Detroit Unveils New 9-1-1 Policy: No Serious Danger? You’ll Get Transferred

The Detroit Police Department unveiled a new 9-1-1 policy recently, and it’s got some people worried. Why? Because unless there seems to be an imminent threat, callers will get transferred to a crime reporting unit.

“This is how it works,” WJBK-TV explains. “If you’ve been held up and the gunman is long gone, or you’ve been assaulted but not too badly, or your home has been broken into, that’s not 911 anymore. They’ll transfer you or you can call the Telephone Crime Reporting Unit yourself at 313-267-4600.”

The exact criteria is murky, but according to WJBK, if there is no immediate threat, if the crime is not in progress, and if the criminals have left the scene, the department isn’t going to waste its time to scramble officers.

“The aim is to reduce the number of calls considered ‘non-emergency,’” the Detroit News reports, “ones not requiring immediate service or an officer’s presence — and redirect 40 percent of the calls for service to the unit.”

So who responds to those non-emergency calls?

“Non-emergency calls for service are handled by police officers (limited duty status) and/or civilian personnel,” the department said, according to the news.

The Detroit News outlines the policy that will guide how  dispatchers will now group calls:

Priority 1. Considered an emergency; police are dispatched for situations including the perpetrator still on the scene; emergency medical service is needed or requested; and the preservation of evidence or the protection of the crime scene is urgent.

Priority 2: Considered serious; police are dispatched but the situation is stabilized. Same criteria as Priority 1, except the crime or incident is in progress or happened within 15 minutes and the likelihood of apprehension is high or low.

Priority 3: Not considered serious; police dispatched because assistance is needed, but not urgently. Similar to Priority 2, but the incident occurred less than 15 minutes earlier. These can include a break-in or house-stripping.

Priority 4: Not considered serious; police dispatched or runs may be redirected to T.C.R.U. only when the incident is not in progress; the perpetrator is not on the scene; it occurred more than 15 minutes earlier; and the likelihood of apprehension is low.

Priority 5: Not serious; T.C.R.U. handles. Similar to Priority 4, but apprehension is unlikely and damage or loss is less than $10,000.

“It’s giving criminals the wrong idea,” Tony Wright, a retired Detroit homicide detective, told the station. “If you want to do something, do it in Detroit. The police won’t show up.”

The plan is apparently part of the department’s attempt to save money. Last year, the department also stopped automatically responding to burglar alarms.

Detroti, Gary, Newark, and Oakland are poster children of the democrat success in redistribution. If you like how they are going reelect Obama if you like how North Dakota is going with 3% unemployment , a housing boom an economy skyrocketing elect a republican, any Republican is better than Obama. Obama has lived his entire life on government handouts for school, for community organizing, for Harvard law school, Illinois House and now President he has never held a real job where failure meant losing your job—-until now. Let’s make him aware of failure and the results, please.

Since someone already mentioned RoboCop, I might as well pile on. I do believe that ALL this is leading up to a scenario “like” that in the Movie RoboCop except with the OCP only in reality “OCP” will stand fro Obama Civillian Corp. Officers loyal ONLY to the obama regime offering assistance ONLY to those obama deems worthy of his time. If your being robbed at gun point you better be SURE that you have your Obama party membership papers or you will be left to fend for yourselves.

One last serious comment: why would ANYONE live in Detroit? Looks like America’s model for anarchy. Remember the movie, “Escape from New York”? They need to put a wall around Detroit, and seal it up, and let the inmates run their own little asylum. I’m sure the UAW would maintain control better than the ineffective police force. Union thugs don’t take no crap from nobody!

I actually live in Detroit and yes things are bad here just like they are every place else in the United States, but that doesn’t mean that Detroit looks as you say “America’s model for anarchy.” This is completely false. There is crime here and the problem is that everyone is afraid to stand up. No one is will to stand, everyone has the same philosophy as you do, which is to leave. If everyone with a light leaves, then all that is left is darkness. I love my city, though a group of people here make it bad for everyone else. There is still good left in the city, and I believe in it. I have faith that God is going to turn things around in this city, but someone have to stand up for Detroit because if no one does then this city and its rich history will become extinct.

