Detroit Shootings: 16 Shot, 7 Dead Within 24 Hours

Violence has erupted in Detroit. Since 6 a.m. Friday 16 people have been shot, 7 of those are now dead, and the Detroit News reports that police are scrambling to curb the bloodshed which has put the city on pace for 350 murders this year:

“A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed Saturday night after police released details about a 24-hour spate of shootings in the city that left six others dead and nine injured.

Detroit Police say the juvenile was shot around 6 p.m. Saturday in the 4600 block of Coplin while he and an 18-year-old boy were playing with a gun that went off. The bullet struck the 14-year-old, killing him.Police said the suspect is in custody and the weapon has been recovered.

The shooting follows nine others that occurred between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday.At one scene, five people were shot, police said. At another, three people were shot. The remainder of victims were shot at separate locations.One other victim was in critical condition, one in stable and the remainder in serious condition at area hospitals.

The city was on pace for 350 murders this year, according to an analysis by The Detroit News. In a city that has lost 25 percent of its population since 2000, that could put the year on pace to reach the highest per-capita rates in a decade.”

What perhaps makes the boom in shootings even more disturbing has been the location of each attack. Victims have been gunned down on foot or shot in “drive-bys” at backyard parties, walking to a basketball court, and even while changing a car tire.

WXYZ obtained this statement from Detroit Mayor Dave Bing’s office regarding the surge in violence:

“Reducing violent crime is our number one priority. Chief Godbee and the men and women of the Detroit Police Department are working around the clock to bring these criminals to justice. Our community must continue to work with us to stop this kind of violence. Every resident deserves to be safe and feel safe in their neighborhood.”

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee is preparing plans to have as many as 50 officers per shift to guard the streets according to the Detroit News. The city has about 2,800 officers, some of which will be pulled off administrative jobs to help Chief Godbee execute his new strategy.

Earlier in June, the city saw shootings take place at an 8th grade graduation party and high school reunion picnic. The Detroit Free Press reports that at least 20 people were shot during another violent weekend between 6 a.m. July 29 and 6 a.m. August 1.

    This is all getting really stupid and VERY VERY frustrating , This City is a liberal utopia , as is Chicago and both at one time wonderful American citys with pride and business and culture , now that the skum progressive liberals have run both city‘s into mad max type city’ s along with California next , most people still dont get it, along with our wonderful Republican party, theses city’s are perfect examples of what happens to citys when liberals are aloud to run them and control them, its really heart breaking what they are doing to this great country, and it seems most people still dont get it, and both partys suck and are doing nothing,,,,

      The way to solve this problem is simple have government employee go door to door with questionaire THAT HAVE ONLY ONE QUESTION WHAT IS YOUR Heritage…Everyone that answers African American get a free ticket back to Africa. All those that answer American can stay.

      SMITHCLAR3NC3 Oops. I think I misunderstood your comment. People should not say they are hyphenated American whether Asian-American, African-American, or whatever. They are American. I have a friend who sometimes says she is an African-American but no one believers her. Liberals do not believe there are caucasians born and raised in Africa. And another friend who simply says she is African and no one believes her – the University reported her as African-American against her wishes. She is African and living and working legally in America. She is jumping through all the hoops to become a citizen.

      Our city is in dire straights. The schools dont ediucate, the police dont protect and the parrents for the most part dont care. Blame it on the black families or the unions if you want. The truth is the city failed itself. Coleman Young built the invisable brick wall at eight mile and Dennis Archer go tired of tring to break it down. Kwame was so full of promise that people didnt see the corruption. Now Mayor Bing is attempting to clean up the mess. Right sizing the city is the way to go but he is in a constant battle with the council. Everyone needs to see this is a problem that nees to be fixed and stop infighting or this once great area WILL DIE

      Imagine a city where all the major economic planks of the statist or modern “progressive” platform have been enacted:

      A “living wage” ordinance, far above the federal minimum wage, for all public employees and private contractors;

      A school system that spends significantly more per pupil than the national average;

      A powerful school employee union that militantly defends the exceptional pay, benefits, and job security it has won for its members;

      A powerful government employee union that does the same for its members; and

      A tax system that aggressively redistributes income from businesses and the wealthy to the poor and to government bureaucracies.

