll pay $2.19 for a can of soup that they can get at a grocery store for .99 cents. Is it good for my store…sure, Is it good for the American taxpayer who covers the excessive cost? Heck no!

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 10:31pmThose on food stamps should just go get jobs. Oh wait, there aren’t jobs, because the, “United States [is climbing] its way out of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.”
So if you eliminate food stamps what happens? Americans can’t feed themselves or their children. They’ll have to become homeless. So what?! I‘ve camped out a lot and it’s actually kind of fun. They can ask for handouts. Maybe steal an apple or two from the grocery store to feed their children. Or steal whatever. They can forage for pecans or berries or whatever in the parks. Parks have bathrooms too.
This is America. Every person is responsible for themselves. If these jobless people will commit crimes rather than let their children starve to death they’ll answer for they meet their maker. In this country, we don’t give a dang. Let ‘em die.

What galls me is that they would consider taking food out of people’s mouths so that they could increase the number of limousines of the federal government by over 70 percent, sent wheat to Jordan, give $20 billion to countries like money is candy, and then have the temerity to push for an increase in taxes on the American people.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don‘t know what you’re smoking or drinking, but the unemployment was in the neighborhood of 7 percent when Bush left office. Obama and his “economists,” against the advice of every renowned economist in the world, went headlong into the two Stimulus Pork bills, and people fell out of jobs like mosquitoes shot with bug spray. Unemployment averaged about 11 percent, and some states were at 25 percent.
Government cannot create jobs because government has no product. All this regime knows how to do is spend, borrow, and spend.
When Obama usurped the White House, gasoline was averaging $1.87 a gallon. It has hovered around $4.00 a gallon lately and is still over $3.50 a gallon. Milk has gone up $1.50+. Everything is higher because it costs more to deliver it.
The freefall is Obama’s to own. Get over it. If Obama wanted to economy to improve, he would have removed the income taxes being taken out of payroll checks for six months. That’s about what the Stimulus I cost us. People would have been able to put that $800,000,000 into the economy instead of taking it out.
Posted on June 1, 2011 at 1:57amWow….I smell a lot of hypocrites and it stinks…Quick to point the finger, instead of taking RESPONSIBILITY for our actions.
This did not happen over night and is the result of both left and right progressive insane policies. if you believe it‘s the other party’s fault every time, your no different then the human who refuses to work because it’s someone elses fault..
No we should not be giving $1200 of electronic cash for food to anyone…That is called a “handout”. That is giving cash to a junkie expecting the junkie to buy food…
Yes we should help those in need and desiring to better their life until they can sustain and support their own life..This is called a “hand up”. This is called love. 1 John 3:16-24
Government does not have to tax you and give it to the junkie for “food”. Government can issue charity credits to businesses/individuals that donate food to food centers, soup lines, etc…This leaves you the working human money in your pocket, encourages charity by business/individuals and gives a “hand up” to those striving to get out of poverty. Most importantly it doesn’t give money directly, food only is given.
Now hypocrites and all those saying “no work, no food” please be sure and reject Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare or any other “hand outs” that will allow you to pay for food instead of those benefits…
Posted on June 1, 2011 at 2:48amLet me be quite clear…I am 100% for self responsibility…You make the bed you lay in…If you make your bed and have an extra pillow while your neighbor has no pillow, yes you should give them your pillow till they get their own…What do you think Glenn’s flash mobs of kindness is? loving your neighbor…
For a group of people preaching “We must stand with Israel (needy) or God will punish us”, a collective teaching, a lot are awful quick to drop the needy here like hot rocks…Do you not think God will turn from us for not helping the poor/needy here? A lot are saying send/spend millions/billions in Israel to beat out the Muslims so Israel can live peacefully and build the Temple Mount to resume sacrifice, opposite Christian teaching, but don’t give one cent to the poor/hungry here…Do any of you not find this absurd? Honestly?!
Have any of you offered the hungry work for food since it’s been quoted no work, no eat? The hungry can’t create work to pay themselves, that‘s the non hungry’s responsibility..
Individual responsibility means owning your mistakes…We the People created this mess of so many on handouts…We the People need to be responsible, not point fingers like irresponsible children, and fix the problem responsibly. Love conquers all…Hate turns you evil…Which have you become, loving or hateful…. Find someone in need and help them by getting them off the corrupt system..
Posted on June 1, 2011 at 9:50amBefore we start cutting government services to the NEEDY, which is what welfare recipients are, federal government spending should be cut to the BONE, and ALL of our troops should be brought homes while we waste trillions on wars of false pretense, that are being waged illegally and unconstitutionally.
Austerity measures should focus on GOVERNMENT spending first – such as the Military Industrial Complex. Deficit-cutting, lower spending, THEN we can talk about cutting off FOOD to POOR people.
Otherwise, this is going to spark riots, and deliberately so.
Even though I’m not on welfare, I will stand with the poor, not those pointing fingers at the poor.
But why aren’t we talking about that? Why aren’t we talking about the 700+ military bases we maintain around the planet – Manifest Destiny Nation Building?
What about the trillions in hidden military industrial complex Cold War spending that never sees the light of day?
Ron Paul would end welfare, but not without first reforming the tax code, abolishing the Federal Reserve/IRS, and ending all these falsified wars.
Posted on June 1, 2011 at 3:50pmWhat needs to be done is to limit the items that you can spend your “SNAP” money on. If they really cared about nutrition then you would limit what you could buy with the funds handed out by the Gov’t. This is where you start to change the obesity that plagues most of the country since most of the obese come from the ranks of the less fortunate. They tend to buy the cheaper less nutritional food since they are limited on funds. And if the Gov’t really believed that there needs to be a change in eating habits the SNAP program would be a good way to start that process. You know like paying for fresh vegetables instead of chips and cheetos…