Noob… Correct… Your city will become extinct if there’s nobody to stand up for it. Unfortunately it is apparent that the ones elected to tand up for it have abandoned you as constituents to the proverbial wolves because they are too spineless to do their sworn duties. It isn’t unique to detroit. It’s a systemic issue all over the US. Both houses have abandoned the American Citizen and only pursue their ends.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away…unless you live in Detroit. In which case, unless you’re bleeding out in an alley and can somehow use your cellphone to call 9-1-1 before you die, the police might just take the call.

Let’s face it – in Detroit, the cops are neutered anyway. The gangs are better-equipped, and the cops don‘t even like to respond unless there’s a lot of back-up. If you live in Detroit, you’re on your own.

Absolutely frigg’n right. Because we are not allowed to talk about the 12,000 lb elephant in the room(blacks), it will only get a LOT worse. The liberals like to use poverty as an excuse for black dysfunction, WV is 92% white and nearly 70% of them live below overty, they have the LOWEST crime rates in the nation. This country needs to wake up from its suicidal PC slumber and deal with race.

I think this will be ok as long as these calls don’t get pushed onto the back burner and forgotten about. I can see where the police department is coming from. Last summer someone stoled our fishing boat and we filled out a police report online. We never talked to a officer, nor have we heard back from the police department. I still wonder who read the report and where it got shuffled to. I think alot of people abuse 911, such as the lady who called 911 after getting shorted on food at a drive through. I would say life threatening emerciences only.

Are you kidding me??????? If someone abuses the 9-1-1 system, prosecute them. But do NOT ignore the system by letting the operators decide which calls are important and which calls are not. If I call 9-1-1, I’m expecting immediate help, not some operator who tells me that, since I’m still breathing, and the knife wound isn’t THAT bad, they’ll re-route me to the desk sergeant.

I’ll guarantee you that, if I called 9-1-1 and told the operator that I had a gun and was going to kill the guy at my front door, I’d get immediate results. They’d probably come and “rescue” the assailant and arrest me for having a gun.

I have lived less than 20miles from detroit most of my adult life. To say that the black run and staffed police force is lazy, incompetent, and corrupt is an understatement of biblical proportion. Just like anything else that blacks manage, it is a joke. This country and the liberal elite needes to sit down and have a serious discussion on race. No more coddling, no more pretending that we are all equal.

Some dispatcher make the decision wether you have an emergency requiring th presence of a police officer. Many departments spend a lot of time and money training their 911 operators and dispatchers but the majority issue the employee a headset and set them down in front of a computer screen to fill in the blanks.
These people should not be placed in a situation where they are making life and death decisions on a daily basis.
I can see the law suits now

I wish all folks would have courage. When someone breaks into your home or assaults you or robs you, please, PLEASE, just draw down on the perp and kill him. This is a service that you do for your community. If you let the perp get away, he lives to rob countless others, extending the cycle of violence and making our society much less stable. The police do not even try to find these people, and their closure rates on cases are dismal. If you care for your neighbors, please just shoot the guy. Don’t talk to him, don’t negotiate with him. He has chosen his moment to not get caught, there probably isn’t anyone around, just kill him. Let him have what he wants and shoot him in the back as he flees. Then, leave the scene (and take your belongings back). Be sure not to leave any prints. I recommend carrying several pairs of latex gloves in your vehicle all the time for such instances. Pick up your casings if you are firing a semi-auto. Revolvers are better, no chance of a lost casing. Leave no evidence. Do not call the police – you’ll be investigated and treated like a criminal. Folks, we are on our own from here on out. Let’s stick together. Carry at all times.Protect yourself and your community.

I do agree with you, however I will only “draw down” on someone if I fear for my life. I don’t like my tax dollars going to defend these life long criminals, but I don’t think I could kill someone just to get rid of them.

Scenario: A man drives along a low traffic road and pulls up to a stop light. He is assaulted by gang members, robbed and killed. The gang members leave the area. About 20 minutes later he is found by another motorist who calls the police. Under the new policy it seems his murder would have less chance of getting solved. What a waste. I‘m glad I don’t live in Detroit.