      Would this be a “shining city on a hill,” exciting the admiration of all? We don’t have to guess, because there is such a city right here in my own state: Detroit

      @beardeddog made a very good point actually. I’m not sure that it was intended. The point was that the kids weren‘t taught ’respect, discipline and common sense’. If they had all of these characteristics then there is no doubt that we would not have these problems of random shootings. The idea is that a Christian society is a safe society. This is something that the founders knew and wrote about.

      Do you really believe what you just wrote? The black dependency culture (which makes up the vast majority of all urban blacks) have been told for fifty years now that they are the victims of inherintly greedy whites who don’t want them to participate in mainstream American culture. These themes are re-inforced from the pulpit in their churches, and the entertainment they consume. Remember Jay-Z with his “…we gonna paint the White House black!!!” at Obama’s post-election ball?
      Liberalism has so infected the black population with the idea that white males and Republicans (whatever that word even means to them), hate them, and want to keep them poor with absolutely ZERO emphasis on their own accountability or responsibility for their station in life. I’m sorry son, but this isn’t changing in 100 years, much less one generation. A buddy of mine who‘s black told me his dad hasn’t spoken to him since he told him in 2008 that he wasn’t voting for Barak Obama. True story, and one that I’m sure has been repeated all over this country when it comes to the mere 6% of black voters that had the courage to vote their conscience, and not their skin color.

      I am often wrong, but I sure would consider it “sweet science” to conduct the experiment. All of your anecdotes come from the present dependency-ridden environment. If that environment is changed, then people’s conduct will change. Simple application of game theory. I read an article in WSJ a week ago about improving the marriage rate for black women if they were more open to marrying white men — a proposition supported by game theory that would likely result in more marriage overall for black women. Another potential game changer — polygamy. That strengthens the social economic position of women, so black men would be encouraged to marry (and be faithful) to secure companionship. Same sort of game theory application would apply to other subcultures, of course, but Black Americans are in the most dire postion.

    I used to live in DOWNTOWN DETROIT, and i am white, with black girlfriend. Moved out 10 years ago, and moved my business too. Feel crime and hate to us forced us to move, we were driven out.
    I go back for visits, so bad their are some roads i will not even stop when driving for a red light
    or stop sign or the car will be attacked. I do not think people outside of detroit, or other big progressive cities understand how bad thing have gotten.
    But on the plus side, yes you can get a house, for around $100, no not a type “o”, a whole house you own for around a $100, goolge it. Oh you may not live past the first night in your house, but everthing has its drawbacks.

      Someone in our lunch time discussion group brought some information that suggested that cities with strict gun laws tend to have significantly more gun related problems. According to several studies states with carry laws have lower gun related problems.

      To prove your point, just look at what Wright did to obama. Those people in their lives are honing them into animals, pretending to be God’s people. I nearly cry every time I see pictures of Detroit. Why do people call others racist when they can clearly see that blacks ruin a place where ever they go? That isn’t being racist to say so, that is the truth. I think people selling out when they started moving in is what really caused the downfall. People should have stood their ground and not sold and moved. To say they didnt’ have the same opportunities as the rest of us is a lie. They got the same pay as everyone else in those factories. It is their own fault the city died, they killed it. What I don’t understand is why they have sooooo much hate for whites. Whites fought to free them from slavery, whites helped them afterwards. So who instilled all that hate in them? I know several southerners who fought on the yankee side and I bet they would turn over in their graves knowing they did the wrong thing. I really hate to say all this, but it’s the truth.

    I occasionally visit Detroit for Tigers and Red Wing games, but only on the afternoon ones. Detroit scares the s**t out of me after dark.

      I don’t believe the lemmings ever will get it,too many years of brainwashing by the government that people are entitled to a house,job and health care.They might understand after the collapse but by then they’ll be chewed up by the roaming hordes of criminals.

      man i just love my city, and they wonder why we can not get business or people to come here. this is not a lib/progressive problem, this is a black problem, oh wait same thing! our city was once a great city home to industry, progress, hard working americans and it all went away. this is nothing new it started in the late 60′s after the riots and has snowballing down a slow grade hill for some time now. although many people do not realize that the snowball hit the tree when cloeman young was elected mayor and made sure that this city would never return to its former glory!

      If you are pointing out that, ultimately, it is an individual who makes a choice to commit a crime, then I agree. I think what Kenyan was saying, though, is that government policies have consequences for the citizens and it is clear enough that liberal/progressive/socialist/RINO policies undermine the sort of society where people act responsibly and (as a result) crime goes up — “as a conservative Republican” you must certainly know that, as individual responsibility is a cornerstone of American conservatism.

      I will not report it. There are many trolls that post in these articles. There is a lot of traffic and a lot of noise and most of it is irrelevant. The link being posted is the most important question you will get in this world. All the crap posted in this site is meaningless compared to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

      Maybe this is not the ideal way to present the gospel, and maybe I would not resort to spam to pass this message along. But I am certainly not going to report it either. Maybe God will use this and I am not going to obstruct that.

      I think it is a combination of many factors, but certainly the corruption of the gospel plays a role. Black liberation theology feeds an entitlement mindset. For those that still even believe in God…

      People will argue, but I feel the very deepest root is a moral problem, the turning away from God. Fix this and everything else will fall into line.

      You can thank Pres.Johnson’s 1968 “Great Society” program that opened the door to welfare that destroyed the “black Families”.Dad was no longer needed,family unit destroyed and having brats gave them more monthly income.Fast forward to now and you have single parent environment with uneducated unskilled broke youth running wild .

    My hometown. Lived there from my birth in 66‘ to 92’. Saw first hand how progressive marxist policies, in collusion with big government and unions, destroyed one of the greatest cities on earth. And now we see the same policy and tactics being deployed on a national level.

      I lived in ny metro area from ‘52 to ’86 and didn’t know any better. moved to Texas and my eyes were open! a lot less progressive and a lot more freedom. We hate to lose him but, Perry for president. the best thing to happen to America in over 4 years.

      Born and raised on the east side (Highland Park, Hamtramck, Detroit south of 6 mile) from 66 till 1985, flew on Tankers for 25 years, best thing I ever did was leave that third world waste land. I still am proud of my roots, but the posts on this site really nail it. This is a Black, Liberal, welfare, thing, and nothing but. Just went back this summer, and it is spreading to the suburbs now. Blacks need real leaders really really bad, they are lost. and I aint talkin Jesse Jackson, Sharpton, Kwame, or the Hateful Rev Wright. They are the problem, and Obama facilitates thier demise.       My kin lived in Lincoln Park. When we visited, we didn’t need a signs to tell us where Lincoln Park ended and where Detroit began….on one side of the intersection were nice homes, automobiles in good condition, thriving businesses, and a minimal amount of mess; cross over the intersection into Detroit and there were burnt out homes, abandoned stripped/burnt cars, shuttered & burnt businesses, overgrown vacant lots, and plenty of trash on the ground. It was quite a compare and contrast!

      When one sees was Detroit was in the 1940s, ’50s, and early ’60s, it swells the heart with pride to see such industrial might and prosperity. To see how this uber-powerhouse of a city was leveled by 45+ years of progressive government, it makes one want to weep.

      B.S…last I check they have open carry and typical concealed carry laws. it‘s not as lax as some states but it’s no NY, Wisc, or Cally.

    So where these wanna be ministers to talk to the people in Detroit. Why is it that cockroaches like Sharpton and Jackson only show up to incite people to riot, stir up trouble, and further black racism ? And to think they actually call themselves men of the cloth ? What a joke. Where are the BLACK leaders telling people to stop the killing. Hell, bums like Van Jones loves this crap. Work the crowds, get them fired up, talk the uneducated and ignorant into going after whitey. Bastards. All it will end up doing is more people whilte and black getting killed to further the goals of these bums. Sad, so sad.
